that's it, that's the post
One biggest lies of zutara fandom is Blue Spirit and Painted Lady is similar, but the good part is when the real fans debunk that lie:
Just did my nails but inspired by my oc

Princess Yue of the Northern Water Tribe
Finally in the Northern Water Tribe at the end of Book 1! We meet the wonderful Princess Yue and shenanigans ensue. I wanted the Northern and Southern Water Tribes to have related yet distinct tastes in fashion. Yue is still wearing a fantasy combination of Inuit/Yakut/Mongolian clothing but with a little bit of Great Plains Indigenous Regalia. Oh and her very important hair reference to Chinese "fairy maidens" (It's a Tang* Dynasty hairstyle associated with minor deities).
(Reoccurring disclaimer for this art series: This is for fun, they are inspired by the show's costume designs and then extrapolated out with historical fashion or things I think will be fun to draw. These are not meant to be accurate, only inspired. I hope you like them!)

Who’s who in order from left to right: avatar yarri(my made up past avatar), my oc rosette, my oc Sirenia, my oc allison
@gloomybadger4life
More on my avatar story:
Yarri and tarmik 😚
So Yarri is my past avatar oc, (most of the story is still undecided.)
tarmik is from the northern water tribe and the son of one of the chiefs advisors. He is expected by his parents and the tribe to study and have discipline and to take over as chief advisor when his father is no longer in that position. He doesn’t care much for that position or studying or discipline except for when waterbending is concerned. he found out he was a water bender at 10 and began training at 14 with many other young benders in the tribe and also unknown to him the new avatar
Yarri was found to be the avatar at 14,(on accident) only nine months after receiving her airbending tattoos, and began waterbending training.
they met at training when they where paired to practice moving the water from one person to the next, while they practiced they chatted and laughed and immediately became friends. Thought Yarri wore a thick parka with a hood so he didn’t see her airbending tattoos and had no idea she was the avatar.
one day after training they snuck to out to the cliffs outside agna quela for whatever reason and where admiring the view of the water below when Tarmik slipped and fell off the icy cliffs, Yarri quickly caught him with airbending and brought him safely back on land, so that’s how he found out she was the avatar.
after Yarri mastered water bending she had to leave the north so there was a teary goodbye, years later shortly after Yarri had mastered the elements (they are 18 now) there was a lot of unrest in the earth kingdom, the king requested the avatar to help maintain control Yarri agreed but it was a huge task for an avatar only barely masters the elements. So she decided she would recruit a few friends to help her like avatars had done in the past, she asked her friend from the earth kingdom Gina and tarmik and Zairse (a non bender from ember island)
so that’s the story thus far for yarmik (the ship name)
The idea of these three being locked in a love triangle has always felt wrong to me and not just because of ship preferences. It’s because it breaks the actual structure of the story.
This wasn’t a romance plot. It was a myth. And Aang, Zuko, and Katara were the pillars that held it up.
He’s the bridge. The balance. The last of his people. He’s not just the "main character" he is the story’s thesis: Can the world be saved without repeating its violence?
His arc is political, generational, and symbolic. He breaks the cycle of inherited destruction. He’s not a romantic foil he’s the second heartbeat of the show, the one who shows that healing is possible even from the worst roots.
She isn’t just the “girl” of the group. She’s the narrator. The memory. The hope.
She opens the story: "My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days..."
She closes it beside Aang, witnessing peace finally begin.
She's not a prize or a sidekick. She's a perspective.
Aang carried the spirit world and legacy.
Zuko carried the legacy of power and shame.
Katara carried generational grief and renewal.
Romantic tension wasn’t what they were for. They were a trinity of transformation.
Trying to turn them into a triangle doesn't add drama it breaks the structure.
She was never about “choosing between two boys.”
She was about choosing how to carry pain and still be kind.
She was about fighting injustice without becoming hollow.
She was about leading without needing to be called a leader.
Romanticizing her dynamics with either of them as the “main” arc?
That shrinks her role, not deepens it.
Aang = The Spirit and The Bridge (Air, Peace, Legacy)
Zuko = The Mind and Legacy (Fire, Power, Redemption)
Katara = The Heart and The People (Water, Memory, Hope)
You don’t collapse a trinity into a triangle.
Because this story was never about romance.
It was about restoration.
Aang, Zuko, and Katara didn’t complete each other romantically.
They completed each other narratively.
They helped balance the world, not each other’s dating lives.
So no, a love triangle never made sense because it was never the point.
They were the story engine, not the romance drama.
And they deserved to stand on their own as the icons they are.
