Why I think Miko Nakadai is arguably the best human character in TFP

Why I Think Miko Nakadai Is Arguably The Best Human Character In TFP

Don't misunderstand, I know Miko was handled haphazardly throughout the series' run. That said, aside from her skipping off into the battlefield, she was actually a great character - and, in my personal opinion, the actual audience surrogate character in TFP.

Now, let me explain.

Although Miko's backstory is told and not shown - a rich daughter who had everything she could ever want, up to and including two pure-breed cats and piano lessons from age three onwards (which, coincidentally, tells us she's brainy despite her antics) - much can be inferred from what snippets of her past we get, along with her interactions with the Autobots. For one, she obviously can't stand most adult supervision, which is likely because of a few things. For one, back home in Japan, Miko would have had to be proper and polite, always restrained, and had to do what she was told. While this is normal (to an extent) in the West, in the East this is etiquette that needs to be obeyed, especially if you're as well off as she is; her actions, specifically in Japan, will reflect on her parents, but to a far lesser extent in America. Thus, when presented with the freedoms of the USA, Miko not only jumps at the chance for an exchange program that will give her the mobility she craves, she also chooses the place that has the least amount of glamor. By extension of choosing to settle in Jasper, Miko's also displaying two other traits: she's not afraid of going to a place vastly different from her home, and she isn't disgusted by a small town with very little monetary value to it.

Secondly, Miko's disregard for authority from adults but deference to the 'Bots teases us with an insecurity - namely, an insecurity that no adult ever gives her a chance to make her own decisions.

Just think about it: All the times Miko's blown off the human adults, it's when they've tried to decide her life for her. Miko has, from what we can see, had her whole life dictated, up to and including those piano lessons. She may be a prodigy at almost everything, but her preferred instrument is the guitar - and yet, she wasn't given lessons in that from the time she was a toddler. Therefore, she feels confined and controlled by the authority of her elders. And so, while Miko may be able to sway Bulkhead into getting her out of detention and consistently slip past the watchful eyes of the 'Bots, it's out of a desperate motivation to control her own life. Now, she does hold too much interest in the battles and getting to watch them, but wouldn't you have that same eagerness if Gundams or Jaegers came to life before your eyes? Yes, she knows their lives are in danger, that they couldn't come home, but there's still a fantastical element to all of this about the Autobots. And it remains so because while she loves them all, Bulkhead is the only one who, while giving her life advice and trying to keep her in check/alive, lets her make her own decisions and take control of her life and her actions.

And that's why she keeps going to the field. That's why she only listens to the reprimands with half an ear and why she recovers so fast from Optimus' near death experiences, as well as Raf's close call with death.

And that's why Miko's world shatters when Bulkhead is left in a half-dead coma from his fight with Hardshell. Because the one person in the universe who gave her freedom and care without deciding her life for her was not just seriously injured, but possibly on death's door.

That's why Miko runs around without a care until the S2 episode "Hurt": because she wants autonomy to decide her life, even if it's stupid choices that could get her killed.

And after "Hurt", we see a new Miko. Yes, she remains gung-ho and fierce, but she stops running onto the battlefield. She takes less enjoyment from the War. Because now, with the reality of war fresh in her mind, she knows the risks and the stakes involved, and she will never take that or her friends for granted anymore. This is further proved when Miko 'sneaks' along for "Chain of Command", but with a twist: she asks Wheeljack if she can come along - and if memory serves, this is the first mission Bulkhead's been on with herself present since the events before "Hurt". Clearly, Miko is still worried about losing Bulkhead - only, this time, she values the words of the 'Bots, and now seeks permission to join a mission, though she wisely asks Wheeljack for this blessing.

This is the beautiful part of her arc, crowned by her battle with Starscream and his Seekers (which is also just straight up awesome.) When she's kicked the afts of everyone, and Starscream tries to intimidate her with his usual "I killed Cliffjumper" speech, Miko's response is this calm, slightly rough, retort:

"Big whoop. I snuffed Hardshell."

In this moment, Miko Nakadai is shown to have grown from an excitable child into an unyielding, but mature, adult warrior. She no longer treats the War and the 'Bots like a game, or a release. She treats them as her friends who she will gladly risk her own life for.

And that, in my opinion, makes her the best human protagonist in all of Transformers: Prime, and Transformers media in general.

As for what I said earlier about her being the true audience surrogate, be honest with yourselves: If any of us were given the chance to meet the Autobots, wouldn't you be just as irrepressible as Miko, as eager to help as she was, and tempted to go to the battlefield to see the action/make sure your 'Bot wasn't going to die? That's what I mean when I say she's the audience surrogate - Miko acts like we would, and learns as we would about the War and the 'Bots if we suddenly came across them.

Why I Think Miko Nakadai Is Arguably The Best Human Character In TFP

That's my two cents on Miko, and why she's the human character I respect the most in Transformers...probably of all time. If you liked it, I'm glad; Miko deserves better, and I hope I explained why well.

Til next time, folks!

I got the image of the Jack, Miko and Rafael learning to imitate Distressed/terrified Sparkling cries and using them against the decepticons. It’s a very efficient defense mechanism. Every cybertronian who heard them is freaking out because oh primus how is the squishy thing making that noise and I gotta protect it at all costs. The sheer chaos that would ensue as the ‘protect/rescue the sparkling’ programming kicks in full force.

——

The vehicons are clustered at the other end of the room panicking. They don’t know what to do. The human sparklings are looking right at them and making distress noises. The guilt is killing them.

Knockout going “is the car form less alarming?! If I turn into a car will you stop seeing me as the threat?!”

Breakdown is having a breakdown.

Starscream pinned to the wall on the other side of the room having an internal crisis. He doesn’t like this. Make it stop.

Soundwave makes no noise but you can FEEL the sheer distress radiating off of him.

Megatron is frozen. No thoughts, head empty. He’s not moving at all. He doesn’t know how to handle this.

——

The autobots have mixed feelings about this. They’re glad the kids have a way of defending themselves but please don’t do it near them. They’re stressed out enough as it is.

(This might sound kinda dumb but I thought it was kinda funny. Very tired while writing this)

Wait no this is actually brilliant.

The Decepticons never anticipated their long buried parental nature to be used against them. No one did. But they day the human children turned up on the battlefield looking far too confident, every Bot and Con present had the all encompassing feeling that something was terribly wrong. Their suspicions were quickly confirmed when, before the Decepticons could do much of anything to get the relics they were after, Rafael began to wail.

Normally, human screams meant nothing. But there was a certain pitch that sounded so close to a cry of distress from a sparkling that, to warriors who had not heard a sparkling in millennia, it was enough to send them running to help. In this case, the issue was only compounded as the children scattered like mice and started making the same noises. The Decepticons could hardly focus on the Autobots booking it to the relics as they frantically tried to locate the fictitious sparklings calling for aid.

The Vehicons managed to get to Jack, but he just kept looking up at them defiantly. Every time one of the dozen or so Vehicons on the field tried to grab him, blast him, or otherwise hurt him, Jack would chirp like a sparkling and send all of them scurrying back. It wasn't cute to the Vehicons. Having never seen actual sparklings but still having the coding needed to adore them, they looked at Jack and saw a weird frame-walker. They weren't sure what to do about it except try to haul themselves away while also keeping a vague circle around the human male.

Miko on the other hand made it a point to chase after Megatron and Soundwave, screeching like a sparkling about to be shredded. Neither stopped for her, but Megatron completely lost his train of thought every time that screech rang out. He could have been aiming at Optimus with a perfect head shot and he would be unable to fire as Miko's distressed sounds rang out in his audials. He KNEW she wasn't a sparking. His coding wasn't even that strong. But by Primus, hearing her screech was the same as watching a civilian get run over by a bus, repeatedly. Focus was impossible.

Soundwave wasn't much better. He didn't react outwardly, but the slowing of his steps and the way he tried to sidestep Miko gave away his distress. He avoided her like the plague, trying to refocus but being unable to really get far as Miko screamed like a demon. It was a fight against the Unmaker himself to keep Soundwave from bolting over to collect the sparkling who sounded so very upset.

Rafael, for his part, followed Miko's lead and harassed the other three members of High Command most often found out on the field. Breakdown ran screaming the moment Rafael started chirping at him. This was both out of fear of the frame-walker and to escape the inevitable overreaction of his coding. He may or may not have attempted parkour once or twice to get as far away from the smallest of the humans as possible.

Knockout tried to ignore Rafael when the kid chirped up at him, he really really did. But how does one ignore the Cybertronian equivalent of a soaking wet kitten meowing up at you? Simply put: you don't. Knockout gave in and quickly dropped down to try and soothe the non-existent sparkling every. single. time. Rafael pulled his noise trickery. He never fails to panic and attempt to flash colorful things at Rafael to get him to stop. Every Decepticon has since been endlessly disappointed in him.

Starscream, being terrified of things that really shouldn't be there, took the skies the instant the trio began screeching. Nope. Not today Unicron. He'll get the mission done or get the heck out of dodge to avoid coding coming online. He doesn't need empty nest syndrome on top of a crippling case of "I Love Power." He also doesn't need to deal with the horrific mental image of a squishy somehow managing to sound like a sparkling. Nope. Nope. NOPE.

The Autobots are grateful the kids can protect themselves a bit now. But by Primus, they have known NO peace since the kids figured it all out.

Tfw You Find Out Your Gay Best Friend/coworker Is Secretly A Car And Now The Government Is After You

Tfw you find out your gay best friend/coworker is secretly a car and now the government is after you

This… AU? has been sitting in my head since I saw the Bumblebee movie. Me wondering “huh what if Knockout were in a live action TF movie except one of the good ones” led down a rabbit hole that ended up in “Knockout’s been hiding out on earth working as a doctor in his holoform and ends up being good friends with June Darby who later gets caught up in the whole mess when his actual identity is inevitably exposed”. Not really an AU of anything in regard to TFP other than that’s the series Knockout and June come from, more of a “Knightverse what-if”.

I'm using "On Unicron's horns" for "somewhere far away from anything of importance". It's actually a corruption of russian colloquial "у чёрта на рогах", can be translated literally "on the horns of a devil/imp".

Я так и говорю в обычной жизни -- на Юникроновых рогах.

Cybertronian Colloquialisms - Primes Edition

So we've all heard "By the AllSpark!" or "What in the Pit?" or "Oh Primus" in our TF media. However, I feel like TF writers are missing out on the goldmine that is colloquialisms invoking the different Primes. So, here is a small collection of such colloquialisms, and please, feel free to add more if you have any of your own you use.

"Primus below!" - Exclamation similar to "God above!", invoking the fact that Primus is the core of Cybertron.

"Vector give me patience" - Often paired with "because if Prima gives me strength, I'm going to need bail money." The go-to for when somebot if getting on your last nerves.

"To Alchemist!" - A popular drinking toast, to thank Alchemist Prime for inventing high grade.

"The Three Below" - Refers to Solus, Onyx, and Micronus, the three Primes who formed the Well of AllSparks

"Maximum Blessings on you" - a stealth insult/curse from some dialects, where "Maximum" and "Maximo's" are nearly indistinguishable. As Liege Maximo was the Prime of Lies and Trickery, it's a fitting way to wish someone ill.

“Solus’s slag pit” - Used for something incredible, awful, and incredibly awful. Often used to refer to the latest high society fashion mess.

"Find peace or take it up with the Fallen." - In other words, calm down or screw off.

“As you say, my Liege” - A condescending remark towards a person who’s attempting to lie, cheat or mislead.

Again, if you have any primal colloquialisms you use for your fics, reblog and share them with the rest of us.

Thinking about that post I made about Miko with the apex armor and how her going to different aus would seriously mess them up. And it got me thinking what universes of the sort would suffer the most impact from her entering them?

My first thought was Bayverse because you know ✨guns✨ and stuff but honestly they're pretty used to all types of transformer psycho bs so I think they could adapt. It might take a bit but they eventually get there. (Also if we're being completely honest here she would probably fit into this universe too well. They would get along like a house on fire and a arsonist.)

Series like tfa where everything is sillier with the bots being significantly much smaller than tfp would definitely feel more of the negative impacts of Miko. Then again in some continuities we're humans don't exist or aren't relevant there's definitely a major psychological aspect that would apply to it.

I mean how would you feel if suddenly an organic alien child constantly ready to throw hands showed up in your inderstructable relic armor? Definitely not thrilled to say the least. Like just imagine it with a world like Tf one. They just went through some major politics of the century and as Optimus is about to start attacking Megatron out of nowhere this little pink screaming thing just slams into the decepticon. I do mean very little as tf one bots are ginormous dude, Google it. What would proceed to be peak comedy, not so much damaging but definitely entertaining.

I'm not that knowledgeable about many transformers continuities. I'm really only familiar with Bayverse, Earthspark, and tfp of course. So you guys gotta lock in for me with your tf knowledge. Debate in my reblogs/comments about this; would really love to see it.

Keeper -- a short comic about an angel meeting a robotic lighthouse keeper that doesn't know the world has already ended. Made in about 18 hours for a 24-hour 24-page* black and white comic challenge (that I arrived late to, ha.)

*the actual submission does not include the cover, which was created after the fact for this post.

This was a really great learning experience as someone who's... never really made a completed comic. I ended up really attached to the story by the end of the project (possibly due to all-nighter deliriousness lol) and ultimately am very proud of what I made. There are some things I'd still like to change, particularly text placement, but in keeping with the spirit of the challenge I've elected to leave it as is.

Welcome Back Bionicle Xisuma Design

welcome back bionicle xisuma design

some hcs below :))

Since mans is a voidwalker, he would not be able to survive in the overworld normally

Logically this means undergo a life-altering procedure to fuse yourself with a robotic suit, getting rid of about 70% of your organic mass in the process

He's one of the very few voidwalkers to ever undergo such a procedure and one of the very first to do so succesfully

Basically all that's left of him is his respiratory system and parts of his nervous system (as well as some spare tendons fused to finer mechanical parts, which, in combination with leftover nerves, allow for finer movement, such as in his forearms, allowing him to control his fully robotic hands much better)

Only some of his original vocal chords left and some rather aged speakers means he sounds characteristically.. tinny

He breathes air that is filtered and reduced in oxygen by the backpack on his armor

He has no need for a normal communicator; he has a communication system wired right into his brain (check the little antenna!!)

Pressure change between the void and the overworld means his organic eyes had to go :// He has bionic ones instead :)) They're not what you see on his visor though; in addition to filtering some light frequencies it functions as a display for emoting (mostly in the forms of emoticons, obviously)

Sleeping in a bed with the armor would be awkward, so instead it has a system to lock itself in place! X sleeps standing up and it's as funny as it can sometimes be unsettling

He's a bit overdue for a medical/mechanical check-up at this point, but really it's nothing a bit of duct tape and a soldering iron can't fix ;)))

When asked he says he could never regret shedding his organic form; he quite likes living in the overworld and running a server of his own :))

Oddly enough I have quite a bit of the same ideas.

... I really need to attend to my blog, aren't I?

I just thought of a crazy Transformers AU that somehow features Unicron redemption.

Takes place in a universe similar to Transformers Prime, but the war never reaches Earth until much, much, much later. So much later that by the time they reach Earth (correction: they don’t), the Unicron redemption has already finished. Also, Dark Energon is not poison to humans, but all other types of Energon that don’t spawn from Dark Energon are.

Anyways, that’s later, back to where this AU splits off ignoring the lack of the Autobots and Decepticons-

It’s the year 20XX (the year doesn’t really matter) and miners have just discovered some material they can’t dig through at all (a part of Unicron’s body, let’s say his right arm) that’s right next to this pool of purple stuff (Dark Energon).

Scientist go down to study this unbreakable material and strange liquid.

Eventually, a scanner is created that can ‘see’ through the unbreakable material and find hollow corridors and wires and machinery inside of the unbreakable material, along with pathways and ramps humans can travel through.

They use the scanner to find an entrance to the hidden… they assume it’s a laboratory, but it’s actually Unicron’s internals.

At some point between the scanner being made and finding the entrance, humans find a way to use Dark Energon as a booster to help their bodies fight diseases that is scarily efficient. They start looking into ways that this strange liquid can help plants grow.

They decide that not all the scientists should go into the ‘lab’, but they also need to be protected, so they hire some bodyguards to join the handful of scientists going down.

It takes a lot of journeys because they severely underestimated how big this ‘lab’ is and communications keep cutting out, so they have to set up physical lines to help with comms.

Eventually, they realize that whatever this place is, it somehow weaves through the mantle layer of the Earth, and down to the core of the planet, but there’s no pressure difference compared to ground level, the temperate just feels like a cool day in fall, and they finally notice that whatever this place… no thing is, it produces oxygen.

After roughly a year of exploring just Unicron’s right arm and top right area of his chest, they find Unicron’s spark chamber.

Unicron’s spark sees these curious humans, so just taps awake Unicron’s consciousness, but blocks him from taking control of his own body.

Unicron wakes up, is confused on why he is awake, then sees his spark effectively pointing at the over curious humans trying to touch his spark. (Yes, his spark has its own personality, I don’t know how this happened either.)

So, he just force-projects next to the humans in his normal appearance that is currently surrounded by the Earth, rapidly gets their attention because how the hell did he appear, and Unicron asks why they’re attempting to touch his spark.

The humans are just like “holy fuck god is real and he is nothing like everyone said he is like”

Unicron is very confused, but does not ask why the humans see him as a creator. Also, he is weirded out by all the questions they ask.

Slowly yet surely, Unicron warms up to these humans, learning out the planet that he’s the core (humans: creator god!) of, along with the species that inhabit this world.

He also learns that humans age and eventually die, so… he tries to not get attached but gets attached.

Humans start find the crystal version of Dark Energon and Unicron decides to help the humans with using it for their own purposes.

Humans finally figure out how to use Dark Energon as a fertilizer without causing a smaller harvest while having benefits to the crop.

Finally, at some point, Unicron begins to guide the humans on making Cybertronian-like technology.

Using these newfound technologies, humanity manages to set up bases on other planets and they figure out a way to infinitely making Dark Energon, which surprises even Unicron.

Dark Energon becomes a common resource that, with the right minds, can be used for anything.

On off-Earth stations or artificial planets, humans make sprawling environments for Earth’s animals, plants, insects, fish, any creature that is still alive on Earth.

Let’s assume it takes until 24XX until humanity can completely live off planet and freely move around the universe. Religions of old are only still known for history reasons, save for a few. While priests do still exist, they mostly just help Unicron with writing and translating because he physically can’t due to his inability to control his body.

…until now. (The “priests” still help him, because he’s fragging massive.)

His spark finally lets Unicron gain control over his body. Unicron doesn’t act right away, but once the humans learn that his body can move, they convince him to move, spread his godly body and continue watching over his creations.

Unicron is convinced, but clearly says that there must be a way to spot any debris from hitting anything made by the humans in space. This is easily agrees upon and construction on a force field begins.

The force field is successfully finalized and Unicron can finally move his body once more. Debris and magma goes everywhere, but are caught by the force field. The stuff in the field to shooed away towards the bottom by Unicron’s full form and the force field goes down.

Humanity and Unicron begin exploring and, at last, run into the Autobots and Decepticons who had used up the last of the Energon reserves on whatever planet they had brought the war to.

Needless to say, both the Autobots and Decepticons end up freaking out because that’s fragging Unicron but he’s… chill?

After the instinctive freak out, both groups of Cybertronians are very confused, humanity is very curious, and Unicron is just wondering who the hell these creatures are and why do they look like his brother and his creations?

Yea, that’s all I got for now. Have fun if you decide to run with this AU. I don’t know how this happened either.

There are a lot of little lines in TFA that sort of tip you off that something isnt quite right with the "heroic autobots" and it just gets more pronounced once you've noticed it. Like everything about Optimus's speech in the first episode. "We're all cogs in the great big autobot machine." Emphasizing the needs of the collective over everything else (and notice that this is apparently something he says a lot. Something he's internalized). "Don't try to be a hero, it's not in your programming." Idk bro sounds like functionism to me. But probably the most unsettling line is Ratchet's implication that they can just.. delete emotions. Just run a program and bam! That feeling of dissatisfaction with your lot in life? Gone. Thats a big old red flag if Ive ever seen one.
