Your boss said he understood, but that the offer would remain open for a few weeks at least – and he urged her to think about it before making a final decision.  You assumed at that moment that she would say that her decision was already final, but instead she told your boss that – yes – she would take a few days to think more about it. And then the two of you left the party.

You and your wife didn’t speak at all about what your boss had said for two days. But then, at dinner three days later, she raised the topic – asking you how you would feel if she agreed to be his girlfriend.  You said that you weren’t sure how you would feel, but that what was most important was what SHE wanted to do. You said that while thinking that deep down she would not want to do it – but you were wrong. She smiled at what you had said, and then told you that your boss had actually contacted her that afternoon, and that one of the things he told her was that she should ask you how you would feel, and that he predicted that if she asked that, then instead of you telling her you absolutely would forbid her from dating him, and you would not under any conditions get a vasectomy, that you would simply tell her that the decision was up to her – and that if that was indeed what you said, then it would mean that deep down you were accepting that he was a better man than you and that she deserved to be able to have a relationship with a real man like him.

Then, as you looked at her, your wife said that she’d made a decision. She said was going to start dating him and that she had already made an appointment for you to have a vasectomy the next day.
