It was the weekend and you were ready to unwind. Being single, depressingly so, you decided to head out to the many clubs on and around Atlantic Ave with the hope of finding at least one cute guy. Even just exchanging numbers would ease some of the need you had to socialise with the opposite sex, so that was your goal.
The first club you got to wasn’t quite to your taste, the music not a genre you would usually listen to. But, it was happy hour so you stayed for the cheap drinks and felt yourself begin to relax. You had just returned from the ladies room and found a handsome man occupying the stool beside the one you had claimed as your own and he smiled when you sat down beside him.
“Having a good night?” He asked with a polite smile on his face, a dark blond beard shaping his face perfectly. The bartender had your refill ready and placed it down in front of you as the man pulled out his wallet. “I’ll have another and I’ll get this gorgeous lady’s drink as well.”
“You don’t have to do that.” You said as he waved it off.
You didn’t want to give him the idea that you could be bought into a night between the sheets as so many men had assumed would be the case when they paid for your drinks. On the other hand, the man looked built for some damn good sex and you couldn’t deny the sweet reminder between your legs as you shifted on your perch.
“I want to.” He said as he swivelled around to face you. “I will admit, I do have an ulterior motive.”
“Of course you do.” You sighed under your breath.
“See, my friends were meant to meet me here but they’re running late and it would really ruin my image if I’m sat alone at the bar.” His serious image cracked into a smile that had you laughing before he held his hand out. “I’m Steve.”
“Y/n.”
His hands were, for lack of a better word, manly. They were large and engulfed yours, his palms calloused from years of manual labour with them and you watched his biceps flex beneath his tight shirt. If you would hazard a guess you assumed he was a builder given his strength and you were once again reminded of the deep ache in your core at the thought of him wielding a hammer.
“I haven’t seen you around before. You live near here?”
“Yeah, but I don’t get out much.” You said as he sipped from his bottle of beer. “My mom said I need to get out more or resign myself to adopting 40 cats.”
His beer threatened to come out his nose as he choked and spluttered on the laugh lodged in his throat. You felt terrible as you leapt forward and clapped him on the back a few times while he recovered.
“I’m sorry.” You apologised as he grabbed a napkin and dabbed his lips with a shake of his head.
“Don’t be.” He reassured you with a hand on yours. “I like the honesty. It’s refreshing.”
His eyes turned sad for a moment before whatever ghost had haunted him left and he realised he was still holding your hand. You didn’t mind at all as his cold hand warmed against your skin but he pulled away to wave at a couple of guys walking in.
“Did you want to come join us?” Steve asked as they approached the bar but you shook your head with a small smile.
“I’m going to head off but you have a good night.” You felt safe with Steve but you didn’t want to put yourself into a predicament by drinking with three very strong strangers. “But, um, if you wanted to grab another drink sometime when you don’t have other plans, I would be up for that.”
Steve’s eyes lit up as he nodded eagerly and grabbed another napkin. He wrote his number down quickly and placed the paper securely in your hand, closing your fist around it.
“I’m definitely up for that.” He promised. “And let me know that you got home safe, pretty woman like yourself shouldn’t be walking around alone. Actually, do you want me to walk you to a taxi?”
You smiled as he worried over you and placed a calming hand to his bulging bicep. “I’m fine, Steve. Relax with your friends and I promise I’ll text you when I get home.”
“Alright then, y/n. Have a good night.” He nodded, watching you retreat from the bar until his friends blocked your view.
The second you were out of sight you added his number to your phone in case you lost the napkin and smiled the entire way down the street. You were practically walking on sunshine when some pop music caught your fancy as you passed an open bar and you figured one more drink would go down well before you called it a night.
The bar was crowded with more people than you expected waiting to order and you were undecided on whether to stay and wait it out or just leave. The decision was made for you when the line almost biblically parted and you saw an empty stool illuminated by the laser lights. Sneaking through the space, you took a seat while waiting for the bartender to make his way down the line.
“You might be waiting a while, doll. Service is pretty slack.” You looked over to the figure sitting beside you and found a handsome man smiling coyly at you as he ran a thick, ringed finger around the rim of his empty tumbler. “I was about to leave but I think I might just stick around now. I’m Bucky.”
For the second time tonight you found yourself bathing in the attention of a handsome man. His hand was cold from the icy glass he had been holding and he had held on just a little too long for it to be just a friendly handshake. “You got a name, or should I just keep calling you doll?”
“It’s y/n.” You said as the butterflies in your tummy took flight all over again. “But I could get used to doll too.”
“Good, because it suits you.” He winked before nodding your head to the bartender who had stopped in front of you. “You must be a good luck charm, they haven’t come down this end of the bar for the last 15 minutes.”
“I’m about 15 years overdue for some good luck, it’s about time things turned around.” You admitted with a laugh before ordering your drink and Bucky’s too so he didn’t have to wait. He was quicker than you to drop the money on the bar and he smirked as it was taken by the bartender before you could protest, the note large enough to buy four more of the cocktails.
“Keep the change man.” Bucky said to the bartender, a grateful smile thrown his way before the man rushed back to the next patron.
“That was very generous of you.” You smiled, remembering the days you had worked in hospitality.
“I appreciate an honest day's work.” He shrugged nonchalantly. “You couldn’t pay me enough to do what they do.”
You followed his glare to a group of young men, who looked barely legal, surrounding a hostess that was trying to work but they kept blocking her way. You sighed feeling sorry for the woman, she clearly wasn’t interested in them but it didn’t seem to be stopping them from trying.
“Why isn’t anybody doing anything?” You frowned as you looked for the bouncer before Bucky jumped off his stool.
You couldn’t tell how tall he was when he was sitting but he was half a head above most of the patrons as he sauntered towards the group of offenders. You grabbed your drinks, not wanting them to be spiked if you left them but also not wanting Bucky to get in trouble alone. You struggled to keep up with his long strides but focused on his broad back straining against the fitted shirt he wore before shamelessly trailing down to his tight jeans.
“Hey, leave her alone, she’s just trying to do her job.” Bucky growled as he pushed his way between two of them and put himself between her and the men. “I think you should find some other place to party tonight.”
You sagged with relief when you spotted two bouncers making their way into the tense situation but the relief was short lived as they pointed to everyone in the vicinity and ordered them out, including Bucky.
“He was just trying to help her.” You said as you stepped into the conversation and pointed at Bucky. “Since you guys didn’t seem to be doing anything.”
The bouncer towering over you cocked an eyebrow at the taunt before waving a hand at everyone, including you this time, and jabbed his thumb to the door. “Out. Now.”
An arm curled around your waist and Bucky’s drink was taken from your fingers and you found him finishing it before placing the empty glass on the hostess’s tray. “Sorry, doll, I didn’t mean to ruin your night.”
“Are you kidding me?” You laughed, following his actions and finishing your cocktail. “It’s nice to know there’s still decent guys out there.”
“I’m heading down the road to meet up with some friends, did you want to join me?”
You chewed your lip as you wanted to say yes but your feet were killing you and the buzz you had earlier had disappeared with the thought of the fight. “Can I take a raincheck? I was actually heading home when I walked past this bar.”
“Well, I’m glad you did.” He said as he stopped outside under the awning of the bar. “How about lunch this week? It might be less dramatic.”
“Less drama sounds good to me.” You chuckled and accepted his phone that he held out, adding your number to his contacts and sending yourself a message. “Let me know what day works for you.”
He grinned as he took the device and felt it buzz with a notification. “I’d make any day work for you, doll. I, um, have to go before these guys send a search party for me. I’ll see you next week.”
“It’s a date.”
His smile grew even wider as he walked away, a little bounce in his step as he replied to Steve that he was on his way.
“I don’t know what to do.” You complained to your mom as she sipped her coffee and pondered what advice she could offer.
“Sorry, sweetpea, I really don’t know what to say other than to trust your gut.”
“But they are both so amazing, and funny, and nice.” You huffed in frustration. “I really like both of them. Steve is honestly the most caring and considerate guy. And Bucky, he’s selfless and sweet. And they are both drop dead gorgeous and mechanics too, so you know they are good with their hands.”
“You’ve got yourself in a little pickle then don’t you sweetheart.” You mom said as she patted your hand gently. “But you can’t keep stringing them both along, that’s not fair on anyone. You’ll have to choose soon, before it gets too serious.”
“Ughhh, this isn’t helping mom. I have so much on my plate right now. Tomorrow I have breakfast with Steve then dinner with Bucky, then I have this project due and on top of that the light in my car still hasn’t gone away.”
“Honey, it needs a service, you can’t just drive around with the engine check light on for months.” Your mother tutted. “There’s a place on 3rd Ave near South Slope, the girls I play bridge with rave about it. Brooklyn something, Boys? I don’t know, use that interweb thing to search for it.”
You nodded along, half checked out of the conversation as your mind wandered back to your dating predicament. You knew everything your mom had said made sense but the thought of having to choose one over the other left you feeling sick to your stomach.
“One less thing to worry about.”
You looked up from the cold coffee you had been staring out of focus at, a stain ringing around the mug. “What’s that?”
“Talking to myself again.” She sighed as she showed you her phone. “I found them, The Brooklyn Boys, and booked you in. It’s amazing all the things you can do on the line.”
“Online.” You muttered as you took her phone and sent yourself the booking details so you could drop it off. “Thanks mom.”
“That’s what I’m here for. Glorified receptionist.” She teased. “One step up from being your maid when you lived at home. I should get going if I want to make it home before dark, my eyesight isn’t quite what it used to be.”
“Let me walk you out, I could do with some fresh air to clear my head.” You said as you placed the mugs in the sink and grabbed a jacket.
“Let me know which one you choose, oh and send me photos.”
The ache in your stomach came back at the reminder and you nodded sullenly as you followed her out of your apartment.
The ache in your stomach came back at the reminder and you nodded sullenly as you followed her out of your apartment.
Your breakfast and dinner dates went so well that you were even more confused and hurt at the thought of having to choose one. You had resorted to leaving their messages on read as they tried to organise another date and that left you feeling even worse because you missed talking with them. You could still feel the tingle of their kiss lingering on your lips and it felt natural to want to take things further, to establish a relationship and see where it led. But you selfishly wanted a relationship with both men.
You were so deep in your thoughts you almost missed the sign for the automotive shop but pulled into the last parking spot on the lot.
“How’d your dinner go?” Steve asked as he wiped his hands on a rag and turned to see Bucky’s feet poking out from under a Civic.
“I thought it went well but I think she’s ghosting me.” Bucky sighed as he rolled out and dropped his wrench into a toolbox with a little more force than necessary. “I don’t know what I did wrong.”
Steve chuffed and wrapped the rag tightly around his fist. “We can’t seem to catch a break can we?”
“You too, shit.” Bucky shook his head. “I’m sorry man.”
“Me too.” Steve muttered, hearing the buzz of a customer entering the workshop. “Plenty more fish in the sea, right?”
“Yeah, I guess.” Bucky was unconvinced but shrugged it off as he followed Steve to the counter so he could call the car's owner and give them the bad news. “I just thought we really had a connection.”
You looked up from your phone after getting the booking number and almost dropped the device as you came face to face with Steve and Bucky, both looking as stunned as you. Your lips parted like a guppy gasping for air which suddenly seemed too thick to inhale as your worst nightmare came to life.
“Hey doll.” Bucky recovered first and smiled as he stepped closer. “You had me worried when you didn’t call me back.”
“Doll?” Steve laughed nervously. “She’s your doll?”
“Steve…” You choked as you looked between them.
“Wait, you know Steve?” Bucky frowned and looked at his best friend looking at you. “This is the girl from the bar?”
“Oh sweet jesus, I should have adopted a fucking cat.” You groaned as you backed up to the door.
Steve shook his head with a relieved laugh that froze you before you could push the door open. “We should talk in our office.”
Your eyes flickered between the two of them, half expecting the testosterone to turn explosive. “You’re not…angry?”
“What?” Bucky’s frown deepened into a scowl. “Why would we be angry?”
“Because you and I.” You waved your arms around the triangle. “And me and him.”
“Sweetheart, relax.” Steve soothed, nodding to the door that said OFFICE. “I can’t speak for Bucky but I’m just relieved you're okay. When you stopped replying, I…I’m just glad you’re okay.”
Bucky placed his hand on your lower back and urged you to follow Steve as he unlocked the office door. Twin desks faced opposite walls and a couch sat against the back wall, the whole room looking really tidy considering it was two mechanics who used it.
“Have a seat, doll.”
You sat nervously on the middle seat, feeling their heat radiating from them as they sat down beside you. The bulk of their bodies should have overwhelmed you, made you feel small, but instead you felt comfortable. It was the same comfort that you had when you were with them individually.
Bucky sat back and draped his arm across your shoulder like did when he walked with you through the park after your first date. You looked at Steve from under your lashes and found no jealousy or restraint anger as he reached for your hand and laced his fingers with yours. After a few deep breaths, you finally regulated your breathing and asked the question burning in your brain.
“What is going on?”
“Showing you that it’s okay.” Bucky said casually as if he were commenting on the weather.
“I’m so confused.” You mumbled under your breath. “I just needed a service.”
“You got more than that.” Steve chuckled with a reassuring squeeze of his hand. “Now feel free to stop me at any point but I think it’s fair to assume you like the both of us.”
You nodded as you closed your eyes, feeling the pressure of societal norms weighing on your shoulders.
“And from what Bucky’s said, and what I know, I can tell you the feeling is mutual.” Steve affirmed.
“We aren’t asking you to choose, if that’s something that’s worrying you.” Bucky added. “Steve’s my best friend, he’s a great guy so I get why you went out with him.”
“And Bucky is the most supportive partner you could ever have.” Steve smiled proudly over your shoulder. “So the question is, what do you want to do now?”
Your head was spinning at the onslaught of information that your brain couldn’t seem to comprehend. On one hand you really hoped you were understanding what was going on but you didn’t want to risk making another mistake with the two of them. Sitting up straighter you cleared your throat and bit your lip as you worked up your courage. “What exactly are you saying?”
Bucky took your other hand and leant in so he could give you the kiss he had been dying to since he saw you in the shop. You melted as his tongue rolled across your lip begging entrance that you indulged in before he pulled away breathless. “Don’t choose between us.”
Steve cradled your cheek in his hand and turned you to face him. His kind eyes sent your heart racing as they broke away from your gaze to look at your swollen lips before he couldn’t resist having his own taste of them. Their hands on your body, the taste of their kids, it was too much and your brain could barely function when he pulled away. “Choose both of us.”
Your head was nodding with all your thoughts of consideration and deliberation gone with the wind. It felt right, feeling their hands in yours, their heated stares setting your blood on fire. Even if you had time to think you knew you still wouldn’t be able to choose because they were both what you needed, two sides of the same coin that you could never flip.
“I want you both.” You admitted as you shifted in your seat. “But I don’t want this to affect your friendship.”
“It won’t.” Bucky assured you as he looked at Steve. “Promise.”
Steve nodded and slapped Bucky affectionately on his shoulder. “Promise.”
“Oh god.” You gasped as you clamped a hand over your mouth. “How am I going to explain this to my mom?”
“Tomorrow,” you said. “I still need to go over the invitation list.”

“Guys, we’ve got a problem.” Bruce was pacing in front of his laboratory screens as he called over the comms to the team. “Y/n’s been hurt, we need to locate her and get her extracted.”
You frowned as you heard your name and you looked over at Sam who was just as confused. The fight had barely even worked up a sweat before you had beaten them back with the help of Sam. The two of you had then focused on getting the civilians to safety while Bucky and the rest of the team were rounding the bad guys up.
“Are you hurt?” He asked as ran his hands over your suit.
“I’m fine.” You reassured him before hitting your comms button. “I’m fine, Dr Banner.”
“Are you sure? I’ve rechecked your suit and the readings are still showing you’re in a lot of pain.” You could see Sam’s worry increasing and turned to find Bucky had sprinted over from where he had been separated from you, concern etching deep lines in his forehead. “I don’t even know how you are still on your feet in all honesty. I’ve seen heart attacks cause smaller readings than this.”
Bucky copied Sam and felt over the new suit that held more technology than was necessary, but came away with nothing. There wasn’t even any winces as he squeezed the normal culprits like bruised and broken ribs. Pressing his comms, your boyfriend’s gruff voice filled everyone’s earpieces, “Banner, you’re giving me a heart attack. She’s perfec- what was that?”
Your hand came to rest on your abdomen and you took a deep breath as you tried to stop another grimace at the pain. “It’s fine, let’s just go.”
“Stop lying.” Sam frowned as he saw your eyebrows pinch together in pain. “Doc, you’re right.”
“I’m sending medics now.”
“Just stop!” You shouted at the three of them and their overprotectiveness. “It’s just fucking period cramps for Christ’s sake.”
“Banner, didn’t you say her readings were bigger than a heart attack?” Bucky asked after he sighed with relief at the news.
“They still are.”
“Does that mean a heart attack isn’t that bad?” Sam asked and you punched him on the arm.
“No, Sam, period cramps are just that bad.”
Bucky and Sam turned to you with a newfound respect and you scoffed before making your way back into the action.
“Fuck I love her but she should be resting at home.” Bucky complained to Sam not realising he hadn’t turned his mic off. “Why would she come if she was in pain?”
You looked back over your shoulder and reminded him. “Because that’s what heroes do. Now, stop gossiping and let’s finish this.”
They rushed to catch up with you as Bucky began listing off how he was going to take care of you when you got home. He covered everything from a heat pack and movie to shower sex before you clamped a hand over his mouth. “You’re still on comms.”

The drive home was quiet, aside from your quick breaths. You were curled up in the passenger seat, though you were slumped down a bit with tremors running through your nerves. Sure, you had close calls, but never that close.
Bucky drove both of you home, taking different roads just to make sure the two of you weren’t being followed. He kept glancing over to you every few minutes, quietly reminding you to breathe in deep and try to relax. You tried, you really tried. Little bits of glass from the windshield were beneath you and it was increasingly uncomfortable. Your car looked terrible. Bullet holes riddled the back and hit quite a bit in the trunk.
Once Bucky pulled up to your apartment, he got out as you slowly opened the door. There was slight ringing in your ears leftover from the guns. Walking to the back, Bucky opened the trunk and sighed. A bullet hit the milk, causing it to explode over everything.
“Head inside, I’ll bring these,” he said as you started to grab a few bags.
“Let me help,” your voice was barely a whisper, but he nodded gently. He didn’t want to fight with you. Sliding the rest of the bags onto his left arm with ease, he shut the trunk. Following you up, you made it to your door and unlocked it. Home.
Stepping into the kitchen, you set the bags down and brushed your hair behind your ear to get started putting everything away.
“Ow,” you gasped, pulling your hand away to find a bit of blood. “What the…”
Bucky set his bags down and furrowed his brow. Walking over, he took your chin gently and turned your head. A small stream of blood had begun from the top of your ear and down your neck. Because you were so lost in your thoughts and the wind from the open windows whipping your hair around, you didn’t feel the liquid. Not to mention the adrenaline being so high.
“C’mon,” Bucky said as he took your hand, leading you to the bathroom. Closing the lid to the toilet, he had you take a seat. “Any chance you can tie your hair back? Looks like you got nicked,” he said, handing you a hair tie he found while he searched your cabinet.
You took it and gently put your hair up. “There’s some gauze in the bottom shelf…and some neosporin,” you muttered. So you had been shot. It was small but the fear made it all too real now. You were being targeted and if Bucky hadn’t of been there, you would probably be dead.
Grabbing a washcloth and rinsing it in cold water, he sat down on the edge of the bathtub beside you. Gently he turned your head so he could see it better.
“I’m going to be as gentle as I can, okay?” He spoke, meeting your eyes. You glanced down to the washcloth in his hand, noticing the gloves were still on.
“You’re gonna ruin those,” you mumbled, looking back to him.
Bucky hesitated for a moment, trying to figure out if he should. Shaking his head, he leaned forward. “Just stay still.”
With the gloves on, Bucky started to clean out the wound. Just two inches over and your head would have been a blended shake on the steering wheel. Sure you were lucky, but would you really call this luck? He was gentle, but that didn’t stop the sting as he tried to clean the dried blood away. He even wiped it off from your neck, though there was no saving the collar of your tee.
Setting the washcloth down, he pulled off his right glove, the left hand holding the ointment. He dabbed a little bit on it, thankful the bullet only skimmed the outside. You would have a little scar but nothing too damaging. After, he was able to wrap a smaller bandaid over the shell of your ear to keep hair from getting inside.
You stayed quiet, though your facial reactions showed how much it did hurt. You’d much rather get new piercings five times over before ever doing that again.
Once he was done, Bucky checked your other ear and let his eyes gaze over your body. “Does anything else hurt?” He asked, pulling his hand away from your chin.
You shook your head. “I’m just…I’m okay,” you spoke, your hands fidgeting with each other. “Do you think this is how it’s going to be now? I have to watch over my shoulder everywhere I go? They know where I live. They know where I work. I don’t want to be shot at again,” you said, not able to hide the fear in your tone.
Bucky sighed. “That’s what I’m here for. That’s why I’m a guard dog,” he said, somewhat teasing about the name she gave him. “As long as I’m watching over you, they won’t be able to get close. I’ve been doing this for quite a while, even before I was brought into the mafia. It won’t always be this scary,” he tried to convince you, but it wasn’t that easy. You leaned forward and hid your face in your hands as Bucky frowned. “Listen, go lay down and try to relax. I’ll put everything away, okay?”
You nodded from behind your eyes. Bucky took it as a sign to leave and give you some space. Discarding the trash and tossing the washcloth in the hamper, he walked out and closed the door behind him.
It wasn’t two seconds later that he heard soft sobs. It broke Bucky’s heart. This wasn’t the life your mother wanted for you.
An hour later, after cleaning up and changing your clothes in your room, you emerged and walked out to the couch. Bucky sat in the chair, looking at his phone. You had heard him on a call about twenty minutes ago. Taking a seat, you curled up against the arm and wrapped the blanket around your legs. Your hair was pulled up higher into a bun and you looked comfortable. Well, as comfortable as you could be after a day like that.
“When do you work next?” Bucky asked as he broke the silence. You looked away from the television, away from Gordon Ramsey yelling at some cooks.
“Tomorrow night. I only get one day off a week,” you said softly. He could see how red your eyes were, a dead giveaway to your crying, but he didn’t say anything about it. “I would call in but we’re already understaffed as is,” you added. Work was going to be a lot harder knowing that people weren’t just outside taking surveillance photos anymore.
Bucky nodded quietly and looked back to the tv.
The rest of the night was fairly quiet, though you went back to your room and slept. The adrenaline wore off and your body decided to give in to the tired the shooting left you in. It had been a long, long time since you experienced any excitement like that.
You had one nightmare, one very scary nightmare involving the men who followed you in the store. Only Bucky wasn’t there with you. Running and running, the sound of bullets whizzing past your ears getting closer and closer. You woke up with heavy breaths and tears as the last bullet was hit in the back of your head.
Sleeping wasn’t an option now, you came to realize that. Laying back down in bed to catch your breath, you stared at the ceiling and wiped the tears from your eyes. Everytime you closed them, you saw the faces of the men, the glass on your seat, the guns.
Giving up, you left your room in just a pair of pajama shorts and a tee. It was about five am, a time you usually found yourself going to bed at. Perhaps you’d be able to get a quick nap in before work, but it was a long shot.
Leaving your room, you walked out to find Bucky standing shirtless in the kitchen, right in front of the coffee maker. He was pouring himself a cup but that’s not what held your attention.
Bucky’s left arm was black and gold, taking over the majority of his shoulder. It was hard to tell in the dim light of the kitchen bulb that needed to be replaced, but it looked as if there were scratches where the metal met the skin. He had a pair of dog tags around his neck, remnants of what he used to be.
Bucky turned around and nearly dropped his cup as he saw you. “Oh. Shit. Hey,” he muttered, running the back of his neck with his right hand. “I didn’t think you’d be up this early,” he said. Then he followed your eye line to his arm and he sighed. Setting the mug down, he started to walk towards you to get to his room.
“Wait,” you spoke, gently holding a hand up. “It’s okay. I just…I’ve never seen something like that. Is that…why you had to leave the army?” You asked, though you weren’t sure if it was okay to even mention it.
Bucky stopped in his tracks and sighed. Nodding, he held his palm up and made a fist before letting it loose. “I was trying to save one of my men and a bomb went off too close. He made it out but my arm didn’t,” he muttered. “I don’t show it because I know it makes people uncomfortable. Prosthetics always do. When I sleep, it’s the only time I can be free from those damn gloves and long sleeves.”
You stepped closer, though you didn’t touch. “I’m pretty sure you’re past prosthetics. This is basically a robot attached to you. It’s so advanced. How did you find something like this?” You asked, seeing how the plates shifted slightly as the arm moved.
“Your father has a few friends. It’s linked to my nerves and bones. I even get phantom itches in it,” Bucky watched your face, ready for any sign of disgust. He had been wearing long sleeves and gloves for years now, only ever taking them off when he had to torture someone for his boss. But he saw no disgust, only intrigue. “You can…touch it, if you want.”
You bit your lip and glanced up to his eyes for a second before looking back down. Softly your fingers came up and brushed along the forearm, tracing the gold lining in the middle of the black plates. They slid up to his hand, gently bending his fingers towards his palm before letting them free. Your other hand rested beneath it to hold it up.
“This is…really, really cool, Bucky,” you spoke, flipping his hand over to see the other side. “You shouldn’t hide it. It’s not something to be ashamed of, you know. But…” you let his hand down and looked up to him. “If it helps, you don’t have to hide it in here, okay? If you want to wear the gloves and long sleeves out there, then that’s okay. But I won’t judge it,” you gave him a soft nod.
Bucky stood there for a few seconds before giving a slight nod. He really didn’t expect anyone to think it was cool. He did at first, until he noticed others staring. And in a job like his, he couldn’t afford to stand out.
You walked around him and headed towards the coffee, really needing it now. Bucky turned and watched you walk, amazed by your open mindedness. Two days ago you didn’t want him around and now you were fine with him showing the most hated piece of himself.
You were really something else.
“So…why are you up so early?” Bucky cleared his throat and walked back over to grab his coffee that was starting to cool.
You frowned, though your back was to him, as you poured yourself a cup. “Just…sore. My ear was in pain,” you lied. It was only partially a lie. It ached, but so did your chest from crying and the stress.
“So it has nothing to do with the crying I heard twenty minutes ago?” He raised an eyebrow.
Your shoulders dropped and a sigh left your lips. “I…had a nightmare. Those guys kept shooting and it kept getting closer. Now I can’t even enjoy my favorite pastime of sleeping in,” you groaned as you took a sip of coffee and turned around. “If you heard me crying, why didn’t you come in?”
Bucky leaned against the counter and watched you. “The same reason I didn’t go back into the bathroom after I bandaged you up and heard you crying. Felt you didn’t want me around as a reminder and that you needed space. Plus if you were in real danger, I’m sure you would scream first,” he shrugged.
You leaned back against the counter and huffed. “I’m just…not used to this. The shooting and the near death experiences,” you stared at the coffee in your hands. “It’s not you, it’s the life. The mafia. I always felt different growing up because I always had to be watched. My mom knew I hated it. My dad didn’t care. I lost friends because of this. I can’t go hang out or have sleepovers. Birthday parties were just for my immediate family. Hell, I’m still mad he didn’t take me to Disneyland like he said he would when I was eleven,” you muttered which made Bucky smile slightly.
“You can still go, you know,” Bucky took a sip and you rolled your eyes.
“It’s no fun alone and I don’t think Miss Liz is up for it,” you shrugged. It was apparent you didn’t have friends outside of work.
Bucky was quiet for a few minutes, the only sound being the rain droplets hitting the window. As if your car didn’t deal with enough, now your seats would be soaked.
“After all of this is over, why don’t I take you to Disneyland?” Bucky asked, making you pause as you brought the cup to your lips.
“What?”
“You heard me. Why don’t I go with you? After all, I’m considering us friends since no one else has taken so kindly to my arm,” Bucky tilted his head.
You rolled your eyes, but the sincere look on his face told you he wasn’t joking. “Yeah…sure. But I’m not holding my breath. There is no after this is over in the mafia. There’s brief periods of quiet but it always gets bad again,” you frowned, finishing off your coffee.
Bucky knew you were right, but he had a bit of a plan. At least to make sure you had the chance to find your after in the mafia life.
“Fair enough,” Bucky nodded as you set your cup in the sink.
“I’m gonna try to go lay down again. If um…if you hear me crying again, just come wake me up, please,” you said softly, the end sounding like a whispered plea to save you from what may come from your mind.
“Okay,” Bucky gave another nod and watched as you walked back to bed.
You couldn’t find it in yourself to fall asleep again.

🌵 – Tommy's younger sister accompanies him to London and finds Ollie cute ? 🤣🤣 You don't have to do that of course haha just some random idea and omg I've never requested a shelby sister before!!
smallheathgangster's 1.6k celebration (finished)
this is my last celebration ask! thanks to everyone who participated! it was so much fun, especially this last drabble! thanks lily!! 💛
Tommy had already promised you around a hundred times, that he’d take you to a business meeting, since you’d wished for it on your eighteenth birthday. Of course, Tommy did not hold his word and he never let you accompany him, always making up an excuse about it being too dangerous, not the right type of meeting or too far away from Small Heath.
It’s been more than two years now and you decided, you would make your wish come true on my own. You had heard your brother mentioning to Polly, that he’d be driving to Camden Town the next day to have a conversation with Alfie Solomons. And because you already expected him to say no if you asked him to come along, you did what any other grown-up, very mature twenty-one-year-old would do. On the morning of Tommy’s departure, you climbed into the back seat of his car, just a few minutes earlier, hiding, so he would not spot you when getting into the vehicle himself.
You knew, you had to wait for him to be too far away from Birmingham, or else he would turn around and bring you back. So, you stayed hidden in the foot space behind the two front seats, until you could see the high-rise buildings of London through the car window. Then, you quickly popped up, looking directly at Tommy through the rear-view mirror.
“Fuck!”
The car swerved, nearly hitting another driving in the opposite direction.
“Woah, watch out,” you said, obviously trying to act as annoying as possible.
Tommy was not amused.
Tommy was not amused at all by your presence. And especially not by the way you had surprised him.
“Bloody hell, what is wrong with you?!”
You shrugged. “Do you remember my birthday wish?”
Tommy frowned angrily. “I told you, I’d take you with me at some point!”
“It’s been two years, Tom,” you remarked reproachfully.
You watched him grit his teeth. Hard.
The rest of the journey he ignored you, until he arrived at his destination. “You’re staying in the car.”
“No, I want to–”
“I said, you’re staying in the car. I don’t want to have you in the same room as Solomons, eh?,” he repeated, raising his eyebrows as he spoke.
You swallowed heavily. Angered by your brother’s behaviour.
Fine, hiding in the back seat of his car to scare him to death hadn’t been very smart. But, what options were left, anyway?
Still, you believed it would be best to listen to Tommy and stay in the automobile, until he was finished.
While time passed, you stared out of the window, observing the large back-alley door, behind which your brother had disappeared. Suddenly, it opened again. A handsome man with dark, curly hair stepped out onto the street. He pulled a cigarette from his pocket and lit it with a match.
You couldn’t stop looking at the stranger. You noticed him wearing a kippah, confirming that he must be one of Alfie’s men. You knew Tommy would not be happy with you for eyeing him, but he was just so pretty.
Then, he finally looked up, giving you a perfect view of his blue eyes. You adored blue eyes, perhaps because it ran in your family and knowing how rare they were.
He spotted you sitting in the car, sending you a kind smile. You smiled back and shyly waved at him. Just when you thought he was about to approach you, the large door opened once again and, unfortunately, your brother stepped out.
He brushed past the gorgeous Jew and jumped back into the car.
“Who’s that?” you immediately asked.
“Hm?”
“The one with the curly hair,” you explained. “Who is he?”
Tommy’s eyes moved to the man leaning against the dusty wall. “Ollie. Alfie’s assistant, if one likes to put it that way.”
“How old is he?”
“Why?” he questioned irritated.
You grinned and looked back at Ollie. “He’s cute.”
“Oh, for god’s sake, shut up,” Tommy exclaimed and started the motor, driving off as quickly as possible.
Again I’m spaming at this point but this is so good

You had always loved masquerades.
Picking a costume and a mask was almost as fun as the ball itself and now that your costume was here, you could hardly wait until the ball tonight.
When you woke up the next morning, the whole house was buzzing. The preparations were almost over, but of course there were always last minute changes and Aunt Lavinia had insisted on supervising everything with Cecily. Instead of sitting down to have breakfast, you just grabbed your plate and made your way to the ballroom, humming a tune to yourself. If your mother were here, she would have surely scolded you for carrying your plate around and not eating while sitting down, and yet, you were curious to see how the ballroom looked.
And as soon as you got there, you held your breath, stopping dead on your tracks.

“I’m not a fucking babysitter, Steve.”
You could hear the bitterness and hatred that filled Bucky’s voice even through the thick wall of Steve’s office. It didn’t come as a surprise since most people underestimated you but it didn’t mean it hurt any less. You thought being a part of the Avengers would be like one happy family but clearly that was not the case.
“I’m not asking you to be a babysitter.” Steve sighed. “She’s your partner, you back each other up, just like we used to.”
“That was different, I knew you.” Bucky argued.
“Then get to know her, Buck, she’s on your floor so you’re going to cross paths eventually.”
“Not if I can help it.”
The door was torn open and you heard the crunch of the handle breaking the drywall before Bucky filled the doorway, surprise crossing his face for a split second before it returned to scarcely controlled rage. You refused to move from where you stood and he had to turn sideways as he passed you or knock you down, the small decision giving you a slither of hope that he wasn’t always an asshole.
“Sorry you had to hear that.” Steve sighed as he saw you standing there. “And sorry for Bucky, he’s still adjusting to 21st century living.”
“Don’t apologise for other people.” You stated as you walked into his office and took a seat. “Any issue they have is on them.”
“As long as it doesn’t interfere with the mission.”
“It never has.” You reassured him but his eyebrow quirked up at the answer.
“This happen often?”
“With alpha males.” You nodded.
“How do you usually get past it?”
“Prove myself.”
He slid a manila folder across the table and you opened it to find a briefing. You scanned over the document and closed it back up. It was a simple extraction for a scientist who was defecting from a suspected Hydra operation. “When do we start?”
“He’s ready and waiting. I was about to head out but it looks like you and Bucky can handle it together.”
“I don’t need a babysitter.” You said to Bucky after sitting in silence for most of the flight. “I am quite capable of taking care of myself.”
“Yeah, we’ll see.” He muttered unconvinced as he cast his eyes over you. “At least they gave you an easy mission.”
You scoffed and turned back to the front of the jet, turning off autopilot so you had something to do other than listen to his bullshit. “We both know how much Hydra hates to lose their assets, if you think this will be easy then you need a psych assessment pal.”
“Don’t call me pal.” He growled as he unbuckled his belt and rose over you. “And, you don’t know shit about Hydra.”
He disappeared into the lower deck before you could reply and the scars on your chest began to itch at the reminder of what Hydra did to you. You had thought out of everyone at the compound that he would be the most accepting of you given his past but he clearly did not care.
“We are approaching the target.” You called out as you prepped the jet to land.
You could already see that there were more people than just the target in the building, the heat signatures registering on the screen Friday projected. Bucky had rejoined you and was leaning against your headrest as he counted the bodies and pointed to one on the right.
“You take that one and we will meet on the northside after I grab the package.” He said before turning away and filling the vest he wore with an array of knives. “If you can handle him.”
You rolled your eyes at his attitude and looked over the image again so you knew where everyone was and then the jet touched down silently with the reflective shields in place. You already had everything you needed on you so the moment the doors opened you took off towards the building. Bucky was shocked at your speed but he soon caught up, confusion and surprise on his face as you pushed ahead and kicked the door to the warehouse in.
“Keep up old man.” You fired at him before you spotted the first Hydra soldier.
You spun away as he fired his weapon and ducked behind a pillar until you heard the click of an empty chamber. You closed the distance as he tried to reload but he wasn’t quick enough, his screams choked off as you caught him by the throat and smashed him into the concrete floor. Another two soldiers rounded the corner and you picked up their fallen comrade to take the bullets aimed for you and you wondered briefly where Bucky had ended up.
A streak of metal flew past your face and for a second you thought he was aiming at you, your head whipping around to see Bucky throwing a second knife into the remaining soldier. Dropping the body, you growled as you saw his knives buried in their foreheads. “I had them.”
“Sure you did, doll.” He smirked before taking off further into the building. “Stay there.”
You laughed at the audacity and raced to catch up to him, the fight soon becoming a competition. You hit the jackpot when you reached what must have become the soldiers' mess hall as there were four sitting ducks for you to take care of. A bullet grazed your arm and you hissed at the sting before taking extra pleasure in ending him, your fingers crushing his throat until you felt the bones break.
The building was getting quieter, the less soldiers left alive, and you listened closely for the sounds of fighting and followed it to find Bucky. He was going hand to hand with three men but you saw a fourth entering from another door, gun raised for the shot. You didn’t even think, you ran across the room as the man looked down the scope and you heard the bang of the rifle before you felt the bullet hit your chest. Your body crashed back into Bucky and you groaned as pain radiated your chest as he caught you.
“What the fuck did you do that for?” He growled as he held you with one arm and pulled a gun from behind his back, disposing of the last two men.
“Who's the babysitter now?” You chuckled with a groan as blood began to seep over your fingers.
“Friday, I need a medevac.” Bucky ignored you as he spoke into the comms, laying you on the ground, tossing his vest aside and tearing his shirt open to use as a bandage.
“Don’t bother.” You said as you moved your hand for him to put pressure on the wound. “It won’t kill me.”
He looked at the tear in your skin where blood was oozing out, right over your heart. “You should be dead.”
“That would make your day wouldn’t it.” You snorted before whimpering in pain.
He winced at the agony in your tone and he felt guilty for being an asshole to you since you joined. He never liked working with women, not because he thought they couldn’t be agents but because at the end of the day he was raised in a time where men were the providers and protectors, it was something he still clung to.
“I don’t want you dead, y/n. I didn’t want you out here getting hurt.” He admitted as he held the material over your wound. “How?”
“You didn’t read my file did you.” He shook his head ruefully and you tapped your knuckles against your chest, hearing the hard thud of the metal that had been laid beneath your skin. “I was Hydra’s human shield, gold titanium alloy. You didn’t think you were the first to escape their control?”
The bleeding was already slowing down as the serum they had given you sped up the healing process and you brushed aside his hand so he could see the skin knitting itself back together. In a few days it would be a scar just the rest that littered your chest as you took the body shots meant for other people.
Bucky’s eyebrows were furrowed and deep lines set in his forehead as he saw just how many bullets you had taken, he felt terrible for being the reason another one marred your beautiful skin. He also knew that the shot would have certainly killed him, the calibre of the bullet more than the thin vest he wore could have stopped. Helping you to your feet, he wrapped his arm around your waist and took your weight. “Thanks, doll. I owe you one.”
“Anytime.” You said with a small smile, glad that the machismo had eased and something had shifted. “So do you trust me?”
He gave a small nod that sent your smile widening. “I’m not about to give you my bank account number but there’s not many people who would take a bullet for me.”
“Yeah, well, I wouldn’t recommend it. Just because it won’t kill me doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt like a bitch.” You chuckled and stopped as a man came out of hiding with a gun to the package's head.
“Don’t move or I will kill him.” The soldier threatened as he dug the gun further into the scientist's head until he cried out with pain. “Don’t fucking move.”
“Do you want the honours or can I?” You asked under your breath, knowing his enhanced hearing was superior to yours.
The question would have been surely cut down even five minutes ago but now you saw the corner of his lips tip up. “All yours, doll.”
Your fingers were already hanging at your side and it was simple to reach the handle of the kunai, sliding it out of its sheath before you flicked your wrist faster than he could see. The dagger hurtled through the air but before the man could react and pull the trigger, the knife sliced through his finger and wedged between the trigger and the gun so it couldn’t be squeezed.
“Any other surprises I should know about?” Bucky asked as you both walked over to the soldier still trying to shoot his gun.
You kicked it far from his reach and checked the scientist was physically alright before you winked at your partner. “You should’ve read the file, Barnes.”
“I’m sure there’s something that's not in it.” He countered, grabbing the soldier and using his own cuffs to restrain him to a pillar for the authorities to deal with. “Give me something.”
“Chocolate, roses and red wine.”
“Yeah?” He smirked to himself. “Okay.”
“What’s the basket for?” Steve asked as he stepped out onto your floor and saw it sitting in the middle of the kitchen island.
“I dunno, it was there when I woke up.” You shrugged as you continued to eat your breakfast and Steve wandered over to look at the tag hanging from the bow.
“It’s for you.” He said with a tight lipped smile and you frowned as you placed your bowl in the sink and took a look for yourself.
Sure enough, your name was written but it had no name under the sender so you tugged on the bow and let the wrapping fall away. You knew exactly who it was from when you found the inside of the basket full of boutique chocolates and a few small bottles of various red wines. Steve was completely thrown as he watched your smile grow as you picked up the card inside, I didn’t forget. The elevator opened again and you both turned to find Bucky stepping out, a huge bouquet of roses and the look of someone caught red handed.
“Steve, uh, what are you doing here?” Bucky froze, the doors starting to close on him before he jumped out of the way.
“I was looking for you, but I’ll come back later.” He said as he tried to hide his smile and walked past Bucky with a pat on the shoulder and whisper of encouragement.
“This is a 180 compared to yesterday morning.” You teased as you pulled out a chocolate and popped it in your mouth.
“I have a lot to apologise for.” He said as he held out the roses, the floral scent sweetening the room. “I was a bit of an asshole.”
“That’s a bit of an understatement.” You laughed as you took them from his hand, touching the soft petals with your nose. “But this is a very good start.”
He looked at your chest, the wound almost completely healed but bruising still spread across your skin. “How about dinner?”
“And a movie.” You bartered.
“It’s a date.”
