Can you talk a little bit about the stuff you looked at for the Terrifics' costumes? I can see shades of the Cockrum costume for PG, and some of the original Red and Yellow stuff for Plas...
Sure!
Phantom Girl- You’re right about looking to Cockrum for inspiration here. I can’t remember now if it was Jeff who first suggested modeling her look after Cockrum’s design for Tinya, or if I just liked that one best, but either way it’s my favorite PG look. In fact I said as much on the original model sheet.
Nearly everything about it is a nod to that design. The hair clips, the not-really-a belt, the “T” being striped. I played around with having the sleeves with holes but eventually did away with them altogether. The cuffs on the gloves are a nod to the bell-bottoms. Her hair was based at least partially on a Jeff Smith sketch of Mary Marvel that I always liked and thought would go well with the clips. I also tried my best to make it clear she doesn’t just look exactly like Tinya but maybe that got lost in translation along the way.
Mister Terrific- A fairly traditional take on him, based on his most well-known look and large bits of what Cully Hamner did with him. Basically just streamlining and emphasizing the T shapes.
The rest of the team’s looks are supposed to spin off from his in various ways so I wanted to keep it relatively simple.
Metamorpho- With both Rex and Plas, I originally submitted a a team shot with both of them in their “solo” costumes, as Jeff and I are big fans of their solo looks and (at least in my case) resistant to letting go of them. It does make more sense when all four of them are together though, so I get it.
Rex’s belt here is based on my buddy Matt Kaufenberg’s design, which is a favorite. His team suit is basically just a color-swapped belt with the T-buckle, and we bulked him up a bit for the team. I’ve already talked about why I made him look the way I did here, if you want to check that out.
Plastic Man- Like I said with Rex, I really wanted to keep Plas in the red and yellow, even if I ultimately agreed that it didn’t work for the team look. I was very happy to see Ivan use the solo costume I designed for him though, as I’m really proud of that thing.
The team suit is pretty simple from there– plugged in a T shape on his torso, switched the yellow out for red, put in the T-buckle. He’s a little taller too, but obviously that’s relatively fluid. I hated having to lose the diamond, but it did make more sense. Like I mentioned above, the other three members’ looks are all inspired by Mister Terrific’s design.
Hope that answered your question!
Hi! do you have a reading guide for what to read after crisis on infinite earths?
Btw, thank you for doing the reading guides 🫂
hi of course!! so this guide is going to be a little longer than my last ones just because there's quite a few events that kara crosses over into and a lot of comics you have to switch between, but i do want to make it as easy to follow as possible :) as always, bolded issues are required, italicized issues are recommended, and the rest are optional! also i put [brackets] around the titles of storylines/events.
Superman/Batman (2003) #8-13 (or you can watch Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (2010) instead which I recommend. the art is a lot more tasteful and it's a very faithful adaptation of the comic so you won’t be missing out on anything.)
Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes (2006) #16-36
Supergirl (2005) #1-5, 9-10, 19 (these issues feature incredibly oversexualized art and gross depictions of adult/minor relationships, but if you’re interested in kara’s early characterization, the beginnings of her friendship with cassie sandsmark, or her difficulty fitting in on earth then you’re welcome to read what i’ve provided. you can disregard anything to do with krypton and kara’s relationship with her parents as that is all retconned in later issues of the series.)
[Amazons Attack!] Teen Titans (2003) #47-48 Amazons Attack! (2007) #3 Supergirl (2005) #20 Amazons Attack! (2007) #4 Teen Titans (2003) #49
