VI. Midnight Circles

By four o’clock in the morning the two sisters had created what they thought was a solid plan in how to break the news to their mom. The most important part of the plan was that they should definitely wait until morning, rather than waking her up at nearly four in the morning.

“Could you sleep with me tonight?” Mitsuko asked as she slipped into bed, unwilling for Hoshiko to leave her side just yet. She didn’t want her to disappear again.

“I can’t…” Hoshiko replied, her face suddenly distressed. “I mean, I can’t sleep.”

“At all?”

She nodded before elaborating further, “I tried to, yesterday, but… nothing.”

“Could you…” Mitsuko hesitated for a moment. “Lie with me anyway?”

The younger sister simply smiled at her sister softly before stepping forward and sinking into the empty space next to Mitsuko. The eldest pulled the cover over them before reaching across and pulling the younger sister close.

However, as soon as Hoshiko was pulled close to Mitsuko’s throat, she tensed suddenly in her sister’s arms. Concerned, she pulled away to look at her sister in concern, only to be met by dark black eyes.

“Hoshi, is everything okay?” She asked her sister, who still hadn’t moved.

“You smell so…” Suddenly Hosiko interrupted herself by nearly flinging herself across the room, hitting the wall behind, causing the house to shake.

Mitsuko stood to follow her sister but was stopped by a deep growl coming from the younger girl, “Stay back!”

“I don’t under—“ This time Mitsuko was cut off by a furious pounding on their front door.

The two sisters were still for a moment, staring at each other as they listened to banging on the door. As they simply stood there, the distinct sound of their mom's door opening echoed through the house, followed quickly by her footsteps.

“Mom!” Mitsuko called out, moving to her door and stepping out from her room, her sister cautiously following behind her, still keeping a sizeable distance.

By the time the sisters had moved from her room and downstairs, their mom was already at the door and opened it.

“Doctor Cullen?” Their mom said as she opened the door, “It’s the middle of the night!”

“I am aware, Mrs Tanaka; apologies for disturbing you,” Carlisle said with a neutral expression. “I need to speak to your daughters.”

“I’m Carlisle, but only Mitsuko is here; Hoshi is—“

“Right here!” Hoshiko spoke up, stepping forward with her eyes now narrowed at the people at the door. Carlisle wasn’t alone; next to him on either side stood Emmett and Jasper.

Not noticing the sudden tension, Chiyo quickly turned her head to look at her youngest daughter. “Hoshiko… Where have you been? I’ve been worried sick!”

Yet before she could approach her daughter, Carlisle grabbed her arm and pulled her closer to him. “Mrs Tanaka, please stay where you are.”

As Carlisle pulled Chiyo behind him, Jasper stepped forward, eyes focused on Mitsuko as she stood in front of her sister. “Mitsuko, please come here.”

“No.” She refused, “She’s not going to hurt me!”

“Suki…” She turned to face her younger sister, who was looking at her with a deeply pained expression. “You should go stand with them.”

Mitsuko took a moment to look at her sister, really look at her. Alongside the pained expression on her face, Mitsuko realised that Hoshiko was gripping the bannister of the stairs so strongly that she was nearly snapping the wood in half.

Suddenly she found her body becoming stiff and beginning to move without her trying, turning around and walking towards where Jasper and Emmett were standing. As she got closer to them, she felt a cold hand softly wrap around her wrist before pulling her the rest of the way. Now she found herself hidden behind Jasper, who was standing protectively between her and her little sister.

“Will someone tell me what is happening?” Chiyo exclaimed as she looked rapidly between her two daughters in concern.

"I'm afraid we can't tell you…" Carlisle responded cryptically, "But it's imperative your daughters come with us right now."

Instead, she forcefully pointed at the doctor, something she usually only did to her daughters when they were in trouble. “No, they’re not going anywhere until you tell me what is going on.”

“I’m a vampire now, aren’t I?” Hoshiko suddenly questioned, causing everyone’s attention to shift towards her again. “I’ve read Dracula before; I’m not stupid.”

Mitsuko noticed her mom become quiet at Hoshiko’s question, her body stock still at the mention of vampires. Yet before she could ask her, she was interrupted when Carlisle spoke up again, “Mrs Tanaka I really must insist that your daughters come with us right now.”

“But it’s four in the morning!” She spoke again, gesturing to herself as a way to emphasise that she was currently only in a nightgown.

“Listen, we need to get her out of here before a certain group finds Hoshiko here.” Jasper spoke with authority, speaking to them all as if they were officers in the army. “So get dressed if you have to, but we need to leave now.”

This was how Mitsuko found herself sitting in the back of Carlisle Cullen’s car, Jasper next to her as a way to separate the two sisters, something she still didn’t understand was necessary.

Within ten minutes they were already pulling up in front of the Cullens’ woodland house. Outside stood the rest of the Cullen family; they were in a uniformed line and clearly on guard.

When Mitsuko stepped out, she was quickly accosted by Alice and Emilie, who pulled her between them and held her firmly in place. Jasper followed, now standing behind her, creating a protective triangle.

“Why’d you bring her? She’s just a stupid human.” Rosalie had muttered quietly, yet despite being on the other side of the semicircle, Mitsuko heard her crystal clear and bristled slightly.

“Hey!” She couldn’t help but yell at the blonde, whose eyes widened slightly in surprise, “There’s no need to be rude!”

“How did you—“ “Rosalie.” Carlisle interrupted before she could finish her question, “Not now; we have something more important to discuss.”

At that moment, Hoshiko finally stepped out of the car but stayed stock still in front of it. Her eyes flittered between each person with a cold, calculated look in a way Mitsuko had seen her do countless times, usually when she felt trapped.

“We’re not here to hurt you,” Edward spoke up, seemingly reading her distress. “We just want to know what happened.”

Yet before Hoshiko could even begin to explain, Edward’s face changed, and he spoke again, “She found the army.”

“In Seattle?”

“Someone turned her, but she didn’t see who; the only person in her memories I recognise is Riley Biers.”

“What do you mean by her memories?” Mitsuko spoke up again, “Matter of fact, nothing you’re saying is making any sense. Can someone please explain?”

“Hoshiko is right,” Carlisle began to explain. “She has been turned into a vampire, just like my family and I.”

Pause.

“You’re saying my sister is a vampire now?” She asked, “Like from Buffy?”

“We’re way cooler than that.” Emmett spoke with a grin, earning a small slap on the back of his head from Rosalie.

“Right… But wait,” she continued, giving Emmett a small smile before continuing, “Was I attacked by a vampire that night?”

She tried to ignore how Jasper stiffened behind her at the mention of that night and moved to take his hand into hers, providing a comfort she instinctively wanted to give.

“You saw Riley that night, didn’t you?” Edward asked her, but it was clear he already knew the answer.

“Yeah, he seemed… different, angrier. I don’t think he even fully recognised me.”

“He's a newborn, still within his first year,” Carlisle began to explain. “He wouldn’t have been in full control of himself.”

Her face furrowed in thought as she tried to remember that night; in all the fury and violence, there was one thing that was clear: Riley’s teeth sinking into her neck. So she asked the question, “Does everyone that gets bitten turn into a vampire?”

“To my knowledge, yes.”

That made Mitsuko pause in thought, nervously wetting her lips before speaking, Then why didn’t I?”

At her question, she noticed how Carlisle glanced from her to Jasper with an indecipherable expression before looking back to her, answering honestly, “We don’t know yet.”

Turning around, she narrowed her eyes in suspicion as she analysed the expression on Jasper’s face, which seemed to be intentionally as neutral as possible. They weren’t telling her something.

So after letting out a small huff, she pulled her hand away from his own and began to walk away back towards her sister. She only made it one step before a strong pair of arms reached out and pulled her backwards into his solid form.

“That’s a bad idea, darling,” Jasper's voice drawled in her right ear, “You’re going to be good and stay right by me.”

She tried not to let his words affect her; after all, this was neither the time nor the place. She didn’t try hard enough.

“I was just…” Mitsuko trailed off awkwardly as she made eye contact with Emmett, who began waggling his eyebrows suggestively.

Now embarrassed, she tried to pull away again, to which Jasper tightened his grip. It wasn’t enough to hurt her, but it was enough for Mitsuko to fully understand just how strong he was.

So strong. She wondered what else he could do with those hands.

Despite her best efforts, all her mind could think about now was possibilities, like how possible would it be for Jasper to use those hands the right way if Mitsuko begged sweetly enough? Maybe she could get him to put his hands on her-

On the other side of the group, Edward began to choke on thin air. Mitusko thought it almost sounded like he was gagging. The others simply ignored the boy's struggling.

"Is he okay?" She asked which was simply answered with a collective laugh from the family.

As the laughter died down, Carlisle explained once more, "Edward can read minds."

"Oh…" If her cheeks could get any redder, she looked severely sunburnt.

“Unfortunately”, Edward spoke up from where he had finished fake gagging.

“He’s just being dramatic,” Alice spoke up, trying to comfort Mitsuko. “I’m sure what you were thinking wasn’t that bad.”

Edward started gagging again.

“Will you stop that, Edward?” Rosalie yelled at her adoptive brother, “God, you are always so fucking annoying.”

“Hello, teenage vampire going through a crisis here.” Hoshiko waved to the group, causing them to quieten down. “Could we please get back on topic?”

Mitsuko blinked to rewire her brain. “Sorry, you’re right.” She spoke, turning to Carlisle once more, “What exactly is the plan here?”

Before he spoke this time, Carlisle turned to Esme, waiting for her to nod and then stepping forward, “We’re willing to offer you a place in our family. You’d stay with us and learn to control your lust for blood, but we would expect you to follow our diet.”

She tilted her head in confusion, “What’s that?”

“We don’t drink human blood and hunt animals instead.” He clarified.

“I’m okay with that,” She agreed immediately, a haunted look appearing on her face. “The things I saw when I first woke up… well, I’d rather not talk about it.”

“We’ve all been in similar situations, Hoshiko; we understand,” Esme spoke, stepping forward, only turning back to reassure Carlisle, who had instinctually reached out to pull her back. Walking forwards until she was in front of Hoshiko, “In time, if you like, we can talk about it together.”

If she could cry, the younger Tanaka would have tears brimming in her eyes, “That would be nice.”

Ever the maternal figure, Esme didn’t hesitate before pulling Hoshiko into her arms and hugging her with nearly all her strength. The fledgling vampire could have sworn her now-diamond skin creaked from how hard she was hugging her, yet she could not help but lean in further into the embrace.

Still standing in Jasper’s arms, Mitsuko couldn’t help as the tears flowed; they were both her own and on behalf of her sister. She felt a jumble of emotions in that moment: sadness, confusion, relief and happiness. Yet as seconds went by, she felt an overwhelming sense of calm through her, and clarity hit her. Turning around one more time, she looked intently into Jasper’s golden eyes.

“It’s been you the whole time, hasn’t it?”

Jasper seemed hesitant to explain, “I can control people’s emotions, but I’ve only ever used it on you as a way to calm you.”

“I’m not mad.” She responded instantly, leaning further into him, “But could you ask me for permission next time?”

“Oh,” he said, surprised by her response, “Of course, if that’s what you want me to do.”

Mitsuko nodded before turning back to look at her sister as her small smile drooped into a frown. Jasper stepped around and looked at her from the side. “What’s wrong?”

“Will I ever be able to be near my sister again?” She whispered to him in hopes he would be the only one to hear.

Yet it seemed since she was in the know about vampires, the Cullens had decided to drop all pretences. From the complete other side of the large circle the group had formed, Edward decided to speak up, “It might be for the best.”

“What kind of suggestion is that?” She yelled out once more, stepping forward; this time Jasper decided to let her go. “She’s my sister; you can’t just expect me to abandon her!”

“She’s a newborn,” Edward hissed at her as he stepped forward. “She’s at the strongest but most uncontrollable she will be as a vampire.”

Yet, Mitsuko wasn’t one to be pushed around, so she stepped closer. “We’re sisters; we’d never hurt each other.”

“It would take much; it wouldn’t even have to be on purpose.” Edward pushed closer, now fully encroaching on her space. “I mean, it wouldn’t even take me a second to kill you. Think what a newborn at full strength could do.”

Within a millisecond, Jasper was at Mitsuko's side, pulling her behind him as he growled furiously at Edward, “Who do you think you’re threatening?”

At the same time, Hoshiko yelled out, “Back away from my sister, arsehole!”

He stood his ground for a moment longer before the rapidly darkening look on Jasper’s face made him back away, but not before speaking again. “She needs to understand how dangerous this is.”

“I think she’s already well aware of that.” The blonde spoke in a dangerously measured tone, “Or are you forgetting what she’s already been through?”

Feeling overshadowed in the conversation, Mitsuko leaned around Jasper slightly to emphasise, “Not that it’ll work anyway.” Before she was gently pushed back again.

Edward continued to stare at Jasper for a moment longer, his eyes flicking to Mitsuko behind him, to which she decided to flip him off. By this point it was clear that the tension would not be diffused by any three of them, so Carlisle stepped forward.

“That’s enough,” he spoke firmly, but his face remained soft. “We have larger issues at hand; I see no reason for Hoshiko and Mitsuko to spend time together so long as one of us supervises.”

“Carlisle”. Edward pushed back at his creator.

“We welcomed Bella with open arms into this family.” He responded instead, “ I expect you to do the same for Mitsuko.”

“You can just call me Suki!” She called out from behind Jasper again, earning a bewildered smile from Carlisle before he spoke again.

“I expect you to do the same for Suki.” The girl in question smiled widely at his correction.

It was a moment before Edward finally conceded with a forced, “Fine.” Before he turned around and ran deep into the woods.

“Where the hell is he going?” Hoshiko asked with a confused tone.

“Probably to visit Bella,” Esme explained, “He stays with her most nights.”

Once Jasper deemed Edward far enough away, he turned around and lifted Mitsuko’s chin up so she was looking at him. “Are you okay there, darling?”

She was awestruck by his touch; his presence was so overwhelming to her, but all she wanted to do was step closer and breathe him in. Instead, her body shook from the cold, and she let out a small yawn. After sighing slightly at the fact she ruined a potential moment, she spoke, her voice quiet and clearly drained, “Tired.”

Jasper smiled again. She’d liked it when he smiled, especially when he smiled at her. God, she was tired.

“Yeah, I think we should get you home.” He spoke, reaching forward to place his hand against her forehead, and Mitsuko leaned forward into his freezing touch instantly.

“You’re so cold,” she shivered, yet before he pulled away, she reached forward and grabbed his hand. “No, no, no, it’s nice... you feel so nice."

Before she could run her mouth anymore, Jasper wrapped his arms around her before hoisting her up and carrying her back towards the silver car. "Right, let's get you in the car."

"M'kay," she said as she burrowed further into his chest and closed her eyes, sleep quickly taking over.

Carefully, Jasper opened the door to the car and was able to settle her in the front passenger seat. After making sure she was buckled in and draping his jacket over her sleeping form, he took his place in the driver's seat.

Before he could pull away, though, a knock on the window caused him to turn and come face to face with Hoshiko’s suspicious glare. With a neutral expression, Jasper rolled down the window and simply stared.

“I need you to promise me something,” she said firmly, before her face softened, “Take care of my sister.”

He answered without hesitation, “Always.”

Spin-Off Oneshot of my main series: Doing Time

Hana gets roped into going to comic con, but at least she has good company

After the team was given a whole week to recuperate after a particularly challenging case. Penelope had spontaneously asked Hana to come with to a ‘science convention’, but this wasn’t what she had in mind. As it turns out Penelope had neglected the ‘fiction’ part of a Sci-Fi shows convention. So here Hana stood outside waiting to enter the convention centre, standing next to Penelope and Spencer who were both dressed in Doctor Who related costumes.

Unaware of the dress up plan, Hana was dressed a simple red shirt and black jeans combo. The leather jacket draped across her shoulders protected her skin from the intense solar rays.

“Is it always this crowded?” She asked Spencer, knowing he’d have the answers she was looking for.

“Well statistically, New York Comic Con takes around two hundred thousand attendees a year.” He began to explain, “So yeah I guess you could say it’s always this crowded.”

“Great.” Hana sighed already feeling slightly claustrophobic as the line continued moving. She suddenly stumbled forward slightly when the group behind her got too excited and knocked into her accidentally, but was thankfully caught by Spencer. She uttered a small thanks as the doctor kept his hand firmly on the small of her back, pushing her in front of him.

“You okay sweetie?” Penelope asked, turning around at the commotion.

“Yeah don’t worry,” she waved her friend off, “It was just an accident and Spencer caught me before I fell on my face.”

The lovable blonde smiled brightly at her friend’s assurance, “Good, I’m so excited there’s so many places I want to check out.”

Hana listened intently as her two friends talked animatedly about all the different features of the convention they were most excited to see. While she didn’t understand half of the stuff they were taking about, she was just happy to see them happy too. Security was relatively easy process, especially since Penelope had strictly advised Hana not to bring her firearm. She had still brought her official badge though just in case, which raised some eyebrows from the older man that had checked her small bag of belongings.

When the trio were finally able to make their way into the main hall Hana was blown away at the grandiose nature of this event. Banners hung from basically anywhere you could hang a banner, dozens of signs directed people around the entire building of which the event was held, and the crowds were giant.

Despite her friend’s excited and easy going attitude, Hana was still tense. There was so much happening around her, so many sounds, smells and sights. For someone trained to be aware of everyone around her and spending so long with the BAU it was difficult to relax.

“So where are we going first?” She asked, before Spencer grabbed her hand to keep her close.

“Penelope wants to check out all the stalls in the artists alley.” He explained as he led her forward.

“What’s that?”

“Oh, it’s where independent artists have small stalls set up to sell different things they’ve made whether it’s paintings or knit work.” He explained without any signs of annoyance at her lack of knowledge, “Maybe you’ll find something cool too.”

Spencer, as always, was right. At a stall tucked in the corner of the artists alley Hana found a stunning painting depicting one of her favourite movies she’d watched as a kid.

“You watched Friday the thirteenth at five years old?” Spencer asked in amusement, after the young agent had explained her interest in the portrait of Jason Voorhees.

“Yeah!” She stated, still walking hand in hand, “I mean there wasn’t much else to do in the middle of the woods, so I convinced Grisha to buy a dvd player.”

“So you like horror?” He asked, making sure Hana didn’t get too focused on her past.

“Oh I love horror especially the supernatural stuff.” Spencer noticed her eyes sparkled when she was excited. “I mean have you haven’t lived until you’ve had a horror movie binge on halloween.”

“I agree.”  He nodded as he spoke, before pointing with his free hand to where Penelope stood excitedly talking with one the artists at their stall. “We should catch up her before she disappears.”

She smirked slightly before replying, “I know someone would not be happy if we lost his ‘Baby Girl’”.

Spencer laughed loudly at Hana’s quip his eyes crinkling at the edges as he smiled widely. Her smirked morphed into a smile, watching his reaction.

As the pair approached their friend, Penelope turned around and waved them over enthusiastically. While both began to increase their pace, Spencer 6’1 height compared to Hana’s 5’2 meant that she ended up being dragged behind him. They had almost made their way over to the brightly dressed blonde, when Hana stopped suddenly causing Spencer to also stop and looked back towards the dark haired woman.

She’d stopped in front an artist’s stall two down from the one Penelope was in front of, most notably Hana was staring in awe at a hand knitted plush of a fruit bat. Like with the Jason painting, Spencer noticed that her sparkled with joy as she let go of his hand to picked the plush. He could tell how much she wanted it.

So, he asked the artist the price and pulled the right amount of notes from his wallet. Hana then looked up to asked the seller the price, earning a simple reply of, “He already bought.” As they pointed at Spencer.

“You bought this for me?” Hana asked as she held the little bat close to her chest with her right arm.

“Consider it a birthday present.” He shrugged before taking her free hand again and leading her over to Penelope, who was still waiting.

“You do know my birthday isn’t for another four months right?”

“I know.”

“You know what?” Penelope asked as she met the pair half-way

“Penn look what Spence bought me!” The younger agent explained as she showed her friend the adorable bat plush.

“Oh my god that is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.” Penelope squealed as she looked at the plush, “Usually I think bats are icky and weird but this is really cute.”

“What did you call us over for?”

“Yes I forgot,” She began as she dug three small things from her purse, “I bought us matching keyrings”

“Is that the-“ Spencer began asked as Penelope handed them one each.

“Tardis?” She finished his sentence before continuing, “Yep it sure is and if you press it makes the noise.”

Hana scrunched her nose in confusion, “The noise?”

As if to showcase it, Spencer pressed the button on his keyring and Hana looked one in surprise as it began to make a strange whirring noise and lit up. She let out a simple “huh” in reply before gently placing the keyring in her small bag.

The trio spent the rest of the day touring the entire exhibition hall, Hana was still amazed at the sheer scale of this event in front of her. There was even a promotional stall for a game Hana had never heard of, but it had a virtual shooting range so Hana was naturally drawn to it. She also enjoyed the shock and applause she received from the people around her when she achieved a perfect score.

All in all, it was a perfect but tiring day. They’d stayed until latest as possible, which it was already slightly dark when they made their way to the Uber that would take them back to hotel they’d booked for the weekend. Sliding in second, she found herself sandwiched between Spencer and Penelope, and despite her best efforts her eyes grew heavy and she soon found herself asleep.

With her eyes closed, Hana missed the soft smile from Spencer as her head slip to fall on his shoulder. He didn’t move for the entire journey back.

Chapter 1. Looking at me

Back to Masterlist

In which Hana goes to a job interview at the FBI which is 'totally' where an ex Assassin should work. Chapter Title: Looking at Me by Sabrina Carpenter

Hana first day was as uneventful as one could be as a BAU candidate, she'd exited the lift to what she hoped was the correct floor and approached the front desk. She was clutching the strap of her small black bag tightly in her hand.

"Hey, is this the BAU?" She asked the young woman at the front who was likely around her age.

"No this is Baskin Robbins how can I help you today" she replied not looking up from her phone.

"Well can you either get me a ice cream or point me in the right direction otherwise I can go elsewhere"

She look up at her for the first time seemingly impressed someone had actually played along with her. "Not bad, we'll get along just nice. Oh and don't worry you're in the right place. Just through those doors" she pointed towards the glass doors just to the right of the main desk.

"Perfect thank you so much..."

"Gerry"

"Thank you Gerry, I'm Hana"

"Have a good day Hana" she smiled, waving her off before glancing back down to her phone.

Hana moved away from the front desk and entered through the glass a look around the large bullpen. There were at least ten main desk scattered around the room, and on the higher platform section there were seemingly three rooms. Hana presumed these were the rooms for the section chief, supervisor and of course the conference room.

As she was looking around Hana was soon approached by a tall man who was well dressed in a simple smart suit, his badge on display showed the named A. Hotchner; Unit chief.

"Can I help you?"

"Are you SSA Hotchner?"

"I am, and you are?"

"Oh okay, well I'm Hana Fedorov one of the new candidates ... I got an email saying I have a interview today"

"Of course thank you for coming, but I must let you know that we're currently on a case so it may be a long interview process."

"Not to worry sir, I'm known for my patience." Hana replied to the imposing man. Aaron was younger then she'd pictured, but was definitely someone of authority. He had a simple but smart haircut alongside a clean shaven face, and his wardrobe were all clearly a way to subconsciously make others know he was in control.

She subconsciously shook her head in order to stop herself from profiling further, she'd heard rumours in the academy about how the BAU wasn't all that fond on profiling their team mates; especially their bosses.

"So erm where should I wait?"

"Just outside are some seats, the other candidates should be there as-well" Hotchner said before pointing towards the glass entrance doors.

"Ok, thanks" she smiled brightly at the tall man before making her way out the doors he had pointed to. She immediately saw the line of candidates either sat or standing down the hallway, and as much as she'd deny it; Hana was a little intimidated. These people were older than she was by a significant amount in terms of experience both in life and on the field. In reality she had just as much experience too but she couldn't tell anyone what that experience is let alone the FBI.

Taking a deep breath as her father taught her, she stepped down the hallway and found a spare seat next to another woman. She took another deep breath, once she sat and placed her bag down in front of her legs.

"Nervous?" The woman next to her asked, causing Hana to turn towards her before answering.

"Just a little, I think I'm youngest one here..." She joked as she scanned.

"I'm just glad I'm not the oldest",at this both women turned to look at each other smiling softly, before falling into quiet laughs. "I'm Tara by the way"

"Nice to meet you, I'm Hana"

"Hmm both double a, sounds like fate"

"Maybe I'm not a huge believer in that"

"Well either way, I should get your number in case we never see each other after this. You seem a lot of fun"

"I'd like that", It was shame the BAU was one looking for one spot, it would've been nice for Hana and Tara to be teammates.

At that moment, Agent Hotchner came back out from the bullpen and approached the group again. "Can I have everyone's attention, please."

Everyone, including Hana and Tara, promptly turned their full attention towards the imposing figure stood by the glass doors.

"The BAU is working an active case, so this interview process may take some time." He explained before continuing,  "Does anyone need to return to their field office?"

After that majority of the group either shook their head or verbally responded no. Pleased with this response Hotchner turned towards Tara, "Good. Dr. Lewis, we'll start with you."

At this Tara quickly stood before she responded a simple "Absolutely." and moved to follow him through the glass doors, but not before turning back to Hana and waving bye.

After Tara left spent the next thirty minutes in the same seat reading through her past few messages on her phone. Most were from either her phone provider or random promotional offers that she opted to ignore. The one that she focused on was a message from a unknown number, likely from a burner phone. It simply read 'Been missing the Black Lion, are you ever coming back to play?' and Hana knew exactly who it had come from.

She had no intention of returning to her past she hadn't done a job since she was 17 and that was almost 8 years ago. After she'd been brought in and given a second chance, how could she throw it all away for people she hadn't seen in years. Also, those were the worst fucking years of her life. So fuck that.

With a sigh, Hana made the decision to quickly block the number and close her messages. Opting instead to play one of the random games she had on her phone, it wasn't very productive but it would at least pass the time and relax her.

Eventually she saw Tara come back through and make her way back over. "Hey!"

"Hey, how it go?"

"I think it went well. He said I had a good amount of experience"

Fuck.

"Oh really? That's sounds good"

There's no way Hana was getting this job.

"Yeah but who knows I was the first one interviewed anything can happen." She smiled softly at Hana. It was clear she was doing this to make her feel better but Hana knew that Tara was incredibly happy with how her interview went.

"Agent Fedorov" She quickly moved her head towards Hotchner at the end of the hall who had called her name. "You're next, if you'd just follow me"

"Okay... sure" Hana stood to follow him making sure she didn't leave anything behind. As she walked through the bullpen she noticed it was full of activity with people moving between the desks and speaking rapidly to each other. Whatever case the BAU were on was high profile that much was clear.

When Hotchner approached the door to his office he held the door open for her. As she stepped in first she couldn't help but analyse the room and in turn the man was interviewing her. The office was incredibly well kept and clearly belonged to someone in control, but there was also a single frame on the desk that although facing away from her, was clearly some form of family photo so he wasn't a complete robot.

"You can take a seat" He began as he took his own seat behind the desk. Once Hana a took one of the chairs opposite he continued, "I must say first of all you're not like the other candidates we have lined up"

"Young?"

"Yes but also, your past history is curious" He flipped open a file that was on his desk. "It seems there's no record of you before age 17. Why is that?"

Hana wondered if this how suspects felt in the interrogation room. "I was living in Russia for the first 16 years of my life, I was taken to the US after escaping a pretty bad situation."

"Do you have any records of your time Russia?"

"My father was off the grid, he hated the government so he refused to be on record" She let out a sigh before continuing, "It also meant he didn't want me on record. I mean I was homeschooled for most of my life"

"Well considering I must say I'm impressed by what you've achieved since." He flipped to another page as he continued, "You graduated at the top of your class at the academy and is currently one of our youngest agents active in the field"

"I was told to aim for greatness"

"Well with these credentials you could go on to do great things, so why join the BAU?"

Hana clenched her fists tightly as she thought of an answer, "I've seen a lot of bad things happen so I'm not ignorant to the type of people you guys deal with, and I wanna help be the reason those types are put away for good"

"You think you have what it takes? This job can be hard for most, let alone someone fresh from the academy"

"I know I do." She steeled her face making sure to show how serious she was, she could see that he was watching her carefully trying form some type of profile.

Yet before he could continue someone knocks on the door before entering. "We're ready to deliver the profile"

"Thanks, We'll be right there Rossi" Agent Rossi nodded before heading back out into the bullpen. "I want you to hear the profile too, all the candidates actually"

"Okay" Hana stood and followed Hotchner out into the main bullpen where she could all the other candidates crowded round the BAU as they stood waiting for the pair to join them. After spotting Tara in the crowd, Hana quickly made her way over and stood next to her. As she found her place Agent Morgan began the briefing

"The unsub that we're looking for is a contract killer who is doubling back to kill his former customers."

Fuck.

"This man is highly skilled and well-trained." continued Morgan "Under no circumstances should he be engaged without back-up."

"So is this a case of organised crime tying up loose ends?" Tara questioned bringing Hana's attention back to the room instead of the ringing in her ear.

"Organised crime's got nothing to do with this,

At least not in the traditional sense. " Agent Rossi answered before Dr Reid continued.

"In 2013, the bureau took down the silk road network " Hana had heard of this, the dark web was almost unusable during those months. Most people like her had to kick it old school. "Our initial assumption was that it was an encrypted online market for illegal drugs, which it was, but upon further inspection, we were stunned at the breadth of goods and services being traded online. Weapons, child porn, even hit men."

Hotchner then chimed in, "And the payment scheme was escrow based, in which the buyer would put down half as a deposit and the other half when the seller delivered."

By this point Hana was going through head of all her previous 'acquaintances', immediately striking off anyone she knew was either dead or incarcerated.

"We've now confirmed that all 3 victims hired the unsub over the past year through a similar escrow system."

"So why is he killing his old clients?"

"Hit men don't leave a message unless you pay them to." Rossi answered quickly, "The exception is to leave a warning for customers or competitors."

"This unsub suffered some sort of injury to his jaw or voice, most likely as a result of something these customers did. The pulcinella mask is his statement on revenge and justice" Dr Reid continued once again, Hana was impressed with how rapid fire and precise these guys were giving this profile.

"Betray the oath between customer and contractor and you pay the price. Now, normally a man with this kind of defect would attract attention." Reid continued to explain "The fact that he hasn't indicates that he has deep pockets and a network of resources at his disposal."

"Share this profile with your local divisions and with law enforcement." Hotch ended the briefing speaking directly to everyone in the room. "Search for escrow payments to match the unsub to his clients. One of those clients will be his next target."

At that everyone dispersed in various directions, while Hana followed quickly behind Hotchner as he made his way back to his office.

Chapter 5. Minor Complications

Mitsuko had been in the hospital for three more days before Dr. Cullen finally came in with the good news: she was going home.

Yet when Charlie walked through the door to collect her instead of her mom, her relief quickly turned into an uncertain sense of fear. As they walked down the hallway together, several nurses stopped what they were doing and looked at her in sympathy.

Surely nurses would look more relieved than sympathetic when a patient has been deemed healthy enough to leave? At least that's what Mitsuko thought.

It was worse when she got home. Her mom was home; her car was in the driveway, which meant she could've come to get her, but for some reason she didn't.

Charlie guided her into her house and straight into the living room, where her mother was sitting, but she wasn't alone. In the room, sitting on the opposite couch from where her mom was sitting, were two other officers. One of them had a notebook open with several lines of writing on its pages, but Mitsuko was too far away to see clearly what it said.

Her steps slowed until she halted just at the entryway of the living room; she looked around cautiously as she spoke, "What's going on?"

As she spoke, all heads moved to where she was standing; Charlie moved past her before turning back to her with a strange expression on his face, "Why don't you take a seat, kid?"

"No," she refused. "Just tell me what's going on!"

It was at this moment her mom stood and took a step towards her: "It's Hoshi."

The pit in her stomach grew. "What about Hoshi?"

"She left three days ago, said she was having a sleepover," her mom explained, choking up slightly as she spoke, "but she hasn't come home, and the girl she said she was staying with hasn't seen Hoshi since Monday last week."

The room grew silent as they awaited Mitsuko's reaction to the news, but she found herself frozen, unable to speak or even move her face. Concerned, her mom stepped forward and grabbed onto her arm, shaking her slightly to get her attention. "Miko, honey, do you understand what I told you?"

She shook herself slightly before finally responding, "Hoshi's gone missing?"

"I'm afraid so, kid," Charlie chimed in. "We've got officers canvassing the area, and we're also in touch with Seattle police in case she's ended up there."

Seattle. Of course.

At the mention of the city, Mitsuko's eyes shined with recognition. She thought back to the conversation she had those three days ago in the hospital room. Hoshi had promised she wouldn't do anything without her sister, but Mitsuko had forgotten how stubborn her little sister could be.

All she could do in that moment was slowly nod her head before speaking with a slight tremble, "I'm... going to head to my room."

She began walking away, only turning around when her mom called after her, "I just need some time to process... this."

Turning back around, she climbed the stairs and made her way into her room. Where she stayed for nearly two full days. After the second day, Angela and Jess had come to visit her, having heard the news and wanting to check on her.

Instead of seeing the usual smiling face, the two were greeted by the sight of Mitsuko staring intently at a map of Seattle she'd pulled up on her computer.

"Suki?" Angela had called in an attempt to get her attention, "Everyone's really worried about you; your mom says you haven't come out in two days."

When that didn't get a response, Jessica sighed and stomped over and yanked the computer's power cord from the wall. "Seriously, Suki, this isn't going to help anyone!"

That seemed to have gotten a reaction from Mitsuko, who twisted her head to face her friends with a dark expression.

"What do you want me to do, Jess?" Her eyes quickly filling with tears as her face crumbled. "I can't act like nothing has happened; she's gone!"

"We're not asking you to do that!" Jess argued back, "But we both know Hoshi wouldn't want you torturing yourself over trying to find her."

"I'm just so afraid she'll end up like..." She couldn't finish that sentence, but it was clear her friends understood at least to some degree. Yet they'd never understand just how much she didn't want Riley and Hoshiko to share the same fate.

"You shouldn't think like that." Jess chastised her again, "The investigation is still ongoing; for all we know, she's run off to watch one of those bands she likes so much on tour."

It was so like Jess to think that way; there was always a best-case scenario that she would remind people of. Maybe it was because she hadn't experienced much hardship, or maybe that was the only way Jess knew how to comfort her friends.

"Maybe you're right," Mitusko finally admitted, "I just can't stand the thought of her being alone and hurt somewhere."

Angela stepped forward again, pulling her friend into a tight hug. "We know, but we, as your friends, have a responsibility to make sure you're okay."

All she could do was nod before burying her face into her friend's shoulder. They stayed like that for a few minutes, with Jess eventually joining in and making it a group hug. After a while they pulled away, and Angela gently reached out to wipe away her friend's tears.

"How about we have a nice night in and watch a cheesy chick flick?" She suggested, to which Mitsuko smiled softly and nodded.

The three of them spent the night curled up on Mitsuko's bed as Legally Blonde played on the small TV in her room. When the movie had finished, it was already dark, so Angela and Jess bid their friend goodbye and left.

With her friends gone, the silence became suffocating once again, but the presence of her friends had helped heal at least a little bit of the damage in Mitsuko's heart.

She'd finally crawled out of bed to have a quick shower, groan in pleasure from finally feeling clean again. With her hair still wet, she'd then thrown her pyjamas on and shuffled back under the covers. After only a few minutes, she felt herself drifting off in a deep slumber.

Knock knock knock

Mitsuko's eyes flew open at the sound of the furious banging against her bedroom window. Disoriented, she glanced at the clock on her bedside table to see it read 3:46 am.

Thinking it was just the branches of the tree outside hitting against the glass, she simply pulled the cover over her tighter and closed her eyes. Thankfully she was tired enough that it didn't take long for her to begin drifting again.

Knock knock knock

The banging continued, but it seemed to be getting louder and more frequent. This time she sat up and reached over to flick on her bedside lamp. It took a few moments for her eyes to adjust before she could stand and slowly approach her window. It was too dark for her to see what was outside, so all she could do was unlatch it and swing it open.

The moment she did, she was almost knocked to the ground when a large body jumped in through the now open window. Before she could shout in alarm, a cold hand covered a mouth, followed by a harsh hiss.

"Shhh," The voice whispered, "It's me, Suki. It's just me."

Her eyes focused on the face in front of her, and her breath hitched in surprise. She tried to speak but was muffled under the hand on her mouth. "Hoshi?"

"If I move my hand away, you're not going to scream, are you?" Her sister asked, to which all she could do was nod.

The hand was slowly removed from her mouth as Hoshiko took a step away, keeping what she deemed a safe distance from her older sister. The distance also allowed Mitsuko to fully take in her sister's appearance.

Although she looked similar to how she did only a few days ago, she was also somehow completely unrecognisable. Yet the thing that stuck out the most, the thing that made the pit settle back in Mitsuko's stomach, was her eyes. The once dark brown, almost pitch black, was gone, replaced by a startling crimson red. Just like Riley's.

"What happened to you?" Was all she could say, breaking the silence that had fallen between them.

"I don't know..." Hoshiko muttered, even her voice was different, "It's all just like a blur; one moment I'm talking to you in the hospital, and the next I'm... burning."

She bit her lip from her nerves before speaking again, "Hoshi, your eyes are..."

"I know..." her sister spoke, "I saw them in a mirror, not long after I woke up."

The expression of absolute confusion and defeat on her sister's face made Mitsuko's heart ache once more. Without thinking, she took several rapid steps forward before pulling her little sister into her arms.

"Fuck..." She couldn't help but cry out when the rock-hard body slammed into her, "Sorry, you're like a boulder."

"Yeah, sorry about that." Her sister rested her head on her shoulder but kept her hands at her side, not trusting her newfound strength. "Turns out I'm like super strong or something now."

Mitsuko pulled back from the hug to look at her sister once more. "How did you even get back here?"

"I ran." Was all Hoshiko willing to say at the moment, "I think I have super speed too."

"Are you saying you've turned into some kind of superhero or something?"

"I think mutant might be a more accurate description." Hoshiko joked, a small smile on her face.

"Shit." The oldest said, looking down with a stressed expression, her hands going to rest on her hips.

"Yeah, I know." She sighed, running her hand through her hair. "But I think with some practice, I can learn to control it.

Instead of agreeing, Mitsuko shook her head before speaking again, "No, I mean how are we gonna tell Mom about this?"

Pause.

"Shit."

Chapter 3. Zitti E Buoni

Back to Masterlist

Hana sees the BAU’s plane for the first time and holy shit is it nice. See end note for translations. Chapter Title: Zitti E Buoni by Maneskin

It was three days before the BAU was assigned a new case, it would be Hana's first real case with the team. She'd woken up an hour before she had to leave, making sure she had plenty of time to get ready.

After she'd taken a morning shower, she dressed in a simple pair of black trousers paired with a deep velvet red shirt. Her makeup with light, but finished with a deep red lip.  She styled her hair up carefully before grabbing her "go-bag" as Hotcher had referred to it as.

As she step out her room she heard music playing from the Kitchen, and when she turned the corner she saw her roommate; Sasha.

"Morning Sasha!" Hana yelled over the music still playing from the flat's speaker.

"Hana!" Sasha turned towards her smiling brightly, "You're never normally up this early? Do you want breakfast I'm making omelettes."

"Although omelettes sound amazing right now, I've been called in for work." She stated indicating to bag on her shoulder.

"For a case?"

"Yes."

"Oh my god this is your first real case with the BAU, when you get back we are totally celebrating." Sasha cheered loudly before hugging Hana tightly.

"Sasha."

"Huh?"

"I think your omelette is burning."

"Oh shit!" She quickly raced back to the stove and made sure to flipped the omelette before too much damage was done, "What would I do without you?"

"Be charged for arson firstly," Hana quipped earning a playful glare from her roommate. "Anyway I gotta go."

She said her goodbyes and began to make her way out the door, before turning back to yell. "Oh and if you have Peter over make sure to use protection!"

"I'm on the pill genius!" Sasha yelled back.

"Yeah but it's Peter!"

"Just go to work!"

Hana smiled before opening the front door, "I'll see you later."

She quickly ran to catch the bus that would take her into work, the commute was thankfully a lot easier than it had been the past week and no creep was sat in the back seat staring at her like yesterday. Although Hana had been working at the BAU for the last week this was her first real case, as she'd spent most of her time with Tara as they both received run down training to work in the BAU.

To say she was a little nervous was a major understatement. While she knew she had the capacity to be a great asset to the team, she knew she had to prove it. So as she sat on the bus, she put on her headphones and played music as she focused on her breathing trying to bring her stress down.

Eventually she arrived at work and quickly made her way into the elevator where she was met with the site of the BAU resident genius; Doctor Spencer Reid. They'd spoken a little over the last week but this was their first time alone.

As she glanced over she noticed the book he had clutched in his arms was in Russian, her eyes lit up in excitement.

"You can read Russian?" She questioned.

Reid turned his head towards, not expecting that question. "Yes, well I felt like rereading Anna Karenina again but I much prefer the original Russian text. I think it really helps with a lot of the nuances, that a translation can sometimes miss." He explained rapidly to the point that Hana almost couldn't keep up, "Do you speak it too?"

Hana nodded slightly before adding, "My adoptive father spoke Russian."

"Oh yes you would've spoken it growing up." He turned his body towards now,"sorry, I forgot."

"Thought you had an eidetic memory Doctor Reid?" She teased him slightly, also turning her body to face him.

"Ah well..." he stumbled over his words. "I was more focused on who your father was."

"Yeah, I suppose the whole mass murder thing tends to trumps everything else, huh?" She titled her head slightly.

Reid seemed shocked at her blunt reply, and responded with a simple shy smile. The two stood together for a few moments of silence before the elevator bell dinged and the doors opened to their floor.

"Позвоните мне, если когда-нибудь захотите практиковать свои навыки русского языка." Hana stated in Russian while winking at him before moving out of the elevator and pushing open the glass doors.

She placed her bag down by her desk before making her way to the conference room for the case briefing; there she found Morgan and Rossi sat the desk waiting for the rest of the team to arrive.

"Morning Gentlemen," She greeted before taking the seat next to Morgan, "What's the case?"

"Don't know yet babushka, still waiting on Hotch but apparently we're not doing the original case anymore." Morgan replied with smile. After she'd join the team and told them about her past, Morgan had begun to call her Babushka. She'd already explained what it meant to which he'd simply replied, "I know, but it's also the only Russian word I know."

"Really?" She questioned, "Wonder what the case is then?"

In that moment, Tara and Reid made their way into the room, seemingly continuing their conversation. "A bizarre coincidence, right?" Tara had quipped to Spencer as she placed her cup of coffee down on the round table.

"What's a coincidence?" Rossi asked the conversation clearly peaking his interest.

"Tara's mom went to the same elementary school as the Truck Stop strangler's mom."' Reid explained as he placed his cup of coffee down, before placing a second cup in front of Hana.

"Ok, that's a little creepy somehow."

"Cool though." Hana added while shrugging her shoulders.

"Don't get comfortable. The plane's waiting for us." Hotch stated as he made his way into the conference room with Garcia following closely behind him.

"10 minutes ago there was a poison gas attack on a city link commuter bus in Los Angeles." Garcia began to explain, and Hana eyes widened in surprise, "10 confirmed dead so far."

"Do we know what it was?" Tara questioned.

"Hazmat just got on the scene."

"Chlorine gas was used recently in Syria." Morgan suggested as everyone gathered their things and began to make their way out the conference room.

"Maybe it's connected."

"It also reminds me of the attack on the Tokyo subway. Religious cult members carried plastic bags of sarin and punctured them with umbrella tips." Reid added as the followed behind Hotch.

"That was 1995. It could be a 20th year anniversary event." Rossi suggested further.

"We'll find out." Hotch sounded determined as he swung open the glass doors the team following closely behind.

They made their way out to the plane, which Hana had yet to actually see. It was an impressive aircraft, and the interior surprised her. It actually looked incredibly comfy for something that was government funded.

"Jesus! Does this Jet even come with an air hostess?" She exclaimed as she took a seat on the comfiest chair she'd ever sat on.

Morgan laughed before replying, "Not unless you count pretty boy here." He patted Reid on the shoulder before taking his seat. Reid, in return swatted him away before taking the seat opposite Hana.

He smiled at the newest agent before pulling out a completely different book from the one in the elevator, Hana was able to glance at the cover and noticed it was War and Peace, once more in the original Russian.

"Thought you were reading Anna Karenina?" She queried, causing the Doctor to lift his head to look at her.

"Oh, I finished that this morning, brought this one for the flight. Just some light reading."

"Big book for some 'light reading'" she replied curling her figures to indicate quotations. "You a fast reader or something."

"We'll I can read 5 words a minute so... I guess so." He replied, rather humbly.

"Holy shit"

"What?"

"You're fucking smart at fuck, Doctor Reid."

He laughed at her statement, his lips curled into a wide smile as he did so, Hana thought he was adorable.

"Okay let's discuss the case, get a rough profile going before we get there, I'm calling Garcia now." Hotch stated as he opened his laptop and the team gathered around the small screen. Eventually they were greeted by the sight of the lovable technical analyst.

"Oh, crime-fighters, I just got confirmation from the L.A. field office that traces of sarin were found." Garcia opened with when Hotch gave her the go ahead.

"Sarin is the most volatile nerve agent there is." Reid began to explain, “Symptoms are felt within seconds. Watery eyes, foaming at the nose and mouth, and convulsions, paralysis, and death within minutes."

Hana winced at the Doctor’s description, she’d been lucky to never come across Sarin in her past line of work.

"The last known use of sarin was two years ago in Syria, near Damascus." Tara suggested to the group.

"We've had recent threats of terrorism targeting major U.S. cities." Morgan also added building off what Tara had mentioned.

"The religious cult responsible for the Tokyo subway attack 20 years ago is also still active." Rossi proposed as an alternative profile.

"Very much so, but they've split into two branches with different names." Reid spoke rapidly, while still expressing his point clearly, “There's over 2,100 members and 4 of them are in Southern California."

"Where's the leader?" Morgan asked.

"Shoko Asahara's on death row in Japan. He's incoherent and confined to a wheelchair."

"So he's not calling any shots." Rossi quipped in response.

“That’s putting nicely.” Hana stated quietly earning a bemused look from Reid; the only one who heard her.

"No, but that doesn't rule out devout followers doing it in his name." Hotch had responded to Rossi, as the team continued the discussion.

"Garcia, what do you know about the casualties?"

"Aside from the I.D.s, not much."

"Well, it's 6 men and 4 women, age range 20 to 60."

"Victimology seems to be pretty random."

"Here's the thing-- sarin evaporates quickly, it's hard to control, and would thus be very difficult to target an individual."

"Collateral damage may mask the real target."

“They must have had a vantage view of bus to make sure the right victim was on board.” The youngest agent added, internally proud for contributing to the discussion.

It was almost intimidating how well they bounced ideas of each other to make a brief profile. Even Tara had managed to keep up with them and she was just as new and Hana.

"Garcia, look into the victims and also anyone online claiming responsibility."

"Aye aye, captain." Garcia responded before terminating the video call.

With the call ended the team took their seats and prepared for the case. Hana took her seat facing Spencer Reid once again, sighing softly to her self.

"How are you feeling?” The young doctor suddenly asked her, “I was nervous on my first case.”

“Yeah I feel one second away from screaming. I mean chemical attacks aren’t exactly my forte.” Hana replied followed by a set of giggles mostly brought on by her nerves. Yet, rather than look at her strangely, Spencer began to laugh with her. She felt comfortable enough to keep laughing.

Chocolate Brownies | GN!Y/N x Josh Washington

Chocolate Brownies | GN!Y/N X Josh Washington

Masterlist

After Y/N accidentally consumes some of Chris' *special* brownies, Josh is a sweetie and takes care of them through their first high. (WC: 3400)

Warnings: Weed usage, Accidently eating an edible, Alcohol, Horror movie, minor overstimulation A/N: I'm not super familiar with weed, apologies if it's not realistic.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Damn, I didn’t know Chris could bake.” Y/N spoke as they licked their fingers, finishing their second chocolate brownie. Sam half-listened as she was busy looking for a bottle opener in the lodge’s huge kitchen. “You should probably take a brownie before I eat them all.”

Sam froze as she realised what Y/N was talking about: “Are you eating the brownies Chris made?”

“Uh huh.” Y/N replied nonchalantly, reaching for another one, and stopped when Sam slapped their hand away. “Hey! What’s your problem?”

"Sweetie, those are Chris’ *special* brownies.”

Pause.

“You mean that these have-“ “Weed in them yes.” Sam interrupted them, reaching a hand out to feel her friend’s temperature. “You feel okay, sweetie?”

“Yeah… I think so... Is two brownies a lot?”

“For someone like you, probably.” Sam was right. Y/N hadn’t taken edibles before; they’d smoked it once, but that was a year ago, and they’d coughed it up immediately before stopping. “But it shouldn’t hit for another thirty minutes or so.”

"Okay,” they trailed off, “could I stay with you while you get sorted?”

“Of course.” Sam replied sweetly; she was like the big sister Y/N never had. They sat and watched as Sam finally found a bottle opener, laughing as their friend victoriously opened her bottle of beer. The two chilled in the kitchen for a while, until Y/N's head became fuzzy, but they didn’t mind; in fact, it felt nice.

Sam turned as her friend began quietly humming to themselves, “Has it hit it, you?” Her friend could only tilt their head and smile smugly, “I understand why you guys like this now.”

"Aww, sweetie, let me get you some water.” She stroked her friend's cheek before turning away to grab a bottle of water from the fridge.

“I think Josh would like these...” they spoke absentmindedly, swinging their legs as they sat on the kitchen counter. Y/N found it weird how their voice sounded; it had gotten slightly deeper as much as they tried, but it remained at a slow pace. “Where’s Josh?”

“He’s where we left him, Y/N, remember?” Her voice muffled as she reached into the fridge. “Do you want me to get him for you?”

"Oh, I don’t want to bother him.” Y/N felt a blush creep onto their cheeks. They’d always had a crush on Josh ever since Sam had introduced them to each other; that was only four years ago.

The blonde simply shakes her head before leaving the kitchen for a moment before returning, Josh following behind her. “What’s up?”

Sam simply pointed at Y/N, who was busy staring into space. He approached them, standing in front of their eye line, “Y/N? You okay?”

“Joshuaaa” Y/N smiled brightly as he came into their view. “You should try Chris’ brownies; they’re really good.”

His brows furrowed for a second in thought, reaching out to their chin and lifted their face to him. He assessed them for a moment before a smirk spread across his face. “Are you high?”

“Yep,” they answered, “Although I didn’t mean to be.”

He looked between them and the brownie tray before asking, “How many did you eat?”

Instead of speaking, Y/N shyly held up two fingers as an indication, “Jesus, you’ve barely touched the stuff, and you decided to eat two weed brownies?”

“I didn’t know they had weed in them.” They shrugged, ignoring Sam as she tried to hand them the bottle of water she’d gotten for them moments before.

“You didn’t know?” A laugh escaped him, and he crossed his arms. “How do you not know they’re weed brownies? What, you thought Chris was just that good of a baker?”

Sam tired to pass Y/N the water again but was waved away as they continued to defend themselves to Josh. “I thought it was one of his grandma’s recipes, like that cake he made for my birthday.”

“I doubt his grandma was the one that taught him how to make these.” He shook his head fondly before taking the drink from Sam’s hand and shoving it towards them. “Here, drink. It’ll help with that dry mouth.”

“Not thirsty.” They stated while pushing his hand away.

“Don’t care, drink the goddam water; you’ll thank me later.” His voice was stern, and he shoved the water back towards them. For as long as Y/N and Josh knew each other, everyone knew how protective he was over his younger friend.

Y/N knew they couldn’t argue with him, so they chugged the water and then quickly hopped off the counter, causing them to stumble a little bit.

Josh’s hands shot out and wrapped around their waist to keep them steady. “Woah, take it easy. You’re gonna fall on your ass, Y/N.”

"Well, you caught me,” they replied before tapping his nose. “So I’m perfectly fine.”

He smirked and kept a hold on them still. It was almost second nature to just keep their body close to his. “Just keep your feet on the ground next time, yeah?”

“‘Kay.” They replied simply, “Where’s Chris?”

“I’m sure he’s around; want us to go look for him?” He pulled away from them, taking a step back so they could move.

"I wanna thank him for his magic brownies."

“You really wanna thank him, or are you just wanting more brownies?” He asked with a raised eyebrow and crossed his arms. Y/N just shrugged in reply, earning a fond chuckle from Josh, “C’mon then, let’s go find Chris so you can thank him for the brownies.”

He carefully guided from the kitchen, walking to the living room, where Chris was sitting awkwardly making conversation with Ashley and Jess. Once Y/N eyes focused on Chris, they suddenly shot from Josh’s side. Nearly pouncing on him as they hug him from behind.

"BONJOUR MY MAGIC BROWNIE MAN!" They yelled in his ear as they kissed him on both cheeks.

Chris was clearly shocked, his eyes widening as he jumped from the couch and turned to face them. “Y/N, Jesus, you scared me.”

Without Chris sitting down, Y/N was now sprawled over the back of the couch, looking rather uncomfortable. He opted to ignore Josh’s mumble of “pussy” and turned to face his friend, “The fuck is wrong with you.”

"I'm high," Y/N replied simply, as if it explained everything.

“High? How can you be high? You don’t even smoke—oh, OH!” Chris’ eyes became wide with realisation, and he quickly lifted Y/N’s head up to look into their eyes. “How many did you take?”

"Only two," Y/N answered truthfully, their voice still slow and a hint deeper than it usually was. "Why? Is that a lot?"

Josh chuckled again at their confusion, while Chris looked even more shocked if that was possible. "Two? You're a lightweight; you're gonna be on your ass for three hours minimum!"

"Well, I didn’t mean to!” Y/N yelled back, “I didn’t even know they had weed in them.”

"That's your own fault, moron," Chris responded bluntly, but there was a hint of amusement in his voice. Then he turned to Josh, with eyebrows slightly furrowed in suspicion as he asked, "And where were you when our dear friend was getting high off their ass?”

Josh laughed quietly. "Relax, Coachie, I had nothing to do with this."

Y/N spoke up determinedly, "Hey, don’t be mean; Josh said he'd look after me.”

Chris rolled his eyes and let Y/N go, letting their head fall back down. "Of course he did. He's practically your knight in shining armour," he remarked sarcastically.

He turned back to a still-clueless Y/N. "Seriously though, how did you not realise they were weed brownies? They smell stronger than the skunk's den near my place."

By this point, Y/N was slowly sliding off the back of the couch and onto the floor. To the point their face was now in the sofa’s pillows, which muffled their voice as they responded.

"Alright, come on, let's get you somewhere more comfortable," Josh suggested as he walked over to Y/N, pulling them upright with ease as if they were a ragdoll. However, in this case, the ragdoll in question had a tendency to giggle at nearly everything and was finding the whole situation rather amusing.

“Chris is right, you’re my own personal hero.” Y/N said in between giggles, leaning their back into his, allowing him to drag them around the couch.

Josh simply hummed to himself, then he dragged them around the couch and made his way towards the stairs. "C'mon, you lightweight, let's get you to your room, yeah?"

Instead, Y/N fought against him by suddenly going limp in his arms. "Nooo, I'm not tired yet.”

“Shit!” Josh exclaimed as he struggled to hold Y/N up at the sudden added weight. “Jesus, stop doing that!”

“Can we watch a movie instead?”

Josh tried his best to hold the limp figure up. "Alright, alright, fine." He agreed, "We'll watch a movie."

As he spoke, he effortlessly scooped them up, with one arm under their legs and the other behind their back. He had never had a problem carrying them before, and it was the quickest way to ensure they didn’t fall.

He carried them to the couch and gently placed them down so they were sitting before heading to the DVD player and opening the cupboard with all the movies inside. “So what do you wanna watch?”

“Wait, I’m gonna text everyone and ask them to come." Y/N explained as they pulled out their phone and sent a quick text in the group chat, “We should decide together.”

Josh just raised an eyebrow at that but said nothing as he watched them quickly type out a message. Eventually the other’s made their way into the living room from wherever they were before.

“So Y/N,” Mike began with an amused smile as he read of his phone, “Mind telling us what ‘has gus come to live rom’ means?”

Emily stifled a giggle while Sam covered her mouth to hide a smirk. Mike was clearly the only one brave enough to ask the question.

Y/N furrowed their eyebrows in confusion. “I didn’t write that.” They said as they looked at their phone once more, “I wrote, Hey guys, come to the living room.”

“Are you fucking high or something?” Emily asked harshly, although she meant it affectionately, “You basically wrote in gibberish.”

"Yeah, I am..." Y/N answered honestly, a dopey smile on their face. "And Chris's brownies were really good."

Chris's face went bright red as everyone turned to stare at him. "You gave them weed brownies?!" Ashley gasped, slightly horrified. "How many did they eat?"

"Two," Chris admitted sheepishly, "I didn't think they'd actually eat them!"

"You ate what?" Matt asked, clearly shocked but more concerned about how Y/N would feel. He knew that a few of his friends smoked, but Y/N never did, meaning they had a low tolerance for that sort of thing. "Are they okay?"

Josh rolled his eyes and went to sit in the chair next to Y/N. "They're fine, Matt. Don't stress."

Y/N nodded fondly before grabbing Josh’s arm. “Josh’s taking care of me tonight!”

"Of course he is," Mike said with an amused smirk. "Josh always takes care of Y/N."

"I'm just looking out for my younger friend," Josh said with a shrug. "Anyway, what movie are we watching?"

"What if we watch a horror movie?" Matt suggested with a mischievous grin. "It'll be fun to see how Y/N reacts when they're high."

"No way, Matt," Josh said firmly. "We're not giving Y/N a panic attack."

At the same time as Josh’s words, Y/N also spoke up, “Great idea, Matt, we could watch The Conjuring!”

Josh frowned at Y/N. "You don't like scary movies," he reminded them. "I'm not letting you watch The Conjuring."

"I don't see why we can't watch it," Emily spoke up. "It'll be funny."

"It's not funny, Emily," Josh said, his tone bordering on annoyed. "Y/N doesn't like to be scared, and we don't want to take advantage of them when they're not in their right mind."

“Jesus Josh, no need to be so dramatic,” Jess spoke up from next to Emily with a smirk. “Y/N is a grown up; they can handle themselves.”

"That's not the point, Jess," Josh replied, his frustration evident in his voice. "They're not in their right mind, and I'm not letting you take advantage of that."

"Oh, come on, dude, lighten up,” Mike said as he patted Josh on the back. “We’re supposed to be letting go this weekend, remember?”

“Seriously Mike.” Josh muttered in reply as his eyes narrowed, ready to lay into his friend.

"Okay, okay, enough," Ashley interjected before the situation could escalate further. "How about we watch something light-hearted instead? Comedy maybe?"

Josh let out a sigh of relief, glad that the conversation had shifted to a more reasonable suggestion. "Yeah, that sounds better," he said, looking around at the group for their approval. "Y'all good with that?”

Unbeknownst to them, while they were all arguing over what movie to watch, Y/N had slipped from Josh’s grip and had approached the DVD cupboard. After finding the movie they wanted to watch, Y/N had simply placed it in the DVD player and pressed play. It wasn’t until the opening scene of a man loudly screaming in pain loudly echoed through the room did the others notice what had just happened.

"What the- Y/N! I told you we weren't watching a horror movie!" Josh exclaimed, his irritation clear.

Instead of answering, their eyes were fixated on the screen. They were completely silent for a while, until they finally spoke up when the movie versions of the Warrens appeared on screen. “Fuck. They’re so hot.”

Josh groaned in frustration, "Y/N. You’re way too high for this.”

"Come on, Josh," Sam said teasingly. "You can't blame Y/N for having a thing for Vera Farmiga."

“Shut up, Sam.”

“Oh Josh, that hurt’s my feelings.” Sam replied in mock hurt.

Meanwhile, Y/N had finally moved away from the TV and back towards the couch. Except instead of sitting back in the spot they were in, Y/N decided a better option would be to sit right in the centre of Josh’s lap.

"What are you doing?" Josh asked, slightly taken aback by Y/N's sudden intimacy. However, he didn't push them away, merely adjusting his position to accommodate them. He put his hands on their waist, holding them steady as they nestled into his lap.

“You’re comfy,” Was all Y/N said as the other’s simply smirked at each other before, taking their own seat to watch the movie; Sam now sitting in the spot Y/N used to be in.

As the movie continued, Y/N couldn’t help but feel a little shiver up their back and turned towards Chris, “Could you pass a blanket, please, Chris?”

“Sure,” he tossed them a large black fluffy throw, which Y/N happily placed on themselves and, as a result, Josh as well.

Josh was glad Y/N was comfortable, and he couldn't help but chuckle at the situation. "You're lucky I like you," he muttered under his breath as he tightened his arms around Y/N.

“Mhmm, I like you too.” They said as they shuffled further into his chest and rested their head on Josh’s shoulder. “Maybe I like you a bit more.”

“Shut up and watch the movie.” He responded fondly as he wrapped his arm around Y/N and pulled them closer.

The group continued to watch the movie in mostly silence, except for the occasional screams at the several jump scares. At some point throughout the movie, Y/N had adjusted in Josh’s lap and was sitting sideways with their head resting against his neck.

During the climax of the film, Y/N felt a bit dizzy and nauseous, so with a groan, they hid their face in Josh's neck. Yet despite not being able to see the film, the sound effects and voices were making them feel very overstimulated.

Noticing their distress, Josh reached his hand up and began to stroke her hair softly as he whispered over the movie, "Hey, you doing okay?”

Y/N couldn’t speak suddenly; their mind felt like mush; all they could do was mumble and shake their head against his neck.

Josh's concern deepens as he feels Y/N shake their head against his neck. He turns his head a bit to get a better look at their face, but all he can see is the disoriented look in their eyes.

"Hey," he says gently, "can you look at me for a second?"

Y/N tried to lift their head up but was struggling; they felt like it weighed nearly a tonne and couldn’t move. Their breathing grew heavy with panic, and tears weld in their eyes.

Josh noticed the tears welling up in Y/N's eyes and the panic setting in. "Hey, hey, it's okay," he said in a soothing tone. "Just take some deep breaths, okay? I'm right here with you."

Swallowing harshly, Y/N found their voice long enough to whisper into his neck, “I don’t wanna be here.” Before letting out a small sob.

"Shh, it's okay," he reassured, gently stroking their hair and using his own body to try and shield Y/N from the outside world. "We can leave, okay? We can go to your room if you want."

“Please…” Their voice was small now but still loud enough for Josh to hear.

Josh quickly gathered Y/N in his arms and stood; the others looked away from the movie at his movements. Watching as he began to carry them away from the room.

“Is Y/N okay, Josh?” Sam asked with a furrowed brow as motherly concern spread across her face.

He paused and turned back to the group. “They’re not feeling too good, so I think I should just take them to bed.”

"Alright, man," Mike spoke up. "Be sure to take care of them, yeah? And let us know if you need any help."

Josh nodded in agreement. "Don't worry, I've got it," he replied, his grip on Y/N tightening slightly.

With that, Josh turned back around and made his way up the stairs and into Y/N’s room. After a little struggle, he was able to push the door open and gently lay them down on the bed. He tucked them gently before moving around the room to make sure they had everything they needed: a glass of water, some painkillers, and a bucket, just in case.

He gently stroked their cheek before quietly moving to the door. “Wait!” A voice called back to Josh, caring for him to turn around, "Stay, please.”

"You sure you want me to stay?" he asked quietly.

“At least until I fall asleep.”

Josh nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Of course," he replied softly. "I'll stay."

He sat down above the covers next to Y/N and took their hand in his. “How are you feeling?”

“Better,” Y/N answered, “sorry for freaking you out.”

"No need to apologise," he replied, shaking his head softly. "You were in quite a state. I'm just glad you're feeling better now."

He continued to stroke Y/N's hair, his fingers weaving through the soft strands. "You'll be okay, I promise," he said reassuringly. "Just get some rest, okay?

“Mmhmm,” Was all Y/N said in reply; their eyes were closed and their breathing was growing softer as they drifted to sleep. “Thanks for looking after me.”

"No need to thank me," he said quietly. "I'm just happy to be here. Now, go to sleep, alright?"

He stayed sat beside them for a few more moments, watching as they entered a full state of sleep. Once he was sure they were deep asleep, he carefully brushed a stray lock of hair from their face and sighed softly.

In their deep sleep, Y/N breathy felt a soft touch on their forehead. Sighing contently, they fell deeper in sleep, not realising that Josh had placed a kiss on their head.

“Sleep tight, Y/N.” He whispered into the quiet, “I’ll be here to take care of you, always.”

Chapter 6. Vegas

Spencer and Hana should probably talk about the other night, if only their wan't so important and distracting. Or maybe they're just coming up with excuses. Chapter Title: Vegas by Doja Cat

Spencer and Hana hadn’t spoken about the drunken kiss they’d shared only a few weeks ago. It had only been a three days after that night they’d been sent out on another case in , but once they’d gotten back to DC neither knew how broach the subject. Even now as they sat next to each other on the jet heading to Las Vegas, New Mexico, they both struggled to start a conversation about that night; so they didn’t.

“I wish it was the fun Las Vegas.” Hana complained as she ate the salad Sasha had made her that morning.

“Did you know I’m from Vegas?”

“Really?” She turned to him, perking up in interest, “Does this mean I should bring you with the next time I head to the casinos?”

“I would sat yes but I’m actually banned from majority of the casinos in Vegas.” He informed her nonchalantly.

“Holy shit!” She exclaimed in surprise, “I was wrong you got a little bad side to you, Doctor.”

He laughed at her, which encouraged Hana to laugh as well. Out of habit she hit him slightly on the arm as she continued to laugh, before catching her breath. The pair were soon joined by the rest of the team in order to get a general profile before they land.

“Is there even anything interesting about this Las Vegas?” Hana questioned to start the discussion, which Spencer was happy to contribute.

“In the late 19th century, it was a booming railroad hub with a reputation for lawlessness, and apparently, outlaws are a part of the town's genetics. Billy the Kid lived there, and Doc Holliday himself had a saloon there before going to meet Wyatt Earp in Tombstone.”

“The more things change, the more things stay the same.” Rossi chimed in, looking through the case file.

“All the victims in both instances were teenagers, except for Jose Rivera.”

“A younger staff, that's pretty typical for a night shift.” Morgan chimed in, to add extra information.

“The unsubs might have considered that. It would be easier to subdue a group of kids.”

Tara leaned forward slightly so she could contribute, “Almost an identical M.O. Copycat or no, why go back to this town and do this again?

“They could be sending some kind of message to announce their return.” Spencer suggested, followed by Rossi’s other idea.

“Or it just might be criminal ego. They got away with it the first time. Why not do it again?”

“Could also be about reliving it, if it is the same unsubs they might be wanting to relive the ‘glory days’.” Hana noted although she didn’t consider killing teenagers and arson as something someone should see as their ‘glory days’

“With unsubs this violent, how do you just disappear and go dormant for 6 years?” Morgan questioned, continuing to build the profile.

Hotch turned towards Morgan before speaking, “They may have been in prison. That would explain the criminal experience.”

“Crime U., best education taxpayer money can buy.” Rossi uttered making Hana smirk slightly, yet she hid it behind her hand at the glance she received from Hotch.

“When we land, I'll have Garcia compile a list of recently released convicts in the area. Morgan, you and Reid go with Federov to the coroner when we land. Lewis, you're with Dave and me at the local PD.”

With that the team waited until they landed until they wait their separate ways. Hana followed Spencer and Morgan to one of the 3 cars waiting for them before heading off to the coroner. The arrived only a few minutes later, exiting the vehicle the trio made the way towards the building. The wind was slightly strong and kept blowing Hana’s hair into her face. She gather her hair and went to tie it into a pony tail only to realise that she didn’t have a hair tie on either wrist. Sighing heavily, she released her hair, allowing to flow in the wind.

As they continued walking, Hana felt a tap on her shoulder and turned to face Spencer to her right. He handed her something before continuing towards the building. She looked down to see that he had handed her a small black hair tie. Smiling slightly, she pulled her hair backup and tied into a messy ponytail.

“Thanks!” She called over to Spencer, who turned and smiled in reply.

Once they entered the building the met with the coroner who led them through to the morgue where the three victims laid on separate metal autopsy table. Hana felt a strange feeling as looked at the victims, this was the first time she’d seen someone younger than her. They had so much life left in them, so much potential. She wanted to catch these assholes. Or maybe just kill them.

Spencer leaned in to assess the victims, “Several antemortem wounds, facial lacerations, fractured jaw, a fractured skull.”

“Yeah, it was a brutal beating. All 3 of them had broken ribs, too.” The coroner responded as he read from his autopsy report.

“And ligature marks.” The doctor noted as he continued look over the bodies.

The coroner nodded before continuing, “Looks like the boys were bound with their own belts and electrical wires. I found leather and melted plastic in their clothes.”  He spoke as he lead them towards the female victim, “Renee Acosta was different. There's evidence of sexual assault.”

“Any recoverable DNA?”, Morgan asked.

“None. Whatever wasn't destroyed by the fire got washed away by the sprinklers. But she was recovered without clothes on. And based on the cotton and nylon fibres I found around her wrists, I think they restrained her with her own underwear.”

Spencer looked up from the female victim, “That's precisely what happened to the female victim 6 years ago.”

“Those details weren't released to the press. These aren't copycats. These are the same guys.” Morgan noted in reply.

Hana looked between the two other agents before speaking, “The question still stands, I mean why come back now?”

As it turns out only one of the unsubs was the original perpetrators from 6 years ago. Duke Mason had returned due his old flame, who most likely gave birth to his son before he was imprisoned all those years ago. Garcia, the wonder that she is, was able to find Tammy Vasquez’ address, and now Hana was sat next to Morgan as the team drove their way over there.

When they arrived Chief Montoya reached the house first and made his way to the door to knock, everyone else gathered behind him.

“Ms. Vasquez! Police! Hello? Anybody home?” He called multiple times with seemingly no answer, “Nobody here.”

They turned to leave before Morgan heard a muffled cry in the distance, causing him to pause, “Wait a minute. You hear that?”, He moved towards the door before knocking, “FBI! Anybody here?”

Hana moved closer to the door and heard more sobbing coming from the house, she nodded at Morgan to show she heard it too. “There's somebody in there.”

The officers went around the back as Morgan kicked open the door. Moving through the house, Hana made her way through following closely behind Morgan. Turning a corner the pair found an older woman tied up with duct tape across her mouth.

“Guys.” Morgan called as he made his way to the woman tied up, “It's ok. It's ok, I got you. I got you. Are you hurt?”

“No. I'm fine. He took them. He took them both.”

“We need to issue an Amber alert.” Rossi stated a turned around back outside the house. Hana stayed for moment longer making sure the other woman was okay, before following her team outside.

She walked towards Morgan and Rossi who were speaking to each other. While she didn’t catch the beginning of the conversation she heard Rossi’s question to Morgan. “What happened to Turner?”

“I bet it got pretty ugly when they split up.” Morgan suggested, car pulled up the scene and Spencer step out running slightly towards them.

“Hotch is out coordinating roadblocks and canvassing the area, but so far nothing.” Spencer spoke, giving them an update.

“Why switch directions are risk coming all the way back here?”

Rossi shrugged slightly before answering, “He's strung out and believes that boy Cole is his son. He's capable of anything.”

“We should extend the Amber alert.” Spencer suggested to which the team all nodded in a agreement.

Chief Montoya shouted as he made his way over to the team, “Agents! Tammy Vasquez' pickup truck was spotted heading south on Route 34.”

“Is that far from here?”

“About 10 miles or so. State police have major roadways on the other end blocked off so he can't get out, but it cuts through the Santa Fe National Forest. If he knows what he's doing, he can hole up out there for weeks.”

“Where would he go to access fresh water?”

“There's an old abandoned campground. It doesn't get used much. Sometimes the kids go up there to drink.”

“He'd want to go someplace familiar.” Rossi observed

“That’s probably where he took them.” Hana stated as Spencer turned to her, a strange expression on his face.

“Agents, if you don't mind me making a suggestion,” Montoya spoke as he lifted a map for everyone to see, “I know that place like the back of my hand.”

Hana stood next to Rossi as her and the team listened as he pointed to the map at a certain point where they could move if they wanted to catch Mason by surprise. After the plan was set up, they separated into small groups and headed towards the campsite.

When they arrived Hana noticed the car park up, and two figures that appeared to be arguing, she turned to Rossi who nodded to indicate it was time to intervene. Signalling to the other groups who moved in to the figures.

Noticing the guns each of them was holding, Morgan stood out slightly to announce their presence, “FBI, drop the weapon!”

In response, Hana heard the one with the long hair shout something before the pair began to fire at the police and agents in the trees. In the firefight they were able to take the long haired with one sniper shot, but Mason stayed up longer.

Hana step out for one moment in attempt to get mother shot in, when she felt red hot pain exploded in her right side. She moved back behind the tree and put her hand against the pain source; only to find her hand coated in blood. The asshole had managed to get a shot clean through her shoulder.

“Shit!” She cursed as she put her back on the wound, “You motherfucker!”

“Language!” She heard the Rossi shout over from his position.

“With all due respect sir,” she replied, “I’ve been fucking shot!”

While she was shouting back she noticed the firefight had finally ended and saw Mason lying on the ground. The lack of bullets firing allowed Rossi to make his over to where she was now sitting against the tree.

“Don’t worry it was clean shot, I’ll just need stitches.” She reassured as her unit chief looked at her shoulder in concern.

“Someone should still take a look at it before we leave.” He ordered as he grabbed her uninjured left arm to help her up.

She smiled wryly at him, the pain still making her dizzy. “Careful, Sir someone might think you like me.”

Rossi laughed slightly before replying, “Oh we wouldn’t want that.”

After Hana was patched, she joined her team at the funeral of the victims, dressed in black sat between Spencer and Tara on a wooden church pew. That strange feeling that she felt when she saw the bodies had came back, causing her to clench the skirt of the simple black dress she was wearing. As she listened to the singer, and watching the parents say their last goodbyes; she realised it was sorrow. She’d felt sorrow before, but this was the first time she had mourned not only for these young victims but also for the lives they could’ve lived.

So, around some of the few people that she trusted, she allowed one tear to fall. Noticing the need for comfort she felt Tara reach out and grasp Hana's hand gently, to which she squeezed it in thanks. At least this time she felt sorrow; she wasn’t alone.

Chapter 1. A Normal Day

Back to Masterlist.

Rosie's usually likes her mornings, but not this one. TW// Gun description

This morning was getting close to the worst morning Rosie Macedo has ever had.

Firstly, she had woken up to an almost flooded kitchen, from her roommate leaving the tap on when they'd left an hour ago. This meant she spent an extra ten minutes mopping the floor, not great.

Secondly, her car a parking ticket because she forgot to put her parking pass on her windscreen last night, worse. Then finally, her favourite cafe somehow ran out of coffee so they'd not opened today, the worst thing so far.

So here she found herself walking into Wayne Enterprise tired, annoyed and regretting not just calling in sick.

"Morning! You doing okay Rosie?" One of the security guards, Fred asked as she scanned her ID badge to enter.

"Oh could be better Fred, but hope you're doing better, I heard you got the flu last week." Rosie replied as she stopped to talk.

"Yeah it was rough but back to normal now thankfully."

"I'm glad." She smiled, "Anyway I gotta go but have a good day!"

Fred waved at her as she scurried to the elevator, thankfully it wasn't too full today so it was relatively peaceful ride to the top floor. As she exited the elevator she spotted a familiar, smiling face.

"Miss Rosie!" Dick, greeted her holding two cups in his hand while holding one towards her, "I brought you some coffee, how are you today?"

"Dick you are my life saver," she sighed with relief as she took a sip of the fresh coffee now in her hand. "I've been better that's for sure, how's everything today?"

"Well that's why I've stopped you," Rosie furrowed her browns in confusion, "He's got a new girlfriend."

"Already? What happened to Natalia?" Her eyes widened in surprise.

"Apparently she 'had to return to Milan' but turns out she already had another boyfriend there." Dick filled her in as they began walking to her desk.

"Wow!" She scoffed as she put her bag down to pull out her things. "Okay so give me the play by play please."

"Well she's an English heiress but from what I can tell she's the high society spoiled type, oh and she is definitely the type to complain when something doesn't got her way," Rosie groaned as Dick continued, "So I'm sure you guys are gonna get along swimmingly."

"Listen I get your Dad is like the playboy of the century but does he actually think things through before dating these women." She complained, "I mean no offence to these ladies whatsoever but he always picks the ones he is least compatible with."

It was as she finished that sentence, that the man himself opened to door to his office and approached her desk. He was dressed sharp as always in a black jumper and suit trousers combo, which he often wore when he had no high client meetings.

"And what are my favourite employees chatting about today?" He inquired leaving his side against the desk.

"Your new girlfriend." Rosie replied as bluntly as she always did with Bruce. "Your son's been filling me in."

"Has he know?" He turned to face Dick.

"Well she is your assistant thought I'd help you out by giving important updates."

"Which includes my dating life?" He questioned keeping eye contact with his son.

"Ah...well would you look at the time, I'm actually late for a super important meeting with... someone." Dick stumbled as he slowly back towards the elevator before turning into a full sprint.

"Bye Rosie!" He yelled as the doors to the elevator closed. Leaving the two staring at each other in amusement.

"What's her name then?" She questioned leaning against her side for the desk.

"Penelope Hinebridge"

"Hinebridge, like Wayne Tech's newest partnership Hinebridge?" Rosie leaned further forward to question as Bruce sighed before nodding. "I think this is the worst one you've pick yet, what happens if you breakup?"

"Hey, I'm Bruce Wayne you know, infamous playboy." He gestured to himself as he spoke.

"You and I both know that every person you've dated thinks they'll be the one to change that."

"I'm offended Macedo, I thought you believed people can change." He teased as he leaned closer towards her.

She just laughed as stared directly into his eyes before speaking, "I'm just keeping you humble, Wayne."

He chuckled quietly again while looking directly into her eyes, after sometime his eyes soften from his usual Bruce Wayne persona into a look of genuine admiration towards Rosie. Her eyes were so dark today that he could almost see his own reflection. As Bruce reached his hand to gently wipe under her eyes where Rosie's mascara had slightly stained, the door to the elevator suddenly opened causing the two quickly separate.

They turned towards whoever the new guest was, finding the smirking face Lucius Fox looking directly at the pair as he held a small stack of papers in his hand.

"Good morning, I can see you both seem in a good mood?" Mr Fox spoke as he approached the two.

Bruce cleared his throat before replying, "You know me Lucius, I always have a good day.", then he winked.

Rosie on the other hand, didn’t flinch at Mr Fox’s words, she’d already endured his teasing a hundred times over. “Good Morning Mr Fox.”

“Now now, I specifically remember telling you to simply call me Lucius.”

“You know me Lucius,” She replied smiling, “I’ve always had a memory problem.”

As Rosie spoke she tapped the side of her head twice to make her point, earning a quiet chuckle from Mr Wayne and raised eyebrow from Lucius. She laughed softly at their reactions, shaking her head slightly she stood to gather her things and held them in her arms close to her chest.

“Well gentlemen, this has been lovely,” Spoke as she walked around her desk, “but I have a meeting with the R&D department I supposed to go to on your behalf.”

She looked pointedly at Mr Wayne as she spoke the last part, causing him to narrow his eyes at her for a moment before forcing a sheepish smile, “My apologies Miss Macedo, but I was already booked out for the day as you can see.”

“I can see that Mr Wayne,” She replied as she stepped into the elevator, “Which is why I won’t be bothering today. At All”

With those last words the doors closed and the elevator moved down to the 78th floor, leaving Bruce and Lucius looking at each other in bemusement. The silence didn’t last long, broken by Lucius.

“Well she’s quite a catch,” he began, “although if rumours prove correct I hear you’re taken?”

Bruce pointed at him forcefully before speaking, eyes narrowing, “Don’t you start too.”

Lucius simply raise his eyebrow in reply, his usual go to.

“Besides, we have bigger things to worry about.” Bruce began to lead the man to his office. “Did you see the schematics I sent you.”

“Yes, I must say Damien certainly has a way with weapon design, although I do have some concerns about the lethality factor.”

With that the door closed, conversation away from prying eyes.

Down on the 78th floor, Rosie was struggling to maintain a constructive meeting with the R&D department.

“I just don’t get it Rosie,” The R&D manager spoke, “You’re with him all the time, I mean you’ve even been at his house and yet you’re quote on quote ‘not dating’”

After the manager said those words, Rosie was overwhelmed with the R&D department all speaking at the same time. She only caught parts of what each person was saying, but became very alarmed when she heard the words “Bone” and “Sexy” among the chaos.

“Okay!” Rosie hit her hand against the table to get their attention, “I don’t know how many times I have to reaffirm this, but me and Bruce Wayne are not and will not be dating, ever.”

There was a pause as the room froze to look at her, when the manager spoke up again, “See you two would be perfect for each other!” Then noise stared again with the department debating with each other about Rosie’s ‘romance’ with Mr Wayne, in front of her.

All Rosie could do was sigh and make her way out of the conference, to have a break from the meeting that was supposed to be about current market trends. Rubbing her forehead, she moved to the water fountain to pour herself a drink. As she sipped on the cold water the elevator dinged as it stopped on the 78th floor.

When it opened, Rosie was shocked at the container of the water fountain suddenly exploded with a load bang, soaking her from head to toe. A clicked forced her turn around, only to come face to face with the barrel of a familiar umbrella shaped gun.

“Sorry miss,” The man with the long, pointed nose spoke in a gravely voice, “But this floor now belongs to the Cobblepot Foundation.”

Rosie dropped her cup in shocked before raising her hands, she let Cobblepot’s goons lead her back into the conference room where other henchmen were already tying up the R&D department. As they shoved her down next to them before tying her wrists together, Rosie only had one thought.

This was definitely in the top ten of worst mornings ever.
