The day Alfred got his Model T
I know that this is meant to be a silly post, but I've been OBSESSED with this concept since I first read the chapter, so-
Romano living with America makes sense. Italy, specifically South italy, had the highest amount of immigration to the US of all the European countries at that time and became very influential on American society later on. They were also "birds of passage". Every European that immigrated to the US had the intention of returning home one day, but the Italians are the only ones that succeeded at that en masse. Half of the 4-5 million that immigrated would return to Italy, some going back and forth for years. This let US Italians maintain a very strong connection with their home country, so it makes sense why Romano would follow them to the US. He's just another bird of passage who isn't actually "immigrating", just away from home for work for a bit. If Romano was the only one to go live with America, I wouldn't question it.
But Lithuania being there is weird. It's hard to track Lithuanian immigrants because they were counted as Russians beneath the Russian Empire until the 1900s. But it's believed that about 20% of the population of Lithuania fled to the US, particularly Jews. Which, while that isn't insignificant....that threshold is VERY low. You're telling me it only takes 20% of a nation's population to compel them to do something drastic? What about the 80% you left behind, Toris!! Further, the Lithuanian diaspora was no where near as big or as influential as the Italian, so what I'm saying is Lithuania should not be there only to decide to just, return home, someday, I guess? But he is, which implies that it only takes about a fourth of a population immigrating somewhere to make the nation follow. America is going to have a LOT of roommates under this model.
All in all, I headcanon that none of them really HAD to immigrate to the US. In true hetalia fashion, I like to think all of them just got bored/curious and wanted to leave home for a while and see what America was up to.
It's hard to put them in chronological order, but from 1840-1914, here's all the countries that I think would've lived with America in the NE, both working for him or just passing through:
Ireland, Various German States (Prussia? 🤨), Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Romania, Russia, Austria, Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Greece, Slovakia, Czech, Ukraine, Finland
China would've been there too, but ONLY at America's house out West. And he would've hated working for someone the age equivalent of a 2-year-old to him.
So- if Romano and Lithuania ended up living with America when a large number of their people immigrated to the U.S.... wouldn't that mean that most of the other nations have lived with America at some point?
Did Germany and China both live with him during the California Gold Rush?
Did Russia live with him after the Cold War?
And just how many nations were living with him after WWII and the Korea War when war brides were coming back to live in the States?
I'm just imagining America's house as the nation equivalent of a Denny's at 3 am. Everyone ends up there, usually because something went horribly wrong, and if they're very lucky breakfast will be edible.
idk what their ship name is but i want it to be a thing
Do you think Alfred and Matt are twins, or just brothers? What do you think their dynamic is a bros? Are they closer to each other than their European allies, or is there like a kind of rivalry going on? I just long for more matt content
An ask about Canada, hell yes!! ily anon ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
In my head they are most definitely 100% twins. In fact, my characterization of them is largely based on a pair of twins I know in real life.
Matthew and Alfred balance each other but not in the sense that they always like or do opposite things. Instead they’re a kind of regulator for each other. Whenever Alfred starts talking too much, Matthew gently involves the other person back into the conversation. Whenever Matthew becomes too shy or reserved Alfred intentionally buggers or provokes him so he can loosen up. Whenever Alfred goes too far in his opinions, Matthew would take the opposite stance to moderate the debate. These are all very obvious when they interact with other people – in those cases the two behave almost like a single unit and it’s very nice to be around them because each observes different social cues.
As for what they’re like in general, it’s very easy to get the impression that they annoy each other but it’s all classic sibling behavior (maybe taken a bit to the extreme). They will always always prank the other if the opportunity presents itself. There’s a lot of smack talking and comebacks. In fact instead of ganging up against someone they would purposefully take opposite sides in other people’s arguments.
In reality it’s all harmless because they know each other extremely well. They both enjoy the opposition because Alfred knows he’s difficult to argue with so people don’t bother and Matthew knows that his softer personality can cause people to avoid conflict with him.
As for rivalry, I don’t think that’s the case with them. Opinions are subjective so it’s not rivalry there. Where skills are concerned they’ve long found that they can be a killer team if they work together. Once one of them finds something he’s good at, there’s a high chance the other will try and compliment that instead of besting it. For instance, whenever they flew fighters in the war, Matthew would be Alfred’s wingman (in the military sense of course, but hey who knows). But in a heavy bomber Matthew would be pilot and Alfred his flight engineer
I don’t know too much about sports except for football (aka soccer) but I imagine the same situation there. Basically both of them are happy to take an assisting position if they notice the other has a knack for something.
All of this is hardly subconscious, they’re both just very aware of each other.
And yeah, I do imagine them being closer than the Europeans. Even from a historical standpoint, similarities in Europe meant little with how closely crammed they were there and every neighbor was a potential threat. Matt and Alfred on the other hand are in the opposite situation where they had to learn to live together because they had little to choose from in terms of company. I imagine their differences did initially cause some friction but eventually they grew old enough to realize that the fact that they cared about each other was more important than any argument or annoyance.
I think their dynamic also works because I imagine they’re fundamentally wired differently. Alfred is a tunnel vision kind of guy who tends to hyperfocus and see things from his own pov in relationships. Matthew meanwhile is the type of person who is aware of everything and can divide his attention while tackling multiple things (incidentally this also causes him anxiety sometimes – when he puts too many things on his mind) and focuses more on how others see him or feel.
As a result they know they can fall back on each other for advice. It’s like having that magic point of view on demand that can reveal a side of a conflict you were previously blind to. Which is also a source for mutual respect.
once in a while i hear from people that i produce some of the only hetalia content they still enjoy and while i am always chuffed to hear it i realize that most of my content is so niche that it’s barely recognizable as hetalia sO HERE IS AN HETALIA FOR YOU! :D
i have struggled A Lot with my relationship with aph/hws canada over the past decade and I’ve mostly realized that the only way I can make him palatable and relatable again is to portray him (ironically?) closer to how he was in canon with a few of my own tweaks… maybe in there somewhere he has a heart but it gets obscured by his 1. extreme passive aggressive sass and 2. tendency to let every single force in his life no matter how small define himself for him and Maybe if he actually did something about his mental health / quarter life crisis he’d be less of an asshole.
Like, the only reason everyone thinks he’s so nice and polite is because he is constantly apologizing for being a literal train wreck but making absoultely zero effort to be less of a train wreck because for some reason people think his executive dysfunction is Cute and Endearing when it’s actually horribly destructive.
but these days i still find him relatable because i’m currently trying to unpack a lot of figurative and literal baggage and it’s really hard to do when no one’s ever encouraged you to do it on your own before.
also he lives with a polar bear and that can’t be very good for his floors
