happy birthday dino

Exactly one year ago today, on dino's very birthday, I was dancing for my life on the national stage. I was across the country for dance team nationals with the hiphop team dino himself inspired me to join. Funny how the universe plays these things out. Do you know even beyonce herself used to have an alter ego so she could forget her nervous self and become that queen onstage? Well last year on dino's birthday was the most afraid I have ever been in my life. But it was also the proudest. I couldn't believe how far we'd come as a team and I as a dancer. When I stepped on stage for the first time, I was so afraid I wouldn't be sharp enough, charismatic enough, powerful enough. But as we took our places I envisioned myself as my biggest inspiration, the legend himself, right where I belonged between my incredible teammates. I can confidently say I gave it everything I had and it was far from perfect, but I know dino would be proud of me. Looking back on that day one year ago, it remains the hardest thing I've ever done. It really changed the way I see myself and imagine what I can do. I feel invincible, and it all leads back to one spark. So I wanted to honor the incredible dancer who pushed me to push myself and break my limits with a very special piece. So happy birthday lee chan, if only you knew the ways you've changed lives 🩵

Yep established in '07! Awake at 5am right now for the early-ass ACT wish me luck 😭 Really feeling the weight of the future at the moment. But thank you for your kind words, I'll continue with strength now!!

(People are surprised when I've improved so much by age 16 but when I've been doing art every day since I was like 5 then I just see that as a whopping 11-year career and then it seems less wild. Like medical school is only 8 years and you should hope they're plenty qualified after that! I've been busy. 😅)

Backstory time! Just what inspired this piece?

Art makes me really truly happy, especially when I'm making it, but like all artists, I have a not-perfectly-healthy relationship with it. Being a perfectionist, often my entire mood and self-worth can feel based off how well a current piece is going. I also have an intense need for production, and at the end of a day if I haven't created anything, I often feel yucky and useless (even if I had an awesome day).

So when we got an assignment for class to create conceptual self-portraits, this is straight where my mind went. It's a special kind of frustration since I'm the one inflicting it upon myself, and I wanted to show that feeling I get, so I photographed my own hands bearing down on myself while I paint the tears on my own face in a prison-stripe kind of outfit. I'm trying to have a freer relationship with my art these days but I think this feeling will stick around for life, so I'm trying my best to learn to acknowledge it and live with it.
