Dorcas did her best to keep her face straight. Sam. Samwise Gamgee. Samwise Gamgee from The Lord of the Rings was standing in front of her in a hospital room. This world truly was spectacular.

“Ah,” she said, coming close and taking a good look at the barbs in his hand. It looked painful, but she appreciated how cheerful Sam was regardless. “Well, I can definitely help you, Sam. Can you tell me about the plant these are from? I don’t recognize it.”

As she spoke, Dorcas withdrew her wand from her pocket, ready to perform an analysis spell. “I’m a witch, from another world,” she said, grinning a little bit. “So I’m going to use this to do an analysis if that’s alright.” Her professional demeanor was fading. Having Sam here was too exciting. “Are you from another world too? Or homegrown in Sallow Hills?”

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

This wasn't the first time Sam had gotten a plant related injury, and it was undoubtedly far from the last. He had been used to things like this since he was a lad, so it barely phased him anymore. The hospital visit was just for safety’s sake, as he didn’t what to make anything worse.

“‘Course I can. Its not from Earth, I don't think. Someone in town, one of my customers, they asked if I could cultivate some for a project they were working on. Its not toxic, just has a nice coat of protection on it.” All true information, he only held back the personal details, as airing out customer information (especially magic-related) was bad for business.

Sam watched, intrigued by her wand. Earlier in his time in town, magic-users made him nervous, but he had grown much more used to it since. “That's just fine... No, no I’m not homegrown here. I’m from a different place entirely. I’m not even human,” he gave a little laugh at that. “I'm from a placed called Michel Delving in a land called the Shire.”

Due to everything that had just taken place, Zelda was a little dizzy. And that was understandable. So many different faces, smells and voices. It would overwhelm just about anyone. Especially when you are not prepared. Meeting fans was something she loved but she would much rather have a meet up planned than to be rushed and cornered like this. Their heart was beating fast in their chest but the more they let the stranger guide them away from the crowd, the more safe she started to feel.

Blinking a couple of times, Zelda looked at him and then cleared her throat. “I am not so sure. I feel a little lightheaded” they admitted and then cleared their throat. “Ah that? Those were my fans. I work as a model”

⊱ ────── {⋆⌘⋆} ────── ⊰

There was something strangely familiar, being in their presence. It wasn't that Samwise thought knew her specifically, but looking at her gave that strange sort of tug in his chest— the one which always came about when a blurred memory of someone was dancing at the edge of his mind and wouldn't come into focus. They reminded him of someone he had forgotten. What an odd feeling.

This only caused the concern he had to grow. You could say what you would about Sam, but his heart was much bigger than most.

“Ah, well you’ll have to forgive me. I don't really keep up with that sort— sorry, that's not important. You’re light headed? Do you need to sit down, or the café’s just up the street, we could get you some water or somethin’.”

✧・゚    CATRA && OPEN

Catra had been in this godforsaken place for four days. It was all new and strange and awful, so so awful. Not that people acted awful. In fact, everyone xe had met so far had been way too nice. Infuriatingly nice, explaining to xem that this happened all the time, that people had a habit of appearing here out of nowhere, that it would all be fine, that xe would get used to it, make friends, and be happy. Xe’d been showed to an all too charming bed and breakfast, and a weird lady had tried to interview them.

Catra wasn’t interested in being happy or making friends or being interviewed by the strange woman with intrusive questions. All Catra was interested in was going home. But there was this barrier, keeping anyone from leaving. At least, that’s what they told xem. But Catra needed to see this barrier for xemself, needed to try, needed to beat xir fists against it.

So Catra went to the outskirts of town, to the barrier in the forest, against everybody’s advice. It was past sunset, and xe had been warned there were dangerous creatures lurking about and the barrier would make xem sick, but Catra could care less. Xe had to go.

Catra ventured through the trees, moonlight lighting xir way and shadows jumping out and startling them. Xe were starting to feel sick, which told xem that xe were close. And then suddenly, Catra couldn’t walk any further. Forest extended in front of xem, but they could go no further. Catra reached up xir hand and pushed. Pushed. Pushed. It was solid. Xe pushed harder, with xir entire body. Nothing. Tears and frustration welled up within xem, and soon xe were beating xir fists against it, kicking, screaming, willing to get through to no avail. Eventually xe collapsed against it, sobbing. The townspeople were right. There was no way through, and Catra’s sheer force of will and blunt force had no affect on the impenetrable barrier.

Xe sat like that for awhile, ignoring the sick feeling in xir stomach, staring off into the distance, watching the trees sway in the wind. And then Catra went completely still. Footsteps. Crinkling of leaves. Xe weren’t alone.

Midna had been watching.

That made her sound creepy. She wasn’t trying to be creepy, but it kind of came with the territory when you were at home in the shadows. In an attempt to familiarize herself with the new town she found herself in, Midna often went exploring. Her people, the Twili, lived in darkness, making Midna nearly nocturnal by an average person’s standards. Though she had been warned of the dangers the forest held, she went in alone anyway. Her thinking was if things got too hairy, she could simply teleport herself back to the safety of town.

She didn't know why she stayed when the stranger started having a meltdown at the barrier. Maybe it was the pure defeat of it all, or maybe it was the threat of danger from within the trees, but something about xir heartache held Midna there. Finally, she decided to slide out from the shadows, and touch her feet back to solid ground again. Midna approached quietly, but knew her footsteps on the debris of the forest floor would give her position away soon enough.

“I tried that too,” she said softly, voice breaking the silence of the forest as she came into view. Midna was quite out of place in the woods. Her hair was bright orange, and she was extraordinarily tall. “My second night here I tried to make a run for it. I tried everything, but… not even magic can get you through the barrier… I’m sorry.” When Midna reached xem, she sat down at xir side. “You miss somebody? Or Something? Is that it?”

He’s disappointed in her response because he’d really love to know what it is about this place that keeps calling him. Maybe it’s the magick and since a part of him still aches for what once was, this shop’s own power keeps pulling him in. Although, he could consider it a relief that they don’t know each other. That’s one less person he has to apologize to for forgetting them. One less person he has unintentionally hurt.

❝ Okay. Well that’s a good thing, I guess. Thank you. I’m Simon. It’s nice to meet you. ❞ He glances over at the shelf he knocked into and makes his way over to pick up the items he’d accidentally tipped over. It isn’t many of them but Simon takes his time putting each one in it’s place. He doesn’t want to leave just yet. This place feels familiar and Simon wants to keep digging for more clues.

He also doesn’t want to leave yet because he’s a bit enthralled by the retailer. Not in a way that he’s being unfaithful to his partner, of course not. Not ever. There’s only one soul in the universe for him- but he’s also not blind.

She’s beautiful. Completely beautiful all around but it’s her eyes that captivate him the most. Simon’s never seen someone with one’s like hers. Out of all the creatures and people he’s come across, none of them had had violet eyes. Not that he remembers anyway, and he would have recalled seeing eyes like hers. Simon tries to swallow the question he so badly wanted to ask upon first seeing her, but curiosity gets the best of him this time around. He finishes up with the trinkets and faces her again.

❝ Did you make your eyes that color? Are they magickal? ❞

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

There was nothing subtle about Yennefer of Vengerberg. A very long time ago, near a century now, she had been the opposite. She used to shrink back into the shadows until she was barely perceptible. Though all of that changed when she gained more confidence in herself (and had a touch of cosmetic work done). There were few people like her on The Continent, and even fewer in Sallow Hills. She always wore a choker with a black obsidian star on it, and her hair was nearly always tumbling down in perfect curls. Her wardrobe was stunning, with every piece suiting her style and body perfectly. Almost everything she wore was black or white, and there was only the occasional pop of colour. Her skill with makeup was equal to that of her skill with clothing, and at this point it was unclear if the precision came from magic or decades of practice.

In the same way her clothes accentuated her body, her makeup did the same to her face. She supposed that was why people often complimented her eyes-- they popped in contrast to the neutral colours otherwise on her face. She didn’t know that purple eyes didn’t exist on this sphere, for that would have been the true answer to her curiosity.

“It’s not a problem. Pleasure to meet you Simon. I’m Yennefer.” She was slightly astounded when he turned to fix the items on the shelf. Most people who made a mess never thought to stay and fix it. The mage stared at him as he did, trying to paint herself a picture of the person before her with every detail available. She was about to ask him if there was anything else she could help him with when he spoke first.

Yennefer gave a small laugh at the question. She could respect the blunt nature of his asking. “No, no I was born with them. I’m not sure what genetic factor gave me them, but from my research, they have to do with my father’s bloodline. He was a half-elf. They aren’t magical, either. They work the same yours do. I have been told they’re hypnotic, but I think the man who said it was just trying to get a free favor from me.”

Laurie nodded, hoping she wasn’t coming across as too nervous. They had never owned houseplants, or even pets before. They would have been too much of a hassle with how much she and her pack moved. The whole ordeal was exciting, like a right of passage into becoming independent. Get an apartment, buy a plant, among other things.

“Oh, well if it’s pretty and easy to care for I wouldn’t mind something that flowers. But maybe just something with different colors then? They don’t have to be fancy either,” She added quickly, a new thought of being too demanding suddenly sticking in her head.

They paused. Hours at the vet had been hard to come by lately, but she still wasn’t home enough to warrant something that needed to be cared for constantly. “I work about four days a week, it’ll probably go up to five in the spring. There’s this big window in my bedroom area so if I could just it in that patch of sunlight all day while I’m working, that would be great.”

There was something indescribable about the person before him. They reminded him of someone, the someone that danced on the edge of his mind and only showed herself in a mess of golden curls. The feeling was recognizable as the same he felt when speaking to Zelda, but he couldn’t make sense of either. He let the train of thought go for the time being.

“I’m sure I could work out something perfect for you, then … sorry, I don’t think I caught your name.” He was smiling, Sam was always smiling. “Right, I can certainly work with that. Give me a moment to get a few choices out for you.”

A few laps around the shop later, Sam had lined up a few candidates on the register counter. They varied in shape and size: one was a string of pearls plant, beside it a peperomia, an asparagus fern, and African violets. “Anything catch your eye? If not I can keep looking for you.”

✧・゚   ┊   ┊   ┊  REMUS && SAMWISE

image

┊   ┊   ┊   ┊   ┊

REMUS’S MIND CAME TO A SCREECHING HALT AS HE PROCESSED THE MAN’S WORDS.  hobbit.  Hobbit!  Oh he was a great big blubbering idiot.  He was dumber than a flobberworm; how had he not seen this?  Or even thought about it?  When Stephanie Brown had explained the idea of multiple universes to him (not that it needed much explaining - he was a comic reader after all, and the idea wasn’t even a stretch for the wizarding world), why had he not wondered if characters he loved would be here.  Like fucking Lord of the Rings characters.

❝ I SUPPOSE IT MUST GET ANNOYING WHEN PEOPLE JUST ASSUME YOU’RE HUMAN. ❞  i’m not human either, not fully.  Not that Remus would say that out loud even to people who knew.  Though that was probably because he knew the people who knew would hit him if they heard him say that.  ❝ That’s really nice that you learned it all from your dad.  My pa - well we have magic in common but that’s about it.  My ma though.  I was trying to go into the same field as her, nursing.  She was an angel, I swear. ❞  He chuckled, shaking his head.  ❝ Sorry, you didn’t ask for my life story.  It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.  I don’t believe I caught your name.  I’m Remus. ❞

With a shrug, Sam scribbled down the things he had just sold on a list, and handed the man his receipt. “I don’t mind when people assume it, not anymore. It makes things a little easier most times.”

He missed his Old Gaffer often, especially when he was working. Being there reminded him of all those days spent gardening together. He was a good man, whom Samwise had learned a great deal of his life’s operations from (the rest being from Mr. Bilbo and his own experiences). “I love learning about people, especially when so many here are from strange lands, comparatively speaking. That's really lovely you’re following in her footsteps.” Holding out his hand to shake, a grin on his face, he continued, “Nice to meet you Remus. Sam Gamgee at your service.”

✧・゚ MERLIN  ft.  midna

┊   ┊   ┊   ┊   ┊

MERLIN WASN’T SURE IF HE SHOULD FEEL REASSURED OR WORRIED THAT SOMEONE ELSE BRUSHED OFF THE WARNINGS .  there were dangerous things in the forest , though he suspected most of those things were less dangerous than the town let on .  They were territorial , and honestly weren’t humans as well ?  ❝ It feels like a staple of humanity that they like to warn people away from everything , even if it’s not nearly as scary as they let on .  I’ve ran into a few nasty things in the forest , but not many .  Most things just like having their space . ❞

OF COURSE , HE WAS ALSO A CREATURE OF MAGICK , and that tended to ease some of the tensions between him and other creatures .  They were attracted to eir magick , and more likely to let em into their space .

❝ IT IS NICE TO THINK ALONE , if you have a lot on you remind .  Is home far away for you ?  Or nearby ? ❞  Ey supposed that was the easiest way to phrase it .  There were people from worlds so unlike this one here , and others like him who were a bit closer .

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Midna looked around the surrounding trees, not out of any anxiety, but simple awareness. Her eyes were best adjusted to the dark. She spotted birds in the trees, heard the sounds of creatures foraging and settling in their homes, and saw as the intermittent breeze blew about fallen leaves. To her, it was peaceful. She was glad that Merlin wasn’t disturbing the peace. “Fair enough I suppose. I understand wanting space, that's why I came out here after all.”

It took a moment for her to figure out an answer to eir question. It was a complicated one if she really thought about it. While she had been good with science classes with her tutors, she was far from an expert. “It's a little bit of both I think. It's far away, yet just under our nose all at once. To get straight to the point, my home is the realm of shadows. A parallel one to the world of light.”

To demonstrate, she moved her hand, and one of the shadows that previously was in the shape of the small bush casting it, turned into the shape of a big dog, then a bird, then the fox that they had both been looking at. She smiled faintly at the shapes before letting them seep back to their original form. Perks of being the Twilight’s ruler. Midna shook her head as she looked back to Merlin, “But I can’t seem to slip back into the world of shadows since I got here.” She smiled then, wanting to dispel the subtle wave of sadness. “What about you? Are you from this Earth or from someplace else?”

┊   ┊   ┊   ┊   ┊

HE TOOK IT WELL , FOR SOMEONE NOT FROM GOTHAM .  ivy had learned to expect revolt when someone from not gotham learned who she was .  It was quite fun most of the time , watching the horror spread across their face that told her that they KNEW she could kill them with a simple flick .  Samwise did none of this , and part of her was glad .  She didn’t want to have to kill him because he was too scared of her .

❝ TALK IS THE BEST WORD FOR IT .  i commune with them .  It isn’t like how you and I speak to one another , but a different way of communicating all together .  I understand them , they understand me .  I suppose the human word for it would be closer to telepathy that verbal communication . ❞   She stroked her fingers along the leaves of the flowers , then down to the soil beneath them .  She pressed outwards , trying to understand .

❝ THESE PLANTS AREN’T FROM EARTH .  i assume they’re from your home ?  I’m struggling to fully understand what they’re trying to tell me . ❞  She hummed , trying to distinguish what she was getting from the plants .  ❝ It’s something that is in your soil back at home .  Something similar to clay , but not quite .  I can try to create a couple prototypes we can test in small batches , if you would like . ❞

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Nodding, Sam attempted to fully grasp the concept of mentally speaking to a plant. It wasn’t the most outlandish thing he had ever heard, but it was certainly a strange thing. For the most part, he understood, and figured if any more questions popped up he was more confident in asking them now.

He watched her hand move along the plant with a slight touch of nerves. Sam wasn’t usually so skittish, but these flowers meant much to him.

“They are from my home. Or not from my home exactly, but my homeworld.” She had guessed that they were for him, and not a customer, but Sam didn’t really mind it. He didn’t know why it made him feel so nervous to have said it to begin with.

The beautiful little star flowers came from Lothlorien, the land of the Elves. Not just any Elves, either, but the land of the fair Lady Galadriel. He had taken an extraordinary liking to them in his brief stay in the White Wood. They could thrive in many conditions, but it seemed they needed more help in this place. “I don’t know the soil differences. We don’t have Earth level science there, but that does make sense now that I think about it. I’d be very thankful if you did, Miss Ivy.”

Geralt felt so heavy. Because no matter what he did or said he only dug a deeper hole. He should have never even wrote the things he wrote in that group chat but yet he did. He made the decision to send those messages. Could he ever forgive himself for the things he had put Yennefer through? Yes sure people make mistakes but to constantly make the same one? Now that wasn’t a mistake that was just a habit.

Just watching her and the beauty that she was, listening to every single word that left her lips, he sighed softly. Of course he wanted to fight for her. He would fight day and night, year after year for decades because he loved her that much. He didn’t want anyone else and he knew that the second his eyes landed on her all those years ago. Now Geralt wasn’t someone who believed in the notion of love at first sight. But if he did then what he experienced that day sure fell under that category. He wanted to spend forever with her but how would she know if he didn’t tell her?

He closed the gap between the two which could be a big mistake. But he was willing to take that chance. “I do” Geralt told her and nodded. “Yennefer” letting out a soft sigh, he tilted his head to the side. “I have wanted you from the second I saw you. You are so much more than anything I could have ever dreamed of. You are everything. My everything” looking away, Geralt felt the blade of guilt dig into his flesh once again. “But I hurt you”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Had Geralt always been this infuriating? Yennefer supposed she had heard it enough times from people on their various trips about the Continent, but she had never actually considered its truth before. She considered little that did not pertain to her, especially in those days. Even if he hadn’t been infuriating then, he sure had figured out a way to be extraordinarily so now. He made her skin crawl, though she didn’t know if it was in a good way, bad way, or combination of the two.

Despite everything, if she were truly honest with herself, she still knew what she always had: she would never not choose to be with him. It didn’t matter what evils he did to her, as Yennefer would never be able to truly stay away. She did love him, and always had, even when he had made it extraordinarily hard to do so. Geralt could cheat, steal, lie, betray, murder, or do anything to anyone at all, and at the end of the day, she knew she would go back to him. She wasn’t stupid enough to think that to be healthy, but it was the truth of the matter nonetheless.

“Geralt,” she breathed his name, but said nothing else until he had finished speaking.

Yennefer listened, actually taking in his words instead of hitting them back with a metaphorical  verbal tennis racket. On a nicer day, in a better circumstance, she would have teased him, but this was a rare occasion of silence.

“You did… You said something despicable to me, merely because you knew it would hurt, because you were angry with me for what I don’t even know. But I shouldn’t want to remain like this, not for any longer. Frankly, I’m tired of it-- of all of it.” The mage paused, knowing that she could get one last jab in making him wait to hear her choice; her last bit of cruelty on the matter before she finally relented. “I think it's best if we stop acting fools, and put this situation behind us. I think you and I both know that's how this was always going to end, and I don’t see any point in drawing it out any longer.”
