Pairing: Knight!Bucky x Queen!Reader
Word Count: 1.7K
Warnings: a little bit of angst, but that's honestly about it.
You never lasted too long at galas, especially when they weren't in your own kingdom.Â
Not having the familiarity of your staff. The smell of salt in the air as the ocean breeze washed in through your open corridor. The certain click of your shoes against the marble floors. It was all yours and safe and commonplace.Â
Being in someone else's kingdom, at an event where everyone wants a chance to dance with the unwed queen was exhausting. You almost never left the dance floor with how many suitors were trying to win you over, to take the seat of King next to you. You never enjoyed any of them though. You knew they were just in it for the title, the power. Most of them not believing you should be able to rule on your own. That it was sacrilege that you still remained unwed.Â
But you put on a brave face, a large fake smile to appease them and to keep the peace. If you didn't provoke them, it gave them no reason to storm your castle's walls.Â
The exhaustion was evident on your face as James watched you from the sidelines. He was to have eyes on you at all times, especially since you weren't in your own home. He was your protector, hand picked by your father before he passed to be your personal knight until you relieved him or reassigned him. You had yet to do either in the five years he'd been by your side.Â
His armor clinked as he made his way to you, mindful not to bump into anyone with the bulky metal. Expertly moving through the sea of royals, he paced his steps with the musicians playing in the corner - he'd practiced this dance with you too many times to count. You'd wanted a partner to brush up on your skills and you'd asked him one day during your breakfast. That was the closest he'd ever been to you for that long.
Your dance partner spun you out from their arm and towards James, who gave you a knowing look when you spotted him. He smirked at the pleading in your eyes and quickened his pace, stopping next to you.Â
"Pardon me, Lord Wilson, I was wondering if I could steal her grace for a moment," He requested, the tone in his voice really leaving no room for argument. He watched as you curtsied and the lord bowed to you before you turned and grabbed James's elbow, allowing him to lead you outside.Â
"I thought you might like a breath of fresh air," He leaned down a bit so you could hear his whispers as you passed other attendants. "I could tell you weren't enjoying the way Lord Wilson was spinning you around the floor.Â
The noise that left your lips was a mix between a scoff and a laugh and it pulled James lips into a smile as he looked down at you.Â
Your hand slipped from his elbow and he let you walk just a step in front of him. You glanced over your shoulder, "I appreciate the concern, as always, Sir James."Â
"I thought we discussed this," He started, following you as you wandered the gardens that, in his opinion, could never rival your own, "I requested you not to call me James."
"You did," You smirked, stopping at a stone railing that overlooked the small pond as you turned to face him entirely, leaning against the stone, "but I do love seeing you in a fit over it."Â
"I'd hardly call me reminding her highness of my request a fit," He chuckled as he stood just out of reach, which you took notice of. You always did.Â
"Why are you standing over there," you asked, your smile slipping, "I won't bite."Â
He gave you an easy smile, soaking in your attention, basking in it.Â
It wasn't that you never gave it to him or that you were stingy with it. In fact, it was quite the opposite. You were always speaking with him. He accompanied you everywhere you went, so why wouldn't you? What kind of queen would you be if you didn't speak with your personal knight at all while he protected you?Â
You two had grown close over the years, your relationship becoming more of one between friends rather than one of subordinate and superior. And James didn't mind one bit. He'd never tell anyone, for risk of being reassigned away from you, but he loved you.Â
He was in love with you.Â
He had been for years and it was one of the many reasons that he was so persistent about protecting you, even when you told him to get some rest - he'd just sit on the floor outside your chamber doors those nights. You started having Steve switch with him at night so he could sleep too, but he'd only sleep for a handful of hours and get washed up before coming back to switch again.Â
You held your hand out to him, waiting for his gloved fingers to gently grasp yours. He did so, but at the expense of the tug in his chest.Â
In all his years of serving you, he'd never touched you. He always made sure something was between the two of you, his gloves, your fur coat, something.Â
It wasn't that he didn't want to touch you, he was actually dying to do so. He dreamed of the day that he could feel your skin against his, but he didn't want to taint your perfectly smooth complexion with his dirtied callouses. You deserved someone with a softer touch than his own. You deserved someone's hands who hadn't been covered in blood and dirt and grime and sin.Â
He let you guide him to stand next to you, waiting for you to drop his hand, but you continued to hold on to it, absently fiddling with the leather covering his skin. God, what he wouldn't do to be able to actually hold your hand. To brush elbows. To feel your fingers on his arm as he led you around town.Â
"Jamie?" He glanced up from your fingers to see you staring at the still water of the pond.Â
"Yes, your highness?"Â
It was a moment before you responded, but you didn't look over at him. Instead, you gazed down at the stone under your fingertips, scratching your nail along its surface - something he knew you did when you were nervous.Â
"Do you think they're right?" If he hadn't been waiting with baited breath, he would've missed the question with how quiet you were. He figured you didn't want anyone else hearing your conversation so he dipped his head lower towards your ear.Â
"What about?"Â
"About me," You glanced up at him then, causing his heart to almost leap out of his chest. He'd never been close like this. Close enough to speak in hushed tones, sure, but never enough to see the details in your irises, the individual lashes that brushed against your cheeks when you blinked. "Do you agree that I'm some - some mad woman to not be married? To not have a husband to do the ruling while I give him heirs?"Â
"Well," he started, testing the waters and giving your fingers a gentle squeeze, "I guess that depends on why you have yet to wed someone."Â
You were silent at that as you refused to look away, but you squoze his fingers back, gripping his hand as you pulled it closer to you.Â
He wanted to pull away from you, surely this close proximity would bring more talk about you to the other royals. Someone of your standing shouldn't be this close to him, holding his hand, noses almost touching.Â
Yet, here you were.Â
"I fear someone may already have my heart," You stated, glancing between his eyes. A pit formed in his chest and he had to ignore the ache as he steadied his breathing.Â
Of course you had your eye on someone. With as many potential suitors as you had, how could you not already have a certain person in mind? But that left the question - why hadn't you wed them yet? Surely, whoever had caught your eye would be pleased to wed you. Who wouldn't was the better question.Â
"Why haven't you wed them yet, your grace?" He gruffly asked, swallowing down the sudden surge of emotion in his throat. He was your personal knight - he couldn't let something like this break him down. Especially when you were not within your own palace walls. He had to remain calm and collected, at least until you retired for the evening. Then he could let the cracks spread until morning.Â
You tipped your head down to look at his chest as you placed your free hand over the armor there, your nails gently tapping against the metal. "That's a sensitive conversation that shouldn't be held outside of our home walls, don't you think?"Â
You looked back up at him, almost craning your neck with your proximity. He nodded, dazed at how your voice sounded when you said 'our home.' It wasn't the first time you'd referred to it like that, you did both live there. But there was something about the way your voice lightened when you said it. Like it was lifting a weight off your chest saying you wanted to tell him your secret. And though he may not be ready to hear who'd stolen your affections, a sense of pride filled him. You trusted him enough to tell him this secret of yours.Â
And even if he wasn't ready to hear it, he'd protect that secret with his life if need be. Because it'd be for you.
He nodded, muttering a word of agreement and you smiled, but it lingered longer than usual. The corners of your mouth stayed lifted as you pried your gaze from his and released his hand, turning back to the path. You took a couple steps away before looking back over your shoulder at him, your smile ever-present.Â
"Let us go home, shall we?" You asked.Â
He shoved his nerves down as far as they'd go, steeling himself in preparation for your secret, and nodded once.
"Yes, your grace." He stepped away from the pond to follow you to the waiting carriage.Â
He knew the time would come when you'd find a proper suitor, he couldn't expect you to stay unwed forever.Â
He just didn't expect it to hurt as much as it did.

Lunch breaks are invariably too short. They feel even shorter since you spend them wrapped up in Copiaâs cassocked arms, hidden away in an empty corner behind the entrance to the library. Your back is pressed against the cool stone walls, your habit disheveled from his wandering hands, leaving half of your leg exposed to the chill draft haunting this part of the abbey.
The cool air feels heavenly against your heated skin where Copiaâs fingertips are trailing up to your hip and back down in a steady dance. Itâs oddly tender compared to the way his mouth is so insistent on devouring you. You can only imagine the purple discolorations blooming on your neck right now, the smears of lipstick and bite marks he left in his impatient fervor after heâd pinned you to the wall.
The bells have long since chimed to announce the passing of lunch hour. He should be back in his office and you should be back behind the reception desk. And yet your arms are still tightly slung around his shoulders as his tongue licks into your hungry mouth.
âI have to go back,â he mumbles for the fifth time as he breaks away for air, trying to step back but you donât let go of his neck. âAmoreâŚâ
With your hand in his hair, you press your mouth to his once again, ignoring his complaints. His biretta has long since fallen off his head and you make use of the easy access, dragging your nails over his scalp in the way that he loves so much. He moans loudly and kisses back for a moment, moving his swollen lips against yours just almost chastely now. With the kiss distracting you, his gloved fingers wrap around your wrists and he pulls them off of him, pretending to pin you to the wall. With your hands off, he tries to tear himself away once more, but your fingers grasp his pellegrina at the last second. You yank him back, bringing your mouth to his ear as he stumbles into you. âOne more kiss? Please?â
âYou want your Cardinal to be late?â he whispers, bracing himself against the wall behind you.
âYes, if it means I get another kiss.â
âI will get in trouble, amore.â He drags his nose along your cheek before nuzzling yours. âDo you have no compassion for me?â
âNo.â
He tsks, pulling back slightly when you try to capture his lips again. âSo cruel. So cruel to your Cardinal and you claim to love me.â
âI do love you. Thatâs why I want another one, silly.â You try to pull at his robes again but he wonât budge. âPlease please please.â
He whimpers softly. âYou know what begging does to me, dolce.â
âPlease. Please, Cardinal, I need one more.â
âOne more, then you will let me go?â
âMhm.â
He leans in, kissing you as softly as he can muster. You trap his full bottom lip between your teeth for a second and he groans, pressing in harder until the back of your head hits the wall again. He pulls away with a desperate sigh and you whine at the loss of him.
âOne more,â you beg, tugging at his robes.
âAmore,â he groans. âYou are getting greedy now.â
âIsnât greed a virtue?â
âI think you are mixing that up, no?â
He gives you another peck before he fully pulls away. You allow it this time, conceding in favor of your own reputation. Someone is going to want something from you any second now and you still have to get presentable.
Copia straightens his rumpled cassock before glancing at your ruined face with a smirk. âWe continue this tonight, amore,â he promises. âYou will bring the same hunger, yes?â
You nod, smiling like a fool when he winks at you. He almost stumbles over his own feet as he turns back around, still drunk on endorphins and your taste. A few deep breaths and you gather your wits before your eyes get caught by a red blob of color on the floor.
You pick up his biretta and put it on your head. Heâs already halfway down the hall when you call out to him. âLooks like you forgot something, Cardinal.â
He spins around, the skirt of his cassock whirling around his legs. âDonât even say it, amore.â
âYouâre lucky,â you say with a grin. âPayment is very cheap today.â
Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed âĄ

âsummary: bob loves you so much that he slowly begins to transform into a house-husband for you. and he loves it. âpairing: bob reynolds x female!avenger!reader âword count: 5k (wow) âcontent: ultimate husband material boss. pure fluff tbh, bob's insecurity and low self-esteem, his need to be loved and approved. he is literally starting to act like your house-husband. he wears an apron!!! you reassure him as he deserves. bucky is such a dad. love confessions, some intense make-out session but nothing more than that. bob loves the reader so much it's crazy.
writerâs note: english is not my mother tongue, so please forgive me if there is a grammatical error. hope you like it!
Bob.
He had been quite special since you had met him, really.Â
Yelena had told you that he liked you. Then Bucky had told you so too. And so had Ava. And Alexei. And John.
But how could Bob not like you, in all honesty? You'd been unnecessarily nice to him since you'd met. You didn't know him, he was a complete stranger, and yet you still showed him compassion and kindness. You stood by his side when you all together escaped the death trap that Valentina had set for you, and you defended him when Walker was getting especially mean to him.Â
How could anyone not like you? That was the real question. You were perfect. In every sense of the word. Both figurative and literal. From your soul to your mind. You seemed to be an angel fallen from heaven. Something ethereal, something crafted by his own mind, made in the most beautiful dreams.
Bob would normally think of himself as a big idiot, a loser. That he could never have you. A part of him insisted that never, not even in a million other universes could he ever deserve you. He wanted you as his lover or his friend? It didn't really matter, he just wanted you in his life.
And yet, he was flirting with you anyway. Or at least that's what he thought he was doing.
âHere,â he'd told you every morning since you'd set up at the tower as the New Avengers... you insisted that you all should think of a new name. In his hand he held a cup of coffee, your favorite coffee, and on his face there was a sheepish little smile, your favorite smile. His eyes held that softness all over, that slight, hardly visible gleam, that you could always see it anyway, always, you caught a glimpse of it. Every time he looked at you. As if stars were hung from your hands. Well, technically they did, due to your superpower, that is.
âThank you, Bobby,â you would say, offering him a warm smile, pronouncing that nickname so fondly and gently, that it had become a favorite nickname for his name. After so long hating it, after having caused him so much pain. Sure, now, his heart pounded when he heard it, his breathing quickened as well, but his chest swelled with tenderness. It was a good emotion, coming from a nice place. It didn't make him feel pain or sadness. Quite the opposite.
Bob was used to being an alien, isolated, left behind, to be hurt and broken. But you, you never left him behind. You always turned to look for him, to walk beside him, to gaze at him with those pretty eyes filled with concern and caring. You owed him nothing, you barely knew him, and yet, you were willing to walk in the void, in the darkness that concealed his heart and illuminate through with your light. You had saved him. And since then, you were his anchor.
You were patient. With his mood swings, his stuttering, his lack of confidence and his self-proclamation to inclination to ruin everything. He could never ruin you, you always assured him.
Love.
Bob had never even thought that he would ever have love in his life. That he would never truly grasp the concept of love, of loving. He didn't deserve it. He didn't deserve you.
You were the closest thing to love he will ever know. There was love in everything you did, in everything you said, in the way you called his name and in the way you looked at him.
He loved you.
âRelax, kid. You miss your Romeo that much?â Bucky blurted out in a tone that bordered near teasing, giving you an amused glance as you both walked over to the entrance of the Watchtower of the (New) Avengers, your home.
A mission had been assigned to the both of you as a duo. To locate the position of a small but potentially dangerous group of terrorists in the suburbs of New York city. There was an indication of where their base might have been. With your super senses it had been easy enough to just stumble upon it and with Bucky covering your back, you had arrested them all in less than twenty minutes.
It had been a successful mission. But the anxiety of being out in public had never really been something you could ignore, so the urge to go home was always lurking in the back of your mind.
To return to Bob, as well. Bob was a lingering thought in your mind now, an incessant remembrance. Something worth coming home safe and sound for.
âDrop it, Barnes,â you replied to your old friend, mumbling softly.
Bucky cracked a little chuckle, pressing the button to the top floors on the elevator once you were both inside. You could feel his intent gaze on your face and you could also sense all that he was trying to talk to you about.
âLook, I've never seen you like this before, okay? In all the years I've known you." He began to lecture you in a 'fraternal speech' mode, turning around so he could look at you, noticing how your cheeks were slightly flushed. âYou're happy. It's been months since I've seen you as happy as you are now. You've been smiling and laughing more, you even started playing the piano again. And that's good, sweetheart,â he offered you a small smile, completely sincere and gentle, âYou deserve to be, you know? Happy. You've been through a lot. And you have helped to protect this world longer than all of us. You deserve everything you want.â
You smiled back, but it soon twisted more into an apprehensive grimace, âYeah, I justââ you heaved a sigh of concern, sensing that Bucky wanted you to talk to him, not from the exterior, but from your inner self, about how you felt. âIt scares me....â
Bucky shook his head lightly, extending his flesh-and-blood hand to rest it on your shoulder, expressing sympathy. His fraternal demeanor always managed to make you feel comforted.
âIt's normal to feel fearâ then he cocked his head, narrowing his eyes as his face grew full of playfulness, âBut, sweetheart, have you seen him? He's the strongest guy currently on planet Earth. What I know is that anyone who would try to hurt him or you is the one who should be afraid. He almost wiped out all of us together at once. It was kind of humiliating...â
âThat wasn't himâ you immediately replied using a low tone, remembering how chaotic and painful that day had been. You had had to fight the Void, you were the strongest among all the others, after Bob of course.
âI know,â Bucky replied, sighing softly, âWhat I'm trying to say is that you both deserve to be happy. Shit, the guy looks at you as if the stars hung from your hands. You both deserve to have something to fight for and protect. How are you going to protect a place that has nothing to protect?â
âThat doesn't evenââ
Bucky rolled his eyes, clicking his tongue disapprovingly, âMakes sense, I knowââ he shook his head, frowning and gesturing with his hands in exaggerated fashion, âYou know what I mean, kid.â
âYeah... I knowâ you smiled softly at him, thoughtfully.
Once you had entered into your floor, you had gone straight to your room. You took off your suit, tossed it in the laundry basket, and then changed into more comfortable clothes.
You were combing your hair when you heard three soft knocks on your door. You didn't have to look to know who it was, you had already recognized his racing heartbeat from the moment he had turned around the corner.
âCome in!â you exclaimed, concentrating on combing your hair, letting it loose.
The door opened to reveal Bob. He was wearing a chef's apron, with an adorable cat pattern design. And his face was even more adorable. His cheeks were slightly flushed, his eyes were soft all over, and a sheepish smile graced his thin lips.Â
He was wearing that beanie again.Â
He had been wearing it for more than two days now, for some unknown reason, making it impossible for you to see his hair. It wasn't even cold in there, the building's heating system was perfect.
âHi,â he greeted you, raising his hand to wave at you with it, making you smile, âI cooked for youâ
He watched you put the hair comb on your vanity desk, his blue eyes fleetingly roaming over all of you.Â
Bob thought you always looked beautiful. In the suit or in a shirt of some really old band you'd never heard in your life. But the suit truly looked good on you. The colors were perfect and even though you said the cape was ridiculous and over the top, it made you look magnificent when you flew.
It was like a second skin, the fabric clinging tightly to your body, molding your curves so perfectly. He never thought he would be jealous of a piece of fabric.
Before he kept picturing you in your suit, he let his gaze wander across your room, falling on your record player, playing a Jeff Buckley song, from your favorite albums, he knew. Many times he had listened to it with you, sitting right there on the bed next to you.
His eyes then fell on the pair of small pictures you had on your nightstand next to your bed. In one of the pictures, he could see himself sleeping with his head resting on your shoulder, your self also sleeping on the couch, just having a Disney movie marathon. Alexei had taken the picture, of course, and you had begged him to give him a copy. Bob had also asked for one, keeping the picture next to his bed. It was a cute photo, you looked so cute in it.
âYou cooked for me, Bob?â you asked back, your face expressing the tenderness you felt inside. âAgain? You know you shouldn'tââ
He turned back to you and nodded his head, interrupting you, âI know you like tacos, you said so the other time. I thought you might like to eat them after the mission.â
Realizing you weren't saying a word back and just stared at him, he grew even more nervous under your powerful gaze, his fingers fidgeting at his sides and his gaze dropped to the floor, puffing out a small awkward chuckle.
âButâ uhâ if you don't want to eat them, it's okayâ you mustâ you must be tired. I don't think I cook very well eitherââ
âWhy are you wearing that beanie again?â you interrupted his rambling, genuinely confused.Â
You had noticed the way he was pulling the edges of the fabric down his forehead, preventing any strands of his hair from slipping out and being seen.
âUh?â he stammered, his brow furrowing slightly, âOh, this? It's nothing, it's justââ he gestured with his hands anxiously, making it impossible for him to look you directly in the eye, âIt's a bit chilly in here. I don't want to catch a cold.â
You sighed softly, looking at him with concerned eyes, âBobby, I can literally sense you're lying to me.â You then slightly shook your head, âYou can't catch a cold since Project Sentry, honey. And it's almost twenty degrees in here.â
He shifted his body weight down between his two feet, still staring at the ground, resembling a child who was being scolded. When he eventually looked up from the floor, his eyes held a dull, sad look.
âIt's just...â
This time he interrupted himself, growing quiet and letting the silence carry his words away. It took him a few moments to reflect on an answer for you, sorting through the words and phrases that were rushing through his head.
You waited so patiently for him. As always.
âThe bleach is wearing off and I have a horrible mix of colors. My hair is just a mess now,â he was finally able to express, motioning with his hands, in some way to detract from what he was talking about, but you could see beyond that. You understood that this was something important to him, something that had been troubling him.
You patted the bed, sitting down on it and inviting him to sit down as well, âCome here, Bobby."Â
He obeyed you, of course, making his way to your bed, awkwardly tripping over his own feet on the path.
Once he was seated next to you, he made an effort to maintain eye contact with you, but just couldn't, casting his eyes down to his lap, where his hands were fidgeting, revealing sheer nervousness and anxiety.
âYou don't want to be seen with your brown hair?â you asked him in a soft tone, intending to seek his gaze and attempting as well to let him allow you to let you see beyond his mask and beyond what he usually pretended to be. âI like your natural hair color.â
âBrown?â he questioned back, appearing genuinely troubled, even more gloomy now. His brow was furrowed and his voice wavered into disbelief, âBut it's so.... lame.â
âLet me seeâ you pleaded and Bob immediately gave in, sighing shakily before raising his hands to his head, tugging the cap off and allowing you to see the, as he put it, mess that was his hair. But it wasn't at all.
Sure, the ends were still affected by the bleach, they were mainly burned and dehydrated, and now most of his hair was brown, gradually returning to its natural color. A couple of wavy strands fell on his forehead, contrasting so beautifully with the color of his skin.
Bob looked embarrassed now. Still gazing down at his lap, his hands clenching the beanie between his fingers. He was expecting you to make fun of him, to make some joking remark about how ugly his hair was or how ridiculous he was for even giving so much thought to how it looked in the first place.
But you, you just offered him a gentle smile. And then your hand ran down the side of his head, picking up a brown lock and brushing it back away from his forehead. That's when he finally looked back up at you, awestruck.
âYour hair is so pretty just the way it is, Bobâ you began to tell him and your voice delivered so much reassurance and comfort, it was so soothing. The way you pronounced his name made him feel his heart flip in his chest. âYou don't need to change anything about it. You don't have to prove anything. You're not him.â
âI know,â he whispered, holding your gaze, pressing his face against the palm of your hand, clawing desperately for your touch. He didn't want to beg. He didn't have to. He knew you could feel it, his longing, the aching, the need for love, for your love. âI just thought that.... well, they all said that blond was better, to be the Sentry, to look stronger andâ andâ and attractive. I thought, that way you'd like me betterâblond, I mean.â
âDoes the opinion of others matter much to you?â
Bob shook his head, just barely, so as to avoid under any circumstances straying far out of your hand, and then murmured, shyly, âOnly yours.â
âI like you in any way, Bobâ you replied, assuring him, and when he placed a kiss on the palm of your hand, you felt your heart halt, âEvery side of you. The good side, the bad side. I like you. All of you.â
Bob swallowed saliva, parting his lips to let out a soft shaky sigh, âWith you it's only the good side. You bring out the best in me.â
âCan I kiss you?â you even had the audacity to ask. When he was looking at you like that, as if you were the most precious creature in the entire universe. When you had never felt or known love as pure as the love Bob was extending to you through his mere gaze.
âYâyes, pâpleaseâ he begged.
You kissed him.Â
And the world stopped. All the noise muffled around him, the voices whispering that he'd made a mistake once again hushed. The darkness was succumbing to the light. Your light.
His lips followed yours like an instinct, like something they had been used to in another life, in another universe. Like picking up an old habit. Like second nature, his hands landed on your waist, a tentative but yearning touch.
Your mouth connected with his like old pieces of a puzzle finally coming together, fitting as if they were made for each other. Now, everything seemed to make sense, the whole universe, all the pain, all the suffering, all the mistakes, everything that had brought you there, to that very moment.
âYou're everything I've dreamed ofâ he whispered against your lips once the kiss was over, still with his eyes closed, like it was all a dream, if he dared to open them, you would disappear from his arms. So he held you close, pulling you desperately against him.
You kissed him again.Â
Eventually Bob opened his eyes and they instantly softened as they found yours looking back at them. It wasn't a dream, no. It was reality. This was really happening.
He had kissed you- well, you had kissed him. But you were there, in his arms, his hands molding the curve of your waist as if they were made to hold you. All of a sudden, he realized he wasn't really meant to be anyone in this life, not some superhero, some weapon, some asset, no, Bob was meant for you. He was made to be yours.Â
His hands were not made to destroy, they were made to hold you. To protect you.
His whole being was made to love you.
Bob loved you.
âCan I kiss you again?â he asks, his eyes lowering from yours to your lips again, and again, and again....
His fingers caressed your hips, nudging your bare skin below the hem of your shirt, and the very touch sent shivers down your spine.
âDon't hesitate, just kiss meâ you assured him back in a whisper and he savored the breath of your utterance, kissing you again, most passionately this time.Â
Your hands embraced his neck and you pulled him close to you, leaning back against one of the many pillows on your bed. He kept kissing you, like a starving man, careful not to crush you with his weight, one of his hands rested on the side of your body against the bed.
His hair brushed against your face, tickling you.
âI'm bad at this, I'm sorryââ he suddenly apologized, as if he just was coming back down to the ground and snapping back to reality, detaching himself from you, only barely, just enough to be able to look at you. Above you he looked like a god. Looking down at you with those eyes, darkened by love and longing. His face was all red and his pupils dilated. Up close, you could distinguish the tiny greenish shades within all the light blue of his orbs. âI haven't kissed anyone inâ God, I can't even rememberâ I'm sorry.â
âHey, it's okayâ you tried to reassure him, looking up at him with doting, soft eyes. He took the moment to just admire you, his lips parted, reddened from all the kissing. âMe neither.â
âWhat?â Bob displayed his incredulity at your words, his brow furrowing faintly, barely a hint of a smile tugging at his mouth. His unoccupied hand trailed up your body, tracing your curves, all the way to your jaw, his fingers fondly caressing your skin, looking down at you with adoration, not even missing a chance to marvel at you to blink, âThat makes no senseâ You're a good kisser. The best kisser.â
Now it was your turn to blush, shifting your gaze down to his chest, avoiding his, feeling flushed and really hot all of a sudden. But Bob didn't let you stray too far from him, as he kept his hand on your chin, lifting your face so he could gaze directly into your eyes.
âDon't look at me like thatâ you pleaded in a quiet whisper, locking your gaze with his again. The blue of his eyes sparkled in reflection of yours, all threatening to surround you entirely and pull you into the serene indigo sea they held within them.
Bob soaked his lips with his tongue, catching a glimpse of your gaze dropping to them for just a second. His finger nuzzled up against your cheek, tracing a tender caressing line across your skin. The touch struck an earthquake inside you and your heart thumped unquietly in your chest, menacing to leap out to join his.
âI always look at you like this,â he uttered your name as if it were his own religion, âYou are so pretty...â
You are incomparable in his eyes. His love for you is unconditional, even on bad days. His loyalty relies on you blindly, unbreakable.
âYâyou make me happyâ he murmured after a comfortable and serene silence, full of emotions, good emotions. âI'd forgotten what that felt like. But you gave it to me again. Happiness. Belonging. Love.â He breathed out a chuckle, appearing incredulous, âGod, I even started cooking. I mean, wâwhen had I ever done that?â
You kissed him again, devastatingly gentle, tender, loving, just the way you always addressed him and only him.Â
And he drank in everything you gave him, every kiss, every caress and every touch, as if you were the reason he existed, the reason he breathed.
He breathed out a raspy whimper against your lips when you pulled his hair at the nape of his neck, your fingers sinking through the brown locks, pressing him closer to you.
âDo that again, pleaseâ Bob pleaded in a husky whisper, in between kisses, nearly in despair, breathing out in a cracked voice.
You tugged on his hair once more and Bob's voice broke into a groan, his eyes squinting, gazing into yours as if they were the center of the universe.
âCan I touch you?â you asked him before kissing his lips once more and you could almost feel him vibrate against you as he nodded his head in a frenzy.
He kissed you again, uttering your name like a prayer, âPlease touch me, do whatever you want to me, but don't ever stop touching me.â
You breathed out a little giggle as when you realized that he was in fact wearing an apron. He looked so cute in it.
âThe apron looks good on you.â he blushed furiously at your words, if it was even more possible. His skin was now crimson, as red as a tomato. âYou would be a fine house husbandâ
The lights in your room flickered just as you pronounced the words, and you knew it had been him. So powerful, so strong, yet he was melting apart under your touch, completely at your mercy.
His skin was warm, it felt like porcelain under your touch.
The lights faded in and out again.
âI'm d-doing okay?â Bob asked, his hands settled on your hips, digits sinking into the fabric of your shorts. His lips quivered, forming a hint of a nervous smile, looking down at you, searching for your approval,
âYou're perfect, babyâ you assured him, kissing his chest one last time before beginning to make a path of kisses through all his face, making him smile.
âPerfect, perfect, perfectâ you murmured several times against his warm skin.
Bob gasped shakily, his hands groping as much of you as they could, slipping under the thin fabric of your shirt, âFuck-- you drive me crazy. You're so pretty, so good to me... You make me so happy, babyâ
And then you hugged him, pressing him against you close, impossibly close. He carefully rolled you both over on the bed, with him now under you, so that he could hold your whole body, feel your full weight pressed against his. Â
Your eyes filled with tears at his statement, fully understanding that it was difficult for him to express his emotions, to say out loud what he was feeling and what was going on inside his head. But anyway, he had done all that for you.
âYou make me happy tooâ you whispered to him, reassured him, promised him back. He hugged you tightly, snuggling close to you, locking his body to yours.
Bob placed a tentative but loving kiss on your shoulder just as you were pulling away from him, gently tugging on his shoulders to make him sit up on the bed as well, in front of you, with your legs entangled.
âYou must be tired. Your mission went well?â he asked curiously, releasing one of your hands to run it up the side of your face and you pressed it against his palm as an instinct, closing your eyes and letting yourself feel the warmth and reassurance his touch provided, âI missed feeling you here.â
He was looking at you in awe. The way you pressed yourself against his hand, the same hand that had hurt so many people, that had caused so much pain and destruction. And now it was holding your face as if it were the whole world.
âFeeling me?â you raised your eyebrows, tone of voice growing teasing.
Bob blushed, and let go of your hand to pass it through his hair, âYâyour presence, your heartbeat, your breathing, yâyou know.â
âMy heartbeat?â you asked him another question just to tease him.
He became even more nervous, his hand returned to yours, interlacing his fingers with yours and giving you a gentle squeeze, asking for silent mercy, but you looked at him attentively with a smirk, âAll I can think about is you, hâhonestly.â he watched as your smile quivered with his words, âYou're everywhere. I just... feel you.â
He left you speechless once again, looking up at him, holding your breath.
âI'm sorryâI'm just saying what comes to mindâ Bob rushed to apologize once again, lowering his gaze to your joined hands, feeling your warmth engulf him all over, as your thumb stroked his knuckles soothingly. His own thumb traced your cheekbone as if he were brushing the most magnificent shape in the world. You were. In his eyes. âI'm not being polite right now. It's nothingââ
âBob,â you called his name, interrupting him and causing him to look up at you, both of your hands going to cup his face. He fell silent, gawking at you, in utter awe, roaming his eyes over every inch of your face, intending to remember every single detail, every fragment of your complexion, âYou're everything. Everything.â
His eyes glistened, crystallizing with a couple of tears, not out of sadness or pain, no, they were from happiness, from feeling complete, from feeling that he finally belonged somewhere. By your side.
âThank youâ he then breathed a few times, kissing the palms of your hands pressed against his face, cupping them with his own.
Your fingers caught a lock of his hair that had fallen over his face, brushing it back once again.
âI like it better this wayâ you commented, smiling sweetly.
âYeah?â he asked gently, so happy he could leap.
You nodded your head, humming approvingly, âBlond looks good on you too. But I met you with brown hair, so I like you better that way.â
Bob kissed the palm of your hand once more, looking at you tenderly, âYou met me at my worst.â
âWe all have bad days, Bobby,â you murmured, trying to reassure him, âYou've been through so much. And you're still here, still standing. You're so strongâ
âThanks to you,â he replied and hurried to add, blushing, âAnd to the othersâ of course. Anyway, you must be hungry. Your stomach is growling.â
He took your hand, and waited for you to put on your shark slippers, still blushing. Then he led you out of your room, 'Lover, you should've come over' playing from your record player as you closed the door behind you. You smiled affectionately, walking beside him.
But your smile was washed off your face once you passed through the threshold of the kitchen, encountering Alexei and John, devouring the tacos that Bob had cooked, especially for you.
Seeing you appear in the kitchen, with both of you looking absolutely terrorized, Alexei took a big sip of his beer, raising his eyebrows, âWhat happened to you, kids?â
John, sitting next to him, burped, just finishing munching on the last remaining taco, âThese were really good.â he wiped his mouth with a napkin and made his way towards the kitchen doorway, patting Bob's shoulder as he passed by him, âThanks, Bobby.â
Alexei nodded his head enthusiastically, showing agreement, following John, with his half-drunk beer in his hand, âYou should be the team cook.â
You turned your face toward Bob, who was staring at the plate, now empty of tacos, with a frown on his face and a small pout curving his lips.
You gave his hand a squeeze, tugging him to walk into the kitchen with you.
âCome on, honey, we can do more tacosâ you tried to encourage him, holding back the urge to laugh at the sight of his face all pouty.
âI hope they don't have sex in the kitchen, that would be grossâ you heard John say to Alexei with your super hearing.
âI heard that!â you exclaimed, looking toward the open kitchen door.
Then you heard Alexei's guffaw as you turned to look at Bob, pouty and blushing now.

This was a bad idea. Truly one of the worst ones you had come up with in recent timesâ which was saying something when you stopped to consider all the stupid shit youâd gotten yourself into since starting at Hogwarts. But this was a decision born of desperation, and one that you adamantly refused to go back on.Â
Not that you could, realistically. You were already here.Â
The Gaunt Estate was massive. It was an imposing structure, shrouded in a perpetual darkness that seemed to kill off even the tiniest slivers of light, and youâd noted the distinctly foul scent of dark magic that encased the mansion from roughly a mile away. There were no Floo Flames to utilize for travel, so youâd been forced to apparate to Great Hangleton and walk the remaining six miles to reach your destination. This was your first time setting foot anywhere near Ominisâ childhood home, and the threat of splinching yourself by apparating to an unfamiliar location was a very legitimate concern.Â
You almost wished youâd taken the gamble, if only to spare yourself the harrowing journey on foot.Â
Ominis had to already be inside the manor, having left long before you decided you would follow him to essentially eavesdrop on his meeting with his family. You had never seen him so agitated in the hours leading up to his departure, and it was entirely due to the letter heâd received from his father. What it had said, you didnât know, but you knew Ominis well enough to figure out that it wasnât anything good. His entire demeanor had changed upon reading the apparent summons, but he wouldnât tell you a lick of what it was about. Heâd promised to return home as soon as he was able and left without so much as a goodbye kiss.Â
The memory only reinforced the fact that this was a really bad idea. What the hell were you thinking?Â
Now that you were actually here, you had no clue how to go about your poorly thought out plan. Going inside had always been the goal, but now that you were face to face with the blood-chilling building, you found yourself hesitating. Something told you that getting out would be a lot harder than getting in. You didnât even know where Ominis could be, especially if the interior was as gargantuan as the exterior. Getting lostâ or Merlin forbid, caught and torturedâ seemed like the most plausible outcome.Â
It was as the saying went; curiosity killed the cat. You seriously hoped you wouldnât end up dead as a result of your inquisitiveness.Â
Forcing one foot in front of the other, you started down the gravel path towards the arched double doors with your wand in hand. Your anxiety was like a physical entity hiding within your chest, but you smothered it beneath the overwhelming desire to ensure that Ominis was okay. While you knew he could handle himself, his familyâs reputation preceded them, and youâd feared the worst earlier when you had borne witness to his expression shifting into something far more sinister than you were accustomed to.Â
You cast a disillusionment charm for extra measure before giving the handle a testing twist, relieved to find that the door was unlocked. It wouldnât surprise you if there were other safeguards in place that you were unaware of, but pressing on despite that unknown possibility was a risk you were willing to take. You opened the door a crackâ just enough for you to squeeze through before quickly shutting it behind youâ and you were instantly encased in suffocating darkness.Â
The windows that lined the walls were evidently just for show.Â
It smelled distinctly old inside, as though there had never been a time when the mansion wasnât inhabited. The wooden columns that lined the entryway were cracked and worn, stretching all the way towards the vaulted ceilings before disappearing into the inky shadows high above. There was a striking amount of antique looking decor that lined the walls; from suits of armor, to ornate vases perched atop mahogany tables. Straight across from the front door was a giant portrait of what could only be the Gaunt family.
Ominis was nowhere to be found in it.Â
The sound of distant, unintelligible voices echoed throughout the vast foyer from somewhere deeper in the house, drawing your attention and making the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. Your eyes scanned the room once more before you were furtively moving further into the room in the direction of the noise.Â
Following the sound of the voices brought you to a giant oak doorwayâ a mere fraction of the size of the main entrance, but still obscenely large. From within you could hear a man you didnât recognize, his throaty timbre one that seemed to command attention, and you couldnât suppress the shiver that danced down your spine. Nothing about his tone sounded pleasant.Â
âItâs been put off long enough,â you heard the man say as you sidled up directly against the door, careful not to lean on it too much and risk shoving it open. âWe entertained your rebelliousness while you were at school, but Apollonia has anticipated this union for years now. It will happen. Whether youâre a willing participant, however, is up to you.â
âYou already know my stance on the matter.â Ominis. âIâd sooner dig my own grave before I let you marry me off to that deplorable woman. Sheâs psychoticââÂ
âA non-issue,â interjected the older voice.Â
âPerhaps itâs irrelevant to you, but not to me,â Ominis snapped. You hardly recognized the threatening lilt in his voice; he sounded thoroughly fed up with the discussion, and you briefly wondered how long heâd been going at it with the unknown man. âSheâs utterly wicked. Moreover sheâs family. Have you forgotten my opposition to these incestuous relations you continue to shove down my throat?âÂ
At this point, you were almost positive the deeper voice belonged to Ominisâ father. You knew next to nothing about the man, other than the fact that Ominis loathed him with his entire being. Before you could delve further into your thoughts, a distinctly feminine voice filtered through the thin slit in the doorway, sounding colder than ice.Â
âAleister, give it a rest. If he wants to be dragged to the altar instead of walking down it, then so be it.âÂ
Ominisâ laugh was crass and devoid of any genuine humor, and you could practically hear the sneer in his rebuttal. âBold of you to assume Iâll let myself be dragged anywhere. Try it and see what happens.âÂ
âI just donât understand why youâre so opposed to this,â the woman continued as though he hadnât even spoken. âYou never used to fight us to this extentâ youâve always known what was expected of you as a Gaunt. Does that girl from Hogwarts have anything to do with this?âÂ
Your entire body went rigid at the mention of yourself, and a tense silence descended over the room. It was suddenly so quiet that you were certain you could hear a pin dropâ but in this case the lack of sound allowed you to pick up on something shifting across the floorboards closer to you. You had barely glanced over your shoulder before you were jumping away from the door with your heart hammering in your chest.Â
The biggest snake youâd ever seen in your life was slithering across the floor, its iridescent scales somehow reflecting the nonexistent light within the hallway. Your eyes went wider than saucers as you stepped away as much as you could, silently backing yourself into the tiny alcove beside the doorway in a bid to remain undetectedâ because if there was one thing the wizarding world had taught you, it was that beasts of any kind were far more intelligent than they were given credit for. The snakeâs long, forked tongue flicked out incessantly as it made its way towards the doors, but it stopped short of the entryway to pivot its massive head in your direction.Â
It was looking right at you.Â
Fuck.
Your body tensed in anticipation of the worst; maybe it was venomous and youâd die quickly, or maybe it was more inclined to strangle the life out of you before depositing your corpse in front of Ominis and his parents. The thought made your stomach churn, and your eyes flicked down to confirm that yesâ the disillusionment charm was still workingâ but that didnât seem to matter where the reptile was concerned, and you mentally chided yourself for ever having let your curiosity get the better of you.Â
The conversation on the other side of the door continued as your staring contest with the snake pressed on. âThat girl is none of your concern. If you know whatâs good for you, youâll refrain from speaking to me about her.âÂ
âOminis,â Aleister admonished with a rough voice. âDonât you dare speak to your mother that way. Such hostility for some witch we know nothing aboutâ perhaps itâs time to rid you of her influence once and for all. Sheâs proving to be a greater distraction than I had anticipated.â
Your eyes stayed glued to the snakeâs, but your blood ran cold.Â
âOver my dead body. If you so much as look at herââ
âThat can be arranged. No son of mine will be consorting with some harlot of unknown blood purity. Youâd be better off in the graveââÂ
âAleister!â Ominisâ mother yelled, silencing the back and forth bickering instantaneously, and you found the willpower to shift your feet sideways so you could better make a break for the front door.
There was another flick of the creatureâs tongue as it blatantly scented your presence, but it made no move to inch closer to you. While you were grateful to still be breathing, you were also deeply, irrevocably afraid, and you came to the resolute decision that it was time to get the hell out of there.Â
You moved out of the alcove slowly while maintaining what you deemed to be a safe enough distance from the snake, and all the while its thin, slitted pupils followed your movements. The blasted thing had an awareness to it that sent shivers down your spine, overwhelming you with the urge to run and get away, but vigilance was key. It wasnât poised to strike, but that just made you even more nervous.Â
Why wasnât it attacking you?Â
You adamantly refused to turn your back on the reptile, so you kept your front to it as you skirted the edge of the wall in the direction of the entrance. The discussion between Ominis and his parents was muffled nowâ their voices distinctly lower after his mother had cut off their argument with her biting toneâ but you no longer cared to listen in. You craved safety, and nothing about the Gaunt household offered that.Â
As you came upon the final stretch of the hallway, the snake flicked out its tongue once more before it was turning around to begin slithering towards you, and the remnants of your bravery evaporated. Fear overtook you, and the disillusionment charm that had shrouded you in transparency fell away as you pivoted and bolted around the corner. A chill-inducing hiss echoed from down the corridorâ the first real sound youâd heard the animal makeâ and it only served to propel you towards the exit even faster.
The gargantuan double-doors swam into view, and just as you were reaching out to curl your fingers around the handle, a strong arm was coiling around your waist and hauling you backwards with enough force to give you whiplash. A startled, pained yelp was expelled from your lungs as you were slammed into the wall beside the doors, and your hip connected painfully with a tiny side table that careened against the floor. The vase that had been perched atop it shattered loudly, the ceramic pieces scattering across the tile, but you barely got the chance to gauge the extent of the damage before an unfamiliar face was blocking your sight.Â
âWell well well, just look at what the cat dragged in. Get lost on your way home, doll?â Â
It took a second for the statement to register, but once it had, you were craning your head back to glare boldly at the arrogant sounding man. His tawny eyes were narrowed down at you in amusement, his thick forearm pinned horizontally across your chest to restrain you firmly in place between himself and the wall, and the predatory look in his gaze had your stomach sinking into your feet. Everything about him screamed dangerous; from the unruly hair that curled around his temples to the animalistic way he bared his teeth at youâ there wasnât a doubt in your mind that the man would kill you if he deemed it acceptable. You cursed yourself silently for having put yourself in such a predicament in the first place.Â
The imposing man cocked his head to the side coyly as he teased, âI hardly think I deserve such a cruel expression when youâre the one sleuthing around my house uninvited.â
Your mouth opened and shut a few times before you managed to stammer out, âI-I wasnâtââÂ
âDonât deny it,â he cut you off quickly. âWhat other reason would Ominisâ little plaything have for being here? I sincerely doubt the house-elves held the door open for you.âÂ
The term âplaythingâ made you scowl, distracting you from the fact that the man even knew who you were, and you brazenly planted your hands against his firm chest to shove him away. It was like pushing against an immovable boulder. âIâm not his plaything, you pratââ
His free hand shot up in a flash to grip the sides of your jaw painfully, the look on his face darkening tenfold as he growled, âCareful now, Iâd hate to lose my temper and take away my brotherâs pet.â The fingers splayed under your face tightened a fraction as the crazed man angled your head to the side, shamelessly pressing his nose against the sensitive skin of your throat before he inhaled deeply. You shuddered uncomfortably at the contact. âAlthough Iâm beginning to understand his infatuation a bit. You smell⌠different. What is that, exactly?âÂ
You had no fucking clue what he was referring to, nor did you care to find out. Each passing second brought the towering man closer into your personal space, and when one of his legs started to weasel its way in-between yours, you found yourself attempting to writhe out of his ironclad grip. âLet go of me,â you demanded in a low voice, doing your best to keep your words steady and hide the rampant unease in your tone.Â
âAnswer my question,â he countered easily. âOr Iâll snap your scrawny neck and be done with it. Makes no difference to me whether you live or dieââÂ
âIf you have any desire to keep those slimy hands of yours, youâll remove them this instant, Marvolo.âÂ
Your eyes widened at the sound of Ominisâ booming voice echoing throughout the foyer, which had the elder Gaunt smiling wickedly at you. He didnât bother turning around, opting to stay right where he was and drop his fingers lower so he could squeeze around your windpipe, and you knew your choked gasp reached Ominisâ ears when he swore viciously and began walking closer.Â
âDid I stutter? I said to unhand her, you cretin.â
Marvolo tutted disapprovingly, angling his head to the side so he could better keep track of Ominis coming up behind him, but he kept his eyes glued to yours all the while. âCome now, Ominis. You know how I feel about rats, and she was certainly scurrying around like one.â
You finally caught sight of the blond over Marvoloâs shoulder, and the look on his face was downright murderous. His dark, expressive brows were slammed down atop his milky-blue irises, and his pursed lips contorted into a scowl as he leveled his wand with the back of the taller manâs head. Ominis continued to side-step closer, moving with the prowess of a wolf stalking its prey, and to your immense satisfaction Marvolo broke eye contact with you to fix his gaze on his brother.Â
Maybe you were imagining it, but you could have sworn he looked wary.Â
âLast chance,â Ominis grit out through his clenched teeth. âLet her go. Or youâll be nothing more than a stain on the floor.âÂ
The sharp laugh Marvolo let slip past his lips was positively wicked, and Ominisâ threat only served to motivate his brother into tightening his hand around your throat. Stars danced in the corners of your eyes then, and your own hand shot up to grip at the manâs thick wrist in an attempt to pry his fingers away from your windpipe. Panic flooded your brain, your racing heart drowning out the sound of Ominisâ angry voice as your pulse thundered in your ears. Fight or flight was probably an appropriate way to describe what you were feeling, but Marvolo was making both options impossible to act on.Â
He wasnât listening to Ominis. He probably never would. You would have to get yourself out of this mess on your own.Â
Marvolo was barking out insults and threats over his shoulder, taunting Ominis into hurting him as he called his younger brotherâs bluff. You were able to school your nerves long enough to focus and dig deep inside of yourself in search of the magic you so rarely touched. Isidoraâs abilities were as much of an unknown now as they had been when youâd first absorbed them, but it was comparable to a living entity within you, and the phantom presence of her magic roared to life as you called upon it.Â
You felt the strange, darker magic crackle over your skin, and Marvoloâs head whipped back around to stare at you with his pupils blown wide. Whatever he saw reflected in your eyes was enough to spark alarm in his heart, and a sick, twisted part of you relished in the apprehension that washed over his features.Â
âWhat the fuck is that?â His hand around your throat loosened a fraction, but you werenât about to let him walk away from this unscathed. The arm that had been hanging limp at your side stretched out until your palm was directly against his chest, and you couldnât help but grimace when the red bolts of magic skirted across your forearm and blasted straight into his sternum.Â
Marvolo went flying with a barely there gruntâ his arms and legs flailing as he tried to find purchaseâ to no avail. He hit the stone floor and slid an additional ten feet or so until he came to rest just beside the corridor youâd run out of earlier, and your blood ran cold when an older, imposing man with salt-and-pepper hair stepped out from within the hallway. The look on his face was enough to spur you into action then, and you spared a quick, panicked glance at Ominis before you peeled off of the wall and threw the front door open.Â
The cool night air was like a slap to your face, sobering you up instantaneously and driving you to pump your legs harderâ fasterâ as you sprinted down the path that led to the dark forest surrounding the property. There was a bang from somewhere behind you and an animalistic sound you could only describe as a snarl, but you didnât dare look back. Not when it could potentially cost you dearly.Â
âMarvolo!â Ominis shouted, his voice angry and distant, but as the footsteps slapping against the gravel behind you got closer and closer, you realized it had to be him giving chase. Your heart hammered in your chest and in your earsâ drowning out the sound of the encroaching danger hot on your heelsâ but you knew there would be no outrunning Marvolo. That crazed look in his eyes youâd seen earlier told you everything you needed to know; he would pursue you to the end of the damn country on foot if need be, and you had no intention of getting caught to find out what he had planned for you.Â
Another growl sounded from over your shoulder, causing you to will your brain out of flight-mode and force your magic into action. It surged in your blood, coursing through your veins as you thought of homeâ of safety.Â
One second you were running, and in the next you had apparated. Marvoloâs hand came down on empty air, his heels digging into the ground as he skidded to a stop and realized what had happened. You were already long gone, but his rage-filled roar shook the foundation of the manor, somehow echoing in your ears as you collapsed to your knees in the center of your living room.Â
***
Your eyes stung as the steam from the bath wafted up into your face, your gaze never straying from the surface of the water. It had been nearly two hours since your narrow escape from Ominisâ childhood home and you had been in the tub for the majority of itâ calming your frayed nerves and racing heart with deep breaths that did little to quell the anxiety that still riddled you. The hot water had been charmed back to scalding temperatures twice now, having gone cold multiple times already as you sat with your knees curled against your chest and replayed every second of your fortuitous run-in with Marvolo Gaunt.Â
The ache in your hip throbbed to life every time you thought back to the primal glint that had flashed in Marvoloâs eyes as heâd thrown you into that table. What had started as a tender red spot on your side had transformed into a nasty, colossal bruise, stark and obvious against your bare skin. You hadnât been able to so much as glance at the finger shaped bruises that wrapped around your neck without feeling nauseous.Â
Youâd made a mistake in following Ominisâ that much was certain.Â
The man in question had yet to return home, and as a result, the seemingly bottomless pit of unease in your chest only worsened. Part of you was ashamed for having left him alone to face his familyâs scrutiny after literally breaking and entering, but you knew he wouldnât have had it any other way. There wasnât a doubt in your mind that he would have found a way to get you out as quickly as possible if you hadnât done so yourself.Â
Still, you worried.Â
Another fifteen minutes passed without a sound from within the house, and you dimly registered that the water had gone cold once more. You were half tempted to heat it up again and spend the remainder of the night turning yourself into a human-sized prune, but the ache in your back from staying curled up for so long diminished the idea quickly. Swiftly, you hoisted yourself out of the water, using the rim of the tub to steady yourself as you stood and began drying yourself off. Rivulets of water still cascaded down your body as you draped your robe over your shoulders, but you couldnât muster up the energy to care. Fatigue overtook you as you combed through your hair with your fingers and padded into your bedroom, and the second you laid down atop the sheets, your eyes were drifting shut.Â
You had no idea how long you slept before the distinct feeling of the mattress dipping roused you from your light slumber. The room was cloaked in darkness, save for the pulsing, red glow that emanated from Ominisâ wand as he hovered it over you, and you slowly started to blink the fog from your eyes.Â
You had no clue how he realized you were awake, but his voice was unmistakably tight as he asked you, âWhere are you hurt?âÂ
It took your brain a second to fully register the question, and you propped yourself up on your elbow as your eyes adjusted to the dim light and muttered, âWhat?âÂ
âYou screamed,â he gritted through clenched teeth, and despite the low visibility in the room, you watched as his grip on his wand turned white knuckled. âI heard you earlier. You were in painâ I know itâs the truthâ so tell me now, where are you hurt?âÂ
On cue, the bruise on your hip throbbed to life, and you swiftly placed your hand on top of it while silently cursing yourself for not having brewed any Wiggenweld potions after returning home. Evidently your mind had been too jumbled to do the most logical thing following the altercation. âItâs not that badââ you started to say, but Ominis cut you off before you could downplay the injury any further.Â
âPlease,â he implored you, silencing you instantly with his pleading tone. âIâm trying to leave this up to you, but donât think for a second I wonât figure it out for myself if you donât tell me.â
Something about the desperate look on his face made you pause, and you took a moment to really take in the sight of him. He was paleâ far paler than normalâ and the way his brows furrowed told you that he was more anxious than you realized. His posture was still impeccable but less poisedâ closer to rigid. His shoulders barely moved, giving the illusion that he was hardly breathing, and you honestly werenât sure he was at this point.Â
In short, Ominis looked petrified.Â
Your lips formed a hard line as your gaze traversed his stiff form, swallowing thickly before you slid your hand away from your hip to reveal the dark purple blotch that decorated your side. âMy hip,â you murmured, afraid that if you spoke the truth too loudly, the tentative composure Ominis was keeping would vanish.Â
The muscle in his jaw ticked, and the hand he didnât have wrapped around the handle of his wand came to skim along your waist before hovering ever so slightly above the bruise. âWhere else?âÂ
âThis is the worst of the damageââ
âWhere else?â His voice was deeper and rougher than you were accustomed to hearing, and the notable difference had your stomach flipping over on itself. It left you feeling queasy, and you honestly couldnât tell if he was mad at you or at the situation as a whole.Â
ââŚMy neck,â you relented quietly, all too aware of the blatant anger that overtook Ominisâ face. âAt least I returned the favor,â you added quickly with a half-smile, trying to lessen the severity of the claim. It was a failed attempt, however, seeing as the man averted his unseeing gaze to the floor and shook his head minutely. Dimly, you watched as he waved his wand over his free hand, and a small vial of Wiggenweld appeared in the center of his palm before he wordlessly handed it to you. Given his tense demeanor, you opted not to say anything as you took it and removed the cork, then drank down the earthy contents graciously. The relief was instantaneous, and through the darkness of the room you managed to catch sight of the bruise on your hip fading away entirely.Â
Your tiny sigh of relief reached Ominisâ ears, and the tension in his shoulders seemed to dissipateâ albeit barely. âYou should never have gone there. Why would you set foot anywhere near that damnable house? Do you have any idea the kind of danger you put yourself inâ the kind of danger that youâre still in?â
At that, you finally pushed yourself up so you were sitting with your back against the pillows, setting aside the empty vial so you could clasp Ominisâ free hand in yours. His skin was cool to the touch, and you noted the miniscule tremors that emanated from him as you squeezed the appendage to will his attention back to you. âIâm sorry, Ominis. I was worried about youâ you were so upset before you left earlier and I was scared that your family would do something to you.âÂ
âOf course they want to do something to me. Theyâve tried puppeting me into a version of myself they can tolerate for my entire life, but itâs for that very reason that I can handle them. Iâve told you what theyâre likeâ how relentless they areâ and still you went there.â His head finally snapped back in your direction, and the expression on his face was one you were certain you would never forget; it was a mask of desperation, fear, and most notably, rage. âYou have no idea what youâve doneâ what it means now that theyâve seen you and what you can do.â
Youâd hadnât really done much of anything, aside from blasting Marvolo across the foyer before running for your life. Still, his words kindled a spark of fear in your chest, and your hold on his hand turned loose and clammy. âWhat are you talking about?âÂ
âBefore tonight, you were just an unknown witch Iâd been⌠âcavortingâ with, in my fatherâs eyes. Easy to get rid of should the need arise. Until earlier, they didnât believe you to be exceptionally powerful or particularly useful.â
The sudden dryness in your throat became painfully obvious. âUseful how?âÂ
âThe Gauntâs value power and authority over everything. Both things guarantee them the influence they need to further their own ends, and as unknown as your abilities are to them, they are undeniable. Theyâd be fools to ignore such a potent form of magic, and as much as I detest my family and their convoluted values, Iâll be the first to admit that they arenât stupid. They will find a way to make that power their ownâ blood purity be damnedâ and stealing you away and marrying you off to my brother would be their most likely course of action.â
Ominis practically spat the word, his teeth bared and eyes narrowed as murderous thoughts of his brother flew through his mind. Your own head was reeling at the revelation, nausea crashing over you as you thought back to Marvolo and the sadistic way heâd smiled as he tried choking the life out of you. Someone like that wouldnâtâ no, couldnât have a caring bone in their body. But you also knew that someone of his caliber was bound to be determined to get what he wanted, and if Ominis believed that his family now sought to obtain you for their own ends, Marvolo would do everything in his power to make it happen.Â
You had really, really fucked up.Â
Somewhere in-between thinking of Ominisâ brother and the sickening idea of being kidnapped, your breathing had kicked up dramatically. You didnât notice, but the blond man beside you certainly did. Ominis turned fully so his torso was angled towards you, feeling around the bed for your other hand before clasping your trembling limbs in his cooler ones, and your wide eyes flicked back up to meet his. âI wonât let them have you. Do you hear me? If they so much as glance at you, Iâll leave them wishing they had never set their sights on you.â
âYou canât know that,â you whispered, and your voice was unrecognizable to you. It was small and shaky, timid and so very, very afraid. âMarvolo isâ heâs a beast. Heâll kill you in a heartbeat, Ominis. Youâll die and it will be all my fault. I-Iâm sorry, Iâm so sorry, this is all my faultââÂ
In a flash, Ominis silenced you with a kiss. It took you by surprise, but it was far from an unwelcome oneâ especially when his wand bearing hand slid to the back of your neck to pull you impossibly closer towards him. You were pleased to discover that the skin there no longer throbbed with discomfort, the Wiggenweld potion heâd given you having done its job for all the bruises, not just the one on your hip. The revelation calmed you further, and before you knew it you were melting against the taller man, grabbing fistfulls of his shirt to cling to him desperately.
Ominis broke away momentarily to murmur against your parted lips, âNo one will ever take you from me, youâre mine.âÂ
Despite the circumstances that led the two of you to this moment, you found yourself enraptured by the possessive declaration, and you couldnât help but lean closer into the blondâs personal space until your hands were sandwiched between his chest and your breasts. Your mouth found his again, and you fervently bit at his bottom lip as you breathily whispered, âIâm yours, Ominis. Only yours.âÂ
Instantly, Ominis was pushing you back towards the headboard until your head knocked against the wooden frame, not once breaking the kiss as he positioned himself on top of you. His long legs came to cage your own against the mattress as he threw his wand to the edge of the bed, freeing both of his hands so he could plant them on either side of your face. Pulling away seemed physically difficult for him but he didnât stray far, opting to rest his forehead against yours and fix his hazy eyes directly on yours. How he knew where to aim his heady stare, you didnât know, but your toes curled at the ardent need for you that reflected in his blue irises.Â
âSay it again,â he implored you with a voice like pure sin.Â
âIâm yours,â you obliged him without missing a beat, and a sigh slipped past your lips as Ominis lowered his face to pepper featherlight kisses along your jaw and down the now unmarred column of your neck. Goosebumps broke out virtually all over your body when you felt one of his cool hands fall to the neckline of your robe, and as Ominis slowly tugged the material apart to expose your bare chest, he sank his teeth into the tender spot above your clavicle. The pain laced pleasure left you moaning his name in earnest, your voice steadily growing louder as his thumb came to graze over one of your nipples.Â
You felt the pressure from his teeth lessen as you arched into his touch, followed by his kiss-swollen lips latching over the bite to suck lightly. âAgain,â he breathed, continuing to work his searing brand into your flesh.Â
There were too many ways to describe his actions; primal, dominant, and greedy, to name a few. Yet there was a softness to his words that left your heart aching within your chestâ a tenderness that spoke volumes of the fear heâd felt upon realizing you had entered into that nest of vipers. He had nearly lost you tonight, and when the hand against your breast shifted down to curl around your waist, you realized he would never allow for it to happen again.Â
âIâm here, Ominis, Iâm right here,â you moaned, your reedy voice bouncing off the walls of the bedroom and causing the man above you to shudder. âIâm here and Iâm yours.âÂ
Before long, Ominis was moving back into your line of sight to capture your lips in another searing kiss. The hand on your waist traversed the bare expanse of your lower stomach before reaching your aching center, and you mindlessly wound your arms around his neck to tug him closer, bucking your hips into his hand as he slid a slender finger through your folds.Â
âMine,â he growled against your parted lips, and your next breath caught in your throat as he tentatively pushed the digit inside your wet heat. Your contented sigh filtered through Ominisâ hypersensitive ears as he pressed his finger in all the way to the knuckle, and the arm he supported himself with trembled minutely as he fought to control his baser urges.Â
After everything that had transpired tonight, he wanted nothing more than to bury himself deep in your cunt, desperate to feel you clamp down around his cock and suck him in further and further as he claimed you. He longed to mark you, brand you, consume you, in every possible wayâ his familyâs wishes be damned. He would make you his and his alone. Should any of his kin so much as attempt to interject, he vowed he would defend you until his last breathâ and then not even death would stop him. Ominis knew without a shadow of a doubt that he would defy the laws of nature if it meant keeping you safe from harm.Â
As you continued to rock your hips in time with Ominisâ hand, your legs spread apart of their own accord, silently beckoning him closer as you shivered under his dutiful ministrations. Ominis felt the movement and groaned in blatant appreciation, taking advantage of the newfound space to siddle down the bed and kneel comfortably between your legs, and all the while his finger continued to pump in and out of your wet heat languidly. He bestowed another toe-curling kiss upon your lips before breaking away to slide fully down the mattress, your heart stuttering in your chest as he moved low enough to settle between your quivering thighs. It was impossible to overlook the animalistic expression on Ominisâ face as he gazed in your directionâ following the sound of your barely there whimpersâ and your blood ignited in your veins at the sight.Â
All too eager, Ominis wasted little time in securing his grip around your waist with his free arm to better pull you harder onto his finger. The keening sound that slipped from your throat was replaced almost instantly by a guttural moan, drawn forth by the feeling of your loverâs lips latching around your clit to suck enthusiastically, and your head thunked against the headboard as wave after wave of sheer pleasure cascaded through you.Â
Your thighs absentmindedly clenched on either side of Ominisâ head as he shamelessly pulled your bundle of nerves into his mouth, the action accompanied by wet, perverted sounds that had damn near all the blood in your body rushing to your cheeks. âMerlin, Ominisâ fuckââÂ
Beyond a throaty growl, he said nothing. He simply tightened his hold on your waist, his other hand angling itself so he could better curl the finger inside of you, the combined sensations making your head positively spin. Entirely at his mercy, your hands flew to his soft, blond hair as you effectively surrendered to the pure bliss he granted you.Â
If you had been hot and wet already, Ominisâ mouth felt a thousand times more so as he torturously dragged his tongue up your cunt. He removed his finger from your clenching walls and replaced it with the wet muscle, wriggling it as much as he could as though he were desperate to lap up everything that escaped out of you. Your breathing hitched and your hips involuntarily bucked when his ministrations traveled higher towards your clit, and when he finally reached it, the tip of his tongue was slow and methodical as he pressed firm, torturous circles around the throbbing bundle.
Ordinarily, having Ominis appreciatively go down on you would have been the highlight of the night, but given his domineering persona at present, you knew you were just plain fucked now.Â
âOminis, please,â you managed to croak out. âIâm not going to last, Iâ ah!â You practically yelped when the tips of the manâs teeth raked along your inner thigh, nipping at the soft skin there hard enough for you to jolt.Â
âJust relax and let me work,â he muttered coolly, pressing a featherlight kiss to the spot heâd bitten as he dragged his hands down your abdomen to squeeze your tensing thighs.Â
Despite your best efforts, you were quickly losing your grip on anything other than the sensations Ominis was lavishing you with. You felt lightheaded as you attempted to release your tense muscles, struggling to do so as your lover devoured you with reckless abandon. His nose brushed against your clit as he slipped his tongue inside of you once more, the sound of his wet, suckling noises intermingling with your breathy whines as you felt your climax building higher and higher in your gut. You couldnât tell if your arousal was stemming from how Ominis enthusiastically used his tongue, lips, and teeth on you or if it came from the demanding way he directed you, but you decided that you didnât care; every feeling had burrowed deep inside of you and taken root in your mind.Â
You wanted moreâ no, needed more.Â
Head whacking back against the wooden bed frame, you needily tugged at the strands of his hair wrapped around your fingers as you pleaded, âPlease, Ominis, I need youâŚâÂ
Those five words did more to stroke his ego than you would ever know. Right now, Ominis needed you to need him. He wanted you to succumb to his ministrations and bend to his will, all to parry the baseless demands of his deranged family. There wasnât a chance in hell he would ever willingly hand you over to themâ much less to Marvoloâ and through your rapture-filled begging, he knew he had succeeded.Â
You were wholly and unequivocally his.Â
He pulled away for a moment to run his hands up your thighs, over your hips, then along the pebbled peaks of your breasts. The way you trembled at his touch told him everything he needed to know; you were hanging on by a thread, and he didnât need to see you in order to know you looked absolutely wrecked.Â
Unable to endure a second more of the teasing, Ominis raised himself up on his knees to remove his clothing. Swiftly and efficiently, he dexterously undid the catch of his trousers before shoving the constricting attire down his narrow hips. There was no stopping the sigh of relief that spilled through his clenched teeth as his cock finally sprung freeâ long, heavy, and leaking from the red, swollen tip. With his shirt disheveled, hair mussed, and pants haphazardly hanging below his hip bones, he was truly the picture of temptation. You stared up at him through hooded eyes as he stroked himself a few times, taking in the sight of your lover towering over you as you lay prone atop the sheets beneath him.Â
Once again, Ominisâ uncanny ability to feel your eyes on him surprised you, and a cheshire-like smirk blossomed across his face as he asked, âEnjoying the view?âÂ
âMore than you are, Iâd wager,â you retorted, and Ominis scoffed as his smug expression turned into one of amused disbelief. That mouth of yours was bound to land you in trouble one of these days.Â
âSmartass,â he murmured affectionately, keeping one hand on his shaft as the other reached down in search of your waist, squeezing the flesh there with a bruising strength that only served to intensify the ache between your legs. You aided him by wriggling down the sheets in order to press your ass against his bent knees, and Ominis lowered himself once more so the heavy weight of his cock rested against your spit-slick folds. It was hard for you to believe that the wild haired, smokey-eyed man kneeling between your legs was the same boy who had shyly walked with you to your classes all those years ago. Both of his hands pressed against your hips this time as he sat back on his heels, white teeth flashing as he aligned the head of his manhood against your entrance.Â
âAre you ready for me, darling?â Ominis asked, as though you hadnât been begging for this very outcome minutes before.Â
âYes,â you breathed out shakily, your hands twisting in the fabric of your long-abandoned bathrobe beneath you. âIâmââ
Despite his privileged upbringing, Ominis was a fan of the simple things in life. Good food, long walks during the warmer seasons, and the sound of your voice catching when he took you by surprise and slid inside you abruptly. In one fluid motion, he breached your walls, listening intently to your sharp intake of breath as he inched himself forward until his knees were under your rear and heâd bottomed out completely. The small whimper that slipped from your mouth had a deep, throaty chuckle escaping his, and his thumbs took to tracing encouraging circles against your hips as you clenched around him.Â
âIâm sure you are,â he purred in an infuriatingly sexy tone while you struggled to regain control over your breathing. Instantly, the dim embers of lust within you were rekindled, every inch of your body warm and borderline electric. Your hips writhed in Ominisâ hold in an attempt to wriggle closer, the unyielding grip he had on you coupled with the hungry expression on his face almost enough to make you come undone then and there.Â
âFuck, Ominisââ your words were cut short by a stifled moan as the blond slowly withdrew himself, arching back until only the tip of his cock was inside you before slamming his hips forward in one quick, sharp thrust. Your hands flew to his clothed knees as you dug your nails into the rumpled material of his trousers, desperate to touch every inch of him that you could but struggling to catch your breath in the midst of his slow, methodical thrusts.Â
Well, methodical at first.Â
You could feel Ominisâ acute desire for you with every pump of his hips, and a groan snaked its way out of his chest as he freed one of his hands to reach down and thumb over your clit. You hissed triumphantly through your teeth as you saw his expression slowly shift into something needier, his thrusts becoming less precise and more visceral. With how tight he was gripping you, you were positive the healed bruise from earlier would be replaced by long, finger shaped stripes, but you didnât care. If it was Ominis, it was fine. If it was him claiming you, branding you, consuming you, it was more than fine.Â
The blue-eyed incubus above you seemed to think similarly, if the low rumble in his chest was anything to go by. He was absolutely lost in the euphoria that came with being encased in your pulsing, tight heat, causing him to abandon his pretenses of control and give into his want for you with gusto. The hand he had on your sensitive bundle of nerves returned to grasp your waist, and even elevated as he was, he still had to thrust down into youâ shaking the headboard with every plunge as he effectively fucked you into the mattress.Â
The distinction was clear and evident in your mind as your legs came to wind around Ominisâ waist; the two of you had obviously been intimate before, and you had definitely made love before, but you had never been so carnally fucked like this a day in your life. It was hard to recall if Ominis had ever ravished you with such need in every stroke, enough so that you found yourself unable to control your shaking breaths or the volume of your voice. It was enrapturingâ getting caught up in the way he staked his claim on youâ so intent on fucking himself harder and deeper into you that his own husky murmurs of your name fell from his lips like a mantra.Â
Your inability to fight your moans and curses and feverish pleas for more was what Ominis lived for. The blond craved the sound of your voice like a drug, and he drew unparalleled strength from your vocal satisfaction. Maybe it had more to do with the events of the night than anything else, but hearing you cry his name and feeling you claw at the tops of his thighs made his chest swell with possessive affection, thrilled to hear you unwittingly proclaim that you were in fact his. No one else would ever have youâ no one else would ever find themselves lucky enough to have you reduced to such a state beneath them other than him.Â
âM-More,â you practically sobbed the request as Ominis gripped your hips tighter, dimly registering the thundering crack of the headboard banging against the wall. âMoreâ pleaseâ Iâm s-so closeââ
You asked for it with each breath expelled from your lungs, and Ominis would graciously give it to you. He couldnât have refused you any longer if he wanted to. âYou want to come, darling?â He panted, receiving only whimpering nods in return. âAsk.âÂ
âP-Please, please let me come, I canâtââ you gasped, squeezing your eyes shut as your teeth clenched together hard enough to make your jaw pop. You teetered on the brink of oblivion, waiting only on Ominisâ say-so to fall over the edge which seemed to loom so, so close.Â
âBeg,â Ominis rasped thickly, his fingers tightening and digging into the skin of your hips as he bucked harder against your ass. âBeg for itâ beg for me to let you come.âÂ
You couldnât even find the brainpower to realize he was demanding to hear you say it to fuel his unrepentant hold on you. The taunting, the pleasure laced brutalityâ it was all to assuage the bitter anger that had coursed through his veins upon hearing his family refer to you as tradeable cattle. Later on, he would be collected enough to reassure you that you were your own person, free to make your own decisions and go wherever your heart desired.Â
Right now though, his baser urges had won out, and he needed to hear you say it.Â
Your head slammed into the pillows as your back arched off the mattress, doing your best to shut out the mounting pleasure that threatened to break through your crumbling resolve. âPlease, Ominis! Please let meââ you hiccuped around another gasp, the ache in your gut bordering on unbearable. âL-Let me⌠let meâŚâ
One of his hands released your waist to feel up your torso and curl around the back of your neck, lifting your head off of the pillow so your eyes were on him as he uttered five words that struck something deep inside of you.Â
âThen come for me, love.âÂ
Your breaking point smacked into you hard and fast, leaving you equally breathless and brainless as your mouth fell open around a long, drawn out cry of Ominisâ name. Your climax ripped through you ferociously, your vision flashing white and your muscles tensing for a moment of near perfect silence as your lover continued to thrust in and out of you with unwavering focus. Even after youâd collapsed back against the sheets and gone limp in his arms, Ominis continued to chase his own finish, balancing precariously over you on his elbows and burying his face in the crook of your neck to muffle the shaky groans he failed to bite back.Â
Maybe you were imagining it, but you could have sworn he continued to murmur quiet declarations against your skin that sounded a lot like, âMine.âÂ
Before long, Ominis was following you over the edge with a throaty purr that slithered out of his throat. His arms trembled on either side of your head, his hands gathering fistfuls of the pillows as he buried himself completely inside of you with one final plunge of his hips. You heard the blond moan hoarsely in your ear as he spilled into you, grinding against your ass to milk every last drop of his seed from his twitching member, and when he mouthed wetly against the sweat-slick column of throat before biting down, all you could focus on was the warmth that filled you as you quivered under him.Â
After a few moments of the two of you panting softly, you lifted your hands to Ominisâ clothed back in a bid to usher him to the side. He tensed, however, and you paused as he wedged one of his arms under your back to hold you flush to him as he continued to re-center himself. âNot yet,â you heard him grumble into the hollow of your throat. âNot yet⌠give me a second.âÂ
ââŚAlright,â you relented quickly, only mildly concerned as you wrapped your arms around his slender shoulders. With your fingers tracing lazy shapes against his clothed back, you allowed yourself to enjoy the feeling of Ominisâ weight pressing down on you, his gentle exhales fanning against your clammy skin, and the steady rhythm of his heart beating against your sternum.Â
Given the severity of what had happened at his familyâs house, you werenât sure the two of you would ever get another moment like this again. So, you held on tightly to him in the hopes that the night would last just a little bit longer.Â
The two of you stayed like that for what seemed like hours but realistically could only have been a few minutes, and shortly after Ominis began peppering kisses up your throat and along your jaw, your eyes drifted shut as you dozed off once more. When you woke the following morning and found yourself tucked in beneath the sheets, you propped yourself up on your elbow to glance around the otherwise empty room, noting immediately that Ominis was nowhere to be found.Â
In a panicked flurry of movement, you threw off the blankets and were still tying your robe around your waist as you hurriedly shuffled down the hallway. Your dread was smothered in the next instant by overwhelming ease as you rounded the corner to find Ominis in the kitchen, gripping the countertop and working a muscle in his jaw while he hovered his wand over a letter that looked eerily similar to the one heâd received just a day ago.Â
Even though he could hear you approaching, he said nothing as you padded across the room to stand behind him, coiling your arms around his waist to press your front against his back. A shaky sigh escaped him, and you stared at the wall as you contemplated your words before deciding on, âWhat are you reading?âÂ
A pause, âA formal summons for you, inviting you to meet my family officially.âÂ
Your heart fell into your stomach, arms tightening around the taller man a fraction as you pursed your lips in blatant distaste. âWe wonât go,â you announced, and Ominis shifted in your embrace so he could wrap his arms around you to hug you back with a firmness that spoke volumes of his agreement.Â
âWe wonât,â he said. âBut we canât stay here, either. Not anymore.âÂ
âI know.âÂ
He buried his chin in the mess of hair atop your head, shamelessly inhaling your scent before he told you, âWe have to leaveâ go somewhere far awayâ and we canât tell anyone.âÂ
âI know.âÂ
The way his nimble fingers gripped the back of your robe told you of just how conflicted he was to ask this of youâ to uproot your shared lives here to flee the meddling of his family. His voice was laced with remorse as he asked, âAnd youâre okay with that? Truly?â
âI am,â and you really were. There wasnât a lick of hesitation in your voiceâ not a shred of apprehension hidden in your tone at the prospect of packing up and running as far from here as humanly possible. âSo long as weâre together, I am.âÂ
Ominis skimmed his hands up your back to cup your cheeks, angling your head up at him so he could kiss you fully, and you returned the gesture with equal fervor. As long as he was with you, you knew you could do anything. With Ominis by your side, you would fight tooth and nail against every hellish creature or person in existence to ensure your future together.Â
Wherever the two of you ended up, you already knew that your home wouldnât just be some place. It would always be him.

summary: even before you became fae, your favourite season was autumn. itâs a little hard to hide this when your least favourite newly appointed high lord has made it his lifeâs mission to be the most annoying male in your life.
a/n: not sure what this is but let me know if u want more lol
Youâd think that hiding behind the Spymaster of the Night Court, a literal Shadowsinger, would allow you to blend in well enough to go unnoticed.
The auburn silk of your dress is a near perfect match to the grandeur of the Autumn Court ballroom youâre unfortunate enough to have to be in, and you tell yourself that the attempt at camouflage is the reason you were so drawn to the colour.
When Rhysand approached you and the rest of the Inner Circle with the invitation of a ball thrown by Eris to celebrate his newly inherited title of High Lord, your sister Nesta had dragged you out to shop for new dresses. You were adamant to wear an old gown until the dress caught your eye, the gold beads glinting in the light, almost mimicking a gently burning fire. The deep orange hue of the silk slip was muted ever so slightly by the sheer overlay, cinching at the waist before cascading to the ground and the wisps of fabric around your legs gave the illusion of sparks every time you moved.
Nesta had made a comment about the dress being perfect for Autumn Court and you had to physically restrain yourself from grimacing. You just liked the colour. It didnât mean a thing.
Nesta and Feyre looked like perfect representatives of the Night Court and even Elain was donning soft shades of purple and blue tonight, a perfect embodiment of twilight. You loved your sisters, but you felt like you never quite fit in to the Night Court the way they had grown to. And you certainly felt like you stuck out like a sore thumb tonight.
Eris was definitely going to comment on the dress and you curse yourself internally, not having thought it through. He was jarring at the best of times, let alone a night that was solely dedicated to him. And you were dressed in the colours of his court.
You were extremely glad when Erisâ mother was the one to greet you all when you first entered the Autumn Court and not him. It allowed you to fully appreciate the beauty of his lands with unrestrained awe. Your sisters knew that Autumn had always been your favourite season, so the way you were so happy catching each falling leaf out of the sky was even more amusing to them considering they also knew how little patience you had for Eris.
Thatâs why you find yourself hiding behind Azrielâs wings tonight. As soon as you spot Eris making his way to greet Rhysand and Feyre, you sneak behind the Shadowsinger in an attempt to make yourself invisible.
âSeriously?â mutters the Illyrian, but he stays still for you all the same.
âKeep quiet,â you hiss, prodding him in the back. âYou know very well how much he targets me. Gods, I thought he hated Cassian, but I seriously give him a run for his money.â
Mor, overhearing you, snorts into her cup. She creeps up next to you, lowering her voice to match yours. âYou are so oblivious. He doesnât hate you. He wants-â
âMight I interrupt the riveting conversation that Iâm sure is going on behind the Shadowsingerâs wings?â you hear a voice drawl from in front. Your blood runs hot at being caught and you nearly burst into flames when Azriel starts to lower his wings, revealing you and Mor. She rolls her eyes at Erisâ attitude and walks away to talk to the pretty faerie in the green dress.
The years have softened the strained relationship between the Circle and Eris and none of them view him as a threat any longer. That doesnât mean they find him any less irritating though.
Eris smiles at you when you cross your arms and clench your jaw, already feeling impatience with him bubbling up inside of you. He glances down at your dress and his lips quirk up a little higher. âLooking stunning as ever, Y/N.â
The others have already dispersed, and even Rhysand and Feyre have started to garner the attention of other important people they need to talk to. As they start to leave however, Rhysand speaks to in your head. Let me know if heâs bothering you too much. Just⌠try not to throw a plate at his face this time, please.
You glare at the back of Rhysandâs head. That was one time.
He doesnât respond but you see his shoulders shaking with laughter for a millisecond before Feyre nudges him to behave in front of an Autumn Court official.
âTalking about me?â Eris asks, amused. You open your mouth to snap back at him, but notice the growing number of guests that are around the two of you now that the others have moved away. You bite your tongue for once. He is the High Lord now after all.
You plaster on a sweet smile. âOnly good things⌠High Lord.â
Eris raises his brows at that, but chooses not to comment. He holds out his hand instead. âDance with me.â
Youâre about to laugh in his face and tell him absolutely not, but his request has caught the attention of a couple guests and they nosily look over in what youâre sure they think is a subtle way. âIâm a little tired. Sorry,â you say through gritted teeth, still smiling.
âSurely youâre not going to deny me such a small request on tonight of all nights?â he says softly, part mocking and part pleading.
You know for a fact he wonât force you to dance, but if you deny him in front of the other guests, itâll undermine him and while you dislike him, youâre not that cruel. Plus, Feyre would probably have your head if you were to insult a High Lord in public. In private, she only ever laughs when you disparage him, but appearances are everything.
âOf course not,â you deadpan, reaching for his outstretched hand and trying not to react to the way the warmth radiating through his palm is warming your previously cold fingers.
He leads you into the crowd of dancing guests, placing his free hand on your waist as you rest yours on his shoulder, keeping a respectable distance. He rolls his eyes and tugs you forward so your chest is nearly flush against his own. When you glare at him, he merely smirks. âItâs a little hard for two people to dance when one of them is halfway across the room from the other.â
You hear a giggle from one of the guests near you and nearly whip around to glare at them. Eris catches the expression on his face and itâs as though he can read your mind with the way heâs holding back a grin. âMy apologies,â you mumble, before lowering your voice to a whisper that only he can hear. âSmartass.â
âI do so enjoy your pet names for me,â Eris teases, utterly unbothered. Every time you interact with him, you swear to yourself youâll keep a cool head. And every time, you fail. âI like your dress.â
You narrow your eyes at the compliment, but since he hasnât actually said anything insulting or with a double meaning like he usually does, you donât have anything to be annoyed about and begrudgingly accept the nice words. âThank you.â
âYou look ravishing in the colours of my court.â
You step on his foot.
He hisses in pain, but the grin doesnât leave his face when he sees that heâs succeeded in irritating you.
âI didnât choose the colours on purpose,â you say, defensively. âI just happened to like the dress.â
âYou know, you often happen to like Autumn colours,â he muses, expression turning thoughtful and not in a sarcastic way this time. âOr any colour that isnât of the Night Courtâs fashion. Tell me, do your sisters know how you long to find someplace you actually belong?â
Your stomach drops and you feel like youâve been doused in freezing cold water.
âI wasnât aware you were a Daemati, High Lord,â you say, scowling. Eris furrows his brows at the title and spins you out before bringing you back in, this time a little closer than before. âYouâre wrong.â
âStop calling me that,â he mutters, a hint of impertinence in his voice. It takes you by surprise since you assumed heâd be revelling in all the glory, the power of High Lord coursing through his veins. Instead, he sounds like a boy being denied his favourite sweets. âCall me Eris again.â
âNo.â You frown at him, pulling back slightly to meet his stubborn gaze. âWeâre not friends. Youâre the High Lord of Autumn now and Iâll be addressing you as such.â
âWhat, Iâm High Lord now, so you have to respect me all of a sudden?â he asks, tilting his head.
âYes,â you sigh, already anticipating this conversation taking a turn you donât want it to.
âYou have to be pleasant with me?â
âYes.â
âListen to my commands?â
âYes.â
His smile turns wolfish. âThen I command you to call me Eris.â
âI can think of a few other things to call you, if not High Lord,â you mutter, careful not to allow any eavesdroppers to hear.
âAnd while Iâd love to hear them, I doubt theyâd be suitable for the delicate ears of court officials.â
While heâs exactly right, the way his eyes twinkle with mischief tells you that heâs insinuating a completely different type of unsuitable and your cheeks burn.
âDonât you ever tire of being so wearisome?â you say, drily. His eyes soften ever so slightly as they scan over your face.
âDonât you ever tire of pretending?â he asks quietly, meeting your eyes determinedly. You donât bother asking him to clarify.
âWhy canât you just mind your own business?â You try to snap at him, but the way his words hit you deep have all the bite leaving your voice and instead you sound imploring.
Eris doesnât answer your question and just keeps going as the two of you dance. âMy mother wants me to tell you that youâre welcome to visit any time, by the way.â
âIâll let Rhysand know.â
âShe didnât say Rhysand, she said you.â
âWhat?â You look up at him, shocked. That was probably the last thing you expected him to say, âWhy in the world would your mother want me to visit? She saw me hurl that plate at your head last month.â
âYes, and she told me I probably said something to deserve it,â he grumbles, but without any real malice when talking about his mother. Itâs clear as day that he has nothing but love for the sweet woman.
âSheâs a smart one, your mother,â you say, grinning at the thought of Eris being reprimanded. You catch him watching you without speaking and immediately frown, not wanting him to think youâre actually smiling at him. Which you definitely aren't. âI still donât understand why she wants me to visit.â
Eris shrugs, although his eyes stray from yours, and heâs seemingly bored with the conversation as he looks down to the floor as your feet move gracefully across it. âShe likes your attitude.â
âMy bad attitude?â you ask, wrinkling your nose in genuine confusion.
âPassionate,â he corrects you, meeting your eyes again, and you find no traces of humour in them. âAnd âfieryâ as she called it. Donât feel bad for not being able to always control your emotions in front of others like the rest of them. Youâre allowed to feel.â
Any response you might have had is lost to nothing and the silence stretches as your heart feels like itâs slamming against your chest. Itâs a mix of fear and something else with the way heâs looking at you and you suddenly need to be anywhere else.
Clearing your throat, you step back in the middle of dancing and lower your hand from his shoulder to smooth down your dress. Your other hand is still ensnared in his and it lingers there while he speaks.
âIf you do accept my motherâs invitation, you donât have to see me if you donât want to,â Eris adds and you try and listen out for any veiled mocking.
âWhy do you even care?â
At this, his lips quirk up almost involuntarily. Slowly, his fingers start to loosen up around your hand and he begins to let go, faintly trailing his hand down your own as he does so. Instead of stepping away, he walks closer, stepping to the side slightly to lean down so his lips brush against your ear in a way that makes your breathing erratic.
âMy mother was telling me that she saw you practically light up like a forest fire surrounded by the trees. She feels as though you should be able to stay longer next time,â he says in a normal voice before lowering it to a whisper. âShe also overheard one of your sisters call Autumn your favourite season.â
Before you can protest and, letâs face it, lie to him, Eris calmly walks away and you know for a fact that the smug bastard is smirking at the way heâs succeeded in getting under your skin.
Thereâs no way youâre accepting his motherâs invitation, as sweet a woman as she is. You think about all the possible ramifications and decide to push the thought in its entirety out of your mind.
Nothing good ever comes from agreeing to dance with Eris. Itâs extremely similar to playing with fire, you think.
I loooooove this I need more desperately
Or two times you told John Egan no, and the one time you said yes.
Part 1 of Are You Going My Way?
John "Bucky" Egan x female!reader Words: 7k Warnings: mentions of blood, wounds, hospitals
It gets dark early in winter in East Anglia. By the time you leave the ward, itâs pitch dark despite it barely being past dinner time. Huddled in your dark blue wool cape, you trudge along the side of the road, holding a small torch to light your way. Thereâs a cold, biting wind tonight, and it feels like itâs going through every layer youâre wearing, straight through your bones. Breath shuddering, you pick up your pace, the gravel barrier between the road and the grass crunching under your standard-issue brown boots. The faster you get back to the nurseâs barracks, the faster youâre out of this wind and soaking your sore feet and cold toes.
Thorpe Abbots sprawls strangely, but you usually donât mind. The quiet walk at the end of the long shifts in the operating room, rounds on the intensive care ward, cleaning, and inventory is your moment of solace. A moment where you can finally let the smile fall off your face, where you can grit out the curses you've bitten back all day, the crinkle in time when you are allowing the tears to well up and drip down your face silently.
There is no textbook or training to prepare you for the horrific reality. Torn flesh, burns, and the blood. The fear and agony. The pained screaming. The blind panic.
You have never felt more that you are where you need to be, yet you are so completely and utterly powerless.
A light catches your eye, reflecting on the trees around you in a ghostly flicker. Glancing over your shoulder, the light floats through the darkness, gliding towards you. The soft ding of a bicycle bell pulls you out of your reverie. Turning fully, the light casting off your torch finally illuminates the figure on the bicycle.Â
âMajor Egan,â You greet him, trying to keep the surprise out of your voice. He has no reason to be here. Thereâs nothing down this road but the building with the nursesâ quarters. Itâs not the first time youâve encountered Major Egan somewhere he has no reason to be. But you, as an army nurse and merely a first lieutenant, are not about to question him on that.
âYou shouldnât be walking here alone at night, lieutenant,â He tells you, stopping next to you. You stop, too, taking a good look at himâbecause why wouldnât youâas he gets off his bike.Â
A little too friendly, a little too forward. His bright, sharp blue eyes are contrasted by luscious dark curls and that devilish smile. Tall, broad-shouldered, and moving with a confident grace, he is hard to miss. And if you were to somehow overlook him in a crowd, he commands, demands, attention. There is something dangerously magnetic about him, something electric.
You best keep your distance.
âDonât worry about me, please, Major,â You reply politely. âItâs not late, and I know the way,âÂ
âAre you done for today?â He asks conversationally, smiling, his eyes crinkling happily. The tips of his ears are red from the cold. In the middle of a quiet road, in the dark, in freezing temperatures, itâs an odd place for polite conversation.
âYes, Iâm heading back to my quarters,â You smile. âLong day,â You add, hoping to cut the conversation short, desperately trying to suppress the full body shiver from the cold. You notice with some envy that Major Egan seems wonderfully unbothered by the biting wind in his sheepskin jacket. You nod at him, turning back in the direction you had been heading, gingerly taking a step. Hopefully, he gets the hint.
âI could give you a ride,âÂ
You stop dead in your tracks, looking back at him wide-eyed.Â
âIâm heading in the same direction, so youâd get there quicker,â He beams at you with that brilliant smile, patting the carrier at the back of the bike. Instinctively, you start shaking your head, trying to keep yourself from vocalizing your thoughts.
Youâd be out of the wind. Youâd be in the warm faster. Youâd have to get close to Major Egan and hold on to him. You bet that that sheepskin jacket is nice and warm. You bet Major Egan is nice and warm.
âIsnât that the bike you almost lost an eye for?â Your sense of self-preservation is stronger, has to be stronger, than any magnetic force or joking flirtation from Major John Egan.
âAlmost?â He seems surprised you brought it up but recovers quickly. âI remember it differently â it was a bullseye, not my eye,âÂ
He looks at you like heâs expecting you to laugh with him, but you just blink in disbelief. Thatâs an awful joke. For a mere second, in the reflected light of your torch, you see his smile falterâheâs smart; he knew that was a dud. You purse your lips.
âI suppose I like my rides without stories of near-eye trauma attached,â You muse. Itâs such a flimsy excuse. Â
âDo you think itâs bad luck?â Itâs a chillingly honest question, and all cheer has suddenly disappeared from his voice. You pause to think. It hadnât really occurred to you that Major Egan might be a particularly superstitious man; somehow, he didnât seem the type. But in these times, superstition creeps up on even the most staunch rationalists.
âLuck has nothing to do with it, Major,â you finally admit, eyeing him carefully. He frowns, suddenly unsure of the gravity of the conversation through his own too-candid question. âI would just hate to encourage any of that sort of behavior,â You add lightly.
âSo, you would have accepted if I had a different bike?â He sounds on the precipice of hopeful, but the laughter in his voice is evident again. He changes so quickly and bounces back from everything in a mere second â itâs all a joke, after all. Heâll do you a favor and then jokingly ask for a kiss. And then maybe another. And then heâll move on to whatever or whoever catches his eye next.Â
You wrinkle your nose. No. Youâre not interested, you repeat to yourself. If you were, you might as well have stayed at home and practiced your good graces at dinner parties. You joined the Army Nurse Corps because you wanted to do something, mean something.
âIâm going now,â You clench your jaw to stop your teeth from clattering. âGood night, Major Egan,â
âSuit yourself, lieutenant,â He grins, undeterred, as he watches you turn on your heel, huddling into yourself to protect yourself from the wind. Truthfully, Bucky wasnât expecting that you would accept his offer. If anything, he wanted to see how youâd react: your replies are always calm and composed, so very proper, but you have a bad poker face. From the way you scrunch up your nose in annoyance to how the corner of your mouth sometimes threatens to pull into a smile at his jokes. And Bucky notices that your gaze lingers just slightly longer than would be polite, although nothing coming out of your mouth would corroborate that. Itâs adorable. Itâs intriguing. And he knows you wonât make it easy on him.
But thatâs not why he keeps thinking about you. Thatâs not why he goes out of his way to look for you.
You suddenly took root in his thoughts only a few weeks back. It had been a bad day. Worse than Bucky had seen in a while, there had been many bad days lately.Â
Being Air Exec has some perks, mostly that other people donât really question why heâs wandering the halls of the infirmary at the dead of night. In the hallway, set up on provisional cots, medics are asleep, still fully dressed. They just collapsed on the first soft spot the moment they could. He can hardly blame them.
His footsteps echo through the dark rooms. The wounded men in the beds are fast asleep â itâs eerily quiet except for the occasional snore.Â
Heâs not sure why heâs here. Maybe itâs to assuage some of the guilt heâs feeling â heâs fine after all. He didnât go up with them, after all. Maybe because he needs to see the pain with his own eyes, afraid that heâll forget.
The doctor on duty is doing rounds, his desk empty, when Bucky slips through the swinging double doors to where the heaviest casualties are put up. The air in the room feels differentâheavier. Itâs not quietâlabored breathing, raspy, sometimes gurgling, groans of pain in artificial sleep. He really shouldnât be here.Â
All beds are full.
Itâs been a really bad day.
Itâs there that he notices you first: sitting on the floor, arms crossed and tucked up against yourself, head leaning against the wall, and legs bent at an uncomfortable angle. In the first second, he thinks someone fell out of their bed. But as Bucky gets closer, he recognizes you â the seersucker cotton dress, the matching cap now crumpled and skewed on your head, and the clearly scuffed and dirty white oxfords. You are one of the OR nurses.
Heâs seen you around, just in passing. In chaos between casualties, just from the corner of his eye. Sometimes, you showed up at dances or parties, and Bucky had noticed your cute laugh from across the room, the way your entire face lit up when you smiled. And he knows heâs not the only one who has noticed the delightful sway of your hips as you walk, evident even through your dress uniform. But you made damn sure to make yourself unavailable by sticking with your girlfriends. Heâs never seen you accept a drink or dance with someone.
Your mouth is slightly open as you breathe deeply, your form cast in the pale moonlight peeking through the sides of the blinds. Bucky wouldnât let a woman sleep on the floor in normal circumstances, but in this case, waking you up would be cruel â there isnât a bed free in the whole hospital. And even bad sleep is better than no sleep.
He moves past you carefully, mentally putting names to all the men here. Those that made it. Thatâs a good thing, right? They made it. Bucky doesnât recognize the figure moaning in pain louder and louder, hands desperately grasping at the neatly tucked-in covers â his entire head is covered with a thick layer of white bandages, not even leaving a slit for his eyes, just a small opening for his mouth. He hesitates before his curiosity takes over and moves by the side of the bed to look closer. Itâs a good thing, right?
He should do something to help him.
Bucky is so lost in thought that he doesnât notice you brushing past him. He almost jumps out of his skin when your torch suddenly clicks on at the foot of the bed. You are bleary-eyed, blinking rapidly as your eyes fly over the patient chart.Â
âHe is due for a new round of pain medication,â You state softly, voice still thick with sleep, before looking up at Bucky. âMajor,â is all you say in acknowledgment of him.
âNurseâlieutenant,â He mumbles in reply, increasingly on edge from the patientâs distress. âWhat are youââ Before he can start running his mouth in confused ramble, you trust the torch at him.
âHold this, please, Major,â Your voice is barely above a whisper, yet it cuts through the noises easily in its steadiness and calmness. The small torch is now in his hand, your fingers brushing over his palm unintentionally as you move through the dark. Itâs like a small spark burned the spot where your fingertip touches his skin. âUp, please,â
Bucky complies, shining the light from a high angle as you prepare a syringe. You look exhausted, but nothing in your movement betrays that. Clinical, precise, and so calm. He watches you speak softly to your patient, your free hand wrapped loosely around his wrist, a syringe poised in the other. But the patient is struggling harder, too panicked, and in too much pain.Â
It happens in a split second.
The patient sits up so quickly that Bucky almost stumbles back in surprise. The patient now has an iron grip on your lower arm, white knuckles, moving in a blind frenzy, pulling you clean off your feet, half over the bed. You yelp in as much surprise as in pain as your knee collides with the metal bed frame. Your face is contorted in pain as you struggle back, trying to regain your footing.Â
âItâs okay, Iâm here to help you,â You keep repeating patiently. Never let them know you are scared: they canât calm down if you are not in control.
Your voice doesnât waver one bit. Bucky clenches the small torch between his teeth, trying to free your arm from the patientâs grip.Â
âN- noâ You breathe, clearly in pain now. âPlease, Major, just help me to hold him still,âÂ
You are still holding the syringe, poised to strike. Grabbing the patient by the shoulder and forcing him back against the pillow. In the struggle, the torch falls from his mouth. It clatters on the tile floor and rolls away. He is so focused on his task that itâs almost by surprise when the struggle ends within a few seconds, and the patient drifts off again. He never saw you give the injection.
You both stand there, breathing heavily. Bucky bends down to retrieve the torch from the floor. Itâs still shining, although it flickers uncertainly with every move. When he straightens back up, he catches you looking at your arm, the brown sleeve of your vest rolled up messily. When you realize heâs looking at you, you pull the sleeve back down and busy yourself tucking the patient back in. But Bucky has seen the angry red fingerprints imprinted on your forearm.
âThank you, Major Egan,â Not a quiver in your tone, although your breathing has barely slowed down. âItâs probably best you go now,âÂ
âAre you alright?â He cannot help but ask, gaze traveling to your arm. He canât help but notice you must have been issued a vest a size up, as the sleeves are a bit too long on you. Itâs adorable.
âPlease donât worry about me,â You reply, smiling, but itâs clearly a deflection. The corners of your mouth are quirked up, but your eyes just spell tired. âYou should try to get some rest, Major. The sun will be up soon,â
There is a certain sense of irony in you telling him that. At least he has a bed to go to, you think wryly. You start walking towards the ward exit, signaling he should follow you.Â
âWill you be okay here by yourself, lieutenant?â Itâs not his place to worry about you, but you are just⌠you. And these men are in pain, scared, and -
âThe doctor will be back from his rounds soon,â Your soft voice pulls Bucky from his thoughts. You stand at the door, holding it open for him. If he hadnât just seen that chaos happen, he would have never guessed by your demeanor anything happened. As he passes you, you salute him. He salutes you back, gazing over to you. The tips of your fingers are shaking.Â
The thought is sudden and overwhelming: he wants to lace his fingers through yours, pull you against him, and hold you until you stop shaking.
âGoodnight, Major,â You whisper with a pointed look. You want him out of here so you can check on your throbbing knee and painful arm away from his prying eyes.
âGoodnight, lieutenant,â He replies, tearing his eyes away from you.

In early spring, it seems like the rain never stops, from semi-permanent drizzle to raindrops rhythmically ticking against the window pane to the torrential downpour you find yourself in now. The drab-colored trench coat is putting up a valiant fight to keep you dry.
Youâre holding your purse over your head but to no avail. The cold trickle of water from your sodden hair travels down your spine. Youâre trailing behind your friends, who are making good time through the storm. Water sloshes in your left boot, making it heavy, the drenched woolen sock rubbing painfully against your foot.Â
Then you hear it. The all too-happy ding of a bicycle bell.Â
You try to walk faster, gritting your teeth, but Major Egan has caught up with you in just seconds. You donât stop to greet him, just glancing over at him with narrowed eyes. Gracefully, he jumps off the bike, matching your pace by foot easily. His dark curls are plastered to his forehead, his cap sagging under the weight of the water it must have absorbed. He shouldnât look this good, sopping wet, especially when you feel so wretched.
âLieutenant, I could get you where you need to be a whole lot quicker,â he calls out.
âNo, thank you, Major,â Your tone is polite, but you keep walking, falling behind further and further from your friends as your left boot squelches with every step. You know he noticed.Â
âYouâre really not going to take me up on the offer? Even in this downpour?âÂ
âMost drops miss,â You canât keep the scowl off your face as you march on.Â
âYou are so unbelievably stubborn,â He laughs. You donât think youâre stubborn; you just donât like feeling like your hand is being forced.Â
âI donât need you to save me, Major.â You tell him evenly, finally stopping and turning to him. You know your friends noticed you stopping but probably figured they were doing you a favor and kept going.Â
Bucky regards you carefully â you look miserable. The curl has long been rained out of your hair; rivulets of water running down your face, dripping on the collar of your trench coat. The steep downturn of the corners of your mouth pretty much just seals the deal. But despite all the evidence, you would never admit youâre anything but fine.Â
âSave you?â He sounds incredulous. Like the thought never even crossed his mind.Â
You bite your lip â you might have said too much. But you are afraid that he might ask you for something if you owe Major Egan a favor. He will ask you for something. And you wonât be strong enough to tell him no maybe because you want him to ask. Who wouldnât?
Youâve seen him look at you from across the room before, and when you scrape together the courage to meet his gaze, itâs like electricity. Short, intense, and almost painful. And then he looks away, his attention turning so fleetingly. It leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.
âForget it,â You mumble, clearly embarrassed. Closing your eyes for a moment and taking a deep breath, you wish nothing about this moment was happening right now. When you peek through your lashes at Major Egan, you note he looks concerned.
âFor what itâs worth,â He clears his throat, not a trace of humor in his voice. âI never considered you to require saving, lieutenant.âÂ
You keep looking at him sharply, finally shaking your head. âYou have a funny way of showing it.âÂ
There is something deeply absurd about the whole conversation. Just tell him no. Just bid him goodnight and leave. Why are you even entertaining him with your feelings on this? And itâs clearly entertainment to him.
âIâm going to my quarters now, Major,â You state, feeling the need to be polite despite your increasingly impolite feelings about the situation. âAnd youâre going in the wrong direction,â You add pointedly as you start walking again. It feels like you have an entire puddle in your boot now.
âSo what would you prefer, lieutenant? A more classic approach?â That devastatingly handsome grin is back on his face again as he walks beside you. How is that what he took from your last statement? Your shoulders sag when you feel the butterflies in your stomach. âAt the next dance, I buy you a drink and sweep you off your feet on the dance floor?âÂ
âI might be more agreeable when itâs not freezing or raining,â You sigh like itâs paining you to admit it. Maybe heâs imagining it, but Bucky likes to think he saw the shadow of a smile pass over your face as you say it, even though your voice is painfully neutral.Â
âIs that a yes?â Again, that hopeful edge.Â
âNo,â You reply curtly, but you feel bad the moment you say it because you see his smile fall â heâs staring at you somewhere between confusion and growing frustration. Itâs making you feel bad. A horrible little selfish part of you wants him to only smile at you. Major Egan could light up a room with that smile â he regularly does. The selfish little monster in you wants to be the reason that he smiles like that.Â
âAsk me again at the dance, Major,â You amend carefully.
The way his face breaks out in that broad, beaming smile makes you weak at the knees.Â

Bucky is on pins and needles tonight. Even Buck, usually so even-tempered, is getting irritated with him. Drumming his fingers on the bar, tapping his foot not to the beat of the music but to blow off some of the anxious energy. People are flittering in and out of the hall, but there is no sign of you yet. Heâs going through his whiskey too quickly, and itâs doing very little to calm his anticipation.
After an hour of only half-listening to the conversation going on around him, constantly glancing at his watch, he finally sees the pack of nurses come in. Buckyâs heart drops a little because you arenât with the group. Youâre always with that group. Knocking back the rest of his drink, he resolutely makes his way to the table now occupied by five gossiping nurses. All eyes are on him as he approaches.
âGood evening, ladies,â He smiles, eyes searching the table. All chairs are occupied â clearly, your friends arenât saving you a seat. A chorus of good evenings and giggles comes in reply.
âHow can we help you, Major Egan?â A blonde nurse asks, peering up through her lashes.
âIâm actually looking for my favorite nurse,â He replies easily, holding his smile despite feeling mildly annoyed. When he mentiones your name, another chorus of giggles.Â
âI thought I was your favorite nurse,â One of the girls pipes up. The girls burst out laughing.
âSheâs on the night shift,â An earnest, young-looking nurse cuts in, pushing up her glasses. Bucky doesnât really recognize her â she must be quite new. âI asked to switch shifts because I havenât been to a dance here before.â
âYou should have found someone from the afternoon shift,â the blonde nurse sighs in a bored tone. âThe poor girl is putting in a double shift now,â
âNo one else would switch with me,â The bespectacled nurse defends herself with a small voice.
Bucky should be annoyed. Did you scheme this out on purpose? You run so hot and cold between your lingering looks and thinly veiled barbs. But then again. Of course, you would switch shifts with the new girl out of kindness. You slept on the floor to stay close to those most needed care. Doc sang your praises in the officerâs mess regularly for staying late to finish inventory, covering in emergencies, and keeping the OR running smoothly. Kindly caring for everyone around you.
He should be annoyed. But instead, he feels jealous. Itâs a horrible feeling. But you cared more about the new girl than him? Is it really so bad that he wants your kind attention aimed at him? That he wants to be your choice? You wouldnât even give him a shot.Â
It just wonât do. But now, at least, he knows where to find you.
At the end of the dark hall, a faint light. A lone lamp on a lone desk, with a lone nurse sitting at it. You hear him coming, of course. Your bright eyes look straight at him as he emerges from the darkness. You are already getting up out of your chair, ready to greet him, notes and medical textbook forgotten on the desk.
âGood evening, Major Egan,â you greet him, your voice soft. Your gentle tone carries sweetly through the quiet hall. You didnât expect him to come find you. It feels far too serious, far too earnest. You havenât seen or spoken to Major Egan for over a week now, and for your own sake, you decide that he hadnât been seriousâthat you hadnât been serious. It was just banter.
Truthfully, you were slightly relieved the new girl asked you to switch shifts. But as you sat at the duty desk by yourself, blankly staring at the pages of your medical textbook, your stomach twisted painfully with regret.Â
âGood evening, lieutenant -â you cut him off with a sharp shush, tapping your index finger against your lips. You step a bit closer to him, voice a sweet whisper. âPlease keep it down,âÂ
A beat of silence as youâre both clearly uncomfortable in the strange situation you have suddenly found yourself in.
âHow can I help you, Major?â You whisper politely as your eyes nervously, guiltily, dart around the roomâanywhere but him. He looks sharp in his dress uniform. He smells nice. He clearly made an effort. And youâre standing here in your day-old hospital uniform. Self-consciously, you try to straighten the standard-issue white and brown stripe wrap-around dress.Â
âI came looking for my favorite nurse,â Bucky replies sincerely, eyes boring into yours.Â
âThen you must not be looking for me,â The words tumble out before you can stop yourself. Bucky nearly bursts out laughing at the pained look that crosses your face as you clamp your mouth shut.Â
âI was waiting for you to show up at the dance,â He says with that same heavy sincerity. His stance is casual, hands in pockets and shoulders relaxed. But the way he fidgets â tapping and shuffling his foot â as he waits for you to reply hints that he is not nearly as calm as heâd like to appear.
âI had to stay,â You reply, still avoiding his gaze. Itâs a half-truth. You could have said no. But the new girl seemed to want to go to the dance more badly than you did. It felt unfair. And you had convinced yourself quite thoroughly that Major Egan wouldnât care or notice anyway.
Another silence falls. Neither quite sure where to go from here.
âHow are the boys doing?â Bucky asks conversationally, reaching out to the large doors leading into the intensive care unit. On a whim, you grab his hand before he touches the handle, your fingers gently wrapping over the top of his large hand. He stills, and for a moment, you think heâll shake your hand off his. But instead, he waits in acceptance.
âIt wonât help you,â You whisper. It took you a while to figure out why Major Egan was in the hospital that night. When people spoke of him, they spoke of how much he cared for his men â a heavy burden to bear.
âHelp me?â His voice is suddenly loud. He is offended at the notion that heâs doing it for himself and offended that you called him out like that. He opens his mouth again to argue with you.
Startled by the volume, your brain misfires fully, and instead of replying, your free hand reaches out to his face, your index finger landing on his soft lips to silence him. He stares at you wide-eyed. You are sure you look as shocked as he does. You try to gather your thoughts quickly.
âI - I understand,â You implore him in an urgent whisper, finally looking at him. Bucky sees his own sorrow reflected in your eyes.Â
Sometimes, you can only wait. There is no next round of medicine; there is no operation that will help. Waiting for the body to do its work can be frustrating and maddeningly slow.
âBut there is nothing you can do now, so going in wonât help you or them,â You swallow. Why is your finger still on his lips, and why is he letting you do that? âThey need to rest. You need to rest.â
His fingers lace through yours as he steps closer. Itâs inappropriate how close he is standing to you. Itâs inappropriate how the tips of your fingers caress the seam of his lips. Itâs inappropriate how your hand has latched onto his, his thumb drawing lazy circles on the pulse point of your wrist.
âI donât need rest.â His voice is soft and close. The intimacy of his lips moving against your fingers is intense, each breath setting your nerve endings on fire. He leans into your touch, trailing from the corner of his mouth to his jaw. Finally, you look at him.
âThen what do you need?â Your question comes automatically. Always looking for how to help. Always so kind. He could melt into your soft touch, warm voice, and how you look at him so sweetly.
âI need to know when youâre done here so I can sweep you off your feet,â His eyes meet yours, keenly following your every move.Â
You want to take a step back and break the increasingly feverish connection, away from his oddly earnest confession, but Bucky pulls you closer with a small tug on your hand. Your head is swimming; your heart is hammering in your chest. You shouldnât entertain any of this, but it feels like your heart is pouring out of your mouth.
âMy shift ends at 0500,âÂ
Bucky grins at youânot in a teasing way, but with that infectious broad smileâthe one you cannot help but smile back. It gives you butterflies. Youâre smiling at him now, beautifully, genuinely. It feels like a victory to Bucky.
âIâll keep the party going if you promise me the last dance.â His voice is low and inviting; he is reeling you in further with every word.
âDonât torture everyone on my account, please,â You feebly try to inject some levity into the situation. You know yourself well enough: you are no match for John Egan and his attentions. From sparks across the room, now itâs like youâve touched the live wire, and the current has a hold on you. Thatâs why you always avoided him so. Â
âTorture? Darling, itâs a party,â He needles you gently, eyes glinting merrily. âOnly you would equate that to torture.âÂ
âMajor -,â âBucky,â He interjects. You blink at him, biting your lip.Â
âBucky, please,â The moment you utter his name, so beguilingly, so breathlessly, he presses your palm against his face fully, his hand covering yours. He needs you closer. The golden buttons of his jacket brush against the front of your dress. His lips press against the soft flesh of your hand as he studies your reaction. The hitch in your breath is embarrassingly loud to your ears.Â
âPlease, what?âÂ
âDonât torment me like this,â It sounds even more pathetic when you say it out loud. And exactly as youâd expect, the admission of your weakness, the slightest chink in your armor, is an in for him.Â
âHow do I torment you, exactly?â His voice is so warm, so encouraging.Â
âYou take far too much pleasure in making fun of me, for one,â You try to play it off in a last-ditch attempt. But under his heated gaze, his breath brushing on the sensitive skin of your wrist, you falter. You frown before you utter in a small voice: âItâs not nice how you toy with me, Bucky, because itâs obvious that⌠that itâs just a joke to you, and your idea of a joke could get me dismissed, and sent home,â
You look down at your shoes, embarrassed. You want to pull away, but Bucky is not allowing you an inch of slack.
âItâs not a joke to me.â He sounds surprised. You look up at him, unable to keep the skepticism off your face. âIt wasnât a joke from that night I saw how calmly you handled that panicked patient, the moment you saluted me with those shaky fingers, and then every time you denied my help, you stubborn, stubborn girl,â His face is so close to yours now; a finger tracing down the side of your neck, down, just along the collar of your dress, leaving goosebumps in its wake. The way your hand rests on his cheek, you could pull him even closer if you wanted to. âIâve wanted to grab hold of you, wrap you around me-â
Footsteps. You pull back from Bucky with a jerky movement, who mercifully releases you immediately, stumbling back two steps, almost hitting the desk with your legs. Itâs strangely cold suddenly without his hands wrapped around yours, without him so close you could feel the warmth radiating off his body. Blood is rushing in your ears. Bucky looks too collected, but to your relief, you spy a faint blush creeping up his neck.Â
So it wasnât just you.
Hands folded, you take another furtive step back behind the desk, making sure thereâs a respectable distance between you as the doctor on duty turns the corner. Bucky and the doctor start talking in low voices, but you are not listening. In your mind, you keep returning to his words, trying to put the puzzle pieces together.Â
That night on the ward. That was the first time you spoke and saw each other in more than passing. Thatâs when Bucky suddenly formed this habit of popping in places he had no business of being. Places you happened to frequent. You really hadnât been vain enough to consider that the common denominator in those situations was you. It had to be a coincidence that he had just turned into a joke.Â
âNurse,â The doctor turns to you, handing you his clipboard. You nearly jump out of your skin, being so lost in thought. âPlease update the log,â
âYes, doctor,â You nod, trying not to look as flustered as you feel. The men start leaving, still talking.Â
âGood night, lieutenant,â Bucky turns to you, unable to keep the cocky smile off his face. Before he turns, he winks at you. It makes your knees so weak you nearly collapse back into your chair. Covering your face with your hands, you try to focus, but the smile wonât come off your face.
Seven more hours until your shift ends.
***
Itâs a misty summer morning, dew covering every inch. The sun is just breaking through the clouds, and itâs promising to be a beautiful day.
When you leave the infirmary, you blink against the early morning sun. Itâs still so early that few people are around. You hesitate. Surely, the party is not still going on. You wouldnât put it past Bucky to actually do it. Rubbing your eyes and yawning, youâre unsure if you could even stay on your feet long enough for a dance. Â
Luckily, you donât have to make a choice.Â
The sound of the bicycle bell makes you smile now. Buckyâs looking remarkably fresh and well-rested. The party clearly didnât go that far into the night. He dressed for duty, his signature sheepskin jacket hanging open.
âAre you going my way, darling?âÂ
You purse your lips because youâre fighting to keep the smile off your tired face. You donât stand a chance. You dart over to him like you are pulled by a magnetic force, the live current arching between you.
Sliding onto the back of the bike, you grab handfuls of the thick sheepskin to steady yourself, trying to find your equilibrium. Buckyâs large, warm hands encircle your wrists and easily pull your hands off his jacket. Instead, he gently nudges you forward by your arms, tucking them under the side of his jacket, wrapping your arms around his waist. The side of your face is resting against his back. You can feel his heartbeat under your palm, resting just under his sternum; you move along with his every breath.
âReady?â Bucky peers over his shoulder.Â
âHmâmh,â You hum in reply, face buried in the folds of Buckyâs jacket. âDrop me off before the last turn?â You mumble, gazing up at him pleadingly. âMatron will be awake and on the prowl by now,â
âDonât worry, darling,â His free hand wraps over yours, pressing a kiss on your knuckles. âIâm not going to get you into any trouble,â
âIâm holding you to that,â You yawn, wrapping yourself around him tighter. Youâre going to make the most of this moment â the quiet morning, the soft sheepskin, the smell of Buckyâs aftershave.Â
You drift in and out of sleep, even though the trip by bike is tortuously short. After almost twenty hours on shift, you should be allowed this comfort. Whining in protest as Bucky starts to unlatch your arms from him, you feel his chuckle as much as you hear it.Â
You slide off the back of the bike, ignoring where the metal was jabbing into your backside on the bumpy road, and rub your eyes, trying to get rid of the haze in your vision. A small yelp escapes you as Bucky tugs you against him by the tie at the waist of your wraparound seersucker dress. The bike lays forgotten in the grass by the side of the road. All the tension and anticipation from last night are suddenly back â you feel wide awake again.
Buckyâs fingers are resting lightly against your waist like he is testing the waters, slowly, gently guiding you closer to him until you are inches away from him. Automatically, your hands sneak back up his jacket, running up his sides to the front of his chest. He is so warm against the crisp morning air.Â
âAre you going to ask me for a kiss now?â It comes out almost naively as you look up at him. God, you hope he says yes.
âI promised not to get you into trouble,â He teases gently, grinning, inclining his face closer anyway, his lips just ghosting over the corner of your mouth. He is rewarded with a shuddering sigh from you â his grip on your waist tightens, prompting you to close the remaining distance between you.Â
âThis, of course, is perfectly innocent,â Only you could be looking at him with those big eyes, full of want, your curious fingers roaming over his chest, and still speak so earnestly. Bucky buries his face in the crook of your neck, shaking from laughter. You wrap yourself around him, head buzzing. Itâs like youâre short-circuiting, sparks flying with every move, every breath.Â
Bucky nips at the sensitive flesh of your neck, hoping to elicit more of those small sounds from you. If it werenât for the quiet morning, remnants of mist dissolving in the first light, he would have missed the softest moan of his name that falls from your lips. He could do this all day. Just explore every move of your body against his, every way you can say his name, every touch that brings you closer to him. You move in effortless synchronicity with him, purely on instinct.Â
âThen itâs trouble you want, darling?â Bucky murmurs, pressing kisses along your jaw.
âItâs only trouble if we get caught,â You reply breathlessly.Â
His finger is under your chin, tilting your face up to him, and finally, Buckyâs lips find yours. For a second, itâs just that: his lips pressed softly, almost chastely, against yours. You push yourself up on your tiptoes to get more leverage, wrapping your arm around his neck. Your other hand stays pressed against his chest, fisting his shirt, feeling how his heartbeat speeds up as you open your mouth for him with a sigh. Bucky doesnât hesitate to deepen the kiss, cupping your face. His other hand is roaming boldly over your back, applying light pressure on your spine so you arch into him, skimming just over the curve of your behind, playfully tugging at the ribbon of your wraparound dress. He knows exactly what he is doing and how to get exactly what he wants from you, and youâre more than eager to please.
Your mouth starts to tentatively explore the column of his neck as he whispers your name longingly, encouraging your little adventure. When your lips touch a particularly sensitive spot right under his ear, Bucky hisses â you can feel his muscles clench. Itâs exhilarating; he feels the sparks as much as you do. Bucky doesnât allow you to bask in your small victory too long, greedily capturing your mouth with his again, wrapping you around him, tucking you against him. His soft touch turns feverish, grasping at your hip. You match in kind, nails grazing the nape of his neck, just along his hairline â anything to keep the tension, the current arching.
You can feel the sunshine on your skin and see it through closed eyes. Breathlessly, you pull away just a fraction â Buckyâs lips are still ghosting over yours.Â
âWhatâs wrong, darling?â He asks so softly youâre unsure if you heard or felt the words against your lips.
âI have to go,â You mumble as you move to stand feet flat on the ground again. Itâs like waking up from a dream. Time is getting away from you. Youâre not ready to pull away from Bucky yet, wanting to stretch the moment out. You gently fix his collar, running your hands over his front once more, as much in an attempt to straighten out the wrinkles you left on his shirt as to feel him move under your palm again. When he steps away from you, you release a shuddering breath. You feel like youâve just been hit by lighting.Â
âIâll come find you,â He winks at you, grinning. Bucky presses a kiss to your forehead, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. The gesture feels intimate, more personal, than you could have imagined.
It was everything you feared happening when you said yes to John Egan. It was everything you dreamed it to be. As you watch him leave, you know that youâll have a damn hard time giving that up.Â
âIâll be waiting.âÂ
note: this was literally supposed to be a quick 2k words fun meet cute kind of thing, just a quick adventure Morty, but oh god I'm in too deep. forgive me for this detour from Of All The Stars in The Sky, but it was necessary, you understand.

âYouâre late, doll.â
The teasing voice of your neighbour catches you off guard when you open your front door; your hand slaps over your heart as you jump from shock.
âSays youâ you smirk as you come down from the surprise. You step out of your door fully, turning and pulling it shut behind you.
Bucky chuckles, locking his own door while you do the same. He canât help but sneak another glance your way - a light blush creeping up your neck under his gaze.
You think youâd be used to him by now, have your little crush under control seeing as you find yourselves leaving for work at the same time regularly. And yet here you are, heart beating faster than youâd like while you fumble with your keys.
Despite being late for work, Bucky waits for you to finish locking up before falling into step beside you as you walk down the hallway to the elevator.
âSo let me guess, you slept through your alarm again?â The firefighter raises a brow, amused by your flushed appearance - unsure if thatâs his effect on you or the fact your shift started five minutes ago.
âWorse,â you wince, âdidnât even set the damn thing.â
If you didnât love it so much so much, youâd be inclined to be offended at the snort of a laugh he lets out. âOh, doll.â Bucky shakes his head with a grin still left on his lips.
âWhat âbout you, Barnes? Spend too much time doing your hair?â
One unamused glare your way and now youâre the one giggling. Walking up to the elevator, you press the button to go down before stepping back to face Bucky.
âIâll have you know, I woke up looking this goodâ He winks at you, hoping youâll accept his non-answer for an answer. But you both know why he woke up late.
He barely even fell asleep, now that his nightmares are back.
His screams travel through the thin walls at night, falling on concerned ears. You pretend as though you donât hear his night terrors but he sees the slight tug at your brows the next morning, the way youâre desperate to ask if heâs okay. But you never do; you donât want to make him uncomfortable. You offered your help once, and youâre not sure you have the right to ask again.
âWho said you look good?â You tease, hoping to lighten the mood.
The elevator dings and the doors open. âWell the old lady whose cat we saved yesterday said I was the most handsome man in townâ He smirks as you both step inside.
âOh thatâs high praise, Barnesâ You reply, watching as he presses the ground floor button.
A comfortable silence falls upon the elevator as it roars back to life. Pulling out your phone, you fire a quick text to your boss to apologise for being late before shoving it back into your back pocket.
Bucky turns to you, âWhat time do you fin-â
A loud clunk sounds from above the lift and it stops moving, dropping a couple inches before coming to a halt again.
âOh, shitâ You all but whisper, almost afraid of speaking too loudly in case it sends you tumbling down.
âWell,â Buckyâs eyes are on the ceiling, âthat didnât sound greatâ
If you werenât so nervous, you might slap him for stating the fucking obvious. Your eyes fall to your hand thatâs grabbed his, not even realising youâd reached for him when the lift stopped.
Your cheeks burn crimson before you release the death grip you had on his wrist, ignoring the sparks resting beneath your fingertips.
âYou okay, doll?â His voice softens when he sees the fear in your eyes.
âUmm..â You stutter, voice as shaky as your hands are.
âHey, hey,â Buckyâs hands are on your shoulders now, âyouâre shaking, Y/n. Whatâs wrong? What do you need me to do?â
Clenching your eyes shut, you take a deep breath. âTell me weâre not about to fall to our deaths, pleaseâ
Your neighbour lets out a breathy âOh, dollâ and strokes his thumbs over your shoulders. When you open your eyes, his blue ones bear into yours reassuringly, âWeâre not gonna fall to our deaths.â
âThis hunk of junk hasnât been serviced in years but iâm pretty sure itâs just jammed or the powers cut out. Either way, weâre gonna be just fineâ He continues.
You let out a wavering breath and nod slowly. âOkay. So what now?â You ask.
Bucky drops one of his hands to get his phone (much to your dismay), âIâm gonna call for the crew to come get usâ
âWait,â You frown, âwhy not press the help button?â
Bringing his phone to his ear, Bucky replies as it starts ringing. âWell, after Mr Garvey lugs his ass outta bed, heâd be calling them anyways. Might as well avoid being stuck here longer than we have toâ
Ahh, Mr Garvey; the landlord to the whole building who also happens to be the laziest fucker around.
You mumble and âokayâ and roll your bottom lip between your teeth - completely unaware of the admiring eyes on you.
Eventually, a voice sounds from the other side of the phone and Bucky explains the situation, rambling off the information they need to find you. With a quick thank you, the call is over and youâre left with nothing but time to waste.
Your eyes follow the man before you as he approaches the far wall, sliding down it till heâs sat with one leg stretched out, the other bent at the knee where he rests his elbow.
âItâs alright, doll. You can sit down, it wonât break anythingâ He cocks his head to side, eyeing up your hesitant features.
You choose to trust him; after all, he is the one best qualified to know what will and wonât make this obnoxiously small lift crash to the ground.
Letting yourself drop to the floor, you sit with your knees up due to the lack of space to stretch your legs. Bucky is right in front of you, the tight squeeze seemingly not bothering him.
âGreat day to be late, huhâ You scoff lightly.
âYeah well, at least weâre togetherâ
A laugh escapes you, drawing a confused expression from your neighbour. âLetâs not pretend as though you need me here. If it werenât for me youâd probably be climbing outta this thingâ
âYou overestimate my abilities, sweets. Iâm no spider-manâ He replies. Those damn pet names make you blush every time.
âYou know,â you tilt your head a little to the left, âI canât think of anyone who still uses âdollâ or âsweetsâ aside from youâ
You swear thereâs a glint in Buckyâs eye when he replies, âDo you blush when someone calls you âbabyâ as much as you do when I call you âdollâ?â
Thinking for a moment, you shyly shake your head in response; he raises his brows at you, as though your answer proves his point. You wonder if heâs old fashioned in other ways. If heâs one to buy his girl flowers or open a car door for them. Maybe heâs just as polite in bed, though you find yourself disappointed at the thought. God, you need to stop thinking of him like that, no matter how hot he would look between your-
âYou seeing that fella from last week again?â
Buckyâs question brings you out of your day dreams and youâre surprised by it, unaware he had any interest in your love life.
âPeter?â He nods. âNo, I donât think so. We werenât really one the same page, if that makes senseâ
âHow so?â
You shrug slightly, âHeâs fresh out of college and looking for a fuck buddy, not a genuine relationship.â You look away from Bucky as you continue. âAnd even if I wanted that, heâs hardly mature enough to know what heâs doingâ
With your gaze settled on your hands, you miss the way Bucky starts biting his lip as he wonders what type of man would fulfil your needs. He shakes his head clear of those thoughts, not wanting to make a fool of himself.
âWhat about you? Havenât heard any visitors at yours for a little whileâ You comment, hoping he doesnât think youâve been spying on him.
He lets out a dry laugh, âLets just say I prefer my nights off with a beer and listening to you play the piano.â
âOh god, you hear that?â You cover your face with your hands when he nods. âI hope I donât disturb you. I didnât think it-â
âItâs fine, doll,â he nudges your thigh with his boot, âI like itâ
Your cheeks burn yet again as you drop your hands. âYou do?â
âHow could I not? You play beautifully. Iâve thought of slipping a request under your door but I didnât wanna be the creep next doorâ
You giggle, âYou couldnât be creepy if you tried, Barnesâ
âIn that case, you should know my cat loves your music tooâ
With a gasp, you lean closer to Bucky till youâre sat cross legged barely a foot away from him. âJames Barnes, the firefighter, has a cat!?â
You revel in his hearty laugh, eyes dancing across his face. From the crinkles at the corners of his eyes to the deep smile lines framing his mouth, you canât help but be drawn to his beauty.
He sobers up. âHer nameâs Alpine.â He says, âShe was left at the firehouse a couple of years ago so I took her home with me. Sheâs probably the only thing that loves your music more than meâ
A grin tugs at your lips as you enjoy the thought of your neighbour cuddled up with a little cat.
âIf we make it outta here alive, I wanna meet herâ
âWeâll be fine, doll. The crewâll be here any minute nowâ
You hum and silence consumes the air once more. The soft dim glow of the overhead lights falls gracefully on your features and Bucky canât pull his eyes away. He knows youâre not too fond of the situation youâre both in and yet he canât help but thank whatever beings made this happen; to finally have an excuse to talk to you longer than your usual small talk, to tell you how much heâs in awe your piano playing.
Heâs not ready to tell you that heâs rather in awe of you, too. Maybe next time youâre stuck in a lift together.
With the silence so heavy on your ears, your mind drifts to the reason youâre here in the first place. The reason he is here.
The nightmares.
You know he hasnât slept properly in weeks; the dark circles beneath his eyes are just a glimpse of his exhaustion. And as much as youâre scared of pushing him away, the weight on your chest is growing too heavy to bear.
âI know youâre having nightmares again.â
Bucky stills.
âThose screams, James, I-â
âItâs nothingâ He cuts you off with stern words. Your brows pull together, eyes laced with worry.
âIt doesnât sound like nothing. I thought they got better.â
His head falls back against the wall behind him, âWell you thought wrong.â
You curse yourself beneath your breath as you run your hands through your hair, searching for the right thing to say.
âIâm worried about you, James.â You breathe, eyes fluttering shut. Youâre scared that if you look at him, youâll cave in and promise to never ask about it again. âI get that iâm just your neighbour but I canât keep acting like I canât see thereâs something wrong.â
âThere is nothing wrong!â Buckyâs tone is sharp, not quite shouting but no longer calm.
Your eyes snap open, training on the clench of his jaw, the sole hint of any emotion on his face.
âIâm dealing with it. So you need to stop acting like you know me because you donât.â
And there it goes. The worry in your chest morphs into regret. Regret for bringing it up, regret for thinking you could help, regret for hearing his screams in the first place.
âOkayâ
Bucky hates how timid your voice is, barely loud enough over the ringing of his own heartbeat. That and the voice in his head telling him heâs a piece of shit. He wishes he could take it all back but he doesnât know how to, so he decides that silence is better than opening his damn mouth and making things worse.
The pair of you sit there in silence, one thatâs far less comfortable than before, and stare at the ceiling, waiting for help to arrive.
When it does, you count your lucky stars that the lift stopped just at the doors to the second floor. Bucky helps the crew pull the doors open enough for you both to climb through. You feel his blue eyes on you as you wait for them to stabilise the lift, avoiding his gaze at all costs.
âOkay, Maâam,â One of the firefighters calls, the name âRogersâ written on his jacket, âwe need you guys to climb up here and weâll pull you out.â
Your eyes widen at the thought of pulling yourself up there, suddenly very aware of your frankly appalling upper body strength.
Rogers catches the hesitation on your face. âDonât worry, Buck will help you up so you can get out firstâ
Turning to look at your neighbour, you lock eyes for the first time in ten minutes. His lips are turned into an awkward half smile, changing his entire demeanour from one of a brooding firefighter to a sheepish kid.
You donât know how long the pair of you stand there staring at each other, but itâs long enough for Rogerâs to clear his throat in attempt to regain your attention.
Bucky steps closer to you while the crew get ready above you. âYou okay with this, doll?â
You nod, âAs long as this thing doesnât fall while iâm half way through and snap my body in half, iâm goodâ
That heartwarming laugh fills your ears and the firefighter shakes his head in amusement. At least he doesnât hate you enough to leave you to get out on your own.
âWell lucky for you, that ainât gonna happenâ
You roll your bottom lip between your teeth. âOkay, how is this gonna work?â
Bucky moves to stand below the gap, facing you. He lowers himself down to one knee before reaching for your hand.
His skin is warm but rough, gentle but strong as he pulls you closer to him. The unexpected tug on your hand sends you tumbling toward him, your right hand bracing yourself on his shoulder to regain your balance while his free hand lands on your hip.
You mumble an apology, flustered at the intense heat beneath his hands and the way Bucky is looking up at you.
âYou good?â He asks, voice dripping with awe, though youâre oblivious to the admiration, still plagued by the way he shut you down earlier.
When you nod, Bucky removes his hand from your hip and taps his knee. âYouâre gonna step on my knee, then on my shoulder and you then should be close enough for Steve to grab you and pull you outâ
âAre you sure? I donât want to hurt youâ You admit, nervous at the thought of letting Bucky take your body weight on his shoulders.
He looks up at you through his lashes âDo you trust me, sweets?â
âYesâ You reply, not even having to think about it. There may be some walls between you, but you know heâs on the other side, waiting.
âGood, then get up hereâ
Bucky shouts up to the crew that heâs giving you a boost now and after hearing them shout back that theyâre ready, you place your foot on Buckyâs knee and push yourself up.
âDonât drop meâ You warn, reaching up to the gap in preparation.
âWouldnât dream of itâ
And with that, you climb onto your neighbours shoulders and stretch up for Steve to grab your hands.
Along with Bucky pushing your feet up, Steve pulls you out and you slide through the gap until youâre free of that god forsaken elevator.
âWell thank fuck for thatâ You groan, spread across the floor on your back, making the crew laugh.
You barely have time to recover before Bucky is stood above you, having lugged himself out with ease.
âGuess you wonât be forgetting to set your alarm again, ay?â

#NightSkyChallenge: Prompt 6 â The night we said goodbye. [âThis is harder than I thought itâd be.â] [2.5k]
â joel miller x f!reader â a/n: this is mostly fluff and angst, hence the lack of warnings. i hope you guys enjoy this even though there's no smut. there are a lot of feelings to make up for that? anyway, i just wanted to imagine being loved by Joel (in the given canon circumstances) and this is what I came up with. enjoy <3
㠤㠤㠤㠤㠤㠤㠤㠤masterlist | part two â
"Eternal tourists of ourselves, there is no landscape but what we are. We possess nothing, for we don't even possess ourselves. We have nothing because we are nothing. What hand will I reach out, and to what universe? The universe isn't mine: it's me," you stop there, uncertain and nervous for more than one reason. "You want me to go on?"
Joel only grunts beneath you, and the palm he has wrapped around your calf starts rubbing there. He's a man of very few words â always has been â but you recognize his cues. Go on, the circles on your skin say. And â "I like it a lot when you read," he speaks, startling you for a second. "'s nice."
Three years since you've been doing this â years, and this is the night Joel chooses to speak his mind.
You grit your teeth and put on a smile, no matter how much it aches to do so. "Look at you, borrowing Pessoa's ability to use words 'n all," you tease.
Joel pinches your inner thigh â a warning.
You take one of your hands out of the book to poke his side â I'm not scared of you. Never was. Never could be.
Even if he's about to break your heart.
You continue reading.
He keeps on drinking it in, and you wonder not for the first time if Joel hears a word that comes out of his mouth or if this is just white noise for him.
I like it a lot when you read.
Inside your chest there's a special place saved only for the things Joel gives you as a gift.
There's no space for material things in the world you live in now. Being a man of very few words, you learned how to read Joel Miller from the moment you met him â a useful skill, one that came in handy over the past few years. People misread him a lot. Mostly because he allowed them to; sometimes because he wanted it that way.
They thought Joel was gruff. Callused.
You knew better.
Joel's body language never lied.
He gifted you things that way â a shrug of his shoulders that hid the fathom of a smile creeping up his face. His furrowed brows pierced together whenever someone spoke in louder tones in your presence. The ghost of his hand hovering over your back in between meetings, or the way he never looked you in the eye before kissing you.
All of them signs. All of them a way for him to communicate.
That was funny. I don't like their tone. I've got your six.
I can't let you see within me.
Joel might as well be an open book.
When Tess introduced the both of you, she said, "Just don't gain expectations. He's like us â lost everything. But he's a decent man, which is more than we can say about half of the people that made it."
A decent man was an understatement.
He was everything and then some in between.
Joel kept it simple when telling you that he and Tess had to leave.
Neither one of them owed you explanations, but they gave you one either way. The three of you ran something together â an illegal, dangerous, and fragile something, but it was yours. Built it from your hands.
They claimed you were the brains.
"You gotta stay," Joel stated. Not a request, and nothing in his eyes that said this is open for conversation. "Marlene gave us very little info. We'll try to make it back as soon as we can."
The implicate we don't know if we'll make it back was there.
You never missed the unspoken words.
"Okay," you agreed, because there was nothing else for you to do.
Tess had left with the kid. She hugged you, giving you the full list of contacts that would be seeing you for things, and said, "Take care of yourself" in the way she always did.
Joel stayed behind to collect what he needed, and because he said a day wouldn't make a difference.
Was it over-confident on your part to allow the fluttering in your chest to take full form after seeing him drop his things on your hardwood floor and ask you to go for a walk? Was it wishful thinking to know he was stealing moments?
The familiar sight of his back gives you comfort as you follow him.
That's the way it's always been â you always knew that one day, you'd see this for the last time.
Maybe it's a small mercy that they're leaving.
It's been yearsâmuch longer than you initially thought you'd have, much longer than you prayed for after the first night Joel knocked on your bedroom door seeking the comfort he saw in your eyes you were dying to give him, much longer than you dreamed you would have amidst all the chaos.
He walks through the broken gate and keeps the wire lifted for you to pass.
Those things â the little things no one pays attention to.
"Thanks," you smile at him.
He hums as an answer and keeps walking by your side until you're both on the open field. After checking the area, Joel lays down with a grunt, patting the grass next to him.
That's when you started reading.
He just pulls out the book from his backpack and hands it to you.
Read for me, please.
"From where we left off, or you want me to go back a few?" Sometimes, Joel fell asleep mid-chapter. He liked when you went back a few so he never missed a thing.
He shakes his head. "I was listenin'," he lets you adjust yourself on the tree, and lays with his head on his backpack, pulling your legs over his body. Cradling your calf in his palms. "Go on."
So you do.
The sky is losing its light by the time Joel takes his arm out of his eyes, and puts a hand in front of the pages.
You bookmark it, even if he'll never hear the end of it.
For some reason, you stay quiet with him.
Usually, the silence is filled with you â your ramblings, questions about the world from before, silly musings that he indulges in listening to.
There's something tragic about being alive nowadays.
It's not really living â it's this. Reading between the lines, and claiming your stomach is satisfied because of the crumbs.
Joel's hand caressing your skin was a whole meal.
His eyes on you, above everything else, were like water.
When he speaks, it's gruff. "You gonna take care of yourself while I'm gone, right?"
If one day you held back, today is not it. "I will. Can't undo all your hard work."
He frowns, "What are you talking about?"
"Oh, c'mon, Joel. It's just us. You and I both know I'd never be alive if it weren't for you and Tess."
"Bullshit. You're theâ"
"Brains, I know," you interrupt. "But without the brawn, the brains can't make it that far."
He scoffs at that, and you realize your mistake only when the words are out. "Think we both know nature said that ain't the case anymore."
"Stupid nature," you curse without any heat, and it works. Joel's lip twitches, itching for a smile. "All it's good for is being gorgeous."
"Hm. That'd be you."
Well. They aren't the first nice words Joel's ever said to you, but they make up an even bigger space than everything else. The little box in your chest engraved with J.M. is blanketed in those three little words, and judging by the way he ducks his chin and looks down, Joel noticed his slip up a heartbeat too late.
"Are you gonna take care of yourself?" you ask, nudging his side.
Joel sits up before he answers, taking the place next to you. Then, he spreads his legs and pats the ground between them, and you take the invitation.
Sitting with your back to his chest and his arms around you is your favorite place to be, and something clutches at your throat at the realization this might be the last time.
"I always do," he finally answers.
Your throat is tight, so you place both hands over his arms and pull them tighter around you. "Good," your voice drops to a whisper. "Can't let stupid nature have you."
"She gets us all in the end."
"I know that. I meant before your due time," you insist.
Joel's only half-listening. When he starts rubbing his nose on your hair, tracing the outline of your ears, that means his attention is divided. "How d'you know when's one's due time?"
"Hell if I know. But I know it's not now."
"Yes, ma'am," he plants a kiss on your neck, and you forget words for a while.
Joel always knew how to do that.
He kissed you awake, and sometimes, he kissed you to sleep.
It was common for the two of you to just sit and exist in silence. In a world where there wasn't much space for anything â not for words, or feelings, or relationships, or growth â having this was out of the curve. Having comfort.
He never tensed around you.
When it's just the two of you, Joel's body is the most relaxed; whether it's due to your hands squeezing his muscles or the way you run your palms through his skin to bring him back to himselfâhe's at ease.
Laid back, shoulders slack. He keeps on leaving kisses across your neck and nape, and you keep your eyes closed, enjoying the proximity. Your nails run through his forearms, and eventually, Joel just stops there in the crook of your neck, breathing slowly.
He asks, "D'you mind if I take your bandana? The purple one?"
Your favorite bandana. His 'lucky charm', as he'd called it once. "No, you can have it."
"You ain't gonna miss it?"
I'll miss you, Joel. A piece of cloth makes no difference in my life. "You need the good luck charm more than me."
"Is that so?"
You scoff, "I'm not the one walking head-first into danger." Craning your neck to look at his face, you lean your head on his shoulder. Joel's face is impassive as always, aside from the little pinch between his brows. "It's your good luck charm, isn't it?"
"It is," he replies, faster than you're used to. A smile grows back on your face. "What?"
"Nothing," you shake your head. "Just â didn't think you'd ever say that again."
He shrugs his shoulders. "'s the truth."
"What made it lucky?"
Joel takes a second with that one. His hand around your upper body finds the collar of your shirt, and he plays with it. He's nervous, and you have no idea why. He shrugs as he says, "Dunno."
Bullshit. "Hmm â something tells me you do."
"Yeah?" he's smiling now.
"Yup," you press, popping the 'p'. Joel stops fighting his smile, and you want to kiss him, so you do. Most of the time, you use restraints around him. Now is not the time for restraint. "Tell me," you plea.
He sighs, the smile still on his face. "That first time I was trying to find alternative routes in and out of the QZ, remember?"
"Yeah."
"So â I'd lost my way. Some Clickers found me and I had to run. Lost my shitâdropped some of the stuff in my bag. I only found my way back 'cause two days later I tried the bridge over the place I got lost at initially and â there it was." Joel's fingertips are tracing your collarbones, and you realize now his body around you is the only thing keeping you from a collapse. "I saw that ugly thing from far, far away."
It makes you laugh â of course he's going to play it cool, make it less of what it is.
You get it. If you had to talk about the things that brought you a sense of home, the only thing that came to mind was the smell of Joel's deodorant mixed with the innate smell of him.
You hide your laugh in his chest, and Joel's hands come up to your nape and the back of your head.
The hurt bubbles up with his touch â you want to drown in your own tears, but he's still here and that would be going before your due time.
"Please be safe." It's rare for you to use the space between the lines, but sometimes you have to.
Please be safe because I need you. Because you've grown inside me. Because the smell of you are vines covering every inch of my ribcages, because every time I wake up and you're lying next to me I remember why we're humans, because Fernando Pessoa might have been right that we possess nothing, but what I am is someone who still knows love.
"I will." Joel heard it all. He pulls your head back to look into your eyes and you see it in his â through the guarded walls of his soul, you get a peak at the man who worries. Who always brings you coffee, who never allowed you to go on dangerous runs, who trusts you to keep his radio codes in case his brother calls for him. You're the lighthouse, he once said. Joel's hand keeps making a mess of your hair, and he looks like he wants to say something, but ultimately, he huffs. "This is harder than I thought it'd be."
"Of course it is," you laugh. "I'm the only one that knows how to make a decent cup of coffee. Or at least, one that you like."
That's when he kisses you.
Because it's true. Not the cup of coffee â Tess can do that as well, even if she never does, but the reality that you're the only one that can and wants to.
The only one who's allowed it.
Living in a world that has no space for living is difficult, but Joel manages to fit the whole human experience in the span of a kiss and some touches.
He's kept you safe, and guarded, and gave you blinks and pieces of the man he once was in return for all that you've given him.
He loves quietly, and kisses hard, and protects with every cell in his body â Joel still loves, even if the word's been burned out of his tongue when he held the most precious life known to him in his arms.
He loves, and you feel it, and you'll miss it.
Joel pulls back with a promise in his eyes that he will be back.
If he isn't, you'll be a moving lighthouse. You'll find him.
