If you couldn’t tell already, NASA is having a great year. From Pluto to food grown in space, even in the face of budget cuts, the nation’s space agency had some stellar highlights. Most mysteriously of all, a spacecraft found two eerily bright lights on a distant dwarf planet.

Space Launch System

image

Our Space Launch System (SLS) is an advanced launch vehicle for exploration beyond Earth’s orbit into deep space. SLS, the world’s most powerful rocket, will launch astronauts in our Orion spacecraft on missions to an asteroid and eventually to Mars!

image

A launch system required to carry humans faster and farther than ever before will need a powerful engine, aka the RS-25 engine. This engine makes a modern race car or jet engine look like a wind-up toy. With the ability to produce 512,000 pounds of trust, the RS-25 engine will produce 10% more thrust than the Saturn V rockets that launched astronauts on journeys to the moon!

image

Another consideration for using these engines for future spaceflight was that 16 of them already existed from the shuttle program. Using a high-performance engine that already existed gave us a considerable boost in developing its next rocket for space exploration.

Once ready, four RS-25 engines will power the core stage of our SLS into deep space and Mars.

Ten Years After Katrina

Ten Years After Katrina

As we remember the devastation that Hurricane Katrina caused ten years ago, we also look to the improvements made in the past decade in storm prediction and forecasting.

Hurricane Katrina impacted many people, businesses and communities; and even two NASA facilities were hit by the storm. Marshall Space Flight Center and Michoud Assembly Facility were both hit by the harsh storm (seen below).

Ten Years After Katrina

During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, our satellites were hard at work monitoring and watching the storm from above. Thanks to the higher resolution models we have today, simulations can recreate historical storms, like the below of Hurricane Katrina. Scientists can then study these and learn about past events.

Ten Years After Katrina

Surprisingly, the United States hasn’t experienced the landfall of a Category 3 hurricane or lager since 2005. This is the longest period of time that has passed without a major hurricane making landfall in the U.S. since reliable records began in 1850.

Ten Years After Katrina

Although we don’t know when a severe storm will form, we do know that advancements in technology can help us better prepare and predict its path. So, on this ten year mark of this devastating storm, we look back to remember what we saw: https://www.flickr.com/photos/gsfc/sets/72157656646633089

Today marks the 40th anniversary for the launch of the Viking 1 lander/orbiter to Mars in 1975, which set the stage - err, launch pads - for subsequent flyby, orbiter, lander, and rover missions.

Although some of these missions are marked as “failed” attempts, an engineer or flight controller would dismiss this classification, as data from every mission parleyed information for the next. Failures? No. More like “growing pains” in our spacefaring adolescence.

The year 2015 marks another noteworthy anniversary to which the Viking program laid the foundation for our curiosity and present trajectory for NASA’s #JourneyToMars.

This wonderfully produced video from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) conveys the breadth of vision and the excitement from, among every aspect of each robotic mission, successfully received data!

Enjoy, and continue the journey with us as we work to preserve the legacy of the Viking program with The Viking Mars Missions Education and Preservation Project, the #FirstOnMars!

I love space. I've been to space camp in Huntsville Alabama and I am planning on going every summer. I look forward to be an astronaut for nasa on the sls that is planned to be launched 2018. And the manned mission 2030. So yeah I won't let anything get in my way.
