I work for the president but like-minded colleagues and I have vowed to thwart parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.

President Trump is facing a test to his presidency unlike any faced by a modern American leader.

It’s not just that the special counsel looms large. Or that the country is bitterly divided over Mr. Trump’s leadership. Or even that his party might well lose the House to an opposition hellbent on his downfall.

The dilemma — which he does not fully grasp — is that many of the senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.

I would know. I am one of them.

To be clear, ours is not the popular “resistance” of the left. We want the administration to succeed and think that many of its policies have already made America safer and more prosperous.

But we believe our first duty is to this country, and the president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic.

That is why many Trump appointees have vowed to do what we can to preserve our democratic institutions while thwarting Mr. Trump’s more misguided impulses until he is out of office.

The morning after Trump’s Tiennamen Square moment

After using teargas and rubber bullets to clear the streets of peaceful protesters in front of the White House to make a path for a pathetic photo op he didn’t even get right,Trump took a deeply disgusting (and, it should probably go without saying by now, woefully premature) victory lap when he took to Twitter to brag about “domination” of the DC streets earlier this morning.

At the same time, via CNN’s live updates page, it sure as hell looks like the White House has dedicated a lot of resources to cowering in place:

The US Secret Service has closed several streets surrounding the White House to any vehicular traffic — another sign of the increased security in the area.

Late last night CNN reported seeing 8-foot tall metal fencing being erected around Lafayette Park. They look like the almost impenetrable fencing put up during high-level security events like political conventions and inaugurations.
