Remember mama Kurapika? Well, here’s papa Leorio and that disgusting stubble attack that every dad does to his kids. Ugh, dads!
“Sorry, but I’m a little ticked off right now. So I’m just gonna take it out on you.” -Killua It’s so hard to draw the electricity realistically but I’m having fun with the process nonetheless. =)
In the following post I will attempt to explain how Hisoka nearly got himself killed asking Illumi for permission to fuck Killua.
This is the scene in question:
As you may remember, Illumi asks Hisoka to help him in capturing Killua to prevent him from using Allukas powers to help Gon. Hisoka then turns to Illumi and asks him the following:
ところで、僕はキルアをやるのは、ありかい?
Both the manga and anime translate this as
By the way, am I allowed to kill Killua?
Which is fair enough, except that Hisoka never mentions killing him at all. The verb he uses is やる which literally means “to do”. It’s used as a euphemism for killing, but, you guessed it, it is also a euphemism for, well, sex. But how can we tell which one Hisoka is referring to?
Here, his gesture comes into play. Of course, the anime is faithful to the original. This is Hisoka in the manga:
The gesture is even more prominent here.
For everyone who isn’t savvy in Japanese nonverbal communication:
His hand gesture appears to be セックス (sekkusu), lit. Sex. It’s used so you don’t have to actually bring sex up in a conversation, but still make it clear that you’re talking about dirty stuff. Usually, this gesture requires the thumb to stick out between your middle and index finger, but this version is sometimes used as well. Since HxH appears in Jump, they might have had him change it as a form of censoring, but that’s just me taking guesses.
(Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fig_sign)
On the Japanese wikipedia site for this sign it says that the thumb represents the penis, and the index and middle finger represent the vagina, it is possible that for this reason Hisoka chose the middle and ring finger instead, since Killua is a male.
In any case, it is clear that Hisoka is using this gesture to communicate to Illumi that he is talking about dirty stuff here. The fact that his words could mean both things work in his favor. He probably just said that to provoke Illumi, anyhow.
And that’s how Hisoka nearly died because of a stupid joke.
I know how much the 2011 anime portrays Killua as generally snarky and pretty withdrawn, but in the manga…
…he’s actually really sweet.
so i ended up pulling out my japanese copy of vol 32 bc i was curious about the scar thing and i noticed something else that was really interesting. also hella fucked up lmao. did you know that in illumi's fucking creepy scene when he sees the amount of power from nanika healing gon, nanika's name has "kore" in furigana? just to drive the dehumanization home. he literally says ナニカ(これ)はオレのものだ‼ (literal translation: this is my object)
OH THIS IS SUCH A GOOD CATCH, THANK YOU!!
So, to explain to everyone here who doesn’t know what furigana is, furigana is basically a reading aid in Japanese. So sometimes complicated kanji has text in hiragana (the basic alphabet) beside it to let readers know how to pronounce the word if they can’t read it.
I just googled ‘furigana’ to find some example images to better explain:
How it appears in manga:
So!! What @itsybitsyjoltik just pointed out is that, in the manga, Illumi’s dialogue is written as “Nanika belongs to me” but Nanika’s name has the furigana for the word “this” above it, so Illumi is clearly referring to Nanika but calling her “this”. He also uses the word ‘mono’ (もの/物), which refers to objects. (There is a way of using ‘mono’ to refer to people, but it’s written as 者 and almost always has a qualifier before it). So he is basically saying “this thing/object belongs to me”, and it’s VERY deliberately written by Togashi to drive home the point that Nanika is being treated as subhuman again.
Ahhh, I really need to buy all the Japanese manga volumes…! I’m sure there’s a ton of stuff like this I’m missing out on. Thanks for catching this!!
To those who think Silva isn't manipulating Killua with the blood pact...
.... he actually got secretly mad when Killua brought it up.
