A 16 year-old pinup drawing that served as my entry into this week’s 'Illustration Friday' contest, themed around the word: “DOG”.. The initial layout sketch was provided by my good friend and fellow Layout buddy: David Pietila. “Soopermutt” was a character featured in issues of the “Animal Adventures” comic-book, published in the 1950′s by ‘Timor Publications’..
Attended TCAF 2013 on Saturday afternoon, and felt fortunate to pick up the last copy of Basil Wolverton's 'SPACEHAWK' book from the Fantagraphics table.. Also very much enjoyed chatting with artist Jim Rugg and purchasing his 'SUPERMAG' book.. Great show!!
JOE DUDLEY -- Courageous Candy Store Owner!
Sketchbook study of an old comic-book panel found in a “CRIME DOES NOT PAY” reprint volume.. The original artist was Dan Barry, I believe. I like the idea of doing a small ‘zine with isolated panels like this one. And I’m hoping to use this image in the future, for something along those lines..
A Julie Newmar-esque "CAT GIRL" illo inked by my friend Rodney Dunn, back in '97.. A talented artist, who (sadly) ended his own life in June 2005. "Dynamite" was the nickname he gave me.. I still miss him.
A pair of freelance illustration jobs by artist/friend: Dave Stevens.. The 2nd one has been widely published, but has been rarely seen in it’s original context. These were ads for BOSS Audio products that appeared in GUITAR WORLD magazine, back in 1985. It took me years to locate the "Feedback Monster" version in the bad olde pre-eBay days! Fortunately, Toronto had a number of good Used Books stores that carried back-issues of old mags.. Dave famously drew himself into the "Sampler Safari" one, as "Professor D. Sampler".. He’s sporting the jodphur pants that he'd already made famous in his ROCKETEER comic stories.. Intriguing to me, are the mail-in offers for larger 18" x 24" posters of these ads? I've never seen one. And it makes me wonder how many were printed, and if any of them are still around?
I recognize a lot of these images from episodes that I’ve worked on.. But it’s been so long, that I can’t really remember anymore. Part of getting old, I guess?.. I have a bunch of Layout lists stored downstairs somewhere, and one of these days I’m gonna catalog what I did and where!
1990 Beetlejuice Valentines
Dunno how or where I found this image, but I've always loved it!.. Wally Wood was a genuine Master at combining cartoony poses with solid construction.. My best guess would be that this was a back cover to one of his 'WITZEND' fanzine issues?..
"TOILET HUMOUR" In The Literal Sense..
I was cleaning up my studio room, when I unearthed a large manila envelope. It contained folders of some Spümco-related artwork that I'd purchased from an eBay Seller, back in 2005.. One folder contained rough layouts from a comic-book story, featuring: "NUTTY the Friendly Dump" ! This past year, I finally got to see the finished-version of the story, when it was included in IDW Publishing's 'John K. Presents COMIC BOOK' collection..
SUBWAY CREEP!!
Sketchbook composite of story panels found in an old 50′s-era Crime comic-book.. The original artist was Bill Draut. It was entitled “MASHER!”, about a sleazy creep that liked to proposition young women riding the subway. I’ve been inspired by Charles Burns’ “LOVE NEST” book. And he recontextualized parts of this same story, too..
A page I bought directly from Mignola, at the 2001 SDCC.. I had a few others, but hadda sell 'em on eBay a few years back. This one though, I couldn't part with.. It's going to the grave with me!
About 6 months ago, I had the good fortune to work Layout over at 'Yowza Digital' on a webcartoon for Nickelodeon, entitled: "Welcome To The Wayne".. Because I'm an old-timer, I had to be eased into working in a purely digital way, using Photoshop on a Cintiq.. I think I adapted pretty quickly. But early on, I was still drawing my Layouts traditionally. And I'm posting a couple examples here.. Doing the warped-anamorphic BG's was challenging, but a lot of fun!
I'm a guy that likes to draw.. Here's some of my own artwork. And images by others, that inspire me.. My Instagram My Blogger My CAF Gallery My Facebook My LinkedIn My Portfolio My IMDb My AI interview
