To my understanding that's from hunting dog talk. A tracking dog catches a scent and starts sniffing for the direction the game animal went, so if you haven't got a scent of what the thing is, that's a way of saying you wouldn't even know where to start looking.

Because if he doesn‘t, that means he‘s lost as well.

I really want to write a cross over fanfic, where Mulder and Scully have a massive xfile on the Winchester brothers and finally have a run in with them on a case.

And especially want it to take place with Bobby still alive and working it with them, and just having Scully staring at him like ".... You look familiar".
