I absolutely loved doing this one. I knew there were different subspecies of giraffes but I never put attention to them. I loved the fading light color spots on the very light skin tone of this one. To me, this giraffe is by far, the easiest to distinguish. Is the lightest giraffe in color, the patches are also pale, and is the only one that survives in the North West of Africa. Store Instagram Niger Giraffe / West African Giraffe Previously, this animal was found in Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Niger, and Chad. Today just can be found in Niger. By the 90s, the number of this animal decreased to mere 49 individuals. Today is protected and its numbers increase to about 600. This giraffe was confused by zoos in Europe. They thought they had this subspecies of giraffes, while in reality, they had the Kordofan one (the one I show in my last post on Giraffes). This happened because the populations that inhabit North Cameroon and Chad were thought to be Niger Giraffes while in fact were Kordofan. Whales are divided into three families. This is the second and biggest: the Balaenopteridae, which contains the biggest animal that ever inhabits the earth. However, we will start with its smallest member but also the fastest: the Mink Whale. This is the most common whale and is probably due to its not being commonly hunted by humans. Its size is too small (about 10m) and does not have enough oil yield, so hunting it is not worth it. Nonetheless, the hunting of this whale has increased.

Its name is confusing because it was first confused and classified wrongly. Its name is derived from the Norwegians who usually refer to any type of small whale as Minkie or Minkies' hval.

The Dwarf Mink Whale was described as a new subspecies not long ago and it is not sure yet if is one. Still has not scientific name. Mink Whale in captivity.

Mink whale has been tried to keep in captivity in Mito Aquarium, in Japan a few times. Most of the specimens died in few weeks while in 1956, the last one was able to scape a net aquarium after 37 days spinning the pool in the same direction.

My artwork featuring all equine species and subspecies is now available in my store. It's been about a year since I began working on horses, so it's satisfying to see it completed. Although they are a well-known and beloved family, there are still some discrepancies among biologists. Questions persist, such as whether the extinct Tarpan should be classified as a species or not, and even the classification of domestic and feral horses. Moreover, it's concerning that four subspecies of this family are already extinct.

Pygmy Right Whale

I had no idea this one exists. How awesome can be a small version of a right whale? Here it is, the Pygmy Right Whale.

Not much is known about this animal since is one of the whales that has been studied the less. Often confused at sight with the Minke Whale, observation of the Pygmy Right Whale is rather scarce. Lives in the Southern Hemisphere in waters of temperatures that range from 5 to 20 °C.

Antilocapridae Family Sonoran Pronghorn

This is a very interesting family and a very small one. It is formed by one species and five subspecies. Today, the Sonoran Pronghorn.

Owes its name to the Sonoran desert where it inhabits. I could not find physical differences with the other subspecies. However, these subspecies can survive longer without water.

The Pronghorns are the fastest mammal in the New World. It is often called the Antelope of America because of its resemblance to the African ones, however, its closest relatives are the giraffes.

This subspecies along with the others is endangered. It shares the habitat with an active United States Air Force Bombing range.

No more than 200 hundred survived in the United States and is believed that in Mexico its numbers are even lower. The Indian Javan Rhinoceros was often mistaken for the Greater one-horned Rhinoceros due to their coexistence in the 19th century. This can't happen to you. Join the club Here to learn more about animals. By the way, this is the only existing illustration of this animal.

Now it’s the time for the less glamorous horse’s cousins, the Ass. An animal that shockingly is doing way worst than horses in terms of conservation and yet this really have had to do the dirty job. While the horse is exhibit proudly as a man companion and sometimes an extension of human’s soul, the Ass, on the other hand is like the one that is better not to be shown and the one in charge of the hardest and dirtiest jobs. Incredibly this obvious disparagement is reflected as well in its quantity due that from the four subspecies that exist, one is extinct and the other two are close to suffer the same fate.

Nonetheless, ass as regarded as stupid animals and are usually portrayed as such, nonetheless is an animal that is close in intelligence to the horse, if not the same. Besides, they are excellent mothers and can defend their offspring furiously. An animal to keep an eye on, to care and value as another really important animal that was crucial in the evolution of humanity. More love for this misunderstood animals, please.

Nubian Wild Ass: Believed extinct in the wild, some estudies of DNA were done to a feral population living in the Caribbean island of Bonaire (Keep in mind that this animal is from Africa) The DNA results were positive as a nearly pure DNA of the believed extinct Actual Nubian Wild Ass. Although further studies need to be done, give a little of hope to the survival of this animal. Somali Wild Ass: The fate of this animal was saved by a project in the Zoo of Basel in Switzerland, that has been able to keep the captive animals in a robust number.

Atlas Wild Ass: Extinct in 300 AD, this animal was used in the roman circus and hunting. It is estrange that many animals with the name “Atlas” on it, has been extinct as we will see further.

I loved drawing this one. As someone commented on a dolphin I posted from the same family: Is like the pandas of the water. Again, what fascinates me the most about doing this animal encyclopedia is that I get to know mammals I didn't know existed and I can share that information with you all. Thank you for following and being interested. Let's see what can we learn from this wonderful dolphin.

Hector's Dolphin Hector's Dolphin lives exclusively on the coasts of New Zealand. They can live up to 22 years and are some of the smallest dolphins in the world. (If I'm not wrong the Vaquita is the smallest). Because of its size, predators can be numerous. Blue sharks, White sharks, Broadnose sevengill sharks, and probably Killer whales and Mako sharks. They hunt using echolocation which is basically finding prey using sound (Just as bats do). Their clicks (the sound they make) isn't as complex as other animals and travel short distances. Nonetheless is enough for them, since their environment is crowded and sound wouldn't be able to go long distances anyways. This animal is not in danger but its subspecies, the Māui Dolphin is probably one of the most endangered dolphins in the world, if not the most.
