SUMMARY: You just got your new job as a waitress at the cafe down the street from campus, perfect right? No. Well, it was until your clumsy self ruined everything by spilling coffee all over a customer on your first day. He was obviously not the forgiving type either because he came to the cafe every Friday with his friends to study and would request for another server besides you. Will he ever forgive you or will you have to deal with the man’s red eyes glaring at you every SINGLE Friday?

It didn’t bother you anymore. The sound of his voice echoing in your mind. Speaking little things to himself that made you smile through the day; almost like you were there with him just as he was with you. In fact, you looked forward to hearing it. The gravely husk of his voice every day, a delight to have with you through the days and it had become a comfort rather than a hindrance.
“Shit I’ve got to pick up food.” His voice, clear through your mind, the sound one you’d grown used to hearing on and off through the day.
You wished you could ask him what he was eating. Inquire about those things, but sadly you couldn’t send thoughts his way. It only happened whenever it felt like happening, and so you waited throughout the day. Patiently biding time until his voice came back to you.
You can’t remember when it started. His voice coming into your head one day and never leaving, but it happened a long time ago. Back in high school. While you were sleeping; a voice of a boy continued to echo in your mind. You figured it was the stress of school. Of trying to get into college, but it never went away. His thoughts showing up at random hours of the day. So, you grew used to the person who was somehow connected to you; wondering if he could hear you as clearly as you heard him.
Frankie Morales.
He had said his name years ago, almost deliberately, and you’d thought yours right back. Repeated it until you felt like he got the message. Frankie. You liked the name. Thought about it every once in a while when you missed him; wondering how he was. What he was doing in life. The hope that he knew who you were still held in your heart as the days passed slowly.
Frankie knew who you were. Knew that somehow your voice would echo in his mind, a comfort to him as well, and he began to think of things he never thought he would. Your voice was there when he joined the army. When he became a pilot. When he was packed into a tiny bunk half the size of his body, the anxiety of whether or not he’d make it home plaguing his body. And then there was you. Whispering words of comfort to him.
Saying that you wished he was there with you. Listing off the most mundane things possible, because you could hear him cry out in his thoughts. Could hear the pain in his voice and knew that he needed help.
“I’d love to show him my fist.”
Frankie smiled in the middle of the grocery store, your voice echoing in his mind. He figured you were talking about someone you didn’t like; the irritation in your voice informing him of enough. Listening to the flurry of thoughts that suddenly ran through his head, he tried to focus on what he actually came here for.
“Man, I don’t know. She said some kind of flour,” Will said from the aisle he was currently on.
“Did you write it down?”
Frankie followed the sounds of his friends, grabbing a box of cereal he needed; knowing that his daughter liked one brand and only one brand. He didn’t mind much, because it gave him a routine for grocery shopping. Always easier than what Will was currently doing. Standing with Benny and Santi as they tried to figure out what in the hell Will’s wife actually said.
“Call her.” Santi picked up a bottle of creamer he needed for his coffee. “Better to call her and get it right.”
“Can’t forget the milk.”
His head had begun to hurt every time your voice echoed in his head. A sharp pain right in the front of his forehead, until his vision went fuzzy for a few seconds. He figured it was dehydration causing the pain, because this had never happened before. The echo of your voice, louder than before. Almost as if you were speaking directly in his ear.
“Fuck my head hurts.”
You rubbed at the exact spot on your forehead that seemed to be bothering Frankie as well. His voice, thoughts, all of it had become a problem since you walked into this damn grocery store. If you could turn off your mind, you would, but then you’d miss his company. Even if he wasn’t around to actually accompany you to the store. After a shit day of dealing with your boss who had called you minutes before to tell you that you had to finish your assignment or else you would be looking for a different job, and your car nearly dying on you.
You simply needed a glass of wine to help appease everything.
“Frankie, can you grab the other one too?” A blond man said, his arms full of groceries. Two other men followed behind him.
Something in your mind clicked at the name. Frankie. No, that wasn’t possible. The man in your mind wasn’t the same one at the store. Besides, it was a common name. You agreed that you were just about to happen on a stranger; even if you wanted to pick out Frankie in a crowd of people you’d never be able to. His looks only existed in your imaginations.
“Do you have pain killer amigo?” A man in a flannel walked in your direction, a baseball cap on his head to most likely tame the curls that threatened to peek out, rubbing his head.
“Just grab a bottle. Got a headache?”
The man you assumed to be Frankie shrugged. “It’s just loud in my head is all.”
Loud...oh.
“Would be easier if she could tell me why this was happening.”
You gasped, dropping the basket you were holding and drawing the attention of the men, your hands shaking from the thoughts that were going through your head. It wasn’t a mistake. This wasn’t just another man who’s name happened to be Frankie, and you weren’t going insane after all. He was here. In front of you. And suddenly you couldn’t think of anything to say.
Think…
“I like the one on the top shelf the most.”
Sending thoughts his way only seemed to work at odd times and you hoped that he heard you. Hoped that you were indeed correct. His hand reached for the one at the top shelf, glancing at the bottle before turning around to stop at the sight of you. The basket, still in a heap at your feet; tears in your eyes.
“Frankie?” you asked, voice wavering.
The breath was knocked from his lungs, a blow to his heart as well as every other part of him, because he knew that voice. Knew it better than he knew his own. Had heard it at every dark point in his life; the guiding angel that dragged him back to the living.
“It’s you,” he said, the bottle of painkillers now forgotten.
“Hi.” You weren’t quite sure to say. What do you say to someone whose voice has occupied your mind for years?
He stepped closer, needed to feel you, needing to know that this wasn’t some figment of his imagination. “Y/N,” he mumbled, seeing the way your face lit up at the sound of your name.
“Odd place to meet at a grocery store,” you said, watching as he came closer.
He smiled and it was even better than you imagined it to be. “Worth it.”
“Definitely worth it.”
It was probably a bad idea, but Frankie didn’t give a shit anymore. Because all he could think about was your voice in his head as he fought through nightmares. Through his addiction. As he tried not to die. Your voice that had kept him sane through all these years. Cupping your face he kissed you lightly at first, waiting to see how it would be received. You might push him off for all he knew.
A small noise of surprise left you, but you knocking the cap off his head, your fingers tangling in his mess of curls, told him that you wanted this just as much as he did. Because he was there for you just as much as you were for him. Through the hard nights of being lonely, through wondering if this was all worth it. He was there.
Frankie. Your one true love.

A trope that gets to me: 'guard dog' character and their partner who are both fully aware of it and honestly don't care/kind of like it. Someone says "call your guard dog off" and their partner does call them off. That person, their 'guard dog', is someone who is unreservedly, irrefutably loyal to them. Someone undoubtedly dangerous who is willing to kill, to maim, to obey, simply because of their love for one another. There's no manipulation involved— it is loyalty, brutal, dogged loyalty. And it goes both ways.
