Exactly. Thank you. I’m so tired of haters
(not putting this under the cut because i want people to read it, but warning for MAJOR ENDGAME spoilers)
i’m doing my best to stay away from endgame discourse, but boy oh boy, the fact that fandom (especially the st0ny and the stu///cky fandons) has taken steve’s ending not as “oh, the writers gave this character an ending i do not enjoy” but as “this character sucks and is horrible/evil/a psycho” is… both the least surprising and most frustrating thing i’ve experienced in fandom.
because i just… i don’t know. how much more steve has to do? he stands there and takes it as tony snaps at him (and look tony’s been through A LOT at this point, i’m not gonna be upset at him for lashing out in such a situation, god knows the poor man needed it; but, yes, while he was saying a bunch of stuff that’s fair, he also said a ton of completely unfair things, such as acting as if ultron was a great idea and acting as if steve wasn’t there for him because he didn’t want to, and not because, you know, TONY DIDN’T CALL HIM); then, after they fail to retrieve the stones, he tries to move on, dedicates his life to helping others. he’s doing terribly in those five years - the team is all scattered around, he mostly can’t talk to anyone except nat (who’s also in a terrible emotional state), he lost all his closest friends in the world and his instinct is still to help, to sit down and listen to other people’s problems and tell them he’s proud of them when they’re making small progress. when scott comes back, he goes to tony once, understands his refusal and doesn’t push it - later, when tony comes back, steve even asks if he’s sure about giving him the shield, gives him one more change to back out and close off to him if he wants to.
then later in the movie tony asks him if he trusts him, steve says yes. he doesn’t get to see his best friend’s body or even grieve her properly - he just sits down and cries in silence, suffers in silence (as he’s done through his entire life), and then stands up ready to keep going, because he must.
then during the final battle he wields mjolnir - thor screams “i knew it” which proves to us steve could have done it all along and just choose to not lift at the party in aou because he knew it would hurt thor’s feelings - he fights thanos with all he has, his shield is destroyed, and then when his friends come back he gets to say “avengers assemble” one time and fight, again, with all he has.
then he gets the task of going back with the infinity stones. and i’m not a fan of that ending, i’m really not, but the movie goes OUT OF ITS WAY to explain that he can’t change the future, he’s creating an entirely new timeline, he can’t stop the bucky we know from being tortured or the shield we know from getting infiltrated by hydra or anything of the sort. he knows that to his friends he’ll only be gone for five seconds, he knows they won’t miss him or need him in the meantime, so he gives himself this one thing and chooses to live a happy life with the woman he loves.
and like. you don’t need to love this ending! i don’t! there are plotholes and many questionably things about it and it’s totally fine to be upset at them and point them out. i’m just left wondering why every time other characters do things fandom doesn’t agree with, the blame is on the writing; but when steve does it, the blame is on him, and fandom hurries to tear him down and bash him as much as they can for failing to be the version they carefully crafted of him through fanfiction and shitty meta (the version that’s nothing but a caregiver to hold bucky or tony and tell them how great they are and how much he failed them).
and it’s just GLARING to me how every character gets to receive a little bit of empathy, a moment of reflection to think about their struggles and their own feelings, but somehow steve doesn’t, and everything he does must always be interpreted in the worst light possible and discussed as such.
i don’t agree with the way the directors choose to finish steve’s arc, but they took a comic character that a lot of people didn’t know/care about and crafted this amazing character that became such a beloved icon for an entire generation. chris evans starred this movies and consolidated himself as one of the best superheroes’ performances of all time, on par with reeves’ superman. and instead of being grateful, or, god, even being bitter while affording him the slightest bit of respect, fandom tears him down for every. single. little. reason. and again, i get why people are angry, i get why people are upset, but the way people decide to direct this anger to bash this character and all he represents is just so incredibly telling and so upsetting.
tl;dr: steve rogers was a gift to the mcu, but, boy, the mcu fandom does not deserve steve rogers.
It’s such a simple letter I’m amazed at the lack of comprehension from people. But really. Some think that it’s very selfish letter (whatever that means), some think that he blames Tony for everything in this letter or trying to make him feel guilty (???) and some even think that “Steve begs Tony to take him back” (wtf?). I have actually seen all those versions on tumblr and ao3.

STEVE ROGERS’ LETTER TO TONY STARK WAS IN NO WAY SELF SERVING.

He is so badass in this. Love this guy.
MULTIPLE CONTUSIONS DETECTED.
Let’s talk about the “pep talks” in CACW - Steve and Wanda’s chat in her room and Tony and Peter’s chat in his room.
I see folks talk about the mentoring parallels, or even suggest that the talks are identical. I DON’T see anybody talk about the key, crucial difference between them.
One of the mentors was talking about sustainability, and one of them never talks about it.
Look. Superheroes are just like any other caregivers: counselors, social workers, nurses, paramedics. If they’re gonna address what taking care of other people is really like, they’ve got to figure out what’s sustainable for them… not just physically but emotionally and mentally. Caregiving is brutal fucking work. Burnout and compassion fatigue and spiritual damage are always hovering close.
Steve is engaging Wanda directly on the issue of sustainability - specifically on the issue of limitations. Not being destroyed by one’s mistakes. Acknowledging the fact that one person can’t always protect everybody, it’s impossible. “If we can’t find a way to live with that, next time maybe nobody gets saved.” Steve is sharing his hard won understanding of what works for him… when he loses somebody on his watch, he pushes past his own guilt and grief because there’s somebody else out there who might be helped by his future actions. He is still capable of good. He focuses on them to keep going.
I won’t call stoic soldier Steve a paragon of flexible mental health… but here he has great wisdom. He has humility, and that’s the key. He can admit that he failed, and accept it, and know that he still has gifts that help others. That’s something he knows deep in his bones. This humility allows him to collaborate well with others so that individual, personal limitations are better compensated for.
In the other scene, Tony listens to Peter reflect back to him exactly how Tony feels about being a superhero - saving the world is entirely up to him. The language may sound parallel to Steve’s, but in reality its meaning is completely different. “When the bad things happen, they happen because of you,“ Peter says. Now that some event has given Peter his hero identity (and ever since Tony got his, way back), evil and tragedy is now entirely about them. It’s about their ability to stop it. They are defined by their failures. This is in no way sustainable.
This is built on an immature narcissism that can be grown out of. Peter is a sweet kid who takes on too much. Hopefully he’ll grow past this soon. Tony hasn’t gotten there yet. Tony still has no ability to face his own limitations with any peace. This has been his trajectory for a while and we are watching him crumble because of it. His panic attacks about it overwhelm him and he won’t get help. He has been comprehending the depth of possible threats for years but has only ever conceptualized the solution coming from him and his tiny self alone. So, since he thinks the solution must come from him, he sees his own limits as betraying the whole world, and refuses to acknowledge or address them. He doesn’t know how to truly collaborate with anybody else. Despite being surrounding by compassionate, gifted people, Tony puts it all on his own shoulders, and so he finds only inadequate solutions.
Tony unilaterally leaps at the Accords partly because of this issue - because he intuits that they somehow address limitation, and he craves some resolution to this pain he’s in. But he still doesn’t do the work. He doesn’t look at ALL the consequences and the structure of the Accords. He still won’t let go of the narcissism that underpins every decision he makes. He hears Peter reflect that youthful short-sightedness back to him and he has no wisdom to offer to counterbalance it.
Steve imparts practical guidance to a young Wanda struggling with her own gifts and limits. Tony sees in Peter a kindred spirit at about the same level of emotional maturity.

You guys, I know, this blog isn’t about politics but I want you to know that there are Anti Corruption and Anti Putin and his system Protests all over Russia, literally 10000 people in big cities. I care deeply about Russian people wanting freedom, of our LGBT, feminist, liberal communities. They are being oppressed, shut down, closed and beaten by police, that should be protecting them. They stand against system. But russian massmedia chose not to talk about it. They are trying to prevent it by enforcing the police. The protest are huge. Please give them moral support too. This is much needed in current situation.

Decided to put this in a separate post.
Quick Breakdown:
-Alexey Navalny (main opposition leader in Russia) was poisoned with Novichok, a chemical nerve agent that is internationally outlawed.
-He nearly died, and was in a coma for a while. Then he spent a few months in a clinic in Germany recovering
-He released investigations proving that his poisoning was ordered and carried out by the Russian government (not that you would need the investigations to know that, but watch them anyway. They include a phone call to one of the agents actually involved in the poisoning. Check out the video, its called “I called my murderer and he confessed”, bc Navalny is a badass and even his Youtube video titles reflect that)
-While in Germany for treatment, the Russian gov suddenly decided they wanted to convert his old suspended prison sentence (for bogus charges, obviously) to a real one. On the LAST day of that suspended sentence. To be very clear, this suspended sentence is for a FABRICATED crime. As recognized by the European Court of Human Rights (the decisions of which Russia is supposed to abide by).
-Despite the risks, Navalny came back to Russia. He was arrested right in the airport, denied access to phone calls and his lawyer, and then put on trial the same day IN THE FUCKING POLICE STATION. His lawyer, who had been standing outside the station for hours trying to get access to him, was told about the trial a minute before it commenced. He was given a 30 day sentence (for what? who knows. just because) and is currently being held in prison. There is a very large chance that he will get his old suspended sentence turned into a real one (of 3.5 years, or 2.5 if they count out the time he spent under house arrest). Or he’ll get an even larger sentence. Or they’ll just kill him.
-After he got arrested, Navalny’s team released a new investigation they had been sitting on; one about Putin’s lavish lifestyle. In 4 days, it got 75 MILLION views. For context, the population of Russia is about 144 million.
-Navalny was briefly able to access his phone through a meeting with his lawyer and made a post, saying (with his usual dark humor) that he is not planning on hanging himself or slitting his wrists, that he walks down the stairs very carefully, and has the “blood pressure of an astronaut”. What he means is that if something happens to him in prison, it’s not suicide, or an accident, or a heart attack. Since then, his lawyer has not been able to see him, and is not even sure of his whereabouts
- This Saturday, there were protests all over Russia. People are taking to the streets, demanding that Navalny is freed. This is despite the fact that students have been threatened with expulsion if they are spotted at protests, ditto with adults losing jobs. And despite violence from Russian police/OMON officers.
I’ve only laid out the main events: theres an infinite amount of other horrific and absurd details to this story. But please take a moment to care about this.
