Someone told my ex-dad (not a sex thing; he just disowned me) that I’m trans and now he’s threatening to come to work and make a scene, and I know I should be upset, but like. What’s he gonna say exactly? And to whom? Because imagining a haggard and likely shitfaced Pennsylvania construction worker barging through the grocery store like, “HEY!!! THAT BROAD-HIPPED 5'3” EFFEMINATE KID WITH THE CONSPICUOUSLY BIZARRE NAME WHO SPEAKS IN A CARTOONISHLY AFFECTED CARICATURE OF MASCULINITY AIN’T GOT NO DICK!!! YOU GONNA BUY SCRATCH OFF TICKETS FROM SOME KINDA DICKLESS ABOMINATION??“ is wild. What’s it going to accomplish? Or is he gonna call my manager? “HELLO, I’D LIKE TO REPORT A FRAUD IN YOUR DELI DEPARTMENT. THERE IS NOT SAUSAGE AS ADVERTISED.” What the fuck.
natalie portman had the last name of every female director that wasn’t nominated embroidered into the cape that she’s wearing at the oscars...iconic
So... it finally downed on y'all that Rick Riordan portrayed pocs inappropriately? Are we surprised a white cishet man from usa wrote poc from a point of ignorance in a problematic way? Come on! Pocs have been criticizing him for years but y'all wouldnt LISTEN.
I'm not really into cancel culture because it doesnt work. This people dont get "erased" from history, their mistakes get erased while their art lives on - they should be acknowledged and held accountable. And I understand people make mistakes and they should have room to grow. But what irks me about seeing "he tries" type of posts defending him is that he doesnt. Maybe when he wrote the books a decade ago he was trying, and well intentioned. I can understand that. And yet if you read his "apology" you'll see he isn't trying anymore. Hes done growing and caring. Instead of writing "I get how it can be offensive, I didn't know better back then, knowing what I know now I would've written this characters differently" but no, he tried to defend it and stood by it. He needs to be held accountable. He needs to know this is not okay. Stop defending him with "the books were very subversive/progressive for their time" that can be said for a lot questionable works of fiction (like Harry Potter or To Kill a Mockkngbird for example) and it doesnt make it right. If we were just talking about what he wrote ten years ago it would be different, we could say that he wasnt being racist but that hes portrayal of poc was problematic for his lack of information, but no, he decided to take the racist label by steppping in and taking a stand defending his previous mistakes and not listening, and trying to decide over poc what is racist - instead of acknowledging he made a mistake and moving on. We grown folk but hes not being mature or "trying".
You know what? No. No, Hatsune Miku did not write Harry Potter.
J. K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter. And we need to accept that.
Harry Potter isn’t some pure unproblematic beacon of perfection that we can just choose to erase the scummy author from and enjoy without guilt. Harry Potter is very much rooted in Rowling’s view of the world. The blatant antisemitism in the portrayal of the goblins, the entire race of slave creatures that actually really like being slaves and Hermione’s attempts to free them are largely played off as a joke, the almost complete dearth of canon characters of color (and then when she does put canonical characters of color in, they’re… Nagini…), the complete lack of respect for other cultures (the Japanese wizarding school literally translates to “Magic Place” in Japanese, Cho Chang is not even remotely a proper Chinese name, don’t get me started on her usage of Native American folklore), the almost complete lack of LGBTQ+ characters, the “Dumbledore is gay!” baiting, the lycanthropy-as-HIV metaphor that involves one of the werewolves intentionally infecting as many people as he can, with a preference for targeting children, no less…
These are all very much present in Harry Potter. They’re not things you can just ignore. And they’re there because Rowling wrote them in.
I know you read Harry Potter as a kid and loved it. I know when you read Harry Potter as a kid you probably didn’t even notice how shitty all this stuff was. I certainly didn’t. But you can’t go back to that time. You can’t go back to when you were 10, when you were consuming this media and loving it uncritically without notice or regard for its more problematic elements. You can’t go back to being a kid again.
And that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’re required to wholeheartedly condemn this important part of your childhood. You can still enjoy these books while acknowledging that they’ve got some really shitty things in them. You can enjoy Harry Potter as a mature adult. You don’t have to be a kid again to like it. And you’re perfectly allowed to hate on Rowling for her shittiness, past and present, while still loving Harry Potter.
So don’t say Harry Potter was written by Hatsune Miku. It wasn’t. It was written by J. K. Rowling, warts and all.
Before I say anything about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s trial, might I say that the judge on this case is very familiar and close to Amber, making it a very acquittal case. The judge should have stepped down considering that he is becoming more biased with every minute of this case.
Please read further for info about Johnny and Amber’s relationship;
The Beginning
In 2009, Johnny met Amber on the set of ‘The Rum Diary’. Johnny starred as Paul Kemp, a journalist who takes a job in Puerto Rico — based off of Hunter S. Thompson’s book of the same name. Thompson was Johnny’s real-life friend and idol.
Amber played Chenault — a woman who is engaged to another man — who Kemp is immediately smitten with as soon as he sees her.
Amber Heard told Vogue in 2011 — quote on quote — “Working with Johnny was torture. It was better than I ever imagined, which is really saying something.”
Johnny and Amber started dating around the end of 2011 or the start of 2012. It was also that year in 2012 that Johnny called it quits with Vanessa Paradis after 14 years of dating. Johnny and Vanessa had two kids; Lily-Rose Depp (1999), and John Christopher (2002).
Amber had also split up with partner Tasya Van Ree at the same time. USA Today reported that Amber had been arrested in 2009 on a charge of physically assaulting then-girlfriend Van Ree at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in Washington. The two had gotten into a disagreement after Amber allegedly grabbed and hit Van Ree’s arm.
All the charges were dropped. However, with Van Ree herself saying that Amber was “wrongfully” accused by the cops who “misinterpreted and over-sensationalized” the incident.
The Middle
In 2014, rumors broke after seeing Amber Heard wearing an engagement ring. Johnny himself had seemed to confirm the engagement when he went into a video interview with The Daily Mail after discussing wedding planning and pointing out that he was wearing ‘a chick’s ring’ on his finger. “It’s probably a dead giveaway, isn’t it? Not very subtle,” Johnny had said.
In 2015, Amber and Johnny married in a private ceremony. After several years of dating, Johnny and Amber married in a very private ceremony in their home in LA.
The Start Of The Accusations
In 2016, Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny and accused him of physical abuse. On May 23, 2016, Amber filed for divorce from Johnny and also obtained a temporary restraining order against him. She claimed that Johnny had physically abused her during their relationship, and said it had been the actions of his alcohol or drug consumptions that had forced it.
She had claimed Johnny had left her with a bruised face when he threw his phone at her. However, a police spokesman told People that an investigation into the domestic incident radio call found no crime had taken place.
Johnny had denied these accusations and through his representatives said Amber was “attempting to secure and premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.”
A $7 million settlement was reached out of court on August 16, 2016 when Amber testified under oath at a deposition, but a settlement was eventually reached after she withdrew her request for a domestic violence restraining order. She also rescinded her spousal support request for $50,000 a month.
Amber and Johnny also released a joint statement saying: “Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but was always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain.” It continued: “There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm.”
Amber received $7 million from the divorce but donated it to charity, according to People.
In 2017, Johnny and Amber’s divorce was finalized. Amber had kept the dogs that were at the centre of the 2015 scandal in which the couple failed to declare animals in Australia. Meanwhile, Johnny retained sole possession of all properties, including his private island in the Bahamas, as well as his collection of classic cars and motorcycles.
The Other Accusations
In December 2018, Amber wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post saying she was abused. She wrote about the treatment of women in domestic abuse cases.
In the op-ed, Amber stated: “I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out.”
Amber had never mentioned her ex-husband by name, but by using context clues, Johnny’s team could tell who she was talking about.
In 2019, Johnny Depp sued Amber for $50 million for defamation over the WaPo article. The suit said that Amber “is not a victim of domestic abuse, she is a perpetrator,” and denied that Johnny had ever abused her. Instead, the suit stated the Amber’s accusations were part of an “elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity,” for the actress.
Johnny’s lawyers stated: “The op-ed defended on the central premise that Ms. Heard was a domestic abuse victim and that Mr. Depp perpetrated domestic violence against her.”
In a court filing that attempted to dismiss Johnny’s defamation suit, Amber detailed multiple instances of alleged abuse that she said occurred during their marriage as referred to him as the ‘monster,’ per Variety.
Amber claimed that she still had scars on her arms and feet from an incident where Johnny allegedly threw her through a ping pong table and dragged her through broken glass. The suit is still ongoing in the US.
In 2020, phone recordings were released in which Amber admitted to ‘hitting’ Johnny. In January, phone recording obtained by the Daily Mail were put out holding Amber admitting to hitting Johnny.
Amber is saying: “I’m sorry that I didn’t . . . hit you across the face in a proper slap, but I was hitting you, it was not punching you. Babe, you’re not punched.” It continued, “I don’t know what the motion of my actual hand was, but you’re fine, I did not hurt you, I did not punch you, I was hitting you.”
Meanwhile, Johnny had said in these recordings. “I left last night. Honestly, I swear to you because I just couldn’t take the idea of more physicality, more physical abuse on each other.” In continued, “Because had we continued it, it would have gotten f—-ing bad. And baby, I told you this once. I’m scared to death we are a f—-ing crime scene right now.”
Amber had replied, “I can’t promise you I won’t get physical again. God, I f—-ing sometimes get so mad I lose it.”
The Trials
On July 7, 2020, the three-week libel trial had began. Johnny had fought News Group Newspapers, the publisher of The Sun, in court over a 2018 article in which they called him a ‘wife beater’ in reference to Johnny and Amber’s former marriage. Johnny sued both the publisher and The Sun’s executive editor Dan Wootton for libel.
Ryder and Paradis both provided statements in Johnny’s defense:
Ryder stated: “The idea that he is an incredibly violent person is the farthest thing from the Johnny I knew and loved. I cannot wrap my head around these accusations.”
Meanwhile, Paradis wrote that Amber’s accusations are “nothing like the true Johnny I have known, and from my personal experience of many years, I can say he was never violent or abusive to me.”
The trial began in early July, and lasted three weeks. Johnny alleged that Amber had defecated in his bed and punched him, to which Amber denied. Johnny had also accused Amber of having extra-marital affairs with James Franco and Elon Musk, to which Amber also denied.
Amber, meanwhile, accused Johnny of physically abusing her, and also accused him of throwing a phone at her face, which she says left her bruised. Furthermore, Amber had stated that Johnny threatened to kill her on several occasions.
Three months after the blockbuster trial began, Judge Mr Justice Nicol ruled that The Sun was correct in reporting that Johnny was violent towards his ex-wife Amber Heard.
In reaching his ruling, Nicol referred to 14 separate incidents that The Sun’s lawyers cited to justify calling Johnny a “wife-beater.”
Following the ruling, a spokesman for The Sun stated: “The Sun has stood up and campaigned for the victims of domestic abuse for over 20 years. Domestic abuse victims must never be silenced and we thank the judge for his careful consideration and thank Amber Heard for her courage in giving evidence to the court.”
In a statement seen by the BBC, Amber’s lawyer in the US stated: “For those of us present for the London High Court trial, the decision and judgement are not a surprise. Very soon, we will be presenting even more voluminous evidence in the US.” It continued, “We are committed to obtaining justice for Amber Heard in the US Court and defending Ms. Heard’s right to free speech.”
Johnny has strenuously denied all claims that he was violent towards Amber and in a statement published shortly after his ruling, his lawyers stated: “This decision is as perverse as it is bewildering. Most troubling is the judge’s reliance on the testimony of Amber Heard, and corresponded disregard of the mountain of counter-evidence from police officers, medical practitioners, her own former assistant, other challenged witnesses and an array of documentary evidence which completely undermined the allegations, point by point. All of this was overlooked. The judgement is so flawed that it would be ridiculous for Mr. Depp not to appeal this decision. In the meantime, we hope that in contrast to this case, the ongoing liberal proceedings in America are equitable, with both parties providing full disclosure rather than one side strategically cherry-picking what evidence can and cannot be relied on.”
Johnny has also launched a $50m case against Amber in the US over a column she penned for the Washington Post about her experience as a victim of domestic violence. While Johnny is not named in her piece, his legal team insists that it is strongly referred to him.
Johnny was denied the right to appeal by the court’s ruling. Johnny Depp and his legal team had hoped to overturn the court’s ruling with an appeal but in a statement that was made public on November 25, Judge Nicol refused to grant Johnny the permission to appeal against his judgement, stating: “I do not consider that the proposed grounds of appeal have a reasonable prospect of success.”
The judge had also ordered Johnny to make an initial payment of £630,000 ($841,733) to News Group Newspapers, publisher of The Sun, to cover its legal fees. Johnny still has until December 7 to apply for an appeal above Judge Nicol at the Court of Appeal.
In March 2021, Johnny was once again denied permission to appeal against the high court ruling by the Court of Appeals in London. Johnny and his lawyers submitted an application to the Court of Appeals in London to obtain permission to contest the High Court ruling that he assaulted his ex-wife.
However, the Court of Appeals judged denied Johnny’s application stating the original hearing “was full and fair” and that the trial judge “gave thorough reasons for his conclusions which have not been shown even arguably to be vitiated by any error of approach or mistake of law.”
During the evidence given at the application hearing, Johnny’s lawyers said that they had not received a fair trial and presented "fresh evidence" that alleged Amber Heard lied about donating her full $7 million divorce settlement to charity.
Johnny’s lawyer Andrew Caldecott QC told the court that Amber’s claim about the donation was a “calculated and manipulative lie” that “tipped the scales against Mr. Depp from the beginning,” The Guardian reported.
A representative for Amber stated her camp was “pleased” but not surprised by the court’s denial of Johnny’s application to appeal. “The evidence presented in the UK case was overwhelming and undeniable,” the rep told The Guardian.
Amber and Johnny’s $100 million libel suit begins April 11. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s defamation lawsuit began on April 11 at the Fairfax County Courthouse in Virginia.
The $100m Libel Suit
In opening statements, Amber’s lawyer, J. Benjamin Rottenborn, told the jury that Johnny is “going to try to turn this case into a soap opera,” referencing his tumultuous relationship with Amber, Insider reported.
Rottenborn had continued that this lawsuit is centered around the question of whether Amber was exercising her First Amendment right to Free Speech by writing an op-ed for the Washington Post about her experience with domestic violence.
“The answer is very clearly yes,” Rottenborn had said.
At one point during the proceedings, Rottenborn read out the full op-ed, and argued that it was clear that the article wasn’t meant to drudge up allegations against Johnny, but to speak about an issue impacting pending legislation. Rottenborn argued that if Amber had intended to describe her relationship with Johnny “believe me, the article would have looked very, very different.”
He had continued, “She could fill a book with those details. She would have told you about the monster, but she didn’t. That wasn’t the true point of this article,” Rottenborn said, “Because Johnny Depp brought this case, all of that is going to come out. Just know Amber Heard didn’t want to unearth for the public who the real Johnny Depp is . . . You’ll see the real Johnny Depp, behind the pirate costume.”
Johnny’s lawyer Benjamin Chew blasted Amber as a liar, saying in court that her accusations ruined Johnny’s career and alienated him from producers who once favored the movie star.
“When, like Mr. Depp, your career depends on your image and your reputation, or whether movie producers want their movies associated with you, that can be particularly harmful,” Chew had told the court.
He continued, “By choosing to lie to about her husband for her own personal benefit, Amber Heard chose to ruin his reputation.”
Johnny Depp had took the stand in court and said that Amber had ‘a need for violence’ during their relationship. On the stand Wednesday, Johnny stated that Amber was the real abuser in their relationship and the change in their relationship started with her making “little digs” and “demeaning name-calling.”
Johnny said he felt like he was “suddenly wrong” about everything, and suffered an “endless parade of insults.”
Johnny had also added that sometimes these arguments would escalate to violence with Amber shoving him or throwing a glass of wine in his face. When these arguments would start, Johnny stated that he would try to extricate himself from the situation, sometimes locking himself inside the bathroom to get away from Amber.
Johnny also stated his relationship with Amber — as well as what he described as her frequent verbal attacks — often contributed to his use of alcohol and drugs.
“I was more inspired by Ms. Heard to reach out for a numbing agent because of the constant clashes,” he had said, “I had to have something to distance my heart from those verbal attacks.”
Johnny Depp’s Testimony
Johnny had said the fight in which his finger was severed happened about a month after his 2015 wedding to Amber when she flew out to Australia to visit him as he filmed the fifth installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.
Insider previously reported that Amber arrived in Australia “very upset” about how a meeting with Johnny’s lawyers had conducted, feeling that one of the lawyers she met with had been “rude and dismissive.” Johnny had told the court that he had asked his lawyers to discuss a postnuptial agreement with Amber.
Johnny said that he was staying in a large house in Australia, and remembered locking himself in “at least nine bedrooms and bathrooms” that day “as she was banging on the doors and screaming obscenities and wanting to have physical altercation.”
At the point, Johnny stated he had been sober from drinking for some time, but noted the stress of the situation caused him to go to the bar in the house and pour himself a few shots of vodka. He continued that Amber had followed him to the bar and started yelling at him for drinking again, and proceeded to throw the bottle of vodka at him. Johnny had said the bottle flew past his face and smashed on the ground behind him.
Johnny had stated that he then went back to the bar, picked up a larger bottle of vodka, and continued to pour himself a drink. He said Amber had picked up the second bottle and threw it at him, and that this time it had made contact with his hand, slicing off his middle right finger.
“It made contact and it shattered everywhere,” he had said. “I honestly didn’t feel the pain at first, what I felt was heat and I felt as if something were dripping down my hand. Then I looked down and realized that the tip of my finger had been severed and I was looking directly at my bones sticking out and the meaty portion of the inside of your finger.”
Johnny later testified that he had lied to the doctors about how the tip of his finger was cut off rather than telling them that Amber had threw a bottle of vodka at him.
“I didn’t want to disclose that it had been Ms. Heard that had thrown a vodka bottle at me and then took my finger off, he had said. “I didn’t want to get her in trouble. I tried to just keep things as copacetic and easy as possible for everyone. I didn’t want to put her into that mix.”
Johnny had later testified that Amber was the one responsible for fecal matter found on their shared bed after a fight in which he said he was leaving her. The actor alleged that the incident happened following a fight after a dinner party for Amber’s 30th birthday on April 21, 2016.
“My initial response to that was, I laughed,” Amber stated, describing the reaction to seeing a photo of the feces. “It was so outside. It was so bizarre and so grotesque that I could only laugh.”
According to Johnny, Amber blamed the fecal incident on Pistol and Boo, her two dogs — an explanation Johnny said he found ridiculous.
“She brought up the fecal matter on the bed. She tried to blame it on the dogs,” he had stated. “They’re teacup Yorkies. They weight about 4 pounds each. I lived with these dogs. I picked up their funk. It was not the dogs.”
My Opinions
Not only do I think Amber is a manipulative and narcissistic woman, but I believe she is only saying these things to gain public attention and become known from the world. Who knows, she may even be doing this to have pity. But what I do know is that Amber Heard is guilty and she needs to be put in jail.
Judge Justice Nicol needs to step down, he is close to the defendant and it can be a biased situation, which is a very obvious opposite from the actual judge’s job to give the victim justice.
Johnny needs to have his acting jobs that he was taken out of, back. Dior is the only suitable brand that I love only for the fact that they still held a deal with him.
Everything that Amber Heard put Johnny Depp through should never be forgotten, she should be held accountable for her actions and we should all recognize the incredible and loyal actor we all love. Amber only has a shred of ‘evidence’ that Johnny ever laid a hand on her, whilst Johnny has years and years of factual evidence, photos, audio recordings, and proof that Amber was the abuser.
I know it is hard to not feel empathy for a woman who claims she was a victim of domestic violence, especially when you are a victim of domestic violence, but please, before you root for Amber, read this entire thing, look up more facts about their relationship, and research more about the workings of a manipulative abuser.
If you haven’t seen it, Amber has been mimicking the outfits Johnny has been wearing to court to take back control and power and make him feel like she’s always watching as a manipulation tactic.
