THAT STAR IS NOT DEAD. 

Im sure you’ve seen the post or heard the quote “when you wish upon a star, technically that star is a million light years away and it’s already dead, just like your dreams”

This is false. That star is not dead, it is not millions of light years away! the Milky Way galaxy is 100,000 light years across, so the oldest light reaching us from a star in our galaxy would be less than 100,000 years old (because we aren’t on the very edge). Stars live for millions and billions of years! Sure that supernova we viewed from another galaxy is from a star that had been dead for ages, but the stars you see at night are much closer and very much still burning brightly! 

The light you are seeing of a star is old, but the star itself is not dead and neither are your dreams!

When can I see the supermoon eclipse tomorrow night?

On Sunday night, people in parts of western Europe, western Africa, North America and all of South America will be able to see a lunar eclipse. And this one’s extra special, because the moon will be at its perigee – the closest it gets to Earth. Not only will the moon turn red (learn why it turns red here) it will seem larger than usual.

In the first GIF I’ve listed the times the moon will enter Earth’s faint shadow (the penumbra) and then its darker, red-tinted shadow. You can figure out exact times for your location using the U.S. Naval Observatory’s handy calculator. 

The second GIF shows the eclipse from another perspective - looking down on Earth’s north pole. This is to scale. It always surprises me to see how far apart the moon (the white dot) and earth (the blue circle) really are. The sun is off screen to the right, casting a long shadow. The colored lines radiating from earth show the approximate horizon lines in the four time zones. Once the lines pass, the moon is visible. Everyone in the contiguous US will be able to see the eclipse, but only people in the Easter and Central time zones will be able to see it start.

you know that sin?

You know. That one sin.

The one that you never tell anybody. The one that you’re afraid to tell people, afraid of their judgement, because obviously if they knew they would condemn you. The one that you’ve unwillingly hoarded to yourself, played close to your chest, not letting anyone have so much as a peek. That sin, the one that not even your parents or your best friends or anybody else knows about.

That. One. Sin.

I don’t know when it started. Maybe you were younger, or maybe you were older. Maybe you didn’t know it was wrong, at first, or maybe you knew it was wrong but you did it anyways. Maybe you were pressured into it, felt like you didn’t have a choice. Maybe you were indulging yourself with something that you’d always wanted to try but never had the opportunity to.

And now you look back, and you feel sick. You wish it had never happened in the first place. You wish that you hadn’t been so stupid. You wish that you had listened to whoever had warned you away from it. It wasn’t supposed to be like this, eat this much of you up—it wasn’t supposed to go any further than that first try.

It hurts. You feel dirty. You wonder how God could ever love someone as horrible as you. As dirty as you. As broken as you.

Let me tell you something:

That’s a lie.

Because, secret sin or not, if you have Jesus then you are God’s child.

You have been made clean, whole.

Jesus’ blood is bigger than your sin.

Jesus paid it all.

God loves to forgive.

God loves to heal.

God loves to love.

Don’t hide from him. Run to him. Let him welcome you back.
