Due to the name "GIMP" being considered quite offensive in some dialects of english, which has been a renewed topic of debate among the wider FOSS community, we are proud to announce that across the next month or so the project will be rebranding!

From now on, GIMP will be known as FAG!

The name stands for "FOSS Art & Graphics"! As our project had no longer been associated with GNU at all for a long while now, we felt it was finally time to sign the divorce papers and get rid of their name tainting ours. However we still wanted to convey that FAG is and always will be Free and Open Source software. After a long session of brainstorming, spending days upon days looking for a name that conveys our values and project well, we finally ended at FAG. We're quite happy with it! What do you guys think? Let us know through comments and reblogs!

Learned a bit about lead-cooled fission reactors the other day. Apparently you can like. Brick a lead-cooled nuclear reactor. If your core cools down or you spring a leak to air, the lead can solidify and Sorry but your reactor is now a solid brick. Of lead. Lol

it wild to me that there are people out there who aren't interested in history

like wdym you don't think about the fact that women would tell stories as they made butter in the same way we listen to podcasts today? wdym you don't think about that one Chinese poet who wrote about how much he loved his cats hundreds of years ago? wdym you don't think about the fact that we found a gravesite of a young child surrounded by flowers from THOUSANDS of years ago? wdym you don't think about how people wrote "i was here" into the walls in Pompeii? wdym you don't think about the little egyptian boy who drew little doodles at the top of his school works more then a thousand years ago?

wdym you don't think about the fact that people, no matter the place, time, social status, are fundamentally no different from you. that they loved the same as you, enjoyed the same things you did, dreamed about a better life the same way you did. that despite how seemingly detached you are from these people, in time, place, and culture, the things you do and the thing u are, are so undeniably human that it transcends time and space

Penis Saudade would go crazy

I fully understand why "character A is astounded at the sight of character B's penis" is a specific kink that gets tagged for, but the fact that some platforms choose to tag this kink as "penis awe" is unintentionally very funny. Now I'm picturing penis experience kink tags for all those other allegedly transcendent emotions in the glossary of your Philosophy 101 textbook. Penis faith. Penis Weltschmerz. Penis apprehension of the absurd.

When I was in my teens, I used to make an entire magic system with 360+ unique spells, ordered in magic schools and categories, and it boggles my mind that I basically reinvented DnD mechanics, even down to metamagic.

I wanted to make a wiki about it but I don't have time for it.

When I Was In My Teens, I Used To Make An Entire Magic System With 360+ Unique Spells, Ordered In Magic

The point was to try to encompass every "superpower" I could think of into a magic system.

I even got lore related to it all, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna simply reuse it all for OC worldbuilding. Ngl the fun part was naming all the spells, symbols and coming up with the logic of it all.

Small fantasy worldbuilding elements you might want to think about:

A currency that isn’t gold-standard/having gold be as valuable as tin

A currency that runs entirely on a perishable resource, like cocoa beans

A clock that isn’t 24-hours

More or less than four seasons/seasons other than the ones we know

Fantastical weather patterns like irregular cloud formations, iridescent rain

Multiple moons/no moon

Planetary rings

A northern lights effect, but near the equator

Roads that aren’t brown or grey/black, like San Juan’s blue bricks

Jewelry beyond precious gems and metals

Marriage signifiers other than wedding bands

The husband taking the wife's name / newlyweds inventing a new surname upon marriage

No concept of virginity or bastardry

More than 2 genders/no concept of gender

Monotheism, but not creationism

Gods that don’t look like people

Domesticated pets that aren’t re-skinned dogs and cats

Some normalized supernatural element that has nothing to do with the plot

Magical communication that isn’t Fantasy Zoom

“Books” that aren’t bound or scrolls

A nonverbal means of communicating, like sign language

A race of people who are obligate carnivores/ vegetarians/ vegans/ pescatarians (not religious, biological imperative)

I’ve done about half of these myself in one WIP or another and a little detail here or there goes a long way in reminding the audience that this isn’t Kansas anymore.

I understand why a lot of fantasy settings with Ambiguously Catholic organised religions go the old "the Church officially forbids magic while practising it in secret in order to monopolise its power" route, but it's almost a shame because the reality of the situation was much funnier.

Like, yes, a lot of Catholic clergy during the Middle Ages did practice magic in secret, but they weren't keeping it secret as some sort of sinister top-down conspiracy to deny magic to the Common People: they were mostly keeping it secret from their own superiors. It wasn't one of those "well, it's okay when we do it" deals: the Church very much did not want its local priests doing wizard shit. We have official records of local priests being disciplined for getting caught doing wizard shit. And the preponderance of evidence is that most of them would take their lumps, promise to stop doing wizard shit, then go right back to doing wizard shit.

It turns out that if you give a bunch of dudes education, literacy, and a lot of time on their hands, some non-zero percentage of them are going to decide to be wizards, no matter how hard you try to stop them from being wizards.

The Ruins Of Lindy Boggs Medical Center (formerly Old Mercy Hospital) At Night, March 2024.

The ruins of Lindy Boggs Medical Center (formerly Old Mercy Hospital) at night, March 2024.

The hospital was in operation from the 1920s to 2005, when Hurricane Katrina flooded the lower floors and knocked out the generators, which were located in the basement. While details of the story are often conflated with oral history surrounding similar events which occurred uptown at Oschner Baptist Hospital, possibly as many as 45 patients at Lindy Boggs lost their lives due to heat, thirst, and a lack of critical medical services. The survivors were fortunately rescued by airlift, except for one man who stayed behind to look after the neighborhood pets who had taken refuge on the dry upper levels.

The hospital was abandoned soon after and is today a conspicuous ruin towering over Bayou St. John and the Mid-City neighborhood. A popular destination for urbex explorers and graffiti artists, the floors and walls of the basement and sub-basement are still damp with moisture from the storm twenty years ago.
