Something you will not hear in school...Alf Whiting was born in Winchester VA. He enlisted in the Army in 1861 serving in Company K, 13th VA Infantry with Isaac Brady, later they were transferred to the 11th VA Cavalry. They were both captured and jailed at Cumberland, MD. Mr. Brady was sent to Camp Chase, OH and Alf was offered his freedom, but refused to take the oath of allegiance or to remain with the Federals. Mr. Brady’s Father, Samuel D. Brady, who lived near Cumberland went on Whiting’s bond for $6,000.00 in the condition that he would not cross the river into VA during the war. Whiting attended every Confederate reunion within reach, as well as funerals of veterans and selected his own pallbearers among them.

Confederates were not traitors. In fact the first “insurrection” in our shared American history was in New England.

In 1995 the US Postal Service issued Civil War Commemorative stamps… that’s about the only thing the Federals got right! They even used “War Between the States” in the title of the stamp sheet.
