the way suzanne saw people romantically shipping haymitch and maysilee for years and said i’ll give you something even better. that’s actually his mean girl sister that he loathed for years and then grew to love like family! easily one of the best dynamics in the series
One thing I love about sotr is how much Haymitch and Maysilee matched each others capitol hating freak. Them deciding to paint their own posters, deciding to be loose canons and as wild as their horses, deciding to be rebellious victors, and not allowing themselves to be treated like animals
Maysilee said "jump", and Haymitch said "how high?"
MELONS
have you ever seen the english subtitles for a chinese bootleg of harry potter and the chamber of secrets?
because
they’re
great
going insane about haymitch the rebellion’s sacrificial lamb. they saw a kid honor the dead and make a mockery of snow in a public setting and knew he’d earned himself a death sentence. so they recruit him. ask him to do something that will only increase the target on his back. maybe it’s heartless but it’s for the greater good. they can achieve their aims of rebellion and let him make his death mean something in the process. it’s the best they can make of an unbearable situation
but then it doesn’t work. the arena doesn’t break and haymitch doesn’t die and the world and the games go on. and the personal consequences are dire.
fast forward twenty four years and now haymitch is the adult and he’s got the same kind of teenager on his hands and the same heartless choices in his lap. how much do you think it killed him to feed her to the same machine, when he knows intimately exactly how high the cost of failure can be?
songbird, mockingjay and dove
the way haymitch and katniss's father were friends. the way burdock held him from running into the fire. the way him and blair stayed at haymitch's victor's house. the way asterid gave haymitch sleep syrup. the way burdock and asterid were the last ones to keep contact with haymitch, trying to ease his grief. the way it took haymitch hurting asterid for them to leave him. the way burdock showed him lenore's grave, which he probably found long ago, instantly thinking of haymitch, but not telling him because he's not forgotten what he's done. the way haymitch saw how proud burdock was of katniss. the way his best friend died after haymitch himself pushed him away. the way he saw young katniss step into his role of providing for her family. the way haymitch had to take care of burdock's daughter. the way he saw himself, burdock, lenore and louella in her. the way he let her in his heart anyway. the way 'sweetheart' slipped out. the way through katniss, he's finally fulfilled his promise to lenore.
rounding out the gangsey with noah and henry!!

Me: *mentions favorite tv show*
Friend: “I’ve never seen that befo-“
Me:
Im rereading The Hunger Games because I apparently want to retraumatize myself after SOTR, and I got to Katniss and Gale selling strawberries to Madge.
I've seen people talk about the strawberries and how they relate to Maysilee because of the ice cream. But, the scene mentions Madge is wearing a white dress, the Mockingjay pin, and a pink ribbon in her hair.
Her mom, Merilee, wore a pink dress with matching ribbons on the day of her sister's reaping 💔 Maysilee's purple ribbons never made it home and Merilee lost her hummingbird pin, so Madge wears the things her mom and aunt had that no longer have their twin 😭
okay, so I've finished "sunrise on the reaping" and omg
this book kills me. even though I knew the ending, I didn't know how exactly it was going to end. now that's really devastating. haymitch really went through it all.
the book had a couple of slips here and there, but overall, it was good. i loved making connections to the rest of the series. i'm also really invested in this generation now. i'd love to read at least a short story about Katniss's parents. i would also love to read a little bit of the og trilogy from haymitch's and peeta's perspective. the epilogue moved me.
