Manny’s wife stood in the doorway, covering her mouth as to not interrupt the madness going on in the room. Manny was on the floor blowing raspberries on his daughter’s tummy and the laughter between the two of them was priceless. Unable to stay away she got down a crawled over to them landing on Manny’s back pushing the air out of him.
“Aw hell no,” he laughed, rolling and dumping her on the floor.

For six weeks Manny has come to her tiny house without knocking on the door. Appearing unannounced, without expecting to be let in. For six weeks, Kierra set her lips in an annoyed smirk whenever he showed up to wash her car or pull her trash cans in from the street. She rolled her eyes and shut the kitchen's back door to cancel out the sight of him when she discovered him in her backyard digging the hole to plant her boxed lemon tree. The tree that they bought together right before things went south.
She lay in bed and too angry to sleep the day she found out Manny had set up a scheduled delivery from Miss Yolanda's Florals to arrive at her job before she got in to work on Fridays. It was easy to toss the beautiful bouquet in the trash the first week but harder to continue to do so. As the weeks went by she had to wait until the end of the day and do it discretely - not wanting to stir up unwanted attention from her coworkers. On the fifth week, she walked into her sliver of an office to her favorite flowers sitting on her desk. She stood frozen in the doorway overwhelmed by the gorgeous calla lilies that stood tall in a slim-necked, frosted glass vase. Bastard.
The succulent fuchsia and violet blooms called her shaky fingers and drew her head down to smell their thick scent. She knew the price tag for a custom bouquet of this size, she knew the cost of each expensive stem. Closing her eyes against coming tears, she struggled to breathe deep. Bastard! When she was calm enough, she opened them again but no sooner than she set her purse down, a coworker breezed by commenting about how badly Manny must have fucked up to be doin' all that. The playful words were tossed out in innocence, not knowing it would break Kierra and send her to a bathroom stall to release enough of her tears to make it through another day without him.
She always insisted that she could pay her own bills but Manny was just as bullheaded about kicking in because according to him, he was around more than a roommate and they would be paying at least half. So, it was no real surprise when he texted to let her know that he had left his half of the rent and utilities under her welcome mat and to be sure to get it as soon as she got home.
Manny texted her every day. Always a short message making no demands of her, not asking for anything in return - just harmless enough to keep her from blocking him.

Nothing about any of his actions could be classified as 'new' and that's what made it worse for Kierra. Everything he was doing just reminded her that was who he was when they were together. The man she had to give up because the whispers of him cheating were too much to stomach. The rumors ripped her heart out as if they were gospel. The possibility of them being true hurt too deeply because it had happened before…once. She forgave him then but she couldn't do it - wouldn't do it again. She didn't want to know, so she cut him off and walked away.
And it was killing her.

When Kierra came home from grocery shopping that Saturday morning, he was sitting on her porch. Gripping her steering wheel she cursed. Snatching bags from the back seat, she got out and before she could formulate a smart-ass sentence to send him away, he grabbed the bags she held out of her hands and took her keys to open the door. He was taking advantage of the fact that he knew she wasn't the type to stand outside and argue in front of her neighbors. Pissed as all out, Kierra watched him as he went ahead of her into her house. Damnit! If it were up to her she would have set the rest of the groceries at the door and got right back in her car but her car keys were on the ring he needlessly confiscated. Manny has had a key to Kierra's house since before they made their relationship official. She had always trusted him not to use it except for emergencies and he had always shown her that respect. For him to still be showing it now, pulled on her heartstrings uncomfortably. Kierra trudged up the steps with the last bags muttering to herself in disgust. Why couldn't he have been as honorable with those gap-legged bitches at the clubhouse? Then he wouldn't be sitting outside on the stoop like somebody's stepchild!
As soon as she entered the kitchen, Manny took the bags she carried away from her, ignoring her frustrated sigh. To add to her annoyance, he set them down next to the vase of calla lilies she hadn't been able to make herself get rid of. He had already seen that she kept them alive for a full week. The blooms were stretched open wide, the stems firm and healthy - it gave him a hope he couldn't let show. Without meeting her eyes, he went back to putting her groceries away as if they hadn't spent the last six weeks apart. Refusing to come further into the space he occupied, she scanned the counters for her keys. Wanting to grab them and escape but didn't see them. Shaking her head, she clenched her fists. This son of a bitch pocketed my keys! No words were said while he worked and Kierra stood fuming, her glare burning a hole in his back, which at this point she was convinced he was keeping angled at her on purpose.
When he was halfway done, she found her voice. "Uh-uh. Manny, you gotta go."
He paused in motion, then continued to put the box of cereal he had in his hand on the shelf. Turning on her heel, she headed to the front door to be able to lock it behind him, thinking that she should make him give her house key back before he left regardless of how he had safeguarded it so far.
"No."
"What?" She came back to the kitchen, remaining at the entrance and stared at him standing there with his back to her, unmoving at the pantry. She knew he had a set of balls on him but this was her house. Stomping up behind him, she yelled, "Yes you are! Put my shit down and go!"
He let her snatch the canned goods he was holding away and held up his hands in surrender, leaving the kitchen at a snail's pace. The gesture infuriated her. He was the one that was holding her hostage and he was putting up his hands like she had done something to him? Hell fucking no. "And leave my goddamn keys! All of them."
It was his turning around to finally face her that made her heart stutter-step and her mouth clap closed. It was seeing the real anger in his eyes and the way he tilted his chin up to challenge her. She knew that tilt, it usually came with a quick right fist on the end of it for the idiot who didn't notice the change in his body language during a confrontation. Not that he would ever in his life touch her, but it exposed just how angry he actually was and that for the last six weeks he had kept tightly under wraps. He looked her off, his eyes roaming the room. Tucking his lips in, he shook his head in the negative just once, keeping his voice low, almost soothing. "Nah. I ain't leaving, Kierra."
The hell you're not! "Oh but yes you are! Believe that shit! Manny you can't just-".
"I can't just what?" The heat in his tone was held in check only by his refusal to raise his voice. "I can't come here just because I want you back?"
"Exactly." She snapped, slamming her canned peaches down, her anger at him for causing this, for letting her be embarrassed again, kicked up into high gear.
Manny chuckled as if she had said the dumbest thing he had ever heard. He managed to say his next words as softly as a lover's good night. "Even though you the one on some bullshit, bout some shit I didn't do? Nah." He shook his head slowly, "Nah, Kierra we not doin' it like this."
Like what? Kierra stood in her own kitchen pinned in place by the quiet assertion of her ex. His eyes were slowly and systematically going over her face, her posture, taking mental notes on her breathing, her ability to maintain eye contact - searching, probing for the tiniest crack to invade. He had left her to her anger long enough. Manny was not going to continue to pay for something he didn't do for another minute.
His eyes bored into hers, the effect unsettling. "I can't tell you how much I miss you?"
"No."
"Really?" His chuckle came out on a exhale, setting her teeth on edge, "Oh, I can't?"
Kierra's frown intensified, "No!"
Irritation flickered across his face before a determined calm changed his posture and amusement curled his lip. "Okay."
Manny looked at Kierra standing there furious in all her fresh-faced beauty - flawless, brown skin shining, fresh braids to her waist and perfect legs in soft denim shorts. He wanted to run his thumb over the frown creasing her brow. He wanted to take her hand and uncurl her fingers from the balled-up fist she was tapping on her leg. He wanted to convince her that the hinting gossip she heard was not only lies but at this point only alive in her head. The ones that had put it out there had long since moved on to other names to drop and other relationships to ruin.
"So, what else ain't I allowed to tell you, bella?" Putting his hands in his pockets, he took a gliding step forward. After weeks of not hearing it, his voice was as soothing as a hot bath.
"Can I tell you how I don' sleep worth shit cuz you ain't there?"
With every step he took closer, she shuffled backward. And when her butt bumped the counter he kept coming, so she kept moving, skirting to the left - desperately needing the physical space to be able to think. Not being near him for six weeks may have cleared her mind but it didn't prepare her for the way he was looking at her, or the way he smelled, or the draw of his voice - the smooth, rumbling tenor fogging her brain right now.
"Or how I pick up to call yo ass to tell you somethin' good happened, but then I gotta remember you ain't fuckin' wit me no more?"
Her lower back was pressed against the counter but Manny wasn't touching her. He had kept his hands in his pockets and somehow that made him feel even more intimidating. Stopping in front of her, he cocked his head to the side with raised eyebrows, dipping down to her eye level.
"Aight then, how bout I tell you how I'm passin' up pussy left and right cause even though you say you done with me, an' all that stupid shit…all I can think about is yo ass."
Kierra rolled her eyes in his face and tried to slide out of the corner she had trapped herself into.
"Mm-mm. No." Manny shook his head, quickly correcting her attempt to flee by boxing her in with his hands resting on the countertop on each side of her body. Kierra folded her arms across her chest, putting a clear barrier between them.
"I cain't tell you all I think about is you?" His gaze was soft, dismantling her anger. "Hm? I ain't allowed to say that shit no more?
Kierra's mouth opened twice but nothing came out. She swallowed, holding on tight to the hurt that would protect her before she spoke, "You can say it to anybody you want to…but me."
The finality of her statement was softened by her inability to look him in the eye. "Okay."
Okay?
Manny's lowered register came from someplace deep in his throat, "Can I come check on you then?"
"No."
The length of his pause made her look at him. Mistake. Paralyzed by the polished ebony of his eyes, he leaned back and those same eyes dipped down from her face landing pointedly on the split between her legs before coming back to meet hers again. "I can't come see if…she needs me?"
My god. Kierra's voice was muted when she replied, "No."
Manny leaned forward near her ear, "Yes I can, reina." (queen) Looking her in the eyes, he spoke with conviction, "She's my baby girl. I can't let her think I abandoned her. I love her."
His fingers busied themselves, unfastening the button fly of Kierra's shorts. Shit! As much as Kierra didn't want anything to happen, she missed him so much. Cursing herself for weakness, she grabbed at his hands.
"Keirra." His voice was checking her but his expression was soft. Taking her hands, he ran his thumbs over her knuckles for a moment then put them on the counter, lightly pressing in a silent order to leave them there. "I just want to talk to her for a minute. Gimmie a minute."
Carefully, he drug her shorts down her legs as he lowered himself into a squat. Kierra watched the top of his head as he cleared his throat. She stood ramrod straight, trying to regulate her breathing while he straightened the crooked hemline of her panties across her waist. Her abdomen twitched out of her control from his fingertips grazing her skin.
With his hands resting on the backs of her thighs, Manny addressed 'his baby'.
"Aye, baby girl. I fucked up with your mami. She mad at me an' shit…don't wanna talk to me no more. But you'll listen to me, right? You know how much I love you, don't you?"
Kierra's hands balled into fists to keep from stroking his head, to feel the familiar soft, short hairs on her palms.
"Thing is, I ain't done nothin' wrong this time…but I fucked up before so it looks bad."
Kierra exhaled loudly through her nose, blinking away coming tears mortified that Manny chose just then to glance up at her. Giving her thighs a light squeeze, he continued, "Can you talk to your ma for me, baby? Tell her I said I'm sorry she's hurting, but I ain't fucked nothin' up 'cause I love her."
When Manny's head fell forward against her, his breath heated up her skin and she felt it to her bones. Gripping the counter, she looked heavenward for strength, wishing she could block him out - wishing she had a reason other than fear to call him a liar.
"Tell her I need her…an' tell her she's still my fuckin' favorite person, alrigh'? Please." Separating himself from her, he let out a low chuckle. "Yeah, you still my favorite too, baby."
Finished, he leaned forward to press a light kiss to her abdomen, causing her to suck in her stomach and hold her breath. Manny coming back up, bringing her shorts with him were the longest seconds of her life. His knuckles bumped and brushed as he refastened each button vibrating her nerves, and causing her legs to shake.
"Thank you."
Folding her arms again Kierra wrapped them tight around herself. She hated how vulnerable she felt…how open. Don't look at him. Just don't look at him. The jingling of her keys coerced her eyes back to his face and her stomach fluttered. Holding them up by his cheek, he gave her a knowing smile but there was sadness in his eyes where anger was before. "Here you go, ma."
Kierra nodded in thanks and took them, not yanking her hand away when his fingers lingered. Manny dropped a soft kiss on her cheek, murmuring, "Take care, bella. Te amo."
He made it all the way to her front door when he heard her call out to him tentatively from the kitchen. "You hungry?"
Manny's smile was euphoric, relief washing over him at those two simple words. He had been alive long enough to know a woman that hates you, doesn't feed you. He called back to her from where he stood, wanting to hear her say it again. "What, ma?"
"Boy, you heard me."
Knowing he was messing with her, Kierra pressed her lips down on the beginnings of a smile that threatened to come through and laid out the invitation to stay plainly. "Are you hungry or not?"
Manny took a deep breath and let it out. Turning on his heel, he ran his hand over his mouth and chin to damper down the elation he knew was all over his face and headed for the kitchen.

Coco and Creeper were carrying the crates of beer from the house. Hank was prepping the barbecue and Bishop was setting up the blankets that were around the fire.
From the corner of your eye you saw your dad and husband walking through the gate of the ranch. A smile spread on your face as Liliana squirmed in your arms wanting to get to her Papi. Placing her on the ground you watched her run as fast as she could to her dad. There was no hiding it she was a daddy’s girl but then again so were you.
Following her, you took the boxes off Riz so he could scoop Liliana up in his arms, making her squeal as he held her upside down.
“Everything ready?” He asked as you neared the others.
“Yeah this little one has been bossing everyone around” you laughed.
“That’s my girl” Riz smirked as he moved Liliana up right and she threw her little arms around his neck kissing his cheek.
As the light started to fade the bonfire was lit and everyone was laid on blankets around the fire. You were laid between Riz’ legs with Liliana curled up in your arms.
“How about we roast some marshmallows?” Riz asked tapping her nose.
“Stupid question Papi” she sassed clambering off your knee.
“You know she gets her sass from you” Riz smirked kissing you softly.
“I know” you shrugged “and I’m proud”
You watched your husband and daughter walk over to the smaller fire that was set up for roasting marshmallows. You were in your own thoughts when your dad sat next to you putting his arm around your shoulder.
“So tell me something mija” Taza smirked kissing your head “I’ve not seen you touch a drop of beer tonight so am I expecting grandchild number two”
“Daaaad” you scolded giggling slightly “but yes I’m pregnant again, I’ve not told Riz yet”
“What are you doing still sat here then” he smirked softly pushing you “go tell then man”
Rolling your eyes at your father you made your way over to Riz and Liliana.
“I have something to tell you” you whispered smiling at your husband.
“What’s up mi amor?” Riz asked looking up at you.
“Well what do you say to adding something to this family?” You grinned placing your hand over your stomach hoping he got the hint.
“As in another baby?” He asked wide eyed. “Because if so I really want a son I’m outnumber here”
“Good job you are gonna be a daddy again then” you whispered placing your hand on his cheek “because there’s kinda no returns on this gift”
“I’m gonna be a Papi again” he breathed as tears filled his eyes “did you hear that Lili? You are going to be a big sister”
“As long as I get a sister” she pouted “boys smell”
“Hey” Riz pouted pulling a fake sad face at her.
“You don’t smell Papi but other boys do” she giggled kissing his nose.
“Honestly I don’t care what we have, girl or boy, all I care about is my family is growing” he grinned placing his hand over yours on your stomach.
