Ever wanted to look back in time? This week, we’re launching a kind of time machine – a telescope so powerful it will help us see back some of the first stars and galaxies made after the Big Bang.
The James Webb Space Telescope is the largest and most advanced telescope we’ve ever put in space. With revolutionary technology, it will study 13.5 billion years of cosmic history and help humanity understand our place in the stars.
Tomorrow, Dec. 25, at 7:20 a.m. ET (12:20 UTC), the Webb Telescope is set to launch from French Guiana, beginning a 29-day journey to a spot a million miles away.

Once Webb launches, the journey has only just begun. The telescope will begin a 2-week-long process of unfolding itself in space before settling in to explore the universe in ways we’ve never seen before.

Part of what sets the Tumblr community from other online communities is the initiative you all take to make sure the important stuff gets discussed. And man, 2021 has been a big year for the important stuff.
Here are your major hits:
Black and Excellent — @blackexcellence launched as a home for Black content and stories. Don’t miss our video series Black + Excellent, which highlights all things Black and excellent across all industries.
LOUDR— After announcing @getloudr, our ad donation program to donate 10% of our top ad inventory to advocacy organizations, we partnered with several BIPOC-led and -focused organizations. From Black Votes Matter to Trill, this program allowed Tumblr to get more eyes on people and things that really matter.
Mental Health is Mental Wealth — Together, we highlighted mental health awareness in May with Free Black Therapy, Trill, Shine, and Headspace. You liked having these free mental health resources around so much we ended up launching a partnership with Kokobot in early November. Just one message to that lovely, empathic bot anonymously connects you to another anonymous person on Tumblr. To top it all off, Tumblr’s Holiday Blues is bringing mental health enthusiasts and Yogis to Tumblr to empower you with some transformational acts of self-care throughout all of December and into January.
In March, we told you all to log off. It was World Sleep Day. You needed sleep. Don’t @ us, just trust us.
LGBTQIA+ Loud and Proud— You shared your Pride with your coming-out tales, shared gratitude to those who have helped you along the way, and celebrated each other for who you are.
Changing the Taxonomy of Tumblr’s Trends — You rallied and asked for a clearer distinction between what’s trending on Tumblr and what’s always important. So you made “Stuff We Care About” happen: Now, things like the Black Lives Matter and Stop Asian Hate movements are at the top of the Explore tab, no matter what.
All of this happened because of you. You, the community who cares about each other, the community who cares about your world, the community who cares to make everyone a little bit happier and healthier. Here’s looking at you, kid.
