One of the baristas at a nearby Starbucks makes me lose my mind every time Iâm working there by saying things that are not outside the spectrum of normal human words but are just slightly off-the-wall.
Barista: Welcome to Starbucks, home of delicious, what deliciousness can I put in motion for you today?
Customer: ⊠Can I get a trenta pink drink please?
Barista: Go big or go home, we here at Starbucks appreciate your commitment, what else can I get started for you?
***
Customer: Nitro cold brew with shots of espresso please.
Barista: Brave of you to commit to staying awake for three days, anything else today?
***
Barista: *slams open drive-thru window* HI HOW ARE YOU?
Customer: âŠIâm pretty good.
Barista: Are you ready to be even better? Because youâre about to be. *hands them their coffee*Â
***
Barista, realizing that a drink was made wrong: *slams open window* SO how do you feel about surprises?
Customer: âŠ.theyâre okay.
Barista: Great because Iâm about to give you one.
***
Barista: You have two drinks so I am going to hand you two straws which means, FANTASTIC news, these straws double as drumsticks. / You have one drink so I am going to hand you one straw and, promise not to tell anyone, this straw doubles as a magic wand.
***
Barista: Here are those cake pops, I plucked them fresh from the tree myself.
***
Barista: *slams open window, holding drink* Amazing, fantastic, delicious, you are a very lucky man/woman!
***
Barista, realizing drink is being delayed or remade: Looks like itâs gonna be just one minute so they have time to put the extra love in.
***
Barista: Iâll be with you in one hot second. *beat* WOW that second sure was hot!
Anyway she has a few dozen catchphrases she rotates appropriately and itâs both distracting and fantastic to listen.
âOK. I lied earlier. THIS was the highlight of my parenting week. Sending my 13-year-old daughter into the store for (whispers) âfeminine hygiene products,â and having the following text exchange. I died, she gave me life, I died again. And she drew an illustration, on the spot, ON HER PHONE, to drive her point home.â

âHeâs dead. Thereâs nothing left of him.â Alex frowned. Katherine held her tightly, trying to console her girlfriend. âWhy didnât you try to stop them?â She whispered.Â
âAre you talking to me?â Katherine frowned. Alex ignored her, refusing to look at her. She continued to talk to herself. âAlex.. Snap out of it.â Katherine shook Alex slighty, trying to break the hold she had on herself. âHey!â Katherine slapped Alexâs face lightly, causing her to jump at the sudden feeling.
âIâm so sorryâŠâ Alex whispered.

thereâs a portrait of cedric diggory in the hufflepuff common room.
nobody knows who painted it. the other houses speculate, but the hufflepuffs know not to ask, because thatâs not really whatâs important.
itâs one of the moving ones, of course. sometimes cedric isnât in it - itâs said that the portrait has a twin, over amos diggoryâs fireplace, and cedric always loved his father. but heâs there enough, smiling down at the hufflepuffs who congregate in the common room, watching them as they go about their lives.
the portrait is by the door, next to one of the overstuffed yellow chairs. students sit there to talk to cedric, with some modicum of privacy. at first, it was his friends, the people who knew him and miss him and love him. but as time went on it became those who knew him by reputation. kids seeking advice, help with homework. someone to talk to, on a long and cold night. gradually, he became a legend, spoke in hushed whispers to the first-years as they came in. if youâre ever in trouble, talk to cedric. heâll always help you.
after the battle of hogwarts, when the furniture was mended and the new students hesitantly made their way in, there was another portrait next to it, of hufflepuffâs favoured daughter. tonks, known by one name only, blew painted bubbles from her world of acrylic and canvas. while students came to cedric for help and advice, they came to tonks to ask questions. she would tell the most wicked stories, and some of them were even true. when someone needed cheering up, when they were wanting to brainstorm their next epic prank, they went to tonks.
she wasnât always there, either. another portrait above a cot, where a baby with shocking blue hair could look at it and laugh. but when she was, she was always happy to have people come to her. when they did, it felt like she wasnât just paint and canvas. she felt alive.
hufflepuffs look after their own, you see. dead or alive.

Honestly, my favorite thing at the moment is all the marvel headcanons where Hela wasnât cray-cray homicidal, and sheâs an overprotective bitchy sister.
