“Introduced By 17th Century French Doctors, This Garb Was Used All Over Europe During Outbreaks Of

“Introduced by 17th Century French doctors, this garb was used all over Europe during outbreaks of the plague. One belief was that the disease was spread by birds, and the bird-like masks could draw the plague away from the patient and onto the doctor’s clothes, which in turn protected him from the ‘bad air’.

The beaked mask was made from bronze, its tip  filled with medicinal and aromatic herbs to ‘cleanse’ the bad air and cover up the stench of death and the  ruptured buboes. The doctor breathed through two small nose holes in the mask and placed garlic in his mouth and incense in his nose and ears. The full-length gown was made out of thick material which was then covered with wax, with leather breeches, gloves and full length boots. Underneath the cloak, the doctor wore an elaborately prepared embroidered smock soaked in exotic preservative liqueurs, camphor oil and wax. Again, the idea was to isolate the doctor’s body from plague-causing bad air. He also wore a wide brimmed leather hat which identified his status and carried a long staff to drive away anyone who came too close and help him communicate with the public as the elaborate headgear made speaking difficult, and the circles of glass or crystal set in the mask to protect the doctor’s eyes impeded their sight.”

Admit It, Flavored Water Is Fun. Throw In A Bunch Of Your Craziest Combinations Together Or Your Favorite

Admit it, flavored water is fun. Throw in a bunch of your craziest combinations together or your favorite fruits together and you might never look back!

Better yet, it’s a great activity to do with your kids and the variety of colors in the water may just attract them. Moreover, aside from getting your hydration in, you are also downing the extra vitamins and minerals from the various herbs, veggies and fruits you put in. Do you need any more convincing?

Tips about flavored water:

Fresh vs. frozen fruit. When in season, I prefer to use fresh fruit. However, when fruit is out of season, the fresh version can be tart or flavorless. Because fruit that is to be frozen is picked at the peak of ripeness, it is often the better option for the best flavor, sweetness, and nutrients. I find this to especially to be the case with berries and peaches.

A variety of fresh herbs. Use whatever herbs you like or happen to have on hand. I picked all of these from my herb garden and have tried them in flavored waters. It’s surprising how well they blend with most fruit flavors, and they amp up the refreshing factor of the water. Mint is the most obvious herb choice. I also have tried basil, rosemary, sage, thyme, lavender, and tarragon. All good.

WASH FRUIT THOROUGHLY! The citrus and berries need to be really, really clean to keep contaminants and bacteria out of your flavored water. I recommend organic fruit, if it isn’t going to be peeled.

Use your veggies too. Have leftover carrots or cucumber from cooking? Throw them in!

Recipes #1

Minty Cucumber Lime

1/2 a cucumber, sliced 1/2 a lime, sliced 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves

Strawberry-Lemon with Basil

1/2 cup sliced strawberries 1/2 a lemon, sliced 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves

Watermelon Mint

1 cup cubed watermelon 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves

Pineapple-Orange with Ginger

1/2 cup cubed pineapple 1/2 an orange, sliced 1 tablespoon freshly-grated ginger

What You’ll Need:

1-quart jars

Water

Wooden Spoon

Agave or another sweetener (optional)

What to Do:

Choose which recipe you’re making — or come up with your own combination — and gather all of the ingredients.

Place the fruit, herbs, and/or spices in the bottom of one of the glass jars, and muddle with a wooden spoon. (That basically means mash up the fruit in the bottom of the jar to release some of the flavor-filled juices.)

Fill the jar with water and give it a taste. (You can also fill the jar with seltzer water for a fizzy treat.) If you’d like something a bit sweeter, try adding some agave (and mix until dissolved).

Enjoy as-is or refrigerate overnight for maximum flavor.

Recipes #2:

All Citrus Flavored Water

1 orange, 1 lime, 1 lemon, Water

Raspberry + Lime Flavored Water

Pineapple + Mint Flavored Water

Blackberry + Sage Flavored Water

Watermelon + Rosemary Flavored Water

Recipes #3

Well, here are just some of the combinations you could toy with.

Watermelon and mint (pictured above)

Cucumber and mint

Lemon and mint

Cherry and lime

Watermelon and cucumber

Ginger and lemon

Orange and pineapple

Lemon and lavender

Lime and mint

Ginger and lime

Pineapple and mango

Strawberries and lime

Orange, lime, and lemon

Lemon and a pinch of cayenne

Papaya and mango

Carrots, grapefruits, cucumber, mint, lemon.

This list is non-exhaustive, so don’t stop here. Be creative and who knows you might just discover your personal favorite.

Enjoy drinking your way to health! :D

I Normally Don’t Do Serious Giveaways, But I’m Going To Do This Just One Time Because:
I Normally Don’t Do Serious Giveaways, But I’m Going To Do This Just One Time Because:

I normally don’t do serious giveaways, but I’m going to do this just one time because:

1) It’s Ringo Starr’s Birthday

2) I seriously need to get rid of these

3) There could be people who would really enjoy owning one of these bad boys

So I’m giving away these three wristbands that my mom caught when we went to the Capitol Records building in Los Angeles to celebrate Ringo Starr’s 74th birthday.  On one side, it’s got three stars in it (R***), and on the other it says “Peace and Love”.  It’s very Ringoesque as you can tell.  Ringo threw these white wristbands that my mom caught, as you can see pictured above.  Well, my mom got three extra and we don’t know what to do with it so I told her that I’m going to give it away to people on the internet so yeah.  Anyway requirements:

You don’t have to follow me, but it’d be nice if you did

Only reblogs will be considered

I don’t care how many times you reblog tbh so reblog away

You gotta have your askbox open

And yeah you gotta be okay with giving your address to me because how the hell will you get this?

I’ll try my best to ship anywhere, so anyone around the world can participate

I’m gonna film myself randomly selecting winners using my ti-84 and fancy random number picking shit I learned from stats so you won’t say that I’m being biased

The giveaway ends next week on July 14, 2014 at 9pm PST

Good luck and please reblog, I’m desperate to get rid of these lmao

many will enter 3 will win

John Was Right In The Middle Of Telling A Funny Story, Excitedly Fidgeting Around With A Burning Cigarette,

John was right in the middle of telling a funny story, excitedly fidgeting around with a burning cigarette, when suddenly he stopped, grunted something and let his head fall to his food-filled plate. I laughed, thinking it was another one of those “typical John” jokes, but his head stayed in that position. His eyes remained closed and his breathing was getting heavy. Then he started snoring. I looked around, not knowing what to do, being a little worn-out myself. I was even worried he might have hurt himself, what with his knife laying so near to his eye. When I saw the ash falling from the burning cigarette, which was still perched in his hand, I decided to leave him the way he was. “At least he’ll wake up,” I thought, “when the cigarette burns down to his fingers.” Then I began thinking of the lovely fried egg on the plate… My God, what one thinks when an unexpected situation comes up!

After a few minutes passed, he woke up, swearing like mad because of his burned fingers, and started to eat his spiegelei as if nothing had happened. “That’s ice cold, that junk!” ~ Klaus Voormann
