i have reached the bit in the spear cuts through water where keema and jun start hearing each other's internal narration and the best i can do to express how i'm feeling right now is i need to eat this book which is.

well.

why you should read Realm of the elderlings

- canonical gender fluid/ nonbinary character who is a main part of the plot

- the gays most heartbreaking love story ever told

- depressed main character

-pirates, magic and dragons all in one book

-insane world building,

- sarcastic animal side kicks

- absolutely devastating plot lines if your into that

- complex and extremely imperfect characters

hey has anyone pointed out the fact that neil’s mother was named mary (as in jesus’ mother) and his bf’s middle name is joseph (as in jesus’ earthly father)?? that’s gotta mean something but idk what. best i can come up with is nora feeling silly about neil’s daddy issues

EDIT: i cracked it. as neil’s biological mother, mary feels a responsibility for him based on their shared lineage and half of him being her. in contrast, andrew—like joseph—chooses to care for neil without an underlying sense of familial obligation

he paid off her indenture so she could be free, bought her a ship and found her a first mate so she could follow her dream, and brought her her parents so she could see them again, all while she promises to return to him

man had the most extreme trauma and armor up and still managed to make the baddest girl ketterdam has ever seen fall hard for him

that’s 10/10 game imo

foreshadowing done well makes me go feral like there’s NOTHING better than getting to the end a book or an important storyline moment and realising that the author laced information so intricately into their writing that weren’t noticeable upon first read but when you read back sections they’re light giant red flags like wow writing is amazing

literally every part of this book is insane without context and I love that

The Bowl of Heaven arc did give us some good things
