What Do You Think Of The Court Of Shadows In The Folk Of The Air?

what do you think of the court of shadows in the folk of the air?

I love them. They're the healthiest relationships that Jude has had in ages. I simply love the Bomb and Jude-it's nice to see good female relationships.

TBH I really think that the Bomb is Jude's healthiest female relationship other than Heather. Vivienne and Jude have a relatively healthy relationship, but there's a lot of unpacked trauma and understandable resentment on both sides. So yeah, the Bomb is her healthiest relationship with a female.

(I mean, there was that one time when the Bomb thought that Jude was the assassin and tried to kill her, but they cleared it up and the Bomb was actually sorry for what she had done. It's a good apology scene too).

And THE ROACH? Girl, he's my favorite character apart from Vivienne. I need to see more Roach. He's so chill, I love characters like those.

And the Ghost is amazing too. I love how complex he is too. Poisoned Liriope, but helped Locke. And he was kind of forced to obey Madoc and Locke, so yeah, there's that. And he literally told Jude to kill him so that he couldn't help Madoc-that right there is a whole other level of bravery, loyalty and dedication to his friends. And his scenes with Oak? Amazing. I also liked his scenes with Jude-killing the spy, training, etc.

Every Ghost, Bomb and/or Roach scene is amazing and so immersive for me.

To be honest, I don't care for the Bomb and Roach's romantic relationship, but I don't dislike it either-I just don't care for romance in general.

I love the whole Court of Shadows together, especially with Jude. They're all so funny and classy-Dain really knew what he was doing when he recruited them.

Jurdan is actually relevant to the plot

The thing about Jurdan is that their romance is ACTUALLY RELEVANT TO THE PLOT.

See, with Percabeth and Sokeefe, leaving out their romance wouldn't change anything. They could just be really good friends or best friends.

But with Jurdan, well, if Cardan didn't romantically love Jude, if he hadn't been OBSESSED with her, then he wouldn't have offered to make her queen, which would have changed a lot in the plot.

(Not saying that this makes Jurdan superior to Percabeth or Sokeefe)

This is my two cents-feel free to disagree and give me arguments why.

I just want to say thanks for all of your anti percabeth takes. I never really shipped percabeth and I always felt sort of weird about them but I never realized why until I starting reading your posts. I think Rick is way better at setting up ideas and concepts of a relationships than he actually is at writing them. Like the idea of a Percabeth is great but the execution falls flat. There are so many non-canon Percy ships that have great potential and could be much better than canon Percabeth but this fandom is really against shipping non-canon ships (especially if it involves not shipping Percy and Annabeth)

Thank you! Yes, you are absolutely right-Percabeth's concept is amazing, but in the end, the result is honestly less than desirable. There are many moments between them that do not belong in a healthy couple, much less a golden standard one (though you couldn't make me call Percabeth the golden standard at gunpoint).

Oh my god, ok listen, I need to fucking vent.

I'm rereading PJO and I'm reminded of how much I hate how Rick portrayed Ares in Percy Jackson.

A BULLY? A THIEF? A CRIMINAL?

YOU KNOW WHAT RICK DOES TO ARES? HE TURNS HIM INTO THE BULLY WHO GIVES KIDS WEDGIES, WHO TEASES YOU AND STEALS YOUR LUNCH MONEY.

AND THAT'S FUCKING WRONG, BECAUSE ARES IS NONE OF THAT!

ARES IS THE GOD YOU PRAY TO TO GIVE YOU THE STRENGTH TO FIGHT AGAINST THE BLOODY FATHERFUCKERS AND DICKSUCKERS. HE'S THE GOD WHO HELPS YOU GET UP AFTER YOU BREAKDOWN FROM THEM. HE'S THE GOD WHO MOTIVATES YOU TO FIGHT AND DEFEND YOURSELF FROM THEM.

Percy hates Ares, BUT RICK IS WRITING PERCY!

So either Rick Riordan or his son HALEY RIORDAN (because Rick writes Percy mainly for Haley) hates Ares.

And you know what's so sad?

That this could've been a moment for self-growth from Percy. That he could've looked at Ares, what the god did, and think, 'Hey, I kind of hate him, but he's not all bad. He loves his kids and has done good things. Not everyone I hate is a bad person just because I hate them.'

But no. No, he has to end Ares' section in PJ'S GREEK GODS AND HEROES BY REWRITING ARES' MYTHS AND TWISTING THEM TO MAKE HIS OWN VERSION.

I'm so sick of how Dick Diordan writes Ares. I'm so sick of it. I'm so sick of how he villainizes the crap out of him, because there's no fucking reason to do so.

Same with Aphrodite. I don't know what Rick's fucking deal is. Let the gods be gods.

Aphrodite and Mitchell oneshot

Mitchell stared at his mother. Her skin was pale silver, and curly black ringlets framed her face, the rest being pulled back into a high ponytail. Her eyes, however, changed every moment, like a kaleidoscope. 'M-mother,' he stammered. He didn't know what to do-was this really his mother, or was she a hallucination? After losing Capture The Flag, Sherman had taunted him about his parentage. 'Aphrodite's children could never fight as well as the rest of us. Your mom is the goddess of lust and beauty, what's so strong about that?' Mitchell had punched him in the face. In retaliation, Sherman had nearly scratched his eyes out and left him with bruises that might last for a month. And then, in front of the whole camp, Mitchell had burst into tears and ran away, even as Silena called for him and Drew hissed at Sherman. And he had come to the forest, where he really liked to be alone. Thankfully, there were no nymphs or dryads now. Well, there was one, and he had turned to leave, but she called his name and beckoned him over. And then she had told him that she was actually his mother, Aphrodite. He had been told that if, by a rare chance, a god was actually encountered, they must be given the utmost respect and consideration. One's own needs were practically nonexistent, one always agreed with them no matter what. She patted a moss cushioned rock beside her. 'Oh, do sit down! It's been ages since I've talked to one of my children.' He sat down, assuming a respectful posture, hands folded in his lap. 'Ah…………uh, to what do I owe this honour?' 'Oh? Sometimes I secretly visit Camp Half Blood and watch Capture The Flag for fun, and, well, I saw what happened today.' Embarrassment heated his face. Was she going to tell all the other gods? Would he be made a laughingstock among them? Or would she turn him into something for embarrassing her? 'Oh, cheer up.' she patted his cheek and he blinked in surprise. 'I'm not going to humiliate you further. I felt that I ought to tell you how bad my children can have it, especially my sons. The patriarchy negatively affects men as well.' He swallowed. Ah. So……..she was going to comfort him? Would she expect something from him after this? Was she going to send him on a quest to prove himself or something? His throat constricted. He'd heard stories of campers going missing or worse. And there was that horrible tradition of weaving a burial shroud for a quester.

Imagines flashed through his mind, of his siblings weaving with trembling hands, of tears sliding down their cheeks, of the designs that they would struggle to choose from. 'My children are often dismissed and treated as frivolous. The gods are changed by how we are viewed, and people have begun to view me as a silly, fragile little thing who would sooner walk away then get my hands dirty. And the same goes for my children, which I cannot control, though I fervently wish I could.' Does she want to control us? Mitchell thought uncomfortably. Or is she talking about her image? 'My sons bear the brunt of this horribly-misogyny and misandry can be two versions of a terrible, useless coin. Feminine men were often mocked back in the day-well, they still ARE mocked, but you understand me.' And the point of this is? 'The point of this is to assure you that you are not alone. Other feminine men, even ones not my sons, suffer from the same discrimination. And my daughters are also mocked and called useless for the simple crime-' she wrinkled her in nose in distaste, '-of being feminine, even though femininity and fighting are intrinsically intertwined since the dawn of time. Women have silently fought their wars, not the ones with politics and weapons, but the ones with misogyny and violence from both men and women alike-and those battles have dragged on for millennia, and every generation has been witness and victim to them.' A beautiful monologue, worthy of Athena, Mitchell thought, smiling, then he was glad that his mother couldn't read his thoughts. 'And so……….' Aphrodite waved her hand, 'go back and fight, my son. I was once worshipped as a war goddess, and feminine people can still fight. Go and show them that you are a worthy son of mine.'

Magnus Chase, The Kane Chronicles and Percy Jackson all should've been set in separate universes.

It's just, the mythology is all so tangled up. How does Rick justify the beginnings and endings of the world, seeing as some of them don't really have an ending (like Greek mythology) and some of them do (Ragnarok).

So why not set them in universes? Something like Daughter of the Deep and Percy Jackson-neither are in the same universe, but they're both written by the same author. So do that for MCGA, TKC and PJO.

And Percy and Annabeth definitely could have been written out with some assistance. The crossover literally didn't have to happen.

(Don't get me wrong, I don't hate it, I think all the pantheon gods interacting with each other could be a fun concept, but I don't care for this particular concept, though that's just my opinion).

Honestly, Rick’s world building fell apart the moment he introduced Roman gods. Because the og series already conflated the Greek and Roman gods - which is fine, most mythology media does, that’s not the issue. The issue is making a whole sequel series about how different the Greek and Roman gods are, then failing to explain what those actual differences are. It’s almost hypocritical. Like how satyrs and fauns are different things, but you can’t really say that because the og series was already calling fauns satyrs - which, again, a lot of already people do and would have been fine if you didn’t bring the concept of Roman mythology being a separate thing into it. It isn’t just the Greek gods with different names, there are real differences, but that being said, most of them are pretty minor and at the end of the day are just different versions of Greek stories. Because here’s the thing - Greek vs Roman isn’t that black and white because there are different versions of mythology from different parts of Greece. They did not all believe the same things. There were essentially different denominations that had their versions, and sometimes different names for the gods, or even their own gods added into what we think of as the typical Greek pantheon. Take Orphism for example - they called Zeus Jove and Hades Pluto (yeah, the Greeks were using that name long before the Romans), and had at least 2 gods weren’t recognized anywhere else in Greece - but were still 100% Greek. So then the question becomes, are there different people/personalities for all these versions too? You would think it would be easier to just say “here are these different versions, because when things spread through oral tradition, things tend to change, but here’s the REAL version” and pick whatever one is most plot relevant (which I think the og series already kind of did if I remember correctly). Not only is that more realistic, but just makes more narrative sense. Some people might say “oh, but they’re kids books, you don’t have to get so technical about it”, and you’re right. It didn’t have to be. Again, I think it was completely fine that the og series didn’t differentiate, but Rick opened this can of worms when he introduced the Roman gods, so I’m going to be nitpicky about it. What would have made more sense is if it was just like “Oh, there’s this other demigod camp and they just so happen to use the Roman names for the gods”. Boom. Done. What about gods that were unique to Rome? They can still be real. Say that only the Romans knew/wrote about them. Heck, there was that one pjo spinoff book that had freaking Melinoe in it, even though the majority of Greece would not have considered her existence to be canon. Again, nothing wrong with that, but if you’re not going to differentiate that, then there is no reason to differentiate the Romans (or more accurately, attempt to differentiate the Romans and fail).

All of this. Every single thing in it.

Rick simplified it for the children who were reading it, but he wrote a lot of it incorrectly.

The Romans didn't just take inspiration from the Greeks-they took a lot of inspiration from Etruscan culture too.

Read this link by @lady-menrva to understand more.

The Greek and Roman gods were different in PJO because the Roman Gods were more disciplined and warlike, but that seems to be the only difference, which isn't the case.

Minerva was highly respected by the Romans. She was part of the Capitoline Triad which was very important and held a central place in Rome. They represented Roman greatness and invincibility! If she had children, they would definitely be warriors if they wanted to be.

Rick just made the Romans dislike Neptune and Minerva because he needed unnecessary angst for Percy and Annabeth. Why he did this I don't know, since they were just accepted without any question later. Just wanted to make his favorites more special, I guess.

My advice to anyone reading this is to never take Heroes of Olympus as anything that's correct. Never take any of it seriously and search on Google for your questions using verified academic websites or ask real people.

WHY RICK WHY

Rereading BOTL and when Annabeth says the Hera is the one who doesn't belong-

I'm like-

ANNABETH AND PERCY ARE YOU FUCKING DUMB OR WHAT

THIS IS THE QUEEN OF THE HEAVENS. GODDESS OF MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

ANNABETH WHAT ARE YOU DOING GIRL YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE SMART AND STRATEGIC AND WISE

WHY ARE YOU INSULTING THE QUEEN. THE FUCKING QUEEN. THE ONE GODDESS YOU DON'T WANT ON YOUR BAD SIDE

If that was the real Hera she'd have blasted them to pieces.

Ok maybe not Percy, but definitely Annabeth, and she'd send cows to bother Percy.

Rick what the hell are you doing. Richard what did you do

Jude and Fand

Ok, so one thing that I really want to talk about is Fand from TFOTA and her relationship with Jude.

Many of you probably don't remember who she is, and I don't blame you for that, but we should definitely remember her.

Fand was a faerie who, while not friends with Jude, was friendly to Jude. She let Jude compete on her team in the Summer Tournament, too, and was made head of Jude's personal guard when Jude was High Queen, when it was very dangerous for Jude to trust any faerie.

Do you know how big this is? All of it? For a human in Faerie, especially in Jude's position, both when she was Madoc's ward and then High Queen?

It's a literal message that Jude and Taryn are struggling to fit in with a world that doesn't want them, that everyone hates them. We see so many instances of them being abused. Not one faerie is nice to them-

Except Fand.

For the only faerie to be nice to Jude, (apart from Madoc, and he's not the type of nice I'm talking about here) Fand is barely mentioned, which is a little surprising.

And it's sad, because Fand could be a part of why Jude wanted to stay on in Faerie-she could be used to tell us how not all faeries are bad (Cardan does not count here).

I just really hope that we see more of Jude and Fand's relationship in Holly Black's upcoming novel.

Maybe it's just self-projection, but I honestly don't think that you'd be that sad if I ended it.

I mean, I'm just a random person online. We interact sometimes, we comment and reblog and like, but at the end of the day, we're just names on a screen and we don't even interact that much.

Would you really be that devastated if I ended it? I don't think so.

I'm not sure how I'd feel if you ended it and I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I don't think that I'd be that sad if you ended it. I mean, I would be somewhat anguished for some time, and I'd feel empty if I thought about you for too long, but other than that, I don't know if I'd feel anything. Maybe it's just because I'm not that emotionally attached to things. I'm so sorry if I sound like a bad person, I don't mean to be.

This isn't meant to be edgy or accusatory or anything, just my honest thoughts.
