you would almost think that israel has stopped killing palestinians but in the past twenty-four hours i have seen some of the most gruesome images of dead and beheaded human beings in my life, once again, in july of 2024.

israel is banking on nine months of genocide pacifying global outrage, the slow and steady extermination becoming more palatable. however, nine months in this also incriminates them absolutely.

to be committing such heinous crimes nine months in, with a genocide trial, ICC warrants pending, the eyes of the world on them shows that israel is not a state with any system of accountability, nor are its citizens or its supporters capable of mounting a real opposition to its genocidal mandate of palestinians. nine months of unstoppable and unceasing war crimes, and nine months of israel apologists refusing to give an inch as they continue to take lives. nine months of proving that they were never trying to end hamas, nor were they ever capable of it, but they seek nothing except the annihilation of palestinians and the annexation of their lands. nine months of settler colonialism in action.

nine months of palestinians being proven, beyond a doubt, completely right in their assessment of israel. a state that is beyond redemption, a state that is not a partner for peace, a state that has never stopped reproducing the violence of its foundation since the day it was founded.

AITA for prioritizing my work/code over my son?

Context: I am a mercenary, and although I can’t reveal what my name is, a rather successful one. I have built up this career through years and years of hard work, and one of the reasons I became so successful is the fact that I see my word as my bond, and as such, I do not break any promises or contracts. 

Now, I have a family, and for obvious reasons, I didn’t want them involved in my job, so I kept it a secret from them, even my wife. It went well for a few years, but recently, some enemies of mine found out who they were and kidnapped my youngest son, ‘J’. Naturally, as soon as my wife told me what happened, I told her everything, and we went to rescue my son. 

It turns out J was being held hostage, and that they would only let him go if I gave them information about a former client of mine. My wife begged me to submit, but I refused; it would have gone against my code of honor and it would’ve been a massive stain on my reputation, one that I would never recover from. I need this job; it’s one of the only things that keeps me sane, and loosing it was something I couldn’t risk. I told my wife I could save J, and I did, but I wasn’t fast enough to stop his throat from being cut. 

Now my wife is mad at me for prioritizing my word/work over my son’s life. As an ex-soldier herself, I feel like she should be able to understand the need to prioritize the job over human life sometimes, but she won’t hear it. AITA?

Edit: to address some questions, yes, I am sure J survived his cut throat, I called the hospital to confirm it.

Edit #2: again, to address some questions, no, I haven’t been to visit my son in the hospital since. I haven’t seen my wife either, since she’s spending her days with him.

So, I just finished reading Maze of the Beast and made a rather interesting observation. 

This is the first book of the series where Dain features prominently. The decription of him from Lief’s perspective, and his growing respect for his strength and bravery all signal to Lief’s admiration of the other boy. Prior to this, Lief shows basically no romantic interest in Jasmine (he obviously cares for her a great deal, but I wouldn’t describe his feelings at this point as romantic). And a funny thing happens here. When Lief notices Dain admiring Jasmine for her skills and manner, he feels jealous. An odd thing, that, because you would think that if he was interested in Jasmine, he would be jealous in Jasmine showed interest in Dain, not the other way around, and she shows no such emotions. It’s hard to be jealous of someone feeling for another person, when those feelings don’t exist. Not to mention Lief has show little indication of similar feelings for Jasmine. So who, then is Lief jealous of? Is it possible that our dear boy is in fact rather hurt that Dain is showing an interest in his best friend, rather than himself? It’s something to think on, at least.

Basically, I’m saying that Lief had a crush on Dain well before he ever had one on Jasmine. Because seriously, someone try and provide me with a heterosexual explanation for what happens in that book, really.
