STOP Slandering Steve Rogers

I just had a thought on Steve’s initial argument against the Accords.

What if they send us somewhere we don’t wanna go?

What if they don’t send us somewhere we think we should be?

He already had a point in his life when he knew he could be helping the people who needed it, but was limited to a star-spangled costume and jaunty theme tune. He’s been put on the bench before, and he’s seen people he cared about suffer because of it. If they’d let him out sooner, maybe Bucky and his unit would never have been captured. Maybe Bucky would never have been tortured and hurt and made into Zola’s plaything.

Given the war that Steve fought in, and given that he saw how America hung back until Pearl Harbour happened, I don’t imagine he’s ignorant about how they could end up being put on the shelf while conflicts raged, until they were absolutely necessary. On top of that, he has watched his identity as Cap be used for politicking, to sell war bonds, to encourage patriotism and all that jazz, even after his death.

And here’s a thought: Tony was the one who created and unleashed his weapons on the world. Steve was one of those weapons. It’s the difference between being the seller and being the product. Tony sees it as a quality control. Steve sees it as losing his autonomy and becoming that dancing monkey again.

Chechnya is holding gay men in concentration camps

Gay men are being held in “camps” in the Chechen Republic where they are subjected to torture and beatings, human rights campaigners have claimed.

More terrible, deeply triggering news from Chechnya in Russia: Reports indicate that gay men are not only being abducted, but held in concentration camps, where they are being tortured and a few have been killed.

The claims follow reports last week that 100 gay men had been rounded up and imprisoned in Chechnya, with at least three people allegedly murdered. The allegations were made by a Russian newspaper and human rights campaigners. “In Chechnya, the command was given for a ‘prophylactic sweep’ and it went as far as real murders,” independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta claimed. Speaking to the MailOnline, Svetlana Zakharova from the Russian LGBT network, said:  “Gay people have been detained and rounded up and we are working to evacuate people from the camps and some have now left the region.

“Those who have escaped said they are detained in the same room and people are kept altogether, around 30 or 40. They are tortured with electric currents and heavily beaten, sometimes to death.”

I don’t have words. Amnesty International is circulating a petition seeking justice. Hold these people in your hearts. Truly, I’m speechless.

As someone who is in their 40′s and who was around at the dawn on the internet and online fandom - who moved from only being able to find fanfics in zines bought at a corner table at the far end of a con to things like yahoogroups, to ff.net, to livejournal, to message boards, to here, the problem in fandom today is moderation. In the old days anti’s would have been kicked out of a community. They wouldn’t even be allowed a platform to spread their vile. Any person raising shit within a yahoogroups community, within a livejournal community, within a message board, would have been given a warning, then expelled entirely with repeated bad behavior.

Tumblr fandom has forgotten this basic fact:

It’s rude, selfish and intolerant (to the fact that tastes vary) to post hate. Why? Because other people like the thing you are hating on and it upsets them to see that hatred of the thing they like. Would you go up to someone at SDCC wearing a Deadpool costume and tell that person Deadpool sucks? No. That would be an gigantic display of bad manners (and poor parenting on your parents’ part) and a serious display of a character flaw on your part, especially as what constitutes ‘suck’ is subjective (in my opinion Deadpool does NOT suck). It’s putting your need to be an asshole over the feelings of others. 

Same principle should apply on Tumblr.

Before anyone hits the ‘post’ button they should stop and consider the following:

Does this post contribute positively to the community?

How will this post affect others?

If the post I am making were about something that I love that someone else was trashing on, how would I feel to read it?

Hate posters are under the impression that only their mindset matters, only their feelings, and they care little for the feelings of others, which is not only intolerant, and selfish, but it is an attitude that should be discouraged at all costs by the rest of the community. It should not be an attitude that is allowed to fester within fandom. I wish more people would publicly call this very poor behavior out. 

Freedom of speech is a responsibility as much as it is a right… a responsibility to choose our words wisely and be mindful that this world is a shared one.
