I’ve Been Really Interested In His Dark Materials Since The New TV Show Started. I Was Looking For

I’ve been really interested in His Dark Materials since the new TV show started. I was looking for more in depth research about the world building of daemons because it’s such a fascinating concept and like I discovered how daemons get their names. So when a child is born, the child’s daemon is named by their parents daemons.

So when Lyra was born and Pan started existing, that means that THIS MOTHERFUCKER

I’ve Been Really Interested In His Dark Materials Since The New TV Show Started. I Was Looking For

THIS THING is what gave Pantalaimon his name.

You could argue that Stelmaria might’ve contributed to the name but based on the fact that it was a highly scandalous affair, I doubt Asriel was anywhere near Lyra’s birth.

But like, the golden monkey being the one to name Pan is so fucking wild. Like he chose a name based on a Greek saint? A name that basically means all-merciful?

The monkey wanted Lyra to be merciful. He wanted her to have mercy.

Tide Spells

mer interruption: the following is an excerpt from one of my favourite books. Please remember to treat the sea with respect and do not leave anything behind that was not originally from the sands and sea.

Tide Spells

High Tide Spell

The high tide spell is a short, sharp piece of operative magic that you can use when something needs to be done quickly. It works best at spring tides when the tidal and lunar powers are at their peak. It is used to attract something that is urgently needed, or to make something positive happen. It is a very short spell that carries a strong sense of urgency. The spell is written using a very brief form of words in the sand or shingle as the tide is rising and just before it reaches its peak, just above the tideline. As the spell is written, the magical will is concentrated on the spell succeeding. The witch then watches until the sea has washed the spell away and the work is done.

Tide Spells

Low Tide Spell

A similar spell is worked at low tide to banish or remove something. Again, the power of this spell is very quick and concentrated; it is worked in a few minutes and sent on its way. As with the high tide spell, words are written in the sand just as the tide turns, but this time at the very lowest point of the tide, so that as it begins its climb up the shore whatever you need to banish is taken by the sea. As soon as the words have gone under the water, the spell is done. For both these spells, use as few words as possible; you could even just use initial letters. Concentrate hard on your objective as you write them into the sand then let it go so that the tide can do its work.

Imagine; Kids

Well, not specifically just kids, but human beings of a younger age. Like below twenty-ish.

I personally headcanon that children’s dæmons reflect the age of their human counterpart. Basically, I imagine their physical maturity to run parallel. Babies would have newborn animals, toddlers would have baby animals, etc. Adolescents, I feel, would have “teenage” dæmons as well, until they settle. The older you are, this would be reflected in your dæmon, despite their being a representation of your soul. They would still be tangible, after all.

So imagine a baby just starting to learn how to walk and talk, their little dæmon toddling along behind them, mimicking their gurgling noises. Sometimes the dæmon is a delicate bird with only a few feathers, or a soft kitten, or floppy-eared puppy. When the lil’ one is feeling creative, their dæmon might be a baby soft-shelled turtle, or a wobbly foal.

Imagine a pregnant woman, about six months in. Her dæmon and her are both excited, and a tad nervous, of course. They try to brush it off, though; too many hormones, and dust being attracted to the growing life inside her, readying itself to take shape and become a dæmon in only a few weeks time.

Imagine someone who’s reached the age of twenty-three, and they still haven’t settled. Teachers, friends, family- everyone says it isn’t that unusual, don’t be self conscious, plenty of people settle late. Still, they can’t help feeling uncomfortable every time their dæmon changes their form. Because how can you manage in the real, adult world without knowing who you are? Their dæmon is embarrassed about it, but reassures their human in private fiercely that there is nothing wrong with them, nothing at all.

Imagine a high school where dæmons are settling- or not settling- left and right. It’s both exhilarating and exhausting, dealing with the drama that settling dæmons brings. There are always the kids who aren’t happy with their dæmon’s settled form, whatever the reason may be. The freshman spend a fair amount of their time speculating who’ll settle first, and as what, whereas the seniors are anxiously hoping to settle before graduation. The librarians are very helpful when it comes to having full databases on every species of life on the planet that is a viable dæmon, and are eager to drag in the awkward juniors to see what kind of lizard their dæmon is.

Imagine siblings and the way their dæmons would interact. Twins would maybe try to be the same, or never stay in the same shape as their twin. Imagine an older brother and his little sister, seventeen and eight, respectively. His oversized saint bernard dæmon is very protective of the younger dæmon and girl. Or imagine three sisters, one of whom ends up with chatty bird, another with a large, speedy hare, and the last with a gazelle. Whenever they get into arguments, their dæmons will throw themselves into the fray to defend their humans.

Imagine thirteen-year-olds looking jealously at the older kids dæmons. At that age, their dæmons can’t fly very well yet as birds or bats, and they can only run so fast on gangly, disproportionate feet. Changing shapes is no longer as easy as it was when they were ten, but they aren’t anywhere near to settling yet; Everyone’s a mess, including the dæmons.

Just a few more of my random imaginings! Hope you enjoyed!

Meta/Document Fic: Daemons and settling

(I don’t know, guys. This thing just happened and demanded to be written. Excerpt from a college student’s sociology paper on daemon settlement.)

(Un)settled: An analysis of atypical patterns of daemon morphic fluidity

The ‘standard’ pattern of morphic fluidity in daemons is a bell curve[1], punctuated by the long tail of settled adulthood. The brief window of infant stability, transitioning to the rapid-fire shifts of childhood peaking around age ten, before slowly dropping to a stable set of preferred shapes and ending with settlement into a final adult form by the point of legal adulthood.

There is no public conception of non-traditional settlement except as a stigma, a moral failing. Non-traditional settlement is pathologized, treated as a sign of mental illness at best, moral depravity at worst. [2] This refusal to teach or consider other settlement patterns leaves many of the most vulnerable members of society out in the cold.

In this essay, I will discuss the most common alternate settlement patterns: delayed settlement, precocious settlement, two-stage settlement, long-phase polymorphic settlement, short-phase polymorphic settlement, traumatic resettlement, and traumatic unsettling.

Delayed and precocious settlement are both recognized medical conditions, akin to disorders related to puberty and development. [3] Two-stage settlement, polymorphic settlement, and trauma-based settlement patterns meanwhile fall under the umbrella of psychiatric disorders. [4]

Delayed settlement is defined medically as any daemon settlement after the age of sixteen, but is not considered ‘serious’ unless a daemon remains unsettled past the age of majority. The oldest recorded settling was Bazhenov Vyacheslav|Emiliya at 39 years old. [5]

Precocious settlement, on the opposite end of the spectrum, is daemon settlement before age thirteen.[6] Precocious settlement is most diagnosed in boys, despite studies [7] which suggest girls are three times as likely to settle precociously than boys are. The youngest recorded settlement was Faraji Shabani|Jahaira at five years old. [8]

Two-stage settlement, also known as ‘false settling’, is defined by the DSM-5 as ‘periods of involuntary quasi-settlement, where a daemon is morphically stable for a minimum of six months’.[9] The DSM-5 definition is not without controversy – proponents of neuro-morphic theory argue that ‘quasi-settlement,’ by definition, is only applicable to daemons who retain metamorphic ability. 10]

Long-phase and short-phase polymorphic settlement are marked by limited retention of metamorphic ability. Polymorphic daemons have a set range of forms – as few as two, or as many as twenty [11] have been recorded. In contrast to unsettled daemons, polymorphs often describe their shifts as involuntary or situation-based. (e.g. a polymorph is always a yorkshire terrier at home, but shifts to a husky while at work.) [12] The division between long and short phase polymorphs is largely artificial, useful more for describing the entire population than any one individual. A polymorph who shifts more than once a month is considered a short-phase, one who shifts less often is a long-phase. [13]

Traumatic resettlement and unsettlement were, until recently, treated only as symptoms of PTSD. [14] The DSM-5 reclassified them as trauma disorders in its own right, [15] which has drawn disapproval from multiple groups.[16]…

God I fucking HATE Reginald Hargreeves because the Sparrow Academy is literally the biggest example of his own ego and abusive habits possible. His children travel back to before he adopts them and openly tell him he was a poor father, one of them literally shows him the physical deformities he left him with, they make it very clear that they are fucked up because of their childhoods and you know what he takes away from that experience? That it was their fault. It wasn’t his choices as a parent or his actions that caused a fucking apocalypse, but that his children just weren’t ‘strong enough’ to handle his abuse. That’s why he chose new people for the Sparrow Academy - because he believes the Umbrella Academy must have just been terrible people, not that he’s at fault for being an abusive father.
