In honor of Mother's Day, we share this photo of Chemist, medical doctor and NASA astronaut, Anna Lee Fisher, who became the first mother in space when she embarked on mission STS-51A on the Space Shuttle Discovery. Happy Mother's Day, and keep looking up! (Photo credit: NASA) Thank you @StarTalkRadio for this groovy post! #mothersday #KeepLookingUp

Reality Check: Is Our Universe Real? The idea that everything we know is merely a construction of our minds is investigated in the next episode of the Science Channel program "Through the Wormhole," hosted by Morgan Freeman. The episode premieres Wednesday (July 17) at 10 p.m. EDT. http://bit.ly/15nFpH1

Is it a Meteoroid, Meteor or a Meteorite? It all depends on its location. If it is in space, it is a meteoroid. If it is in the Earth's atmosphere, it is a meteor. If you can pick it up off the ground, then it is a meteorite. Born this day, John Woodward February 24, 1665 in Derbyshire, United Kingdom. At the age of 16, John Woodward became an apprentice to a linen draper in London, and then later he learned about medicine from Dr. Peter Barwick, who was a doctor for King Charles II. While studying medicine, Woodward found a fascination with fossils that eventually led him to his work with plants. In 1699, Woodward published his hydroponics experiments with spearmint. He tested different types of soil mixed with the water, and he learned plants with a less-pure water source grew better than plants grown in purely distilled water. Woodward concluded that certain substances with minerals in the water encouraged plant growth. Fellow STEMists who want to become botanists can be on their way to doing research and investigations through the engineering design process found in our monthly-themed Groovy Lab in a Box. Academics in a Box Inc. was founded to inspire in students a desire to learn more about the sciences and humanities. Our products aim to allow students a new way to experience the beauty, poetry, and wonder of our universe through hands-on experience. Our foundation is based on the ideas that by “doing” and “experiencing,” students are more motivated to become inquisitive about the world around them. It’s this curiosity and creative thinking that are at the heart of developing a love of learning. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is used as a guide to ensure that our products supplement the learning that takes place in the classroom. We aim to take students beyond simple memorization of facts and figures by helping them gain a better understanding of significant science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) practice and application, as well as gain a deeper appreciation of the materials they are presented with.
