Julian's weird hang-up with magic is so fucking funny to me bc like. He has a personal connection to one of the Major Arcana, something I IMAGINE takes a considerable amount of raw magical ability. He probably has way more magical power in him than the average person. On top of that, he has a familiar, something that also seems to take a considerable amount of magical ability.

The kicker is: I don't think this man knows what a familiar is and I KNOW he doesn't know Malak is his familiar. He literally only understands Malak ONCE and that's when he and MC have been forced out of their bodies. Half the time he refers to Malak as 'the bird' and it makes me want to cry and laugh at the same time because JULIAN DO YOU THINK IT'S NORMAL FOR A WILD ANIMAL TO JUST FOLLOW YOU AROUND AND ALERT YOU WHEN THE PALACE GUARDS ARE AROUND???? How the fuck did they meet. Malak took one look at this gangly idiot and went "ah yes, this one. I feel a connection with him," and Julian just went "oh hey, bird. Neat."

MC refers to Malak as Julian's familiar and he's like, "familiar? What's that?" and MC doesn't know whether to laugh or cry. They settle on teaching him how to deepen his connection with Malak so he can understand him.

Gods no wonder Malak is a little ball of frazzled nerves and feathers his stupid human can't understand him.
