I don't get what you mean by the fandom old ship name thing...what would you call them
*Gets out her monocle and a giant tome about the history of shipping*Β
Back in the ancient days, young one, even before my time, ships were originally named by putting the charactersβ names back to back with a backslash separating them (i.e. Kirk/Spock). This was before the dawn of the internet, when fan magazines were the only way to access fanfiction (OH, THE HORROR). The fandom termΒ βslashβ was derived from the aforementioned backslash, popularized by the first recognized gay ship, which was in fact, Kirk/Spock (you can check your communications textbooks, Iβm not making this up). This was how all ships were distinguished in fan magazines etc. even through the early days of fanfiction.Β
When fanfiction REALLY started to pick up and gain popularity, helped along greatly by the dawn of the internet, specially devoted webistes, and the Harry Potter generation, ships were shortened to character initials and a backslash (i.e. Harry and Ginny was H/G). Then, fic names started to get creative by coming up with terms that identified the characters (i.e. Remus/Sirius was known as WolfStar). The latter is the kind of naming I was referring to. In fact, a lot of fandoms populated with FandomOldβ’ shippers, still use this system. For instance, Once Upon a Time seems to use this system (Iβm not part of this fandom, but it pops up on my dash every now and again). I believe they use names like SwanQueen and CaptainSwan instead of the name smushing method.Β
The name smushing method came about in the mid 2000s when celebrities were given smushed couple names and it crossed over the to the fandoms.Β
Honestly, Victuuri, is the only smushed couple name Iβve ever really loved because it fits the couple, because it sounds like Victory. Whereas other couples would be hilarious using the older method. For instance Chris/Phichit could be IntoxicatedSelfie or JJ/Yurio* could be something like KittenKing.Β
Note: Now that I feel ancient, I would like to protest that I am not, in fact, that old. But I am still a permanent resident of the FandomOldβ’ porch.Β
*Example ships do not necessarily denote ships I ship, but there is NO ship hate in the Spice Capades.Β
Do you have a FandomOldβ’ ship name for Yuri on Ice? Hit me withΒ βem!Β
Itβs incredibly important to me that the anime decided to include this scene that wasnβt in the manga. In the manga, Maomao does pass out in Jinshiβs lap after saving him from what was obviously an assassination attempt.
HOWEVER, the manga cuts off at this point, keeping strictly in Maomaoβs perspective, and cuts straight to when she regains consciousness in bed after being treated for her injuries. The manga doesnβt show how she got back. They SAY how, and she briefly mentions, βwow that must have been embarrassing; he carried me back,β but we donβt SEE it. We donβt get to feel the true impact of what that means. But the anime DID show us, and holy shit.
They SHOW us how taboo this is. They show Jinshi carrying her out of the temple, after a public attempt on his life.
They show us the shock and horror on Lakanβs face as Jinshi silently walks past him. Horror at the state his daughter is in, horror at another manβa man with a status he could never dare to questionβstaking such a public claim over his child, horror at the fact that he could never have this level of closeness with her (as Maomao would never allow it).
Everyone hides their gazes, as is their custom when someone of his rank passes by, but the air is different this time. Jinshi is furious, heβs terrified, and he could not give a single shit about how inappropriate it looks to these palace officials.
The shot that slowly follows her trail of bloodβeven though itβs a small detailβthat in particular leaves such a intense impression of how poignant this is for him.
Maomao talked about this scene in the manga like it was nothing to her. She did what she set out to do: she saved the person who was targeted by the attack. She didnβt even know the target would be someone she knew. But she has no idea that this happened afterwards as a result of her bravery. To her, it likely wasnβt even an act of bravery at all. She acted on impulse; she did what she knew was the right thing to do.
The anime didnβt need to include this, because the manga didnβt show it. But damn, Iβm so glad they did.
its a mystery
Your art is so cute :3
