fun fact for those who don’t know this but when a snake (or just about anything) is born with two heads like that, it is indeed called a janus, thus this would be called a janus snake. snakes are far more likely to be born with two heads than any other species, iirc

“You’re too hard on yourself,” Janus murmurs, voice entirely too knowing, entirely too understanding, and Patton doesn’t know that he can handle the depth of this empathy. “You deserve to have the support that you’ve been trying so hard to provide.”

Patton is struggling far more than he wants to admit, both with his loneliness and the crushing weight of the mistakes he’s made, and it’s sending him spiraling. It doesn’t help that apparently, his amphibian traits are here to stay.

It is a grey day today.

He hasn’t had one in a while, but he’s sensed it approaching for the past few days, so he supposes it’s his own fault that it hits this bad; he willfully ignored all the warning signs, pushed aside his fatigue and his slowly souring mood, telling himself that he was alright, that he was being silly, that the feelings would pass. And now, the world is grey, the colors leeched from it like a black-and-white film, and a weight sits heavily on his chest, making every breath a struggle.

He needs to get up. He knows this. Knows he should have been up hours ago, that he should be making breakfast, eggs and sausage and pancakes, should be smiling and happy and ready to greet the world. The others are probably waiting for him, wondering where he is, why he’s not there.

Summary: All Logan wanted was to sink to the bottom of a lake, quiet and undisturbed. None of the other sides would have to know how he went.

But things didn’t always go according to plan.

Logan curled his toes around the edge of the dock, cool breeze brushing past him in the darkness of the Imagination. He ran a hand through his hair, closing his eyes.

Now or never.

He splashed into the water, perhaps a little more ungracefully than he would’ve liked, a little less poetic than he hoped. His feet touched the bottom, so he started idly pushing himself out further into the black water of the lake. He opened his eyes for a moment, moonlight dimly reaching through the water.

His lungs began to resist, so he opened his mouth. It was pointless to try and do anything else, so he let the water fill his throat, not moving at all anymore. Silent and unobtrusive in the night, and he would be gone.

Whenever Virgil is too tired or sleep-deprived, he keeps saying Roman’s name slightly wrong (and sometimes more than slightly wrong), and Roman can never tell if he’s doing it on purpose or not.

He cannot love Patton.

But god, does he want to.

It doesn’t take Janus very long to fall in love with Patton, when it comes down to it. It takes him far longer to accept it, and to allow it to grow.

It’s unbelievable, how fast he falls.

He prides himself on his rationality, his pragmatism. He’s no Logan, of course, but it has been a very long time since he allowed his emotions to get in his way. Over the years, that has cost him so much– his relationship with Virgil, his ability to trust and be trusted, any moral compass that he may once have possessed, among other things. But he has never regretted it, not once, because his primary directive is to help Thomas, and if he has to play the villain to do so, so be it. Lord knows none of the others see the world for what it is, are willing to do what it takes to ensure Thomas’ success.

But the scene is like this: time passes, Thomas begins to listen to him, and one day, Patton smiles. He doesn’t know at what, doesn’t know why, because he wasn’t paying attention until now, but Patton smiles, wide and bright, and in that moment, Janus would do anything for that smile to be directed at him.
