You know what I think is really cool about language (English in this case)? It’s the way you can express “I don’t know” without opening your mouth. All you have to do is hum a low note, a high note, then another lower note. The same goes for yes and no. Does anyone know what this is called?

A more emotionally powerful song plays over the Escher room scene. “‘Within You’ is my favorite track,” Bowie revealed. “I had to write something that sounded like stone walls and crumbling power. The overall effect, with Jim’s visuals, is, I think, very tragic and slightly disturbing.” The lyrics suggest that Sarah is far stronger than Jareth anticipated – and it’s really beginning to vex him: “How you turned my world, you precious thing / You starve and near exhaust me / Everything I’ve done, I’ve done for you / I move the stars for no one.”
The mournful repeated line at the end, “I can’t live within you,” suggests that Jareth acknowledges that he’s the byproduct of her childish imagination, which she’s on the verge of leaving behind. It’s his power over her, real or not, that’s crumbling.
It’s also Bowie’s favorite scene in the film, “It’s so sad, I think, because Sarah really likes Jareth,” he said, “but she must get her baby brother Toby back safely. So she has to reject all Jareth’s pleas for companionship in his lonely world. Jennifer Connelly’s performance in this sequence is particularly good.”
