Alastair found Thomas where he normally was, situated in the merry thieves room at the Devil’s Tavern. He was sitting on the couch talking to Christopher while Matthew and James laughed at the table on the other side of the room. Cordelia and Lucie were sitting next to them, both looking amused at whatever Matthew and James had said.

   Alastair walked over to Thomas and sat down in his lap with a hmph. Thomas’s arms immediately wrapped around him and he nuzzled his nose into Alastair’s neck. “Bad day?” He asked softly and Alastair just nodded, finally allowing himself to relax in his boyfriend’s arms.

   Christopher watched them with a soft smile. “I’m going to go shower, this is starting to burn.” He said, pausing as he walked by them to ruffle Thomas’s hair. “I did tell you to wash it off as soon as it got on you but you chose to ignore that.” Christopher laughed and shook his head.

  “Admittedly, it would have been wise but alas this is why you’re the responsible one.” Thomas laughed as he watched his cousin disappear into the bathroom.

   Thomas turned his attention back to the dark-haired man in his lap. He kissed Alastair’s neck lovingly. “Want to talk about it?” He asked quietly. Alastair nodded and squirmed around until they were chest to chest with Alastair straddling Thomas’s legs. Thomas raised an amused eyebrow but Alastair was too wrapped up in his story to acknowledge it.

   “I had to go shopping with Cordelia this morning for her dress but I got up late so I had to rush and meet Cordelia at Anna’s before we left and she’d already left which meant I had to go and walk all the way there. By the time I got there, Anna and Cordelia were already done but they invited me to lunch so I went with them but they only had Strawberry toast.” Alastair broke off and gave Thomas an irked look. “Strawberry. You know how much I hate strawberry.”

   Thomas laughed at his boyfriends absolutely uncalled for hatred of strawberries. Thomas furrowed his eyebrows in mock anger. “How dare they.” He said and pressed their foreheads together. Alastair leaned into it with closed eyes.

   “And then I had patrol but I was late because I had to find something other than strawberry toast to eat, so my partner went without me because another person was there already and his partner was late so guess who I got to patrol with?” Thomas raised a questioning eyebrow and Alastair threw his head back exasperated. “Charles. I had to patrol with Charles because I was late like an idiot.”

   Thomas wore an impassive expression but Alastair didn’t miss the way Thomas’s arms tightened possessively as he buried his head in Alastair’s chest. “Darling, you don’t have anything to worry about, especially not with Charles.” Thomas mumbled something incoherently that sounded a bit like ‘I know,’ and Alastair smirked. 

   “Not saying, of course, you don’t have to watch out for others though. You’d be surprised by all the wonderful people I’ve had for patrols.” Alastair could practically hear Thomas’s frown as his grip tightened even more as Alastair laughed.

   “I hate you.” Thomas said, his voice muffled by Alastair’s shirt. “That’s a bold statement coming from someone who has their head buried in my chest. Thomas pulled his face away with a frown that Alastair quickly kissed away.

   “No frowning, it’s my bad day, not your’s love.” Thomas laughed a little and rested back against the couch cushions, his arms dragging Alastair with him. Alastair laid comfortably on Thomas’s chest as he continued his story.

   “I had to walk with him for two hours while he droned on and on about Grace.” Alastair lifted his head briefly so Thomas could see the disbelief on his face. “He was trying to make me jealous. Jealous.” He added again for emphasis. “When that obviously didn’t work he started telling me sorry about all the things he did as if I’d honestly take him back.” 

  Alastair pulled his face away from Thomas’s chest and kissed his cheek before resting his forehead on Thomas’s. “As if I’d leave you for anyone. You’re the best person I know and he bloody knows we’re together so I don’t understand the effort he’s putting into this.” Thomas gave him a soft smile and shook his head, Alastair’s moving too.

   “It’s because he finally realized what he had. He just realized it too late and by the angel, I’m glad about that.” Alastair laughed quietly and wrapped his arms around Thomas’s neck before nuzzling his face where his shoulder and neck met. 

   Thomas kissed his hair and ran a soothing hand up and down his back as Alastair snuggle closer. “I love you.” Alastair said softly, the overwhelming warmth settling in his chest as it always did when he was near Thomas. 

   “I love you too.” Thomas said, his tone matching Alastair’s in a way that made his stomach flutter. 

   “Okay lovebirds, scoot over so you’re not hogging the only comfortable seating.” Cordelia said as she plopped down beside them. Thomas laughed and scooted over, his hands on Alastair’s thighs to lift him up so Alastair could stay in his lap.

  Cordelia smiled at her brother warmly and mouthed, ‘So whipped’. Alastair rolled his eyes but couldn’t help the bright smile that graced his face. 

   Lucie sat on the other side of Cordelia and scooted her until Cordelia was sitting in front of Lucie and Lucie got on her knees behind her. Cordelia closed her eyes as Lucie ran her fingers through Cordelia’s dark red hair, folding piece over piece as she braided it.

   Alastair sighed and relaxed completely against Thomas as his hands worked out the tense spots in his back and shoulders. Alastair was so comfortable and felt so safe that not even Matthew’s innocent teasing riled him up into a meaningless fight like normal.

   Alastair felt a wave of gratitude wash over him for Thomas who seemed to make all his dark, bad days into light ones that he appreciated more than Thomas would ever know.

Alastair's scandalous song performance would have definitely been more appreciated at the Hell Ruelle
