Picnic of hearts
Jason Newsted x Reader ☆ fluff, friends to lovers
The phone rang on a quiet friday night, and you couldn't help but smile as you heard Jason's voice on the other end, once you picked up. Ever since he moved in down the street two months ago, you had become good friends, spending countless hours hanging out at each other's house and attending concerts and parties together.
You enjoyed Jason's company but were unsure of your feelings towards him. Was it just friendship, or was there something deeper there? You had never been good at deciphering your own emotions, especially when it came to matters of the heart.
Little did you know, Jason had been harboring a crush on you for quite some time, only waiting for the perfect moment to tell you.
"Hey, I was wondering, if you maybe wanna hang out at the park this weekend? If you're free, that is." Jason suggested enthusiastically as he waited for an answer.
You mentally checked your schedule and nodded, even though he couldn't see you.
"Yea sure, how about tomorrow in the afternoon?" You replied casually as you twirled the telephone cord around your finger.
Hanging out at the park plus quality time with Jason sounded lovely. But beneath the surface, a small part of you wondered if this outing might be more than just a casual get-together.
"Cool, tomorrow is perfect. Does 2 p.m. sound good?" Jason said, already excited about the next day.
"Sounds great. I'll see you then." You confirmed before the conversation ended.
Jason smiled to himself, imagining the day ahead in anticipation and began planning his surprise picnic mentally plus the most difficult part of confessing to you.
You arrived at the location with your bike the next afternoon, pulling off your helmet and ran a hand through your flowing hair, trying to quickly fix it in the rearview mirror before making your way through the park.
The sun was shining brightly, casting a warm glow over the lush greenery of the place. You scanned the scenery, searching for Jason until you spotted his curly mob of hair.
You could see him moving around hectically in a quiet corner, in the shadows of a tree, squinting your eyes to see what he was doing. Making your way over, grass crunching softly under your shoes, a smile crept onto your face as you called his name.
Jason's eyes sparkled with eagerness as he turned to face you, a sheepish grin spreading across his face. He fidgeted slightly, tucking a stray lock of curly hair behind his ear, revealing a hint of nervousness that wasn't typical of his usual calm demeanor. "Hey Y/N, great to see you! How are you?"
Before you could respond, your gaze drifted past him to the colorful array of food laid out on a checkered blanket behind him. Your eyes widened in pleasant surprise. "Wait, is that a picnic?"
Jason chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly, a rosy tint covering his cheeks. "Well yea, I wanted to make it a surprise. I hope you like it, I spent all day arranging it for you."
"Wow, really? That's the cutest thing someone has ever done for me." You smiled brightly as you looked at Jason, blushing heavily.
"Come on, take a seat," he said, stepping aside and gesturing for you to approach the blanket with a slight awkwardness.
As you stepped closer and sunk down onto the soft fabric, the details of his surprise unfolded before you. There were mini sandwiches, cut into perfect triangles next to a vibrant array of fruits – strawberries, grapes, melon slices, all glistening in the sunlight.
A basket with a bouquet of flowers and a bottle of wine inside. Everything arranged with such care and thoughtfulness, that it felt like stepping into a scene from a movie.
"Jason, this is incredible." You breathed, your eyes twinkling as you took it all in.
“Do you really like it?” he asked, his voice a little softer than usual, almost hesitant as he took a seat beside you.
"I love it! It looks perfect. You thought of everything." You reached out and gently touched his arm with an unwavering smile.
He visibly relaxed at your words, a relieved smile spreading across his face. "Ok good. I um...I brought you some flowers."
"These are beautiful." You murmured, reaching out to gently touch the bouquet inside the basket.
"Just like you." Jason blurted out, then immediately winced, his cheeks turning crimson.
You turned to him, a playful smile dancing on your lips. "Did you really just say that?"
He avoided your eyes again, fiddling with the edge of the blanket. "Maybe. Look, I know it's cheesy but I wanted to do something special. For you."
You reached out and placed your hand over his. His fingers were warm and slightly trembling. "Jason, it's not cheesy at all. It's perfect. And it means a lot to me." You said softly.
His gaze met yours, and this time, there was no shyness, just a raw, vulnerable honesty. “Really?”
You squeezed his hand, your heart fluttering with a warmth that mirrored the spring day. “Really, really.”
He smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that lit up his whole face, chasing away the nervousness from before. He picked up a sandwich, offering it to you. "So, mini sandwiches? Yes or no?"
"Definitely yes." You replied, taking the sandwich and biting into it.
After his surprise turned out to be a success, you eat and enjoyed some wine, and chat, the conversation flowing easily between you. He shared stories about his morning spent preparing everything, laughing about his near-disaster with the sandwiches and how he almost forgot the flowers. You laughed with him, enjoying his company and the beautiful setting.
But as the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting long shadows over the park, you noticed a change in Jason’s demeanor. His laughter became a tad more nervous, his fingers fidgeting with the glass of wine in his hand.
You paused mid-sentence, sensing the shift. “Hey, is everything okay?” You asked, tilting your head slightly, a playful concern lining your voice.
He took a deep breath, the kind that seemed to pull the weight of the world in. “Actually, there’s something I wanted to talk to you about." He admitted, the hint of vulnerability in his voice.
“What is it?” You asked, your curiosity tinged with an anxious feeling in your stomach.
Jason sat up straighter, his gaze fixed on the ground for a moment, then he finally met your eyes. “I’ve been thinking...about us."
You held your breath, the sounds of the park fading into a soft hum as you wondered what he had got to say. "What do you mean about us?" You prompted gently, trying to keep your tone light despite the trepidation building inside you.
He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing visibly in his throat. "I don't know about you but I really like you and I think...I might have feelings for you." He admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "More than just friendship. I think about you all the time, wondering what could be if we were more than this."
The air seemed to vibrate with tension as you processed his confession. A whirlwind of emotions swirled within you, surprise, excitement, uncertainty, even fear. Your mind raced, trying to make sense of the unexpected revelation.
You sat there, frozen, as Jason's words hung in the air between you like a challenge. His confession had left you utterly speechless, the realization dawned on you that your feelings for Jason extended far beyond platonic friendship.
As the seconds ticked by, you struggled to find your voice, to articulate the complex mix of emotions coursing through your veins. Jason's vulnerable expression tugged at your heartstrings. He looked both hopeful and terrified, awaiting your response like a bird perched on a fragile branch, poised to take flight or plummet back down to earth.
"Jason, I... wow." You stuttered, laughter catching in your chest before dying away into an awkward silence. "I didn't see that coming."
He chuckled nervously, the sound music to your ears. "I know, me neither. It just sort of...happened." He explained, running a hand through his fluffed curls. "But here we are."
Before you could respond, you were drawn inexorably towards him, your hand reaching out to cup his cheek, fingers splayed against warm skin.
Your gaze focused on the tender curve of his lips, remembering countless moments when they've curled into a smile and eyes drinking in every feature etched onto his handsome face.
With a breathy sigh, you leaned in, drawn to Jason like a magnet. His eyes widened in surprise before they fluttered closed as your mouths met in a tender kiss. I was soft and sweet, filled with unspoken promises and desire.
The gentle press of lips against lips sent sparks dancing across your nerve endings. Your mouth moved against his in a slow, sensual dance and Jason's arms wrapped around your waist, pulling you closer as he returned the kiss with equal passion.
Lost in the haze of newfound romance, you didn't notice yourself shifting, until suddenly you found yourself climbed half onto his lap. The picnic basket teetered precariously nearby, threatening to spill its contents.
A startled gasp escaped you both as reality crashed back in. Jason's eyes flew open, meeting yours in a burst of mirth. Laughter bubbled up from your core, echoing his amusement. Together, you collapsed back onto the blanket in a fit of giggles, the wine sloshing ominously in its bottle.
"I'm sorry, but I think we can't be friends anymore." Jason unfolded in a mock seriousness.
"Oh no, that makes me so sad." You pouted playfully.
He reached up to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear, his fingertips grazing your cheek. "Yea, because I think I'd prefer to be more than just friends with someone who kisses me like that." Jason grinned, his voice dropping to a sultry murmur.
"Sounds like a good deal to me." You smiled and melted into his touch, leaning into him as he pulled you in for another searing kiss.
