I gotta quit rendering bro
i did this forever ago and forgot to post it
Honestly for the longest time the way a lot of characters talked about bandits bothered me and I wasn't really able to place why until now. Fl4k outright calls them more savage than the beasts on Pandora (despite them Literally Collecting Organs and other things from the people they kill) and even Troy and Tyreen, two characters who ARE technically Pandoran because of their dad and who are head of bandit clans seeing their bandits as less than nothing and cannon fodder. I think the biggest issue with me is the fact that like. Under different circumstances this could've been *you*. You could've been from a heavily exploited place and fighting to survive only to get treated as cannon fodder and disrespected. If Troy and Tyreen grew up on Pandora things could've been very different for them and they could've been treated the exact same as they treat their followers.
YEAH ITS SO. Man. You can really tell that most of the Borderlands writing staff is White and American from how the word 'savage' gets thrown around, but even more so to how the consensus on bandits seems to be that they're hardly even people It's especially upsetting because these were, by all means, already disadvantaged people (Prisoner, lower ranking employees of dahl, etc) who got dumped and forgotten in a dangerous planet and who are just trying to survive while insanity takes its hold (probably from the combined constant stress, heat and how Everything Tries To Kill You all the time). But the part about Troy and Tyreen especially kills me.
Troy and Tyreen willingly abusing their connections to a group of people they KNOW are desperate enough to do anyrhing for protection and familiarity and exploiting them even further. It's so sad to think about for too long like. What if that was you. What if the only reason that Isn't you is because you were depraved of a connection as a child, as a teen and as an adult too. They would've been treated the same as they treat their followers right now, exploited the same way they are right now, and maybe more given they're sirens. Man. I wish we got to see more human sides to Tyreen and Troy, maybe even some genuinely sympathetic moments where they talk abiut Pandora with some fondness, even if it was just as a way to manipulate the cult more, even if their intention of opening the great vault and destroying everything was still on there, because I think it would be so essential to showing WHY they're so appealing to bandits. They have this twisted idea about Pandora and about themselves growing up in it, and maybe they're almost a little sad that they didn't actually get to experience it before, that there was never community for them before that moment. Fuuck
fun fake borderlands company propaganda
Kendrick’s performance was not just entertainment, it was a message.
there was this, the one thing that they didn’t show on tv.
There was also the separation of the American flag, the dancers walking backwards vs forwards, Samuel L Jackson dressed as Uncle Sam while saying his music was too ghetto, the beginning where he literally says “the revolution about to be televised, you picked the right time, wrong guy.”
this is why he’s my favorite rapper of this generation… idc
wake the fuck up people. THIS is what we need to do. Disrupt, be loud, be angry. Don’t be silent in the midst of a war, or you’re just as bad as the offenders.

I know of one person in this fandom who gets their panties in a twist every fucking time you headcanon literally anything about Jack because "erm he's a fascist! Is THAT the rep you want!"
Which is such a bullshit thing, I think. I remember an argument had popped up because of the fact that he's tan in canon. This is definitely gonna give away who I am but idrc.
Jack is undeniably TAN in canon, whether you think he's a poc or not falls solely on you, but he definitely has some color to him. He's no Angel. But basically, they drew him super pale and used in-game propaganda art as their backup as to "this is how he canonically looks!" Instead of models.
Then told me that I shouldn't be calling him a person of color because he's a fascist. And it's like. Honestly, I feel like him being a poc is kinda important to his character?
You gotta remember, his prejudice against Pandorans is lived behavior. This was stuff he had experienced whilst living on Pandora that had soured the reputation of the entire population in his mind. This wasn't just fed to him.
But, his hate for them doesn't reach their skin tones. It isn't about race, so him being a poc literally means nothing. And if we're gonna talk about historical stuff, people of color colonized, too! Spain!! Spain!! Pointing aggressively at Spain!
His mask being several shades lighter than his own face is not only something that he uses to set him higher than Pandorans— (look, my face is pure and untouched, yours is scarred. You wear a mask of terror, mine is of freedom.)— but it's also a subtle visual commentary on white saviors.
Race isn't important in the colonization of Pandora. It isn't racism, it's xenophobia— and there is a distinction when it comes to it. But it does come into play when viewing Jack.
Imo, to make him pale is to ignore a large visual clue that pulls him out of the crowd of Hyperion. For his time, if you look at all the people before him in power, no one looked like Jack. His tan is caused by being out in the sun, living on Pandora— something that Hyperion workers don't GET on Helios. He was a part of the working class, he was a part of the people. And that's how he turned out.
(just making it clear here that I don't get a shit what race u hc Jack as, as long as you recognize he's a lil dark is all I really care about tbh. And making it clear here that I am a white person, so if anything I say is offensive just tell me to shut the fuck up 🫡.)
.
I don’t need your silly personality tests. I know all I need to know about a person depending on how they view the Persephone and Hades myth.
