Guuys i'm back! And with the finest team black arguments in town! Today our contestant is:
"Alicent is an evil bitch for trying to expose Rhaenyra's sons as bastards, she could have gotten them killed!"
This one is surprisingly popular amongst the blacks, but unsurprisingly dumb. And I'll say why:
First things first, can someone explain to me the reason behind everyone's belief that the strong boys would be killed for this? They are just kids, who took no part in Rhaenyra's lies regarding their legitimacy. The poor children actually believed they were Laenor's sons! (Well except Jace but whatever.)
The real culprits in this mess are their parents, who willingly had them while being fully aware that if exposed on their bs they would be punished. The boys wouldn't be harmed at all, the worst thing that would happen to them would be losing the Velaryon family name, becoming Waters, and getting kicked off the line of succession.
Sucks for them but definitely better that a sword in the neck.
Speaking of their parents. Nyra would have to be disinherited for attempting to put her baseborns on the throne, cheating on her spouse and generally bringing so much shame to the royal family.
Sucks for her too, but you know, reap what you sow girl. You knew the risks.
The one who would actually face serious consequences would be Harwin, for sleeping with the princess and all. Normally he would probably have to be executed, but not before being given the chance to take the black, which he would definitely pick.
So yeah, sucks for you sure, but you keep your head, your dick, and only lose your inheritance. Lmao on second thought this would be a better alternative for him, Larys wouldn't have to kill him to inherit, and he'd be freezing his ass on the wall instead of burning it in Harrenhall.
Happy ending for Lord Strong.
And with that said Alicent would not be causing the deaths of innocent kids and would be able to secure the future reign of her son, so why exactly would that make her an evil selfish bitch? When has trying to avoid your children's inevitable execution at the hands of their half sister been a bad thing?
Team black only really wants Ali to bend over and die, just so that their feminist queen can take over lol. They unironically demand a woman to give up all her agency for someone else, how progressive of them.
Funny how I made this long ass post explaining how Nyra would have to face the consequences of her actions for once in her life but obviously this would only happen in an au where Vizzy was an actual competent king who didn't just live to give his "only child" all that she asks him to.
In our timeline he would just keep denying their bastardry and cutting tongues of all who disagree. And if it became impossible for him to deny reality anymore, he would immediately pardon Nyra and Harwin and legitimize the Strongs, then promptly pretend that nothing happened. It would be infuriating, but also hilariously bad ngl.
Women written by GRRM:
Quotes above from the characters : Catelyn Stark, Alicent Hightower, Arianne Martell, Daenerys Targaryen, Rhaenyra Targaryen, Catelyn Stark(again), Sansa Stark.
Women Written by Ryan Condal:
I’m sorry but Rhaenyra fighting in the war is Mary Sue behavior and if true will prove once again the writers …will likely be unable to write a compelling women.
Which is a real shame because I love book Rhaenyra.
They would rather do the usual people are just mean and hate a girlboss shtick then have to write about the nuances of a woman trying to become the first Queen in her extremely cut throat dynasty.
A woman dealing with the ramifications of (likely) postpartum depression. A woman who was meant to rule since she was a child and instead she is now recovering from a traumatic agonizing birth. A birth where her own husband ignored and later assaulted her. Who is going to protect her now that her father is dead? What does it mean to be a Queen when you have suffered beyond belief in childbirth and now you cannot even ride your dragon, that dragon that marks you as “better”, no your male children must fight for you. Then die for you.
The woman lauded as the Realm’s Delight who told her fierce aunt who did fight not only for her own rights but Rhaenyra’s that the realm denied her as Rhaenys the Queen Who Never Was but bent the knee to her.
What’s the difference between The Queen Who Never Was & The Realms Delight?, what’s the difference between a Queen who fought and one who didn’t? and what does it mean that they both ended up dead?
A woman who becomes increasingly paranoid and fearful (rightfully so) after being wronged so many times. A flawed woman, a woman who’s entitled, a woman who wants to rule but has internalized misogyny. A woman who believes she’s above the rest. A woman who has never had any physical training in war or battle because she has always lived in the lap of luxury and privilege and now finds herself in a war.
So she dresses up in the style of her warrior ancestress despite never taking up arms. Is it for comfort? Or strength? If she could ride her dragon would it matter? When Syrax like her has only ever known peace and her son’s murder rides her warrior ancestresses own mount Vhagar. A dragon that helped win Seven Kingdoms against one that has never known violence?
Things weren’t suppose to be that way, and every wrong makes for a crueler and angrier woman. She won’t die in battle she means to sit on that throne.
She never wanted to make a better world, she simply wanted to enjoy the rights every other entitled man of her lineage has had but instead she must go to war? Saera Targaryen was punished for thinking she could have multiple partners like the men in her family. Rhaenyra Targaryen is punished and compared to one of the worst men in her lineage.
What does it mean for a woman to be vile and STILL have been wronged and STILL have been robbed of what was hers because of her gender?
Why must she be this paragon of perfection?
For better or for worse the writers are terrified of making Rhaenyra unlikeable and it’s just so boring.
I started off watching HotD without siding with either team, because come on, the Targs (black or green) are entertaining but aren't worthy of rooting for. In fact I like the idea of Jace on the Iron throne simply because he's bearing the y-chromosome of the Strongs. Basically, I'm just really really anti-royalist, anti-imperialist.
But the more I see how insane team Black is, the more I want to side with team Green out of a spite.
Team Green mostly recognizes the crimes of their characters and joke about mew mews and mommy's war criminal. Meanwhile team Black are rejoicing in the upcoming blood and cheese, because threatening to rape a 6 y.o. girl and murdering a 6 y.o. boy is what they deem as justice.
Team Black are so pro-racial superiority, it's kind of insane. The racist shit they say about Nettles. The romanticisation of incest as a way to keep blood pure, and how children of Daemyra are worthier of the throne because of their blood purity. How Hightowers, Velaryons and others are criticized for being ambitious yet Rhaenyra is praised for trying to put her non-Velaryon son on a throne he has no rights for.
"The Targaryens are the ones who created the iron throne!" Yes, with fire and blood, by burning and murdering people until they surrendered. It's like an nuclear country conquering non-nuclear countries, and creating a system based on racial superiority.
And did Strongs build a Driftmark for Lucerys to claim it? But he's a Targaryen, and "that's all that matters".
So no, I do not buy the whole "the blacks are heroes and morally righteous ones" shit at all. Fuck your Targaryen superiority.

Thank you for your honesty, Ser Criston.
"It's not a king who sits the Iron Throne these days, good sister. It's a queen."
"If the king will not seek justice, the queen will."
"What have I done but what was expected of me? Forever upholding the kingdom, the family, the law. Where is duty? Where is sacrifice?"
"The beacon on the Hightower, do you know what color it glows when Oldtown calls its banners to war?"

Something striking about the relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent that the show tries to awkwardly scoot past is that time and time again, Alicent sacrifices her own interests and desires for Rhaenyra's benefit, while Rhaenyra never does the reverse. Alicent teaches Rhaenyra history, dresses and crowns her for her investment ceremony, comforts her after her mother's death, advises Viserys *against* naming Aegon heir, supports reconciliation between Rhaenyra and Viserys that ultimately gets her father and sole supporter fired, seriously considers switching sides to her despite the severe risk to her own children, and goes against her father to try and save her life. The most Rhaenyra gives Alicent is a few hollow words of praise in episode 8.
Though the show doesn't seem to realize it, their relationship isn't one of equals, but of master and servant. Otto and Alicent are parallels in this sense - both are in a sense, servants of the Targaryens who do not wish to merely serve. But the show buys into the expectation of their service and Targaryen masterdom uncritically: the great crime of Otto and Alicent is their attempt to subvert the natural order of things rather than meekly serving their Targaryen masters. It's why Alicent is most sympathetic when she is loyal to Rhaenyra, but the reverse isn't true, because why would Rhaenyra be expected to do anything for a mere servant like Alicent?
Which really just goes to show the big class blind spot the show has. By presenting "goodness" as solely a function of how closely one can follow Viserys' orders, they're regurgitating one aspect of medieval social customs to oppose another. With this context, Rhaenyra and Alicent's relationship feels less healthy and a lot more like a premonition of Alicent's relationship to Viserys, with similar power imbalances. Rhaenyra and Alicent love each other, but Rhaenyra sees Alicent as a sidekick at best, doesn't take her seriously as someone with her own inner life and desires, and is sensitive to Alicent's perceived disobedience ("questioning my virtue is an act of treason.")
I think it also gives context to Criston and Alicent's relationship, given that Criston is *also* relatively low nobility, and a servant to the Targaryens, who feels taken advantage of by them, and whose great crime is trying to be something other than a servant, to *make* kings, not just to serve them.
Mainly a Hotd blog but I also enjoy talking about Asoiaf and Aot. Book!Alicent and Criston slander is not permitted here. 19
