Land Back because the indigenous people and the land evolved together. The Americas (Turtle Island) was NEVER a “virgin”, unused, underutilized landscape. It has always, ALWAYS been cared for, listened to, learnt from by the people who live there. There were trade routes, homes, battlegrounds, grave yards, there were prescribed land fires that shaped the forests and plains. These are only a couple teeny tiny examples.

Land Back because indigenous knowledge is key to restoring ecosystems. And to help us adapt in better ways to the impending changes as our planet warms. If there is hope for our beautiful planet and every being in it (and there is) then it is with anti colonization, indigenous sovereignty and solidarity. The future is Indigenous....

What I would do

If I was exploring the old factory I'd suggest we split up to cover more ground. If I'd wriggled loose of my bonds and escaped the house I'd go back inside. If I had the hero right where I wanted him I'd take my eyes off him for a moment and reveal the full extent of my diabolical plan. If I found an abandoned starship, drifting alone through the depths of space, I'd board it to find out why. If the ocean was calm - too calm - I'd dangle my legs in the water. If I was guarding the prisoner I'd take her handcuffs off for a last cigarette.

If I was a bounty hunter tracking a mysterious and high value target I'd allow myself to get attached to them and renege on the deal with my employer. If I found a mysterious egg in an alien temple I'd grab it. I'd trust in the inherent goodness of a glowering malcontent. I'd grab a gun from the hand of my dead enemy and hand it to them. I wouldn't bother to look as I heard them cock it.

If the mafia hitman took me on a solo ride on his boat I'd wear a Hawaiian shirt. If I was lost in a dark pine wood I'd stay the night in the deserted cabin. I'd sneer at the old woman in the black robes who appeared mysteriously in town one day. I'd beat the cowed grey wolf with a stick. I'd cheat the enchanted minstrel out of his payment. If my house caught fire I'd frantically tug my chest of gold coins towards the door.

If I was walking home I'd take the route through the park. If I was a starry-eyed naif starting a new life in the big city I'd make a vicious enemy who tirelessly pursued me. If there was a point of no return I would cross it.

If I was building a space station I'd include a security flaw capable of sparking a chain reaction which would destroy the entire thing. I'd peer over the very edge of space. If I was being hunted by an almost supernaturally skilled alien hunter I'd stand up, grab the biggest gun I could find, and shout "this alien bastard just pissed me off." If I experienced trauma I'd refuse to address it until all hope of resolution was lost. If I got lost in the snow I'd lie down to rest for just a minute. I'd retrace my steps around in a circle. I’d try to light a fire with trembling hands.

If the T-Rex escaped I’d run to the toilet. I'd sell out my fellow prisoners for the warden's table scraps and expect him to protect me. If armed terrorists swarmed the office I’d dust off my $3800 Armani suit and tell them they had no right to do this. If my friends kept showing up dead I'd drive to the secluded lookout to make out with my girlfriend. I would push the reactor core past its limits. I would dismiss the scientists' concerns. I'd push them away from the control panel. I'd seize the dials and turn them all the way up, even if the instruments shook and the alarms began to ring. If someone tried to stop me I'd draw my pistol and fire a shot in the air. If there were rules of good sense or good practise I would flout them. If someone appealed to my conscience I would insult them. If there were warning signs I would ignore them.

I understand that not everyone is like me. But that's what I would do.

imagine how lonely humans must seem to Vulcans!!! to us they appear formal and distant but they all share bonds!! parental bonds, sibling bonds, marriage bonds, and the k'war'ma'khon— the metal linking of all Vulcans, the faint physic connection making them one people! they can share direct thoughts and feelings, no stilted and limited verbal translation to get in the way!! touch is so ritualised because it is such a massive show of trust, especially considering their history of violence and conflict! i can picture some Vulcan essay or commentary written on Terran studies: “It is impressive so many of them form such lasting relationships, given that they cannot fundamentally understand each other or share experiences. The loneliness is inconceivable; they touch and do not know each other.”

Ableism in the Body Positivity Movement and why you should avoid doing and spreading it.

I want to start this off by saying that i am all for body positivity, it’s personally helped me when ive been in non-ableist spaces. This post is not  trying to say that it’s a bad thing overall. The idea and message is good, but the execution doesn’t always live up to that.

Ableism is surprisingly prominent in the movement, despite the name. It shows up in different yet very similar ways.

The biggest thing is the focus on health. I constantly see people saying being fat is okay because you can be healthy and fat at the same time. This is true of course, you can be both. but why does health matter? Why does health determine respect. Why does health determine whether or not you’re valid?

I am not healthy. I never will be healthy. I am automatically unhealthy due to my disability. Putting focus on health creates two categories of valid and invalid. And the people who make up the majority of the invalid box are disabled.

Not to mention that some fat people are completely abled and still unhealthy. And those people are completely deserving of the same respect anyone else gets.

Another thing is food. People are constantly talking about how they eat the healthiest things and are still fat. Which is valid. But not universal. A lot of disabled people have to limit what they can eat due to their disability. A lot of disabled people have no choice but to eat “unhealthy”* food. This can be due to allergies, disabilities affecting the stomach or digestive system, and how much energy something takes to prepare. people who eat “unhealthy” things are valid and deserving of respect.

People put a bug focus on exercise and/or physical abilities. They talk about how a lot of fat people do actually exercise and stay fat, which is true and valid. But why should people have to exercise to prove that they’re actually valid and deserve respect. And they talk about how fat people can still do things that require a lot of energy and effort (the main things i see are long runs/marathons and yoga).

A lot of disabled people are physically incapable of exercise. And even if they can physically do it, it can be extremely dangerous. Same with a lot of different types of physical activities. This doesn’t make them less deserving of respect or make them suddenly invalid. All it does is show that different people have different levels of physical abilities.

Now, I’ve talked about why it’s ableist to do these things. By why is it important to avoid these things outside of that?

(tw for eating disorders in this next part)

I have an eating disorder. I wont go into specifics, but it’s a restriction based disorder. The ableism in the body positivity movement directly fed into it and made it worse. If you are constantly seeing things that either directly say or imply that your body is not valid, even in the eyes of people who seek acceptance for all bodies, you are going to thing that it does not matter what you do. I thought, and still do to be honest, that since I’m not even valid by the Body Positivity Movement’s standards, it doesn’t matter what I do to myself and i might as well try and be valid by societies damaging standards because that’s better than not being valid at all.

The ableism in the movement is making it counterproductive. And it’s dangerous.

*in quotations because i personally do not think food is healthy or unhealthy. too much water is unhealthy and can kill you.
