Frank Topping, An Impossible God
A God who came near and died for love is a God in solidarity with all those who suffer and are oppressed. This is a God who is incarnate in our hands and hearts. The birth of Jesus is a reminder that God is present in our fragility and solidarity and love. We must carry this candle through the dark.
a flag 4 trans folks who are also Christian :]
thinking about that one post about america that’s like “I love you jazz and national parks and baseball and 50s diners” and feeling the same way about (the good part of) the culture of being christian. i love you gregorian chant and vivaldi’s gloria and handel’s messiah and unclouded day and didn’t my lord deliver daniel and the oh hellos’ dear wormwood and praise to the lord the almighty and jesus loves me. i love you ancient ethiopian churches dug into the earth and st basil’s in red square and la sagrada familia and washington national cathedral and little wooden frame churches in hidden corners of every country and two or three gathered where no one can build a building. i love you the concept of the imago dei and the ending of roman exposure of infants and the abolition of the british slave trade and the battle hymn of the republic (“as he died to make men holy let us die to make men free”!) and the calling of men to love and sacrifice for women rather than rule them and caring for those everyone else left behind even if it means inconvenience or personal cost. i love you stained glass windows and elaborate wall mosaics and icons and the gospels as painted by rembrandt and the pictures in children’s bibles. i love you gerard manley hopkins and john donne and (sometimes) john milton and george herbert and ts eliot and mary oliver. i love you lucy pevensie and frodo baggins and meg murray and the narrative of the universe in which what is weak has been chosen to shame what is strong. i love you self-sacrifice in roman coliseums and at the stake and in nazi-occupied europe and every day in small acts of love for fellow human beings and small denials of hatred and self-centeredness and cruelty. i love you, concept that ultimate beauty and truth and justice and goodness and love are the center and the end of the entire universe.
bible says after we're resurrected not a single hair on our heads will be lost. rip to women who spent a fortune on laser hair removal. god does not care and hairy mother mary will be gluing that shit back on w tender loving care one by one
jesus/judas isn't even the best jesus yaoi. the betrayal kiss is a powerful symbol for sure and judas killing himself after jesus' crucifixion is of course hugely significant (see: jesus christ superstar). but in biblical canon there is literally a disciple described as jesus' most beloved. his favourite disciple. his philtatos, for the song of achilles girlies. he was the last disciple to die, he leans his head on jesus' shoulder at the last supper (and some scholars believe he was the only one jesus told of the nature of judas' betrayal). and lest we forget peter, who also betrayed/rejected jesus after swearing his eternal love for him, threatened to kill and die for him, was all like "i'll follow you anywhere" and "i'll be with you forever". straight up tried to walk on water for jesus. He was crazy. it was yaoi central in there
Every time I have ever found God it has been from a group of outsiders.
Every picture of God that has ever looks like him has been made by people who never saw a Jesus that looked like themselves
I have never felt more at home than when listening to a gay person talk about God. I have never understood someone better than the lesbian Catholics who love to veil, or the transgender episcoples who see their transition as an opportunity to share in God's creation, or anyone who found God and then carved their own way to him.
When I sit in chapel, and the worship music feels like noise, I know there is a hymn being sung with a shaking voice that sounds just like Christ calling out for his father. When I see lessons written in script, I know there are sheets of construction paper printed in stock fonts on a family's kitchen table sent home from Sunday school teaching the same. When I get a hand out with Bible verses bought from Amazon, I know that someone has written the same verse in craft glue and collage and their blood.
I think God is present the most when the process of finding him is distinctly human; because I think he knows us, and makes the way he finds us human.
