Trump’s separation of immigrant families wasn't Obama policy

Critics of the Trump administration’s separating of families illegally crossing the U.S. border with Mexico have characterized the practice as a distinctly cruel feature of Donald Trump’s presidency. But some Republican commentators argue the policy is essentially a continuation of previous administrations.

[Conservative commentator Matt] Schlapp said the Trump administration’s policy of separating families is “the same way Barack Obama did it.”

Obama’s immigration policy specifically sought to avoid breaking up families. While some children were separated from their parents under Obama, this was relatively rare, and occurred at a far lower rate than under Trump, where the practice flows from a zero tolerance approach to illegal border-crossings.

We rate this False.

That’s not to say Obama didn’t have bad immigration policies. He just didn’t have fucking baby jails.

The morning after Trump’s Tiennamen Square moment

After using teargas and rubber bullets to clear the streets of peaceful protesters in front of the White House to make a path for a pathetic photo op he didn’t even get right,Trump took a deeply disgusting (and, it should probably go without saying by now, woefully premature) victory lap when he took to Twitter to brag about “domination” of the DC streets earlier this morning.  

At the same time, via CNN’s live updates page, it sure as hell looks like the White House has dedicated a lot of resources to cowering in place:

The US Secret Service has closed several streets surrounding the White House to any vehicular traffic — another sign of the increased security in the area.

Late last night CNN reported seeing 8-foot tall metal fencing being erected around Lafayette Park. They look like the almost impenetrable fencing put up during high-level security events like political conventions and inaugurations.
