Searching In Databases Tips

Searching in databases tips

▪️Find the appropriate database

Databases examples 📚

• Web of Science: a database indexing articles on the arts, humanities and social sciences

• Scopus: a database listing journal articles in social, health and physical sciences

• PubMed: a database listing publications in life sciences

• JSTOR: a database of books, primary sources and journal articles on a range of subjects

▪️ Choose your search terms carefully

Think carefully about the terms that you type into the search box. Avoid too many search terms, too few search terms, inappropriate search terms, incorrect spelling or not including spelling variations 🤯

▪️ What are you searching?

You may have to use fewer or less specific terms in databases that only search an abstract, brief description or summary of the references 📑

▪️Combine search terms (AND, OR, NOT)

Connectors (sometimes called Boolean operators) are used to combine search terms. There are three connectors: AND, OR, NOT.

▫️AND placed between words means both words must appear in each reference. This will narrow your search

▫️OR placed between words means that either, or all, word/s may appear in each reference. This will broaden your search

▫️ NOT place between words means that the second word must not appear in any reference

▪️Word variations

Truncate words to retrieve all the alternative terms. It is a good way to save time or ensure you have included all the possible variations 🗄

▪️ Limit or refine your results

Look for the different limit options in the database when you are getting too many results (published in certain years or published in a particular journal) 📅

▪️ Snowballing to locate similar references

Check the list of references or bibliography in any relevant references you have already located. This may point you to other useful references. Some databases support cited-reference searching. This is a technique that allows you to start with one important reference and then find later references that cite it

Accurate Depiction Of Me Consuming Media That Will Later Fuel My Intrusive Thoughts

i try to be as kind as possible as often as i can, but i’m so worried that deep down i must be ‘faking’ it.

like, am i really just an awful person who’s putting up a façade? and if i am, why? for what? love? safety? survival? my ego? am i just tricking people into thinking i’m a good person? i don’t know which parts of me are real and which ones aren’t and it terrifies me!

There's a few things you can do

1. Put it under a beanie or hoodie cover, jut out only some of the hair

2. Cut it yourself if you can, and you know it's safe to

3. Look at inspiration of men with ponytails and man buns to shift your dysphoria into euphoria, try men long hair hairstyles on youtube

hello!!! as a trans male i want some advice—

about a year ago my mom let me cut my hair to whatever length i wanted because i let her get me therapy or soemtjing and j got it to an awesome pixie cut!! but it’s grown out to my shoulders now and its givin me some major dysphoria and i’m too scared to convince my parents to get it cut again. and no, i haven’t come out to them. i’ve been giving them hints, though.

anyways, basically want i wanted to ask is should i cut it myself? or should i just like— suck it up??? putting it in ponytails doesn’t help with the dysphoria

The irk of quirk

Yes, people with OCD are often preoccupied with fear, order and the pursuit of perfection. But please understand that the above is just the tip of the ice burg. Ocd can also look like intense shame, self-loathing and the worst of the worst…guilt. OCD forges a deep and habitual mistrust of one’s true intentions and causes to feelings of unworthiness. I have felt unworthy of my friends, family, self compassion and in the darkest times, of life. So if somebody tells you they have Ocd please don’t assume what that means based on stereotypes. OCD is not a quirk; it is a serious and debilitating illness.

I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but intrusive thoughts are basically your brain’s (sometimes very upsetting) way of saying “If there were two guys on the moon and one of them killed the other with a rock would that be fucked up or what?”

I’ve personally found that adding the “would that be fucked or what?” part in myself really helps put the more disturbing thoughts we sometimes get into perspective. Helps me say “yeah thar sure would be fucked up” and move on with my day.

It’s not a secret desire, it’s not something that only occurs to you because you’re a bad person. It’s just your brain deciding to process the fact that it knows an uncomfortable thing exists in the world by feeding it to you in an absurd “what if” with you as the main character.
