I just realized
The 3 Swedes in the Umbrella academy , are like the 3 Swedes in the novel “ The Beach “ by Alex Garland .
( Spoilers )
Even their fate is similar . Out of the 3 , one survives and two die .
Run
And then I ran . Why did I run ? You see sometimes you run just so . You’re simply going somewhere minding your own business and a wish rushes through you . You set of in a sprint . There’s no big reason behind it . You run to feel the wind on your face , to feel your hair jumping behind you in disarray , you run to feel how your heart starts pumping faster and faster , your legs weighting down . You run to feel yourself cut through time and space , even if just for an itsy bitsy tiny little part . You run to feel . Sometimes when I’m going home or from some errands usually im the evening , I set of in the quickest sprint I can manage , snaking my way through the people on the street and accelerating accelerating accelerating . Not because I’m a runner . I don’t go jogging in my free time at all , I don’t pursue it as sport . But I run because I can .
“It’s weird.”
“What’s weird ?“
“Humans have a closer relationship with the dead than they do with the living.”
“Elaborate on that.”
“Well did you ever notice how they honour their deceased?
“…”
“ They decorate the remains of the being and then put it in a wooden box. That wooden box they then proceed to put in a small stone monument with some identification of the human. Sometimes they burn them instead. It varies from culture to culture. After that they repeatedly visit the remains and … how should I vocalise that… relive the memories they shared with that being ?“
“ But doesn’t that destroy the natural cycle of returning minerals into the soil ?“
“ It does. It also damages their emotional sensors yet they still do it.
“ Huh.“
“ But it’s not just about the weird boxing ritual. It’s about the process altogether. Humans give much more value to death than they do to life.”
“Can you give an example ?“
“Plenty. Their soldiers, their authors. Even their friends. While alive they do indeed get acknowledged. But when they die that acknowledgment doubles, even triples in size. It seems humans are blind to most of their possessions and are only able to see them after their loss.
“ That is quite bizarre. But if I can give you a word of advice - do not get too close to human psychology. A lot of minds were lost that way. “
“ …..I will accost your concern.”
What do you think , if some people gathered together today and avoided corona for ten or more days while living somewhere off and telling stories to each other ( aka, Dekameron , Giovanni Boccaccio style ) what the hell would they talk / tell stories about ?
Merlin in Hogwarts
No , but can you imagine- the one and only , almighty wizard , known for centuries as a legend , so famous his name is used as an exclamation yet so old the truth about him actually being alive is forgotten . Shows up at Hogwarts.
Because if you are an almighty immortal wizard , waiting for some *cough- pratish cough cough king to return , you would absolutely do weird and crazy pranks on everybody .
I can just imagine a young boy , seemingly out of nowhere arriving at Hogwarts . And of course Hogwarts is very organized and they should know where he came from , but hey , he has everything ready for studying and they just don’t have the time to check every student , so he just begins his studying with a wide grin . Sure something seems off , but the teachers just hope it’s nothing Voldemort-big and go on . But time passes and teachers do notice some weird stuff. Like the fact that after his arrival dragons come flying near Hogwarts which were not seen for centuries and the monsters in the lake stir more than usual . And that this small boys wand looks more like a miniaturized staff and the fact that he was seen casting spells no one has ever heard , but hey , who are they to judge .
And Merlin enjoys it so much . He was so caught up in all the history and mourning that he forgot how great it felt to be young and have friends . Though it is confusing for him when there are lots of “ oh Merlin “ or “ Merlins beard !“ exclamations going on .
And heck yeah he pranks everyone and tells them he is the real Merlin and he’s almighty , but everyone just takes it as a joke and laughs . So he pranks teachers and casts spells that mess up Hogwarts and all but everyone just adores him and thinks he’s cute.
Until one time something comes up and they realize : oh shit . He is the real Merlin
Sometimes life gives you the job of a photographer .
You take the picture but youre not in it .
Another “ humans are weird idea “
Imagine how the aliens would react to Halloween decorations.
Like , they come to visit and everything is going fine , humans are so interesting , look mostly kind and not threatening. And then they just see how a human begins to decorate their house with dead caskets of humans and other parts . Of course they notice it’s fake but still the fact that these beings just casually drop off the representation of a dead human somewhere around their living habitat and seem to enjoy it ..... horrors aliens .Not to mention some other humans that buy specialy made food that looks like - their- organs ,and eat it .
whispering to yourself
“ just 80 more years , hold it through , just 80 more years “
Really helps the motivation
The “ complicated “ones are the most simple to understand once you crack them . They are complicated in the way everything is, with traits, fears, trauma, history . Yet once you crack them it is pretty easy to see where everything is coming from .
It’s the “ simple “ ones that break you head. Because from the outside they are nothing but a clear, allowing you to perceive them as something simple. Yet when you get to know them, their thoughts and motives turn out to be more twisted and weird than the “ complicated” ones. Their world looks out of place, messed up. But how if they seemed so simple ?
I feel like this is both about people , characters and lego.
