When I was 10 years old, I shipped Lightning and Sally before I even knew what shipping meant. Now I am 16 and I still ship them with no shame.

This is Jackie Tournesol, the final girl I made art for. She’s a punk rocker girl who’s face claim is based on G Hannelius. Jackie’s creator based their character’s clothing style on Joan Jett and Nina Hagen from the 70s. The girl can be cold with a bit of a temper, but underneath she cares about her friends and family. The hair was difficult to figure out in looking stylistically like a 70s cartoon and is kind of a mix of both hair styles their creator mentioned. ❤️ I think Cars 2 was real start of the 2010s Disney Twist Villain craze…

Previous Twist Villains existed before the 2010s, but I think the reason why it became more frustrating for Pixar and Disney movies in that time was because of one person: John Lasseter. Lasseter had been executive producer on all the Pixar and Disney films with the twist villain: Cars 2, Wreck It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Moana, Coco, and Incredibles 2.

While Lasseter was the executive producer on previous Disney and Pixar films with a twist villain (Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc. Incredibles, Meet the Robinsons, and Toy Story 3) he also had a lot more oversight as well. He wasn’t the most powerful man in animation at the time.

I think Lasseter really liked the twist villain and production-timeline wise, he probably suggested twist villains while making Cars 2.

With that being said… I think Miles Axlerod is the smartest in the sense that he never brags about his crimes to his victims. He only reveals himself as the villain when there’s a bomb inches from him and seconds away from blowing him up. Axlerod was smart enough to be cautious, not going to his meetings in-person, using a disguise voice and I think changed his color(?)…

As for the amount of money he probably spent setting up the World Grand Prix as a sham… Well if the 2020s have taught us anything is that being a billionaire doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a genius.

I’m not saying Miles Axlerod my favorite, but I kind like him in the historical sense of animation production and writing, what he’s meant to represent in the movie itself, and for shallow reason of silly/scary fanfics about him. Like in the same way people use Prince Hans (no super powers or soft/sad boy-ism, but manipulation, charm, wealth, and privilege).

💚 I liked crashing into Mia and Tia on the Cars video game because it kind of gave me a glimpse of their personalities. Surprisingly they are different. Mia is more aggressive with her yelling and whining and has more lines than Tia (in the video game). Mia also has a slightly deeper voice than Tia. Tia is more likely to compliment herself (self confidence queen) and whine.

I don’t get why people assume they’re teenagers. Not only is that gross for Lightning… but Mater too since they’re in his tall tales as girls to impress.

Sarge is the underrated hero. Despite calling Fillmore a tree hugger, he clearly distrusts Axlerod’s history of being an oil tycoon enough to switch Allinol with Fillmore’s fuel at the last minute. He may call not trust Fillmore’s organic fuel, but he cares about McQueen’s safety than his bias. There’s also this line Mater said in Cars 3 that while Luigi and Guido were Lightning, they put Sarge and Fillmore in charge of the tire shop. Fillmore gave all the tires away and Sarge was hunting them back down because… you don’t just do that with someone else’s merchandise.

But at the same time, casually brings a cannon to a party when Fillmore asked:

Home Alone

Soundtrack goes hard, the wacky hijinks even harder. 

Loses points because the bandits had a prime opportunity to seize and redistribute some of the wealth from this ritzy Chicago neighborhood and instead they focus their energy on trying to kill an 8-year-old who outsmarts them at every turn.

Elf

A family favorite in our house. Touches on the overworking and mistreatment of employees through Greenway Press – Walter forced to choose between being with his family on Christmas Eve or losing his job, it’s implied Deb has a pet grooming business on the side to makes ends meet despite being a receptionist at a NY publishing company, etc.

Honestly most of the points come from Jonie’s underrated yet highly relatable storyline. She works in retail, exhausted and cynical towards the high-paced Christmas season which gives her little to no relief or reward, since she’s surviving on ramen noodles and using the employee showers because her water was cut off. Not expanded on enough to be considered a true Marxist piece but the effort is appreciated.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Although the meme is correct in that Rudolph’s red nose becomes desirable only once it proves to be useful, it does get points for exposing the harmful nature of forced conformity and those alienated by these capitalist ideals – Rudolph, Hermie, the island of misfit toys – are given a place to belong despite the perceived “flaws” that before made them undesirable.

Also the elves definitely have a free dental-plan now thanks to Hermie and are hopefully on their way to unionizing. Fucking superb you funky little misfit.

Klaus (2019)

Turns a member of the bourgeoisie into a man I’d trust to carry my mail. Respect for postal workers this movie contains was ahead of its time.

 No direct takedown of the establishment but a heartwarming message – “A true selfless act always sparks another” bITCH I may be crying – that emphasizes the importance of giving to others even when there is no selfish motivation to do so, which is inherently anti-capitalist.

Scott Calvin starts as a toy executive who takes part in the commercialization of Christmas. He was probably a business major so automatically loses points.

The Santa dynasty itself seems to operate under the cutthroat rules of the business world where you must overthrow (or in this case, throw him off the roof) the former CEO in order to seize power. 

Elves have not unionized or seized the means of production by the end.

A Christmas Carol 

THE ORIGINAL. Charles Dickens was not even in the neighborhood of fucking around with this one. CREATED the anti-capitalist Christmas genre!!

Rich man treats his employees like shit and gets terrorized by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. Force him to redistribute his wealth by dragging him through a montage of his most epic fails – oh, hey, remember when your fiancé left you? – and make him listen as all his employees and relatives complain about his stingy ass. 

They end this slideshow by throwing this dude into his own grave. DIRECT ACTION. 

Like damn, the ghosts really said, “If you hoard your resources and ignore those in need when you could directly improve/save lives with no cost to yourself, you will die ALONE and you WILL pay for your crimes in hell.” Literally watching this movie is a catharsis for anyone who is or has been poor and working class. 

I’m including all versions of this movie but a special shout out to the Muppet version because it fucks the hardest.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Listen I’m not even in realms of joking with this one. This movie is THE anti-capitalist film of the holiday season. 

WhoVille commercializing Christmas and a fixation on consumer culture to the point where anything and anyONE who cannot be commodified – aka the GRINCH – is alienated? The Whos rediscovering that people should be cherished over material items once it all is stolen and they must confront how empty the holiday has become??

Cindy Lou becoming disillusioned in Christmas – at an age that coincides when many children (those who celebrate Christmas at least) lost belief in Santa and had to wrestle with what the holiday means with the magic gone and they’re more aware of the rampant consumerism that taints the season?? Her resolve to find a meaning that goes beyond material consumption because if a holiday founded on goodwill doesn’t extend that goodwill to everyone, even those society deems undesirable, then what’s the point???

The Grinch despising Christmas because he is unable to participate and isolated from the Whos and also the better qualities within himself? His alienation serving to demonize him further as it allows the public to narrow his valid criticisms of the holiday down to him being different and thus inherently predisposed to evil?? And hmm isn’t it interesting that a LOT of this demonization comes via Mayor Augustus “generously paid for by the tax-payers of Whoville” Maywho, Mr. 1% himself.

The upper vs working class divide evident in the light show competition between Martha May and Betty Lou Who?? The opening scene of the shopping frenzy that mirrors our own consumerist culture and overworking of retail/poster workers??? This entire monologue:

“That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? That’s what it’s always been about. Gifts, gifts… gifts, gifts, gifts, gifts, gifts! You wanna know what happens to your gifts? They all come to me. In your garbage. You see what I’m saying? In your garbage. I could hang myself with all the bad Christmas neckties I found at the dump. And the avarice… the avarice never ends! ‘I want golf clubs. I want diamonds. I want a pony so I can ride it twice, get bored and sell it to make glue.’"

Cars Origins: Struck by Lightning

I’m not crying... I just got something in my.... Oh man this freaking sad and beautiful and sad and heartbreaking and sad.

I’ll write a fic of this someday... but first.

*Starts to cry*

Well I hope you feel better soon, anon. I don’t know if this will help or make it worse, but I hope somehow it helps you out.

Everyone thought he took Doc’s death hard. That was nothing compared to this. When they heard the news, he started screaming and swearing, completely turning into someone else the townsfolk had never seen.

He just leaves town without saying a word. He can’t take seeing it without her. She was the one who really made him appreciate it to begin with.

No one sees him for three or four days, no one knows where he went. Turns out, he drove up into the mountains and just sat in isolation while he mourned her. He couldn’t bear being around anyone.

He makes it back for the funeral, but doesn’t speak. Everyone is trying to provide what comfort they can, but it’s like talking to a brick wall. She was his life. Nothing, not even his racing career, was as significant as her.

Afterwards, he spends a lot of time at her grave. They buried her near Doc. He tries to talk to her to ease his conscience, but he can’t say anything without breaking back into into sobs.

He tries to find someone to blame for his pain, but can’t. He can’t control his thoughts and goes back and forth between being vehemently angry and unbearably anguished.

He’s torn between leaving Radiator Springs for good and staying. It all reminds him of her, and it’s painful. But at the same time he knows she’d want him to take care of it now that both she and Doc were gone.

He never goes to visit Wheel Well again. He can’t even look at it. He still supports and manages the operation, but he’ll never go back. He makes a point not to look at it if he has to drive by it. That was sacred ground for them as a couple. It’ll never be the same.

He treats the Cozy Cone motel similarly, although he still stays there. He hires on an old friend to keep it running so he doesn’t have to do it himself. Going into the office was hard to take. All the decor was still as she’d left it.

A couple weeks later, Mater finally gets him to talk. He doesn’t respond much, but it’s an improvement. Mater doesn’t push him, but he does say something that strikes a chord with Lightning. “Forgetting her won’t make it [the pain] go away.”

Lightning was given similar advice when Doc died, and he knew that he needed to honor her in a similar manner. He decided that he wasn’t going to leave town. That town was her everything, and if that’s all he had left of her besides memories, he was going to do whatever he could to support it.

Later on, he tries to focus more on racing, but it’s not quite the same. He still does well, but he finds himself pushing himself to the limits a lot more and thinking a lot less. It’s not a good strategy, and his eager spirit is just gone. He misses seeing her there in the pits waiting for him.

It takes several months for things to return to any degree of normality. The town is still much quieter, as Sally’s bubbly, optimistic personality isn’t there to supplement it anymore, but everyone at least functions again. 

Lightning eventually remembers how to enjoy himself and have fun again. He spends more time with the other members of the town and even with his racing buddies. He’s gotten to a point where he can think about her and not feel overwhelmed by her absence. There’s still a void in his soul, but it’s one he intends to keep, in memory of her.

Agreed. Completely. Though some of the images of Cruz and Lightning seem very... ship.

Lightning and Sally are still my Cars OTP!

Plus I don’t see Sally as the jealous type. Lightning has shown to be the jealous type with the whole getting pissy and annoyed when Sally only said Francesco looks good. Sally on her end has absolute trust in Lightning with letting him go to the World Grand Prix without any worry of him being far away and thus doing anything selfish.

Cruz I can see as having a crush on Lightning, especially since her character description says “coming to Lightning’s aid with stars in her eyes when he shows up at the Rust-eze Racing Center.”

Stars in one’s eyes is an idiom meaning “Be dazzled or enraptured, especially with romance; also, be naively idealistic or optimistic.” 

Cruz is a lifelong fan so she’ll be excited and happy to work for him but not flirt with or openly say she has a crush on him. Maybe blush when Lightning compliments her or even get a bit giggly but just that. Besides, I can mostly see Lightning seeing her as daughter figure or even a little sister figure, but either way, just a friend.

I sincerely hope with all of my being that Pixar doesn’t do that thing where Lightning spends all of his time with Cruz because she’s training him and it makes Sally feel insecure because she’s more in his league than she is - or some other excuse - and they imply that something could happen between Lightning and Cruz.

Don’t do that. Do not do that. Don’t even hint at it, get that away from me and chuck it to the bottom of the ocean. Sally is a vibrant and confident lady who trusts her bf, Lightning is not a weasel and loves Sally with all of his heart, and Cruz is a decent and respectable young lady who wouldn’t even think of doing something like that. I’m watching you, Pixar.

As described by his creator “he’s laid back, open minded and a helpful individual, but sometimes he just wants to be alone for various reasons.” His mother is dating a sleezeball boyfriend. He and his best friend AJ Maye are the first to find Sev. The face claim for this character is based on #tannerbuchanan while the character’s body type is based on the Archie cartoon of the 70s. Hey. This is my first time posting anything onto Instagram. This past Spring semester I made character designs for this Stranger Things fanfic called Stranger Things: The Seven Chronicles. Technically it was for school, but I was having a sort of artist block when trying to think of something to work on for my class. I also wanted to make artwork for this fanfic because… well I created to characters personally for it. The fanfic is an SYOC fanfic (Submit/Select Your Own Character). The story takes place in 1976 in Rockford, Illinois where a group of teens find a strange boy who happens have waterbending powers. This character here is one I made for the fanfic. Her name is Natroya “Naty” Rhodes. She’s a black cheerleader who strives for perfection in her athletic ability and wants to maintain her position as a popular. Naty can come across as the mean girl, but mainly to those that are in the high school popularity hierarchy. She’s friends with classmates that are on the lower end of the popularity chain because they’re less of a threat to her. When talking to the author they sometimes say that Naty is like the Lucas of the teens. Granted the major difference between Naty and Lucas in my eyes is that Lucas’ hostility towards the new member of the group comes from the stress of one his best friends being missing. Naty’s hostility comes from not knowing who this teenage is and thus can’t recognize what he’s all about. She can figure out her classmates and whether they’re a threat to her on the high school social hierarchy, but not this teen in a hospital gown.
