As someone who changed his name just for fun when I thought I was still cis, i promise most people are ok with accepting a new name, even if you lie and say it’s a nickname. I promise. It’s really easy to just casually go “hey I wanna go by Bob now, it’s an old nickname I wanna bring back” like. Just start introducing yourself to new ppl, no one knows better. and if someone accidentally deadnames you just go haha no I go by my nickname now.

It sucks that ppl treat nicknames as more sacred than trans ppls choice names but still.

Man, I love long passwords.

Office 365 now allows me to have 256 characters as a password. So I can use entire sentences on sensitive systems. Like, “To boldly go where no man has gone before!” (BTW that is not actually one of my passwords, I’m not stupid enough to put them on the Internet.) Because my brain is such a melange of catchphrases and funny lines and memes in text, I can pick any goddamn thing and it will be more memorable than n$Wf0k^%8&dCfRp*), or whatever stupid thing my browser or password protection program suggests.

I don’t even need to go with “correct horse battery staple” (see XKCD about that one), I can go with *stuffing the breadsticks into my purse* or *sees butterfly* “Is this a pigeon?” or “I’m being pursued by an insane military commander”. Or a line from an obscure Japanese pop song from the late 1980′s. (None of these are actually any of my passwords except maybe the obscure Japanese pop songs.)

Computers actually have a harder time cracking a password the longer it is; a dictionary attack doesn’t fail on leetspeak anymore (replacing your i’s with 1 and your o’s with 0, for example), but after a certain point, they won’t even try dictionary attack because it’s more likely that your password can be cracked by very, very quickly going through all the possibilities for each of your 8 or 9 or 10 characters. They’ll try “password” and “admin” and your username and every variation they can manage of those, and then move on to brute force. But if your sentence is 35 characters long that makes it exponentially vastly harder to crack that way. Yet almost all of our systems want us to use nonsensical passwords made of random garbage characters that we can’t possibly remember, and use a unique one for every credential we have, so we must rely on a password management system… which is a single point of failure.

It is so much better when you can use passwords like “Looks like this is a job for SUPERMAN!”
