Celebes warty pig or Sulawesi pig

Although a number of subspecies have been recognized, they were disregard after further studies. Today, the Celebes Warty Pig is regarded as a monotypic taxon. This pig is the only species that has been domesticated apart from the Wild Boar. The fact that is being semi-domesticated may have change its appearance.

Vietnam warty pig, Heude’s pig, Indochinese warty pig

This pig was described from two skulls collected in southern Vietnam in 1892, near to Ho Chi Minh City. Another specimen (an incomplete but apparently fresh skull of a juvenile male) has been reported from Ban Ni Giang in the Annamite Mountains.

Despite studies being done in the last century is still unclear if this was a new different species, a subspecies of the Wild boars from Indochina or even the same animal. This is just a reminder of how much is needed to be known about species in order to classified them correctly and see if somehow, we are able to understand them better.

There are fewer than 1,000 African Wild Asses left in the wild, and they are classified as Critically Endangered. This might be surprising, considering that Donkeys are commonly seen animals. Javan Warty Pig

These pigs are also killed by farmers because they eat their crops at night. It is also seen as a trophy by hunters due to its large size. Curiously, another threat to this animal comes from natural causes. It’s closest relative the Banded Pig (Sus scrofa vittatus) shares similar habitat ranges as the Javan Pig, competing for resources and also cross-mating creating hybrids of the both.

South-Central Black Rhinoceros(Diceros bicornis minor)

Also called south-central hook-lipped rhinoceros. The most common subspecies Black Rhinoceros. However, it is also critically endangered.

Have you ever drawn animals that are definitely extinct but only have limited photographs, if any?

Like the dodo! But I see taxidermied photos of it so I guess that's fine.

Hello! Thank you! I have done some. In some, the photo references I have are really bad and in a few others, they are just mere written descriptions. I had to figure out a way to do them and make them look believable (The Northern Sumatran Rhino, The Indian Javan Rhinoceros, the Vietnamese Javan Rhinoceros, Quagga, and the Caspian Tiger) Some others arent' extinct but they don't have good photographs or they are not complete, they just show a part of the animal like the Indonesian Javan Rhinoceros, the Vietnam Mouse Deer, the Water Chevrotain, etc) I won't do the Dodo because I'm just working on mammals. The idea is to do them all so I don't think I'll have the time to do birds. I would love to do them too though. Thanks again for your interest. Working on this one was challenging because there is only one picture from 1884 taken of this animal before its extinction. However, when I have to put inventive ways to create an animal as realistic as possible is when I enjoy the illustration more. 

Tarpan

Scientists have long grappled with the origins of the domestic horse, seeking to establish its ancestral roots. Initially, there were two distinct horse populations: the Prewalsky horse in Europe and the Tarpan in Asia. Regrettably, the Tarpan became extinct at the dawn of the 20th century, leaving no DNA samples behind. This absence of genetic evidence has posed a significant challenge in determining the true origins of the domestic horse. Nevertheless, studies analyzing the DNA of the Prewalski horse have provided compelling evidence of a close relationship between these horses and their domestic counterparts.

Numerous endeavors have been undertaken to revive the Tarpan breed. While the Heck Horse bears the closest resemblance in terms of appearance, their genetic makeup tells a different tale. Oliver's warty pig / Mindoro warty pig

Listed as Endangered because its extent of occurrence is less than 5,000 km² being its area of occupancy less than 500 km². Even though accurate records are lacking, the distribution range of this pig is severely fragmented. There is also a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat, and in the number of mature individuals caused by over-hunting. Hybridization with free-ranging domestic pigs introduced and maintained by hinterland communities is an additional and likely serious additional threat.
