FINALLY found an HQ version of this photo, I’ve been searching for ages! All of the Mercury and New Nine astronauts (with instructors) at survival training in Panama, June 1963.
Standing, from left to right: Wally Schirra, Neil Armstrong, Gordo Cooper, Deke Slayton, Tom Stafford, Jim Lovell, John Young, John Glenn (mostly hidden behind Pete), Pete Conrad, Ed White, Gus Grissom, Alan Shepard, Scott Carpenter, Jim McDivitt, Frank Borman, and Elliot See.
I love love love this photo! Must’ve been on the last day of training–everyone looks adequately filthy (except Ed, who, as usual, looks like a model). Even Frank is smiling! And Gus… well, Gus is being his typical mischievous self ;)

“He might as well have been the brother I never had, a man of gentle strength and quiet humor. There was something very special about him. He really was the astronaut’s astronaut, a handsome and powerfully built man who actually seemed indestructible.” -Frank Borman on Ed White
Not in the best condition, but having some memorabilia is awesome. Hopefully one day I’ll be reading “Man Walks On Mars” as SpaceX progresses through the next decade.
Shhh…he’s spotted us.

I’m not happy with it, but it’s DONE
(you really don’t want to know how long it took me)
This was supposed to be a special birthday post but then I decided against it so here’s a random gif set of Neil for your viewing pleasure ✨
Someone is getting ready to take those nice “first American spacewalk” pictures.
